SUMMARY:Slaid Cleaves
DESCRIPTION:“A master storyteller\, one influenced not by the shine of pop-culture but by the dirt of real life.” – Joseph Hudak\n— Rolling Stone Country \n3/3/23 Slaid Cleaves releases his latest album\, TOGETHER THROUGH THE DARK. \nTwelve new songs amid the 100\,000 that get uploaded to Spotify every day (according to hypebot.com). Will any of them rise above the din enough to be heard? So far\, a few of them have been hanging out with the likes of young Americana superstars Charlie Crocket and Margo Price on the Americana Music Association album and singles charts\, as well as the popular Spotify playlist\, The Pulse of Americana. \nIt’s Cleaves’ second release on Candy House Media\, which consists of himself and his wife and manager\, Karen Cleaves\, with hired gun Angela Backstrom promoting to Americana radio. It’s one of the rare self-releases on the charts\, and the early success of the first few singles is a testament to the consistent quality of Cleaves’ output over the past 25 years\, and to the bond he’s built and maintained with the dedicated music lovers at Americana radio since its inception in the mid 1990s. \nSlaid teamed up with producer Scrappy Jud Newcomb for the third time in early 2022 to record a new batch of songs\, Slaid’s first in five years. Familiar themes of struggle and resilience will be a surprise to no one. TOGETHER THROUGH THE DARK digs into the crucial moments and experiences that shape our journeys. A kind word when it’s needed most\, the effort to act honorably in dark and violent times\, the wisdom of a barfly\, the majesty of rock and roll\, the dignity of work and the enduring grace provided by true love. \nAs Scrappy puts it\, “This album speaks to the hopeful\, the hard working\, the battered\, confused\, and the sad. But above all to the believers in the city of freedom that we heard in the stories of our youth and all those FM radio hits.” \nTOGETHER THROUGH THE DARK \nmore info: slaidcleavesbooking@gmail.com\nMore bio at slaid.com/bio \nOriginally hailing from Maine\, this now Austin songwriter might as well have been born in the lone state. Slaid Cleaves has the Austin style songwriting reminiscent of Joe Ely or Townes Van Zandt\, but a style and sound all his own. He sits permanently and high on the top of our favorite songwriters list. \nAmericana/folk stalwart Slaid Cleaves has been putting out highly acclaimed records for 25 years now\, consistently delivering songs that strike people’s hearts and become part of their lives. Together Through the Dark is no different. Producer Scrappy Jud Newcomb and Cleaves teamed up for the third time in early 2022 between Covid surges to record a new batch of songs\, Slaid’s first in five years. Familiar themes of struggle and resilience will be a surprise to no one. As Scrappy puts it\, “This album speaks to the hopeful\, the hard working\, the battered\, confused\, and the sad. But above all to the believers in the city of freedom that we heard in the stories of our youth and all those FM radio hits.” Watch for single releases to radio and streaming services in early 2023 in anticipation of a March 3rd worldwide album release.

