SUMMARY:Friday Folk Coffeehouse Presents Crowes Pasture on 3/20!
DESCRIPTION:First Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its 7th concert of the 2025-2026 season featuring the Crowes Pasture at First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, March 20\, 2026 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $15 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm.  In case of inclement weather\, this concert might be canceled the day before the performance. For information about a potential cancellation\, please check Live Music | dedhamuu . \nWe love the origin story of Crowes Pasture\, which is Andy Rogovin and Monique Byrne. The couple was putting one of their children to bed. They sang a song and broke into quiet harmony to fill out the lullaby. As they carefully closed the door on the sleeping child\, they looked at each other and said\, “That was fun.” \nThey have been serious about that fun ever since. Lots of original music\, three albums and two EPs later\, they have won an international acoustic music award\, received numerous folk music award nominations and can be found touring on both coasts\, Canada and in the UK. One of the things we love about this duo is the way they take a look at what’s happening around them\, and to them\, when they write songs. But they love a good cover\, too: Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen\, Woody Guthrie. You’ll find their music rooted in the folk tradition that speaks to hearts that are joyful\, broken\, and longing for peace and justice. They know there’s poetry in whatever is right here\, right now. And the harmonies just keep coming. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, and the Parish Players theater troupe\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events.

There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $15 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe Cooke Family Singers is comprised of family members Frances\, Ruth\, and George\, plus an ever-changing and unpredictable set of special guests that can range from their 8-year-old niece to lifelong musician friends.  Their sets are constructed and tailored to each performance venue\, so they can range from an intimate trio with acoustic guitar to a full band.  Vocal duties rotate throughout the performance as our goal is a variety of styles and textures.  Cooke Family Singers sets will feature George’s original songs\, which tend to be humorous and slightly cynical takes on the foibles of our everyday lives. Some examples are the song “I Didn’t Know that You Owned This Road” about driving in Boston or “I’m Going to be a Park Ranger”\, which is a wistful fantasy about a job change. Cooke Family Singers’ other songs are curated covers that feature Ruth and Frances’ tight harmonies and can range from Lake St. Dive to Johnny Cash to songs from the musical “Hamilton”. They perform at porch fests and other musical events in the Northeast.  During the pandemic\, the Singers did a biweekly series of online “hootenanny’s” that were broadcast on Facebook.  The Cooke Family Singers felt it was a small way to try to build some sense of community during a very difficult time.  They are looking forward to participating in the Friday Folk Coffeehouse Series on Fri\, April 18\, 2024. Their music can be found on George’s Bandcamp site: https://georgecooke.bandcamp.com/. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. SUMMARY:First Church and Dedham School of Music Present the Smack Dabs Swing Band on Friday\, March 7th!
DESCRIPTION:First Friday Jazz/Classical Concerts Sponsored by the Dedham School of Music and First Church\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell \nFirst Friday Jazz/Classical Concerts Sponsored by Dedham School of Music and First Church presents its sixth concert of the 2024-2025 season featuring the Smack Dabs at First Church and Parish in Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, March 7\, 2025 at 7:30 pm in the Meetinghouse. (The Smack Dabs concert is partially funded by grants from both the Massachusetts and Dedham Cultural Councils.) The list of artists who led small combos include Tiny Grimes\, Slim Galliard\, Billie Holiday\, and Fats Waller. In addition to these groups\, several important vocal harmony groups were also active on the scene\, including the Cats and the Fiddle\, the Mills Brothers\, the Ink Spots\, and the Spirits of Rhythm. This delightful and timeless genre features a rich variety of musical styles\, ranging from mournful blues to joyful celebrations\, setting the stage for incredible solo and group improvisations and delighting listening audiences and dancers alike. \nThe Smack Dabs repertoire embodies a melange of these Swing styles. For example\, the Smack Dabs Band gets its instrumental configuration from Tampa Red and his Chicago Five\, its improvisational vitality from the small Black Swing combo\, and its swagger from risqué Blues. The Smack Dabs are proud to showcase some of Boston’s most compelling improvising musicians in their lineup\, bringing a fresh and unique sound to each performance. The Band includes Mark Earley on guitar\, vocals and kazoo\, David Sparr on piano\, Jim Gray on upright bass\, Mark Berney on cornet\, Kit Buckley on saxophone and clarinet\, and Jon Kraus on washboard. The Smack Dabs celebrate the bawdy\, joyous\, inclusive character of 1930’s Swing Blues music and is dedicated to honoring those who made it great. Meet The Smack Dabs! \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, Friday Folk Coffeehouse\, as well as our First Friday Jazz & Classical Concerts in conjunction with Dedham School of Music founded in 2008 providing an environment for people of all ages\, abilities\, and means to learn\, play\, and enjoy music.

