SUMMARY:Sloan Wainwright and Tret Fure at the Linden Tree Coffeehouse in Wakefield
DESCRIPTION:The Linden Tree Coffeehouse presents 38th season finale: \nAn Evening with Sloan Wainwright and Tret Fure \nLIVE IN PERSON!    Sat. May 6th at 7:30 pm \nThe Linden Tree Coffeehouse is presenting its final show of its  38th season  with a special event on Saturday\, May 6 at 7:30pm\, “An Evening with Sloan Wainwright and Tret Fure.” will be held at the Wakefield- UU Church\, 326 Main St. Wakefield.01880 \nLong time friends\,  singer-songwriters  Sloan Wainwright and Tret Fure will be bringing the joy of music and artistry on stage in an upbeat\, energetic and moving evening. For Tret\, this is an encore visit to our stage\, for Sloan\, it’s her first time to the Linden Tree and like her we are excited to have this opportunity. \nSloan Wainwright is a songwriter\, singer\, performer\, teacher\, mentor and collaborator. A unique hybrid of pop\, folk\, jazz and blues\, Wainwright’s music is unified by her melodious tone and rich\, powerful contralto. Over the course of a 30-year career in music\, she has played the great concert halls\, the most storied listening rooms and top music festivals while also teaching at the nation’s leading music retreats. She has inspired hundreds of students on their creative journeys and collaborated with dozens of musicians\, writers\, choreographers and performers. \nMost of all\, Wainwright is an artist. As a member of an acclaimed family of artists (brother Loudon Wainwright\, sister-in-law Kate McGarrigle\, nephew Rufus Wainwright and nieces Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche)\, Wainwright has charted an artistic path all her own\, one based in close observation\, joy\, and spiritual connection. \nIt is said that Sloan’s warm and welcoming contralto voice could “fell a redwood\,” Defying standard categorization\, with 10 original CDs under her belt\, Sloan has a command of a variety of American musical styles: pop\, folk\, jazz and blues. Her incredible gift is not only her unique songwriting ability but also her dramatically voiced rendition of original songs. She performs with power house guitarist Steve Murphy. They will be playing A beautiful new collection of never-released Sloan Wainwright songs connected by the spirit of collaboration:songs from the new CD Red Maple Tree. \nA prolific artist in the contemporary singer-songwriter arena\, Tret Fure has released 17 albums and CDs over the course of her 48 year career.  Her most recent recording is “Stone by Stone\, a collection of very personal and heartful songs. ”To engage with Tret Fure is to feel her warmth\, her humanity and her fierce determination. Tret invites you to be part of her family\, her stories are our stories at once current and timeless\, her lyrics are always well crafted and her music supports and enhances but never overpowers her message. Every album from Tret is a treat and “Stone by Stone” is no exception. Ron Cooke\, KTAL 101.5 FM – Las Cruces\, NM \n“Tret is an award winning singer-songwriter who draws you into her personal world without self-indulgence because her themes are universal and the songs\, well-written. Tret’s also a folk singer\, touching on important issues like gender identity\, and peace.  Her lyrics are lovely\, she can still do it with just a simple guitar and vocal. In one of her songs\, she sings\, “When you think you just can’t sing / You find a better song.” For this performance\, Tret will be bringing new songs from her soon to be released CD\, The Language of Love” \nFure also markets of her own line of clothing named after her popular song “Tomboy girl”. In addition\, Tret teaches guitar and songwriting individually and in workshop settings. She paints pet portraits on commission and\, an accomplished cook\, Fure has also published a cookbook\, “Tret’s Kitchen”\, featuring her own recipes. Along with bridging the marketing\, production\, music and art worlds\, Tret served for 6 years as President of Local 1000\, The Traveling Musicians Association–a union geared toward helping traveling musicians find security and longevity. Tret is truly a Renaissance Woman! \nNote tickets for those attending are $25  or $20 for reserved seats\, cash or check at the door\,  Please reserve your seats by calling 781-246-2836. Wearing masks is optional.  Beverages and wrapped snacks  will be sold. \nThe Linden Tree Coffeehouse is located in the social hall of Wakefield’s Unitarian-Universalist Church at 326 Main St. Wakefield\, 01880.The Linden Tree Coffeehouse operates\, in part\, with thanks to partial support from Wakefield’s Art Council of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.  For more information: 781-246-2836\, www.LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org \n

SUMMARY:Andrew Duhon
