SUMMARY:Les Sampou - Nov. 16\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\n\n\n\n\n\nLes Sampou (pronounced “Less Sampoo”) is an Americana singer-songwriter\, who got her start in the Boston folk scene and moved on to national prominence and acclaim. Sampou has performed at Montreal Jazz Festival\, SXSW\, Toronto Blues Festival\, Kerrville Folk Festival (where she won the New Folk Songwriting Award)\, Philadelphia Folk Festival\, Winnipeg\, and Falcon Ridge to name a few. Sampou has conducted workshops at Berklee School of Music and appeared on top syndicated radio programs such as Acoustic Cafe\, World Cafe\, and NPR. Sampou has released seven albums\, five on her own label and two on Rounder Records. Her album\, “Fall from Grace”\, topped the Gavin Americana Charts nationwide. Her release “Lonesomeville” charted number 2 on the US/European Americana F.A.R. Charts and led to her performance at the SXSW Conference in Austin\, TX. To date\, Sampou has released seven albums of original material (See Sales on Menu). In 2021\, Les won the 26th Annual International Songwriters Award for lyric writing for her song “LIES FROM TRUTH.” \nSampou\, who lives on the South Shore of Boston\, began playing in the streets in what she terms as “relatively late in life.” At twenty five\, when all her friends were getting married\, buying houses and planning for kids\, Sampou started playing guitar and writing\, hitting the pavement to Harvard Square\, the tunnels of the MBTA subway\, and anywhere she could open her case for coin and applause. It was there she found her voice and polished her guitar playing and wrote the first of her prolific collection of songs\, many of which you will find on this site organized by genre. \nAfter cutting her teeth in the streets\, Les began playing area clubs\, doing the 9 pm – 1 am shifts for little or no cash that she sums up as “paying her dues.” After a couple years of the club scene\, Sampou found the coffeehouse scene. She describes this period by saying\, “Being in front of a listening audience was nerve wracking; my hands would shake and my voice would seize up. But I was hooked.” Les worked her stage fright and didn’t stop writing. Her first album “SWEET PERFUME” caught the attention of legendary DJ Dick Pleasants and it soon was on the doorstep of Rounder Records where she was immediately signed. Rounder released “Fall From Grace” and it hit the top of the charts of Gavin Americana Radio. \nSampou’s third disc\, the eponymously-titled album “LES SAMPOU\,” was a departure from her folk and blues sound and her penchant for rock began to color her voice and her writing. The CD was well received in the music industry despite Rounder’s reluctance to support the album as it veered too much from Sampou’s earlier album. John Black\, writing in Digital City said about the disc\, “Les Sampou’ is a remarkable CD full of the kind of songs you play over and over again. Listening to songs like ‘I Want You’ — and believe me I’ve listened to it enough to wear a groove in my CD — you can only wonder why Sampou isn’t in regular rotation on radio stations across the country. Sampou’s mature voice and intelligent heartfelt lyrics make the current flavors of the month on the radio sound like the lightweights they are.” \nSampou and Rounder parted ways and Les released her first all-acoustic\, country-blues album\, ‘BORROWED & BLUE’” on her own label\, MoNando Music. Always side-stepping categorization\, this time Sampou put out a collection of the guitar-based country-blues—original and classics—tunes that were a staple in Les’s live shows. Jay Miller\, Music Critic for The Patriot Ledger reviewed the album\, writing\, “Sampou’s guitar work is breathtaking–her six-string mentor Paul Rishell must be proud. Most notably her vocal work is thrilling\, adding layers of emotional depth to this eclectic mix of four Sampou originals\, old classics by the likes of Mississippi Fred McDowell and Blind Willie McTell and some surprises\, like Bob Dylan’s Meet Me in the Morning. An understated triumph.” \nBut\, it wasn’t until her album ‘LONESOMEVILLE\,’ that Sampou feels like she “hit her stride.” Pairing up with recording engineer Chris Rival\, Sampou and her all-star band of Boston’s cream of the crop session players (Kevin Barry/Guitars\, Mike Dinallo/Guitars\, Paul Kochanski/Bass\, Andy Plaisted/drums\, Jim Gambino/Keys\, Jimmy Ryan/Mandolin\, David Ogden and Mark Cunningham\, Vocals) recorded Lonesomeville live in two days. Ducky Carlisle\, mix engineer\, added his acclaimed rock edge to the Americana set of blues and soul-tinged country tunes. Lyrically\, Lonesomeville sums up what Sampou writes about best—love gone wrong\, hard goodbyes\, and honky tonk heartbreak.

