SUMMARY:A capella quartet Windborne
DESCRIPTION:The New Revival Coffeehouse proudly presents renowned a cappella quartet Windborne on April 27\, 2024. \nAudiences and critics lavish praise upon the singers not only for their technical mastery\, but for the passion\, engagement\, and connection with each other and the audience that imbues each performance with a rare power. \n“The best musical discovery of the year…stunningly powerful. Windborne sets a new bar for harmony singing today!” NPR \n “…subverting expectations and redefining the genre [of vocal music]… just absolutely phenomenal!” BBC Traveling Folk \nBut there’s another\, crucial dimension to Windborne that guides and roots their artistry. They are adherents to folk music’s longtime alliance with social activism\, labor and civil rights\, and other movements that champion the oppressed\, the poor\, and the disenfranchised. Their songs burst with lyrics that\, while penned decades or centuries ago\, still ring true in modern times\, and Windborne’s dynamic harmonies breathe new life into these songs. \nTickets are $20 in advance at Eventbrite\, and $25 on the day of the concert.  Doors open at 7:00 and the concert begins at 7:30.

SUMMARY:The Nields
DESCRIPTION:With their unparalleled ability to blend pop craftsmanship\, folk sensibility\, and the influences of ’60s classic rock and ’90s alternative\, The Nields have created a distinctive musical style that defies categorization. Their songs\, imbued with intelligence and occasional humor\, offer poignant observations on life’s unexpected twists and turns. Apple Music describes their sound as “equal parts The Beatles\, the cranberries\, and Joni Mitchell\,” a testament to their unique fusion of melodic sensibilities. \nTickets: https://checkout.tito.io/me-thee-music/the-nields-2024

SUMMARY:Barnstar
DESCRIPTION:“Barnstar makes Bluegrass for people who hate Bluegrass. This ain’t your daddy’s Bluegrass. Except in the case of Jake Armerding. His dad is in the band.” \nBarnstar! began as the brainchild of Zachariah Hickman (bassist for Josh Ritter\, musical director for Ray Lamontagne) for a local bluegrass supergroup featuring some of Boston’s best musicians and songwriters. Using the familiar tools of the genre—guitar (Mark Erelli)\, fiddle (Jake Armerding)\, mandolin (Taylor Armerding) and banjo (Charlie Rose)—Barnstar! forges its own brand of song- based bluegrass\, gloriously harmonized and raucously played. \nThe band debuted in 2011 with C’mon!\, a mix of distinctive originals and unexpected covers (Neil Young\, Dawes\, The Traveling Wilburys) cut live in the studio. Despite juggling various high-profile sideman gigs behind other artists\, the lads in Barnstar! managed to cause quite a stir with relatively few appearances. Whether playing above 10\,000 feet in the Colorado mountains\, dressing up like pirates on a boat cruising around Boston Harbor\, or starting a small skirmish over the last CD in Shrewsbury\, England – shouts of “C’mon!” followed the band everywhere they went. \nhttp://www.wearebarnstar.com/video

SUMMARY:Martyn Joseph — Dan Pallotta opens
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for those age 18 and under. Visit oldslooppresents.org\, John Tarr Store in Rockport\, or The Bookstore of Gloucester. The suggested contribution at the door is $25 for adults\, $5 for those age 18 and under\, and $50 for families. \nTickets and more information\nMartyn Joseph is a completely unique and mind blowing artist. Take everything you think you know about singer songwriters….and rip it up. For one man and a guitar he creates a performance with a huge far-reaching sound that is energetic\, compelling and passionate. Be it to two hundred people or twenty thousand\, he blows the crowd away night after night. \nHe is gifted with the rare ability to speak to the soul with his expressive and poignant lyrics and has a career spanning 30 years\, 32 albums\, over a half a million record sales and thousands of live performances. \nCompared to Bruce Springsteen\, John Mayer\, Bruce Cockburn and Dave Matthews\, he has created his own style and reputation as a mesmerizing live performer and stands in his own right\, built on a reputation for giving what thousands have described as the best live music experience of their lives. A unique talent driven by passion\, social awareness and love for his trade\, he’s a jaw dropping guitar player who has developed a unique percussive style\, teamed up with a powerful show stopping voice\, and has been called “The Welsh Springsteen”. \nDan Pallotta is returning to music after a thirty-year hiatus. He says “Some songwriters have a lot to say about life when they are twenty. Dylan\, Joni Mitchell\, Springsteen. I didn’t really. It took me forty years to get a perspective on life. Much of my writing now comes from whatever wisdom I’ve accumulated in those years\, from my empathy for all those who suffer in the world\, who struggle in the desert between their potential and their reality\, their dream and their situation\, witnessed from the perspective of forty years in philanthropy and\, well\, just living. I love being this age. I love looking at the world\, the human condition\, and the cosmos from this perch on the tree of life. I try to put what I see from here into words\, and marry them to those three chords.”