DESCRIPTION:It was Leo Tolstoy who said “All great literature is one of two stories; a man goes on a journey or a stranger comes to town\,” and in the case of Andrew Duhon and his latest album Emerald Blue\, both instances are true. Duhon temporarily left New Orleans\, his longtime home and musical muse in 2019\, finding himself inspired by the landscape of the Pacific Northwest and notably\, its colors—a hue he describes as ‘emerald blue’ for which the album is named\, the same shade looking back at him in his partner’s eyes. Had he overlooked the specific shade of her eyes while living below sea level? Or did the change of location open his mind more acutely? The record does just that: examine the familiar in the context of the unfamiliar. Emerald Blue is a probing appreciation of the dailiness of life; a note-taking exercise in living. \nDuhon channeled his new perspective into an eleven song collection\, calling on friends and collaborators including Jano Rix on drums\, percussion\, and harmonies; Myles Weeks on upright and electric basses and harmonies; and Dan Walker on keys and accordion. Duhon returned South for the recording process\, finding comfort and creativity in Maurice\, Louisiana’s storied Dockside Studios with GRAMMY-award winning engineer and longtime collaborator of Andrew’s\, Trina Shoemaker\, to capture every inch of vibe and beauty and texture each song had to offer. \nEmerald Blue in the news: \n“Andrew Duhon looks for a better balance to life on new ‘Emerald Blue’” via Gambit Weekly \nDuhon muses on the kindness of strangers and fly fishing for Coastal Angler \n“Faintly reminiscent of early M Ward and artists like Beachwood Sparks\, Bonnie “Prince” Billy\, Sparklehorse or Damien Jurado\, ‘Emerald Blue’ sits happily at the crossroads of harmony-drenched pop\, rustic americana\, Appalachian folk and about a half-dozen other styles\, all meeting and mixing around the warmth of Duhon’s vocals; world-weary\, stretched and full of soul.” –Holler \nDuhon is “a teller of stories with an undeniable voice\, weighted and soulful.” –KPCW/NPR \nNo Depression calls the album “effortless\,” noting “Duhon reminds us that everything comes in its time: adventure\, loneliness\, tragedy and — yes\, even if it’s fleeting — contentment.” \nFans can watch the music video for “Emerald Blue” at this link\, check out previously-released singles “Everybody Colored Their Own Jesus” and “Castle On Irish Bayou.” Duhon’s tour picks back up tonight in Lafayette\, LA before continuing throughout the Southeast and then over to the Pacific Northwest in late summer. SUMMARY:First Church Dedham Friday Folk Coffeehouse Presents Andrew Innes and the Reluctant Ramblers on 5/19!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463\nContact: Geoff Tegnell\nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its eighth concert of the 2022-2023 season featuring Andrew Innes & The Reluctant Ramblers at First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, May 19\, 2023 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $10 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nAndrew Innes The Reluctant Ramblers make their first appearance at the Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham. The Ramblers draw their material primarily from Andrew’s original songs which are rooted in the slower\, dreamier side of indie-folk\, blues\, Americana and bluegrass.  Andrew Innes (Acoustic Guitar & Vocals) has been studying and performing music for almost 40 years. Andrew started at the age of 16 with harmonica and piano\, and then picked up saxophone in his senior year of high school. Over the years Andrew has fronted various jazz groups on alto and tenor saxophones; played washboard\, musical saw and harmonica with the wonderful NYC-based bluegrass/western swing band\, The Bootleg Remedy.  Andrew played saxophone and harmonica with indie-chamber pop supergroup Champale (featuring members of Clem Snide\, Luna & Nada Surf) and spent two years in the house band for the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus. He performed for many years with Uncle Jimmy’s Dirty Basement\, a provocatively unlikely collaboration between Henson-level puppeteers and an avant-garde rock band and added musical saw\, saxophones and accordion to the cinematic soundscapes of the instrumental band\, Anchor Tattoo. In recent years Andrew has shifted his primary focus to guitar\, dobro\, singing\, and songwriting and can be seen in the Boston area fronting the Reluctant Ramblers\, playing with the AKE Trio\, and accompanying singer-songwriter Carla Ryder. Check out www.weescotsman.com to sign up for Andrew’s email list and find out about upcoming shows. \nEric Smalley (Upright bass) and Kim Patch (Fiddle) play with many groups in the Boston area including The Rozzicats\, Louder Than Milk\, Creek River String Band & the Bookmatch Duo. Tim Obetz (Pedal Steel) has performed and recorded with many musicians and bands in the Boston-area including Buffalo Tom\, Will Dailey\, Terry Kitchen\, Buttercup\, and The Pineapple Ranch Hands. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and the Concerts at First Church Saturday classical concert series\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events.