After a decade in music\, David Francey is known as one of Canada’s finest tunesmiths and a champion of the Everyman\, admired for his less-is-more approach to writing. It’s amazing how he manages to address deep stuff with such spare ingredients” \n… The Edmonton Journal \n“One of Canada’s outstanding poets\, songwriters\, storytellers. That’s David Francey with a lovely little tribute to tonight.”\n… Ron MacLean\, Hockey Night in Canada Following the Canadian Heritage Classic Hockey Game \nDavid Francey is a Scottish-born Canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter\, who has become known as “one of Canada’s most revered folk poets and singers” (Toronto Star). Born in Ayrshire\, Scotland to parents who were factory workers\, he moved to Canada when he was twelve. For decades\, he worked across Canada in rail yards\, construction sites\, and in the Yukon bush\, all the while writing poetry\, setting it to melodies in his head and singing it to himself as he worked. \nA truly authentic folk singer\, Francey is a documentarian of the working person who never imagined earning a living from his music. But when he was in his 40s\, his wife\, artist Beth Girdler\, encouraged him to share his songs and sing in public. The reaction was instant. His first album Torn Screen Door came out in 1999 and was a hit in Canada. Since then\, he has released eleven albums\, won three Juno Awards and has had his songs covered by such artists as The Del McCoury Band\, The Rankin Family\, James Keelaghan and Tracy Grammer. \nFrancey also had the honour of receiving the prestigious SOCAN Folk Music Award as well as taking home the Grand Prize in both the International Acoustic Music Award and in the Folk category for the John Lennon Songwriting Award. \n“David’s straightforward songs tell honest stories of real people and real places. Poetic perception and a keen eye for the heart of the matter are trademarks of the man and his music. His songs and stories are a direct connection for audiences seeking depth and meaning in the day-to-day.” Shelter Valley Folk Festival \nDavid Francey was born in Ayrshire\, Scotland where he got his first taste of the working life as a paperboy. At age 10 he was devouring the newspapers he delivered\, establishing a life-long interest in politics and world events while developing the social conscience that forms the backdrop of his songs. \nHe was twelve when his family immigrated to Toronto. He says he can trace his love of the land\, the history\, and the people of his adopted country to weekend family drives exploring southern Ontario. Music played a large part in these family outings. They sang traditional Scottish tunes as they drove through the Canadian countryside. Dad and sister Muriel sang melody\, while mother and David sang harmonies. \nHis attachment to Canada grew with travel. He hitched across the country three times\, then thumbed his way to the Yukon. This attachment surfaces in his songs of rail lines\, farms\, and the St. Lawrence Seaway. He grew to understand the people while working in Toronto train yards\, the Yukon bush\, and as a carpenter in the Eastern Townships. These experiences colour his first CD\, Torn Screen Door\, with songs like Hard Steel Mill\, Gypsy Boys\, and Working Poor and his second\, Far End of Summer\, with Highway\, Flowers of Saskatchewan and February Morning Drive. \nIn concert David is a singer and a storyteller. His wry humour and astute observations combined with his openhearted singing style have earned him a loyal following. \nDavid lives with his wife\, artist Beth Girdler in the quiet but charming Lanark Highlands in southern Ontario. They are visited often by their son Colin\, daughters Amy and Julia and grandkids Tristan\, Alice and Millicent. \n© 2019 Beth Girdler \nhttps://www.davidfrancey.com/

The suggested contribution at the door is $25 for adults\, $5 for those age 18 and under\, and $50 for families. \nTickets and more information\nHeather Pierson is a New Hampshire based singer/songwriter\, pianist\, song leader\, and performer with a passion for cultivating joy\, both onstage and off. With a toe in each of the realms of New Orleans jazz\, blues\, and folk\, her multi-genre songwriting places her in a category all her own\, one honed by decades of diligent practice and curious exploration. Her trio\, with Shawn Nadeau on bass/vocals and Craig Bryan on percussion/vocals\, performs a rich variety of Heather’s originals\, jazz and blues standards\, and unique re-workings of familiar classics. Their live performances feature their brilliant musicianship\, stirring three-part vocal harmonies\, boundless joy\, and a desire to share from the heart. \nIn their annual December offering\, The Heather Pierson Trio performs the entirety of the ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ album as recorded by the Vince Guaraldi Trio\, as well as other Guaraldi compositions and holiday favorites. The musical score for ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’\, composed by the late Vince Guaraldi and first broadcast in December of 1965\, is just as poignant and touching as the story and includes the hugely popular hit ‘Linus and Lucy’. Guaraldi’s gentle jazz riffs established musical trademarks that\, to this day\, still prompt smiles of recognition.

SUMMARY:Ellis Paul with Radoslav Lorkovic
DESCRIPTION:Paul is a four-piece band wrapped into one: He expertly mimics the sound of a drum set with his guitar while simultaneously creating enticing chord progressions\, he sings and blows his harmonica at the same time. – Nina Matti \n“Despite his success and sense of history\, Mr. Paul remains an artist with his eye on the future and an interest in discovering the transformative potential in his music.” – The New York Times \n  \nEllis Paul \nSome artists document their lives through their music. Others chronicle their times. It’s a rare artist who can do both\, telling their own story through songs that also encapsulate the essence of people and places who have helped define their era overall. Woody Guthrie\, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen all come to mind. Yet few songwriters can relate their own life to the life experienced by others who find that common bond — the exhilaration of the open road\, the celebration of heroes\, the coming of age\, the hope for redemption\, the sharing of love\, intimate\, passionate and enduring — the way that Ellis Paul does.\nSmart. Literate. Poetic. Singular. Storyteller. Folksinger. \nYes\, but Ellis Paul is far more. How much more? An incredible 30-year career. 15 Boston Music Awards. 20 albums. Newport Folk Festival. Carnegie Hall. Hundreds of venues from Alaska to Miami\, Paris\, and London. Dozens of compilations\, commercials\, documentaries\, TV shows\, and blockbuster movie soundtracks. He is one of the finest singer/songwriters of his generation — for many\, the face of contemporary folk music — and probably no artist on the acoustic music scene is better loved by fans\, or more respected by his contemporaries than Ellis Paul. \nRadoslav Lorkovic \nDrawing from a multitude of influences ranging from elegant classical and jazz styles to the rawest\, most basic blues\, country and soul\, Radoslav Lorković has taken on an unusually broad musical spectrum and refined it into his distinctive piano style. Born in Zagreb\, Croatia  Radoslav moved to the United States at age six. He had a foothold on a classical music career when at age fourteen he was sidetracked by a blues scale that a friend had taught him. Lorković currently tours the world regularly appearing at prestigious events such as the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival\, WOMAD\, Winnipeg\, Calgary\, Edmonton and Ottawa folk festivals\, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, Mountain Stage\, Prairie Home Companion\, eTown as well as a litany of Italian castles and villas.