SUMMARY:Anne Hills with Gail Finnie Rundlett at Linden Tree Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY\, MAY 18 NATIONAL TOURING PERFORMER ANNE HILLS \n                                                WITH GAIL FINNIE RUNDLETT  OPENING \nOn Saturday\, May 18th at 7:30pm\,  national touring singer-songwriter Anne Hills will return to the Linden Tree Coffeehouse. Regional favorite Gail Finnie Rundlett will open the show in the social hall of  Wakefield’s Unitarian Universalist Church. \nAnne Hills is one of the most beloved voices of the contemporary folk music scene receiving awards and recognition for her live performances\, her unique solo and collaborative recording projects\, and her overall artistry and benefit work. Her song “Follow That Road” was the title cut of the Martha’s Vineyard Songwriter Retreat and has been a certified folk classic since the late 1990s. Whether she is singing her own songs\, the words of six-year-old Opal Whiteley\, or her song settings of the Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley; accompanied with her guitar\, banjo\, or simply a Tibetan bell\, she puts her whole heart and soul into the moment. You won’t want to miss a chance to hear her songs and stories in person. She tours extensively\, winning over audiences with her warm\, lively and humorous performances. The AllMusic Guide says\, “A stunning soprano tone has made Anne Hills one of contemporary music’s premiere vocalists … Her knack for writing heartfelt songs [has] brought her to the upper echelon of her craft.” and \nTom Paxton says\, “Anne Hills is such an exquisite singer that it’s understandable that people might be swept up in the pure beauty of her voice and thereby overlook her writing. That would be a mistake. For me\, Anne’s writing\, in songs like ‘Follow That Road’ and many others\, is as direct\, melodic and deep as any work being done today. She is quite simply one of my absolute favorite songwriters.” With 23 recordings and new song projects in the works\, an evening of Anne Hills will leave the audience smiling.   For a preview listen on her website: www.annehills.com. \nGail Finnie Rundlett is a singer-songwriter\, drawing some of her repertoire from American traditional music. A long time Linden Tree audience pleaser\, she plays guitar\, ukulele and is considered to be one of the primary innovators on the Appala- chian dulcimer in New England. Her career in the Boston folk scene spans thirty- five years\, with four solo albums\, and two with her former a cappella group Taproot. She’s a dynamic singer whose optimistic spirit is infectious\, and her love for per- forming delights anyone who hears her. \nThanks to the Mass Cultural Council\, Wakefield’s Art Council tickets are $25 with students under 18 just  $10 .  Reservations recommended by calling 781-246-2836. SUMMARY:Vance Gilbert & finals of Performing Songwriter Competition featuring James Lee Baker\, Chris LaVancher & Allison Rose
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: NEW earlier showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\n\n\nWe are so thrilled to have Vance Gilbert conclude our 35th season! \nWe are also pleased to announce that James Lee Baker (Colorado)\, Chris LaVancher (Massachusetts)\, and Allison Rose (Rhode Island) have been chosen as the finalists for the Rose Garden Coffeehouse’s 32nd Performing Songwriter Competition. Join us on May 18 to cheer them on as they perform their original songs before the evening’s featured act: Vance Gilbert. Best of luck to each the finalists! Tickets: https://tinyurl.com/rg24contest \nVance is a versatile and influential acoustic singer-songwriter\, performer\, and coach. He has released 14 albums and performed at prestigious festivals and venues\, and he’s performed at the Rose Garden probably a half-dozen times over the years. His latest album\, “The Mother Of Trouble”\, showcases his storytelling skills and diverse musical influences. Vance is the perfect musician to inspire our trio of songwriters participating that night in our 32nd Performing Songwriter Competition. \nAbout