For ticket reservations and more information\, visit pcawestford.org. \nHow exactly does one sum up the whimsical songwriter Deb Seymour? According to a fan\, “Joni Mitchell meets Lucille Ball.” Deb Seymour writes songs that tickle your funny bone and pull at your heart strings. SUMMARY:Vance Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:“If Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens had a love child\, with Rodney Dangerfield as the midwife\, the results might have been something close to the great Vance Gilbert.” As the above quote from Richmond magazine suggests\, Vance Gilbert defies stereotypes. It’s little wonder then that he also exceeds expectations. In this case\, those two qualities go hand in hand. “I’m black\, I sing\, I play an acoustic guitar\, and I don’t play the blues\,” Gilbert insists. That may be a broad statement\, but it rings with truth. \nWhat he does do is make memorable music\, as evidenced by the 13 albums he’s released so far\, as well as the mark he’s made on the folk and acoustic music scenes in general. Over the course of a prolific career that extends back to the early ’90s\, he’s recorded with his good friend Ellis Paul and shared stages worldwide with Aretha Franklin\, Shawn Colvin\, Arlo Guthrie\, the Milk Carton Kids\, George Carlin (150+ shows)\, Anita Baker\, the Subdudes\, Paul Reiser and any number of others. \nHe’s also made a prominent presence at some of the world’s most prestigious gatherings\, among them the Newport\, Winnipeg\, Rocky Mountain\, Calgary\, Ottawa\, and Falcon Ridge folk festivals\, the Kate Wolf Music Festival\, and Australia’s Woodford Folk Festival and Mullum Music Festival. “There was also that one nude festival in Maryland\,” Gilbert recalls. “I don’t recall the name of that one\, but I have to admit that the name wasn’t the first thing I would remember.” \nNaturally\, Gilbert can be forgiven for that minor oversight\, given the amount of praise he’s received from the pundits. His remarkable rapport with his audiences and his free spirited performances inspired one critic to hail him as “a folkie trapped in a vaudevillian body\,” with “a voice that could have been on the opera stage\, a wit that could have been on a comedy stage and a songwriting talent that’s thrust him on the folk stage for decades.” \nContinue reading at https://vancegilbert.com/bio/

Her hard living music has garnered her the nickname “Canada’s Queen of Americana.” And while her deep\, bluesy croon has drawn comparisons to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch\, it’s the poetry of her lyrics that really sets her apart. \nHanson is known for her high energy\, roots guitar driven live performances\, whether playing solo or with her band the Good Intentions. She has an uncanny way of connecting with her audience with an authenticity that is as entertaining as it is disarming.