SUMMARY:First Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse Presents the Doppelgängers and Friends on 4/19!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell \n  \nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its seventh concert of the 2023-2024 season featuring the Doppelgängers and Friends at First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, April 19\, 2024 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $15 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \n  \nThe Doppelgängers \, Kenny Raskin and RF Berks\, make their 3rd triumphant return to the Church\, having played the Friday Folk Coffeehouse concerts in 2022 and 2023. This time they are bringing a few other players along. Both RF and Kenny have had their own musical careers as singer/songwriters\, but revel in the camaraderie of playing together. Their style is Americana\, with a touch of swing as well. While their careers have been different\, their love of acoustic music and singing harmony has brought them together and found them playing everywhere from living rooms to music festivals. \nThe two men met in 2015 at the Maine Fiddle Camp\, where they soon found out that many people at the camp thought they were brothers. The deal was sealed when RF’s daughter mistook Kenny for her father. Thus\, the Doppelgängers were born. \nKenny was 8 years old when his father’s friend Harry gave him a ukulele. He played that ukulele until he was 11 years old. Then he discovered girls\, and promptly bought a guitar. That ukulele\, however\, was the gateway into a fifty-year plus love affair with playing music on multiple instruments\, including banjo\, mandolin and bass.  In 2018\, Kenny released his debut CD\, MY GREATEST HITS!\, and in 2022 followed it with his second CD\, Peace of Mind. He is also known internationally as an accomplished actor and theatre clown\, having appeared on Broadway and with Cirque du Soleil\, as well as on television and variety stages in the US\, France\, England\, Chile\, Germany and China. \nRF Berks found a Sears guitar in the attic when he was 15 and began carrying it everywhere he went. Whenever he met a kid that could play a song or guitar lick he would make them show him how it worked until eventually he learned enough to form a band. He learned most of what he knows about music long before he studied and obtained a degree in the subject. He has been writing songs – over one hundred – for twenty plus years\, and in 2019 he released an album entitled TREAT ME WELL\, which can be found on the usual streaming platforms. It was an eclectic mix of musical styles with contributing musicians from around the world. Francis is also an accomplished poet. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. SUMMARY:Dedham First Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse Presents the Cooke Family Singers on 2/16!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell \nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its fifth concert of the 2023-2024 season featuring the Cooke Family Singers at First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, February 16\, 2024 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. They are looking forward to participating in the Friday Folk Coffeehouse Series on Fri\, Feb 16\, 2024. Their music can be found on George’s Bandcamp site: https://georgecooke.bandcamp.com/. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. SUMMARY:Friday Folk Coffeehouse Presents the Doppelgangers at 7:30 PM on Friday\, April 21!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell\nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its seventh concert of the 2022-2023 season featuring the The Doppelgängers at First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, April 21\, 2023 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $10 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe Doppelgängers \, Kenny Raskin and RF Berks\, make their triumphant return to the Church\, having played the Folk Coffeehouse inaugural concert in 2022. They will have just returned from Colombia\, where they were invited to play at the Sonida Selva Music Festival in Minca and record a live album. The two men met in 2015 at the Maine Fiddle Camp\, where they soon found out that many people at the camp thought they were brothers. The deal was sealed when RF’s daughter mistook Kenny for her father. Thus\, the Doppelgängers were born. \nBoth RF and Kenny have had their own musical careers as singer/songwriters\, but revel in the camaraderie of playing together. Their style is Americana\, with a touch of swing as well. While their careers have been different\, their love of acoustic music and singing harmony has brought them together and found them playing everywhere from living rooms to music festivals. \nKenny was 8 years old when his father’s friend Harry gave him a ukulele. He played that ukulele until 11 years old. Then he discovered girls\, and promptly bought a guitar. That ukulele\, however\, was the gateway into a fifty-year plus love affair with playing music on multiple instruments\, including banjo\, mandolin and bass.  In 2018\, Kenny released his debut CD\, MY GREATEST HITS!\, and in 2022 released his second CD\, Peace of Mind. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and the Concerts at First Church Saturday classical concert series\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events. \n

Tickets are $10 available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe Gloucester Hornpipe and Clog Society has been delighting audiences in New England for over forty years with Celtic\, maritime\, French Canadian\, and original songs and tunes.  The band’s repertoire especially features American Colonial-era tunes\, sing-along sea chanteys\, and original songs of colorful people and places from New England’s rich history. From ragtime to oldtime\, the band’s rollicking\, friendly style is fun for all ages. Nancy Koch plays accordion and guitar. She also sings boldly of pirates and other seagoing rascals\, yet creates lovely vocal harmonies on gorgeous\, slow ballads. Ben Bruno is on fiddle and guitar. He picked up the fiddle and hung up his electric guitar after discovering a love for traditional fiddle music. He has an insatiable thirst for learning new tunes and styles.  Linda Abrams has been playing melodic claw hammer banjo for over 40 years. Despite growing up listening to Pete Seeger and Earl Scruggs\, she ventured into playing the music of Ireland\, France and Quebec. Band co-founder David “Doc” Rosen is master of the age-old delights of the bodhrán (an Irish drum)\, spoons and bones. He also plays an unusual instrument that never fails to intrigue: the pogocello. From the traditions of the Swedish “Devil’s fiddle\,” eastern European polka percussion sticks\, and 18th and 19th century shipboard Fufu bands\, the pogocello is a mix of rhythm instrument and pogo-stick. It is not to be missed!  You’ll be inspired to tap your toes and sing along! \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes church choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and the Concerts at First Church concert series\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouses.