Vance\n“If Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens had a love child\, with Rodney Dangerfield as the midwife\, the results might be something close to the great Vance Gilbert”\, says Richmond Magazine. \nVance’s new album\, “The Mother Of Trouble”\, features Grammy winner Lori McKenna on background vocals\, Juno award recipient and Bonnie Raitt Grammy hit song co-writer Joey Landreth on guitars\, and Americana-Roots master mandolinist Joe K. Walsh. With 4 bullies\, 4 deaths (3 of them murders)\, 3 moms\, 2 accidents\, 2 Black people\, 2 dogs\, 1 dog ball\, 1 gay kid\, and 1 missed flight thanks to gas station sushi\, this album benefits from the gifts of time and experience honing songwriting skills that put this most vital of acoustic storytellers at the top of the game. \nOh\, and Management wants to make sure to tell you that this is the 14th release for this acoustic stalwart. \n30 years into his career\, the songwriter’s influence can be felt all over the contemporary Folk and Americana realm as he has helped pave the way for many of the BIPOC artists who have followed. \nVance was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. Starting out hoping to be an R&B and jazz singer once at college\, there he discovered his affinity for the storytelling sensibilities of the acoustic singer-songwriter thing. Word spread like wildfire about Gilbert’s stage-owning singing and playing\, and Shawn Colvin invited him to be special guest on her 1992 Fat City tour where he took much of America by storm and by surprise. “With the voice of an angel\, the wit of a devil\, and the guitar playing of a god..” wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. \nNoted not only for being the ever consummate performer\, Gilbert has recorded 13 albums\, including 5 for Philo/Rounder Records. Along with being opener of choice for artists as varied as Arlo Guthrie\, Anita Baker\, The Milk Carton Kids\, and Southside Johnny\, the mid 2000’s found Gilbert opening 150+ shows for comedian George Carlin. \nGilbert has also been a prominent presence at some of the world’s most prestigious gatherings and halls\, among them the Newport\, Winnipeg\, Rocky Mountain\, Calgary\, Ottawa\, and Falcon Ridge Folk festivals\, the Kate Wolf Music Festival\, and Australia’s Woodford Folk and Mullum Music Festivals\, Mountain Stage\, Boston’s Symphony Hall\, Nashville’s Lyman Auditorium\, The Barns at Wolftrap\, and a private party for his veterinarian where there was terrific lo-mein. \nMost recently he’s been the opener of choice for Mad About You/Stranger Things star Paul Reiser’s stand-up shows (50 +) for the last 7 years\, along with his own busy acoustic music touring and coaching schedule. That current schedule includes Vance’s Monday Night Acoustic Pajama Party on YouTube. Having started the first week of the pandemic in 2020\, Vance has played a live\, themed\, weekly 90 minute mixed bag of originals and cover tunes to a rotating following of about 200 folks. 10 to 20% of his weekly tip jar is donated to a local 501(c)3 of his choice. At the time of this writing\, having done 155 of these shows has become newsworthy in itself. \nGilbert has been a songwriting\, performance\, and voice coach all around the world\, kinda\, from Australia to Winnipeg\, at all the festivals above plus The Kerrville and Rocky Mountain Song Schools\, he is currently on staff as Instructor/Professor at the University Of Colorado Denver and has a decade worth of summer programs at the Berklee College Of Music under his belt. What? Private coaching? Yes\, 6-10 students weekly too. \nConsidered by many to be an integral part of the national folk scene\, his previous record “Good Good Man” features an eclectic roster of musical types including rocker Mike Posner\, world renown Celtic harpist Aine Minough\, bluesman Chris Smither\, and Al Green’s organist Stacey Wade. \nGilbert runs 3 to 4 miles ever so slowly 5 days a week to stay sharp for the road and does historical aviation research and model building just for great nerdy fun. \nHe even has a tune on a Grammy Nominated children’s album. How rounded is that?