SUMMARY:Pierre Bensusan
DESCRIPTION:Back in 1974\, Pierre Bensusan (www.pierrebensusan.com) was cutting his teeth as a performer on the folk scene in Paris and other cities in France when one of his idols\, banjo great Bill Keith\, offered him his first official paying gig ever touring Western Europe with his bluegrass band. The French-Algerian upstart\, humbly launching a four decade career was hired to play mandolin. But when Keith heard his groundbreaking approach to the acoustic guitar\, he decided to allow Bensusan a few key spotlights on that instrument. \nDecades later\, when Bensusan was looking for potential finishing touches for “Encore”\, his ambitious and expansive retrospective collection celebrating 40 years as a globetrotting live performer\, he discovered a reel to reel tape with a Swiss National Radio recording of a concert in Lausanne from that tour. While the tireless troubadour’s original plan for the 3-CD set was to include tracks recorded between 1998 and 2013 in France\, Canada\, Ireland\, Austria and especially the U.S. (where he regularly records)\, Bensusan decided to round out the 35-track set by starting “Disc 2” with a set of five titles from this show\, including two bluegrass songs. \nIn all\, Encore features 11 tracks never previously released commercially in any form. \nEngineered in Los Angeles by Grammy winner Rich Breen\, Encore also includes a handful of songs featuring Bensusan’s beautiful French language vocals (“Cordilliere” and “Pas Sage\,” among others) and wordless vocalese (“Bamboul’hiver”); two cuts with future Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess from a commissioned 1998 concert in Northern France that included a 200-piece children’s choir (including the previously unreleased “Anthem For The Ocean”); and the 18-minute setpiece “Celtic Medley.” In all\, Encore features 11 tracks never previously released commercially in any form. \nhttp://www.pierrebensusan.com  \nhttp://www.facebook.com/pierrebensusan \nhttps://twitter.com/pbensusan \nhttp://www.youtube.com/user/bensusanhq

SUMMARY:The Steel Wheels
DESCRIPTION:It takes time\nFor the seasons to change\nIt takes time\, sometimes so much time\nTo welcome a reason not to stay the same \n-“Time Is All I Need\,” from Everyone a Song Vol. 2 \n  \nThe Steel Wheels have long been at home in the creative space between tradition and innovation\, informed by the familiar sounds of the Virginia mountains where the band was formed\, but always moving forward with insightful lyrics and an evolving sound. In 2005\, Jay Lapp (vocals\, guitars\, mandolin) and Eric Brubaker (vocals\, fiddle) joined lead singer Trent Wagler (guitar\, banjo) in forming the band as a vehicle for Wagler’s songwriting. They released several albums under Wagler’s moniker\, before officially adopting the The Steel Wheels name with the 2010 release of Red Wing. Quickly staking their claim as independent upstarts in the burgeoning Americana scene\, The Steel Wheels followed up this release with three more self-produced albums in the next five years\, before joining forces with producer Sam Kassirer for Wild As We Came Here (2017) and Over The Trees (2019). Kevin Garcia (drums\, percussion\, keys) joined in 2017\, bringing a new level of sonic depth and polish to the outfit. Having gained the experience of thousands of shows\, festivals and many miles on the road\, the stubbornly independent band has formed deep bonds with each other and the audience that sustains them. \nThe Steel Wheels have responded to this time of isolation and loss by seeking to connect with their audience in new ways. In 2020\, unable to perform their rootsy brand of Americana for crowds in live settings\, the musicians turned their creative powers to crafting songs for individuals. Produced in isolation in the band’s home studios\, the Everyone a Song albums are part of an ongoing project to collect the personal experiences of fans and forge them into that most enduring\, yet ephemeral\, format we call “song.” An accompanying podcast\, We Made You a Song\, explores the stories behind these songs\, and the songwriting process itself. While each song was commissioned to honor a specific relationship or event—a birth\, a wedding\, a memory of home—the emotions evoked are universal. \nNowhere is this shared humanity more evident than at the band’s own Red Wing Roots Music Festival\, a weekend-long celebration of music\, community\, and the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Hosted by The Steel Wheels every summer\, the festival provides a space for the band to shine\, from their high energy Saturday night main stage set to their afternoon showcase with young Red Wing Academy students. At Sunday’s gospel hour you are as likely to hear Steel Wheels originals or Warren Zevon covers as you are traditional gospel fare. The weekend is rounded out by the beloved tribute set in which the band collaborates with a cadre of fellow artists to honor an influential figure in American music\, with past tributes ranging from Dolly Parton to John Prine. \nThe year 2021 closed a chapter for The Steel Wheels\, as founding member and bass player Brian Dickel moved on from touring in order to take over for Jeff Huss as co-owner of Huss and Dalton Guitars. The band is joined by bassist Derek Kratzer\, a longtime friend and musical collaborator\, to continue the mission set out over a decade ago; shaking up traditions to see what sticks\, telling stories\, and joining communities through song. \nmuch more\nhttps://www.thesteelwheels.com \n
