The Ramblers draw their material primarily from Andrew’s original songs which are rooted in the slower\, dreamier side of indie-folk\, blues\, Americana and bluegrass.  Andrew Innes (Acoustic Guitar & Vocals) has been studying and performing music for almost 40 years. Andrew started at the age of 16 with harmonica and piano\, and then picked up saxophone in his senior year of high school. Over the years Andrew has fronted various jazz groups on alto and tenor saxophones; played washboard\, musical saw and harmonica with the wonderful NYC-based bluegrass/western swing band\, The Bootleg Remedy.  Andrew played saxophone and harmonica with indie-chamber pop supergroup Champale (featuring members of Clem Snide\, Luna & Nada Surf) and spent two years in the house band for the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus. He performed for many years with Uncle Jimmy’s Dirty Basement\, a provocatively unlikely collaboration between Henson-level puppeteers and an avant-garde rock band and added musical saw\, saxophones and accordion to the cinematic soundscapes of the instrumental band\, Anchor Tattoo. In recent years Andrew has shifted his primary focus to guitar\, dobro\, singing\, and songwriting and can be seen in the Boston area fronting the Reluctant Ramblers\, playing with the AKE Trio\, and accompanying singer-songwriter Carla Ryder. DESCRIPTION:It was Leo Tolstoy who said “All great literature is one of two stories; a man goes on a journey or a stranger comes to town\,” and in the case of Andrew Duhon and his latest album Emerald Blue\, both instances are true. Duhon temporarily left New Orleans\, his longtime home and musical muse in 2019\, finding himself inspired by the landscape of the Pacific Northwest and notably\, its colors—a hue he describes as ‘emerald blue’ for which the album is named\, the same shade looking back at him in his partner’s eyes. Had he overlooked the specific shade of her eyes while living below sea level? Or did the change of location open his mind more acutely? The record does just that: examine the familiar in the context of the unfamiliar. They have performed and recorded with John Sebastian\, Susan Tedeschi\, Pinetop Perkins and Rory Block. They have opened for Ray Charles\, Dr. John\, and Little Feat\, and performed on international radio and TV shows including Late Night with Conan O’Brien and A Prairie Home Companion. They continue to perform American roots music and their own compositions at festivals\, concert halls\, and clubs all over the world. As a working team\, Paul and Annie have racked up hundreds of thousands of miles on the road in the U.S. and Europe\, collaborated on original songs\, and released the Blues Foundation Award nominated TALKING GUITAR \, I WANT YOU TO KNOW (Tone-Cool/Artemis 1996)\, MOVING TO THE COUNTRY (2000)\, the W.C. Susan Tedeschi recorded an “unplugged” version of Paul’s Blues on a Holiday with Paul and Annie for her 2003 release\, Wait For Me. \nAnnie Raines was born in 1969 in Boston and grew up in the suburb of Newton\, Massachusetts. She picked up the blues harp at 17 and made her stage debut at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge a few months before her high school graduation. Enthralled by the recordings of Muddy Waters\, Little Walter Jacobs\, Big Walter Horton and Sonny Boy Williamson\, she became a fixture at Boston area blues jams. She briefly attended Antioch College and 1988 interned with Washington\, DC homeless rights activist Mitch Snyder\, who persuaded her to drop out of school to pursue her musical career. One of the few female blues harmonica players in the country\, Annie played the New England club circuit with local bands\, and traveled to Chicago where she met and played with many of her musical idols including Pinetop Perkins\, Louis Myers\, and James Cotton. She also enjoyed yearlong stints with the Tarbox Ramblers and the Susan Tedeschi Band\, going on to perform on Susan’s first three albums. She lives in Boston with her number one musical hero\, Paul Rishell. \nPaul Rishell was born in Brooklyn\, New York in 1950\, descended from a long line of Methodist preachers and Norwegian painters. At the age of ten\, he discovered that he could keep time on the drums\, though his feet didn’t reach the pedals. He started a band a few years later\, playing surf music and rock ‘n roll\, until a friend turned him on to the country blues records of Son House\, Robert Johnson\, Charley Patton\, and Blind Lemon Jefferson. He immediately took up the guitar and in the early 70’s Paul moved to Cambridge\, Massachusetts and had the chance to play with many of the first and second generation of blues masters — including Son House\, Johnny Shines\, Sonny Terry\, Brownie McGhee\, and Howlin’ Wolf. Paul Rishell’s debut recording\, BLUES ON A HOLIDAY (Tone-Cool) was released in 1990 to resounding critical acclaim. The album was half acoustic\, half electric\, and established Paul as a masterful\, versatile blues player and as well as a deeply soulful singer and songwriter. He followed that with SWEAR TO TELL THE TRUTH in 1993\, which featured heart-stopping solo performances as well as guest artists Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters and “Little”Annie Raines. Paul’s original music has been used in plays\, films\, and countless television shows including Friends\, Oprah\, and A&E’s Biography. He has built up a stellar reputation over 40 years as a performer\, teacher\, and torchbearer of the country blues tradition. His former students include Susan Tedeschi and Michael Tarbox. Dirt Road Blues\, Paul’s instructional video/CD-Rom for Truefire.com\, was released in 2008 with detailed demonstrations and transcriptions of his original songs and songs by Scrapper Blackwell\, Blind Boy Fuller\, and many others. DESCRIPTION:LINDEN TREE COFFEEHOUSE with Dave Gunning\, SATURDAY\, April 22 at 7:30 pm.    \n            Alison Rose is opening \nThe Linden Tree Coffeehouse will continue it 38th season of Bringing Joy to audiences on Saturday\, April 22 at 7:30 pm.  Bringing back from Canada for his third visit is the amazing singer-songwriter Dave Gunning with Allison Rose opening. \nWith a career spanning over two decades\, Dave Gunning is one of Canada’s folk music treasures – a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter who has earned multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards\, a Juno nomination and nine East Coast Music Awards for his well-crafted work. Dave has gained a reputation for being a great storyteller and engaging performer who has the profound ability to take listeners on a musical journey through his songs. Much of his material is about the underdogs\, heroes\, family\, the heart and reflects the messaging of social justice and carrying about the world around us. The fruits of those labours are now vividly on display on his collection of songs\, “Up Against The Sky”. \nDave’s  release\, “Up Against The Sky” was recognized with four 2020 Canadian Folk Music Award nominations; eight East Coast Music Awards\, a Canadian Independent Music Video Award; and an International Folk Music Award nomination. His efforts have attracted strong media and radio airplay support\, charting as the #1 most played Canadian and International ‘Artist’ & the #2 ‘Album’ on the US folk DJ Charts (October 2019). DESCRIPTION:John Flynn is an American singer-songwriter and activist known for his powerful music and tireless efforts on behalf of the lost and lonely\, the shackled and scarred..  His work\, in the words of Deanna McCloud\, Director of the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa\, OK\, “follows in the footsteps of Woody Guthrie\, Pete Seeger\, Kris Kristofferson\, and other social justice troubadours as he speaks the truth and gives a voice to society’s disenfranchised.  His work fills your heart and opens your eyes as he continues to walk the walk of a true advocate for equality\, justice\, and peace.”  One of the many recognitions he has received is the Phil Ochs Award for Music and Social Activism for Political and Social Justice.  In 2017\, John founded New Beginnings – Next Step\, Inc\, a non-profit dedicated to helping incarcerated and returning citizens successfully transition to freedom; this work has become the largest part of John’s multi-activity life.

There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $10 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe Doppelgängers \, Kenny Raskin and RF Berks\, make their triumphant return to the Church\, having played the Folk Coffeehouse inaugural concert in 2022. They will have just returned from Colombia\, where they were invited to play at the Sonida Selva Music Festival in Minca and record a live album. The two men met in 2015 at the Maine Fiddle Camp\, where they soon found out that many people at the camp thought they were brothers. The deal was sealed when RF’s daughter mistook Kenny for her father. Thus\, the Doppelgängers were born. \nBoth RF and Kenny have had their own musical careers as singer/songwriters\, but revel in the camaraderie of playing together. Their style is Americana\, with a touch of swing as well. While their careers have been different\, their love of acoustic music and singing harmony has brought them together and found them playing everywhere from living rooms to music festivals. \nKenny was 8 years old when his father’s friend Harry gave him a ukulele. He played that ukulele until 11 years old. Then he discovered girls\, and promptly bought a guitar. That ukulele\, however\, was the gateway into a fifty-year plus love affair with playing music on multiple instruments\, including banjo\, mandolin and bass.  In 2018\, Kenny released his debut CD\, MY GREATEST HITS!\, and in 2022 released his second CD\, Peace of Mind. He is also known internationally as an accomplished actor and theatre clown\, having appeared on Broadway and with Cirque du Soleil\, as well as on television and variety stages in the US\, France\, England\, Chile\, Germany and China. \nRF Berks found a Sears guitar in the attic when he was 15 and began carrying it everywhere he went. Whenever he met a kid that could play a song or guitar lick he would make them show him how it worked until eventually he learned enough to form a band. He learned most of what he knows about music long before he studied and obtained a degree in the subject. He has been writing songs – over one hundred – for twenty plus years\, and in 2019 he released an album entitled TREAT ME WELL\, which can be found on the usual streaming platforms. It was an eclectic mix of musical styles with contributing musicians from around the world. Francis is also an accomplished poet. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and the Concerts at First Church Saturday classical concert series\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events. \n