SUMMARY:Antje Duvekot
DESCRIPTION:Former Rolling Stone music editor Dave Marsh says: “This is a brilliant\, brilliant album. I have had this reaction once in the last 10 years and that was the first time I heard Patty Griffin.” \nAntje Duvekot has solidified her reputation as one of Boston’s top singer songwriters with “Big Dream Boulevard” her debut studio release and “the Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer” and “New Siberia” her follow-up albums. The debut CD was produced by Seamus Egan\, founder of the Irish super group\, SOLAS and the project was released on songwriter Ellis Paul’s label and quickly attracted international attention for Antje. It was voted “#1 Folk Release of 2006” by the Boston Globe and was named to the “Top10 Releases of the Year” by National Public Radio’s\, Folk Alley. Her follow up albums “the Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer” and “New Siberia” were produced by Richard Shindell and along side with Richard feature other “folk royalty” such as John Gorka\, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli. \n“What a blessing to have worked with someone as talented as Antje. With a voice like hers\, and songs as good as these\, a producer (especially a first-time producer!) just tries to get out of the way\, to do no harm\, and to let the artist speak for herself.” – Richard Shindell \n“Duvekot has gotten hotter\, faster than any local songwriter in recent memory. Her songs feel at once fresh faced and firmly rooted\, driven by the whispery sensuality of her voice. She believes in the redemptive power of the shared secret; and is utterly unafraid to mine the darkest corners of her life for songs that turn fear into resilience and isolation into community”. The Boston Globe \nAntje has won some of the top songwriting awards including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and in one of the nation’s top music markets\, she won the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. \nAntje has extensive touring experience\, criss-crossing the US and Europe many times. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined the The Celtic Connections Festival in Scotland and the Tonder Festival in Denmark. \nIn December of 2007\, The Bank of America featured Antje’s song “Merry Go Round” in a national TV advertising campaign seen by millions\, including a Super Bowl audience. Antje’s fast growing fan base\, the viral spreading of her music and a track record of sold-out shows are a testament to her growing popularity. Neil Dorfsman\, the producer of Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen and Sting says\, “When I first heard Antje I knew I was witnessing something very special. She creates an entire\, detailed world in verse\, and takes you there with beautiful and understated melody. Her songs are stunning paintings of color and shade and always generate the heat and light that real art should. In an unpoetic and ‘in your face’ world\, she is lyrical and subtle” \nIn 2010\, Antje played the TEDMED conference in san diego (among the unveiling of ozzie osbourne’s genome). according to CNN: “Then\, this morning\, the tone of the conference turned from intellectual to deeply emotional when Antje Duvekot got up with her guitar and sang about her grandmother descent into Alzheimer’s disease. Twitter revealed that I wasn’t the only one who was holding back tears – Duvekot’s song was all too relatable for those of us who have watched loved ones slip away. ‘And Anna tries to form a thought / But at the end she’s forgotten where she started from / There’s something she would like to say / But the words in her head seem to have got away’ she san

DESCRIPTION:This will be a little different. Both Bill and Don are story tellers as well as musicians. There will  be more story telling than most shows.\nWe had such a good time last April even though it was cold and wet across the street\, we are doing it again.\n\nBill Harley is well-traveled\, well-read\, well-educated\, well-spoken and well-loved. Accompanied by his guitar\, his narrative songs and stories\, both original and traditional\, are a celebration of our common humanity. Best known for his work with children and families\, his ability to navigate through a confusing world with humor and wisdom is evident in his masterful storytelling as well as his numerous award-winning recordings and books. A two-time Grammy winner\, he is vibrant\, outrageous\, unpredictable and genuine with songs and stories about growing up\, schooling and what it is to be human—our connections with one another and with the planet we share. Recognized by audiences and peers as one of the finest performing storytellers in the country\, his work has influenced a generation of children\, parents\, performing artists and educators. Bill tours internationally as a performing artist\, author and keynote speaker from his home in Seekonk\, Massachusetts.\n\n\nDon White- There is no one-word description for what Don White does. He has survived and thrived for more than twenty years\, bringing his audiences to laughter and tears in his live performances\, studio recordings\, and on the printed page. He is a storyteller-comedian-author-troubadour-folk singer-songwriter. He is a walking challenge to the phrase “file under.” Best to just sort him under “Don White.”