SUMMARY:The Nields
DESCRIPTION:If there’s one constant here\, it’s The Nields sisters’ beautifully sweet vocal harmonies that sound eerily like the Roches singing Lush in a really big room. It’s infectious stuff.\n-Austin Chronicle \nWhat’s A Nields? The Nields story begins with the two sisters. Nerissa and Katryn a grew up singing folk songs in the kitchen and in the back seat of the family car. Katryna learned to sing melody with their father\, eventually making her an ideal front person for the band. Nerissa\, on the other hand\, tackled the harmonies; with that skill\, she provided a natural counterpoint to her sister’s vibrant lead. “I knew I wanted to be a singer and songwriter from the time I was 7\,” explains Nerissa. “I remember I wrote my first song that I was really proud of when I was 13\, and right away I had a harmony for it\, so I dragged Katryna out of her room and taught her the harmony. It was instinct — I knew that my sister should be there.” In the late ’80s\, Nerissa and Katryna met a graduate student named David Jones\, who had always longed for a career in music. Playing acoustic guitar through an electric pedal board\, he joined the sisters as they played open mics in the Washington\, DC area. Later\, he married Nerissa and took HER last name (“Just like the Ramones!\,” he said). The trio then moved to New England and released their first two recordings\, 66 Hoxsey St. (named after the house in Williamstown\, MA that Nerissa and David were living in when they started the band. \nBy the fall of ’94\, The Nields were a full-fledged five-piece acoustic rock explosion. The critical kudos were coming in\, with The Boston Globe commenting simply\, “The Nields are young. They are hip. They are hot. \nSo much more to their story at  https://nields.com/ \nXVII\, the Nields’ seventeenth album\, is both their most personal and their most community-minded. Well into their third decade as a musical partners and—judging by this sublime album––at the very top of their game\, the Nields turn to meditations on time\, and turning points\, their roots and community – both musical and personal – but they also express joy in the present\, faith in the future\, and a whole lot of hope and promise.

His dad used to chop wood with neighbor Garth Hudson of the Band and literally built the floor that Bob Dylan stood on at manager Albert Grossman’s Bearsville studios in Woodstock\, NY.  His mom heard Pete Seeger and Joan Baez play when they filmed a TV show in her uncles living room in Boston\, and dated one of the Chambers Brothers before she met his dad.  Weaned on a diet of Jackson Browne and Toots and the Maytals\, some of Forest’s earliest memories are of his dad playing “Poncho and Lefty” by Townes Van Zandt and his mom singing Elizabeth Cotton’s “Freight Train”. Forest wrote songs with Rory Block when he was six years old\, learned to juggle with WavyGravy when he was 9\, and studied drumming with the late African master percussionist Babatunde Olatunji as a teenager.  In college he played in a band with SNL star Maya Rudolph. They opened for No Doubt at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz before Forest left to study art in Spain. \nA pioneer of the DIY movement he recorded his first record in his bedroom in San Francisco with bassist Seth Ford Young (Tom Waits\, Edward Sharpe) and toured Europe for the first time\, including playing at the Rally on Dam Square in Amsterdam for the Tibetan Freedom Concert where he first met Ben Harper\, Alanis Morrisette and Thom Yorke. \nWith over 78 million plays on Pandora\, troubadour and award-winning songwriter\, Forest Sun\, enlivens audiences around the globe with his wealth of songs and stories\, all sung and told in a laid-back California style. Sun’s soulful music draws on a deep well of Americana and is compared to everyone from Jack Johnson and The Avett Brothers to Van Morrison and Bob Dylan.  He’s played festivals from California (Strawberry Music Festival\, American River Music Festival) to Europe (Belladrum in Scottland\, Fiesta City in Belgium)\,opened for such luminaries as Lyle Lovett\, Bonnie Rait\, Steve Earle\, Keb Mo\, and toured with folks like Brett Dennen\, Mason Jennings and the Beach Boys (Forest met famed Beach Boys producer Van Dyke Parks at a festival porch jam and later swapped songs on his piano at his house in LA). Musical collaborations on his records include members of Bob Dylans band\, members of Calexico/Iron and Wine\, Heather Massse(The Wailin’ Jennys\, Prairie Home Companion) Jolie Holland (The Be Good Tanyas)\,  JT Nero(of Birds of Chicago)\, Sean Hayes\, jam band ALO\, and bluegrass band Hot Buttered Rum.

They’ve been playing and writing music together for as long as they can remember and ‘The Clements Brothers’ marks their first project together since playing in the internationally touring grass-roots band\, ‘The Lonely Heartstring Band’ with whom they put out two albums on Rounder Records.