The suggested contribution at the door is $25 for adults\, $5 for those age 18 and under\, and $50 for families. \nTickets and more information\nDanielle Miraglia and the Glory Junkies is led by Boston singer/songwriter-guitarist Danielle Miraglia (2020 Billboard Blues Charts\, 2021 New England Music Awards Blues Artist of the Year).  Their sound combines the blues rock vibe of The Rolling Stones and Janis Joplin with Danielle’s signature lyrical ability to explore human nature at its best and worst. \nTheir album All My Heroes Are Ghosts touches on a lot of what might be on your mind these days – the loss of so many musical heroes on the title track\, our collective anxieties on “All On Fire\,” and more. \nThe music itself blends influences of some of Miraglia’s own musical heroes – The Rolling Stones\, Prince\, Janis Joplin etc. The band includes Laurence Scudder (Ryan Montbleau Band\, Spotted Tiger)\, Erik White (The Brothers McCann)\, Jim Larkin (Jesse Dee Band) and Chris Anzalone (Room Full of Blues\, Juliana Hatfield). Recorded with Dave Westner at the legendary Woolly Mammoth Sound in Waltham\, MA.

SUMMARY:Kenny White
DESCRIPTION:“I’d have to say that Kenny White has earned a place among my favorite singer/songwriters … and particularly\, lyricists.  As we say in the trade ‘he goes deep.’ A true wordsmith AND musician who reveals a fine sense of humor\, as well. Put on your headphones and listen carefully.”\n— David Crosby \n“Kenny White plays like a man possessed\, transferring all his energies into his keys\, keeping him safe off the streets and behind the Steinway.”\n— Frank Rizzo: New Haven Journal Courier \n“Kenny White is a quadruple threat – a singer\, songwriter\, pianist and producer with a knack for summing-up the human condition in half a song verse or less. (Take the lyrics “So you might as well put it on the line once in awhile\, Maybe leave something more than ashes in a pile\,” from his song “Five Girls.” Need we say more?”\n–Keyboard Magazine \n  \nKENNY WHITE comes to the world of the touring singer-songwriter following a long and successful musical journey. An accomplished pianist\, who also performs on guitar\, Kenny has now become more known for his clever lyrics. LONG LIST OF PRIORS\, his aptly named current album\, is the latest collection of original songs: snapshots of the human condition.  Audiences often comment that a Kenny White concert moves them to laughter and tears — sometimes within the same song! “If Mark Twain could sing and play piano like a virtuoso\, his name would be Kenny White.” –Stu Kuby\, The Strand\, Hudson Falls\, NY. Kenny recently completed an 18-month tour performing his original songs while traveling as the opener for Stephen Stills & Judy Collins\, and has toured for many years with Cheryl Wheeler. He is looking forward to returning to the road to perform his own full-length shows. \nBorn in New York City and raised across the river in Fort Lee\, NJ\, Kenny White began his career in the 1970s\, touring exclusively as the keyboard player for Jonathan Edwards and later with Livingston Taylor\, on Linda Ronstadt’s legendary\, “Living in the USA” tour. \nHe became a fixture in the NYC studio scene throughout the 1980s and 1990s\, producing and arranging hundreds of commercials for TV and radio\, beginning with “The Unsinkable Taste of Cheerios\,” nearly seven years of Chevrolet’s “Heartbeat of America” campaign\, countless ads for Coca Cola and many others. Commercial work enabled White to direct artists as renowned and varied as Linda Ronstadt\, Gladys Knight\, Mavis Staples\, Ricky Skaggs\, and Aaron Neville. White contributed to film soundtracks as writer/musician including Message in a Bottle\, Where the Heart Is and four films by Indie-director laureate\, John Sayles.  Kenny also appears on dozens of recordings of other musicians\, including Marc Cohn’s platinum debut. \nWhenever he could break free from the recording studios\, Kenny would often support other musicians in live concerts.  After being hailed by reviewers from the New York Times to the San Francisco Chronicle for his “thrilling” and “unique” piano playing\, White chose\, in 2001\, to devote himself to making his own album\, one that not only showcased his talent as a musician\, but also as a lyricist.  Friends such as Cheryl Wheeler invited White to tour as an opening act on behalf of his first album\, UNINVITED GUEST. He also toured as the Special Guest opener for Judy Collins\, who signed him to her own Wildflower Records label\, releasing SYMPHONY IN 16 BARS in 2005 and NEVER LIKE THIS in 2006. COMFORT IN THE STATIC\, released in 2010\, landed on many “Favorite Album of the Year” radio lists. \nKenny White’s record producing credits include Shawn Colvin’s Grammy-nominated song\, “I Don’t Know Why\,” as well as the last four solo CDs for Peter Wolf\, formerly with the J. Geils Band\, with a new album anticipated for 2022. Their second album\, SLEEPLESS was named one of Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” The productions with Wolf\, enabled Kenny to work with an array of guest artists including Merle Haggard and Keith Richards. \nWhite’s music has been discovered in the UK and Europe\, where he tours annually in the Spring. He was awarded the International Songwriting Award at the Premio Ciampi music festival in Livomo\, Italy. And though he has all but given up his days as a sideman\, in 2014\, he accepted an offer by none other than Tom Jones to  play in his ‘soul quartet’ for a sold-out\, three-week US tour. \nLONG LIST OF PRIORS\, his aptly named recent album\, is the latest collection of original songs: indelible snapshots of the human condition\, from heart-wrenching to hilarious and observed with the precision of a diamond cutter.  As on his past recordings\, Kenny White’s work in the studio enabled him to assemble a who’s who of musicians and guest artists\, including David Crosby\, Peter Wolf\, Larry Campbell\, Amy Helm and Catherine Russell\, along with his regular band featuring the dexterous Duke Levine on guitar\, shape-shifting Shawn Pelton (Saturday Night Live) on drums\, and the masterful Marty Ballou on bass.  Now add the horns\, strings\, and other surprising arrangements\, and LONG LIST OF PRIORS is a refreshingly original and multi-layered singer-songwriter recording. \nWhite spent five song-less years before catching the first spark that would soon lead to LONG LIST OF PRIORS. Kenny says\, “As usual\, this became a deeply personal record for me. A chronicle of how the heart copes with the passing years\, these tumultuous times\, and the struggle to find simplicity in a complex world. It took being able to tune out the noise and interference of that world before I could hear what was inside me. That’s the trick. I also wanted to make a pure ‘sounding’ record. Where you can lose yourself in the sonic landscape and feel like you are in the room with the musicians and singers.” \nhttps://kennywhite.net/biography/

DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse (NRCC)\, in conjunction with the Friends of the Flint Memorial Library\, is proud to present the first of three outdoor Showcase concerts this summer in the Gazebo at Ipswich River Park on Saturday\, June 15 at 4 PM.  In the event of rain\, the event will take place in the Activity Room of the Flint Memorial Library at 147 Park Street in North Reading.  This event is sponsored by the Massachusetts Cultural Council – North Reading Chapter. \nThis first Showcase concert will feature Ben Eramo and Andrew Pesaturo from “Scenes – A Billy Joel Experience” live\, in an unplugged Billy Joel and Elton John tribute!  Playing together since 2013\, “Scenes” has traveled all over New England and beyond\, including Las Vegas\, Seattle\, and Pittsburgh performing the Piano Man’s greatest hits from “Piano Man” to “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant”\, and beyond. Opening the show\, Rowley\, MA native\, Sean Godbout will be performing an acoustic set of originals and 1970’s era soft rock songs from artists like Lucinda Williams\, and Bob Dylan.
