DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell \nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its fifth concert of the 2023-2024 season featuring the Cooke Family Singers at First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, February 16\, 2024 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $15 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe Cooke Family Singers is comprised of family members Frances\, Ruth\, and George\, plus an ever-changing and unpredictable set of special guests that can range from their 8-year-old niece to lifelong musician friends.  Their sets are constructed and tailored to each performance venue\, so they can range from an intimate trio with acoustic guitar to a full band.  Vocal duties rotate throughout the performance as our goal is a variety of styles and textures.  Cooke Family Singers sets will feature George’s original songs\, which tend to be humorous and slightly cynical takes on the foibles of our everyday lives. Some examples are the song “I Didn’t Know that You Owned This Road” about driving in Boston or “I’m Going to be a Park Ranger”\, which is a wistful fantasy about a job change. Cooke Family Singers’ other songs are curated covers that feature Ruth and Frances’ tight harmonies and can range from Lake St. Dive to Johnny Cash to songs from the musical “Hamilton”. They perform at porch fests and other musical events in the Northeast.  During the pandemic\, the Singers did a biweekly series of online “hootenanny’s” that were broadcast on Facebook.  The Cooke Family Singers felt it was a small way to try to build some sense of community during a very difficult time.  They are looking forward to participating in the Friday Folk Coffeehouse Series on Fri\, Feb 16\, 2024. Their music can be found on George’s Bandcamp site: https://georgecooke.bandcamp.com/. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and the Concerts at First Church Saturday classical concert series\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events.

DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present its February Showcase.  The performers are: Woody Carpinella\, Conor Hennessy and Paul Simion\, Aaron Tornberg and Art Grossman .  Each performer will do about a 30 minute set. Having been a team since 2012\, their knack for transforming life’s challenges into lyrical narratives stands out. Their beautiful harmonies\, acoustic guitar work\, and warm stage presence have led them to perform alongside folk stalwarts like Livingston Taylor and Mark Erelli. Their latest album\, “Sure\,” was entirely produced by Eric\, and they’re set to release a related film in 2023. \nErin Ash Sullivan\, also rooted in Massachusetts\, presents a nuanced take on folk music. Rose Garden attendees will remember her as the winner of our 2023 Performing Songwriter Competition. Originally one-half of the folk pair\, Edith O.\, with Amy Speace\, Erin took time away for personal commitments before making a resonant return. Her 2021 solo debut\, “We Can Hear Each Other\,” found success\, particularly her track “Fireflies.” Gaining attention within the folk community\, her accolades include the Mark Erelli Judge’s Choice Award. Erin’s artistry\, often described as both delicate and evocative\, evokes comparisons to established artists\, notably Dar Williams.

SUMMARY:Antje Duvekot returns to Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Antje returns to the Harmony on the Green stage after accompanying Catie Curtis at her show here back in May. The audience was delighted by her beautiful harmonies on Catie’s songs\, as well as her sharing a few of her own songs with us. We are thrilled to welcome her back! \nAntje has won some of the top songwriting awards including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and in one of the nation’s top music markets\, she won the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. Two of her albums found her working with Richard Shindell as producer\, as well as other “folk royalty” such as John Gorka\, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli. \nAntje has extensive touring experience\, criss-crossing the US and Europe many times. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined festivals in Scotland and Denmark. \nThe Bank of America featured Antje’s song “Merry Go Round” in a national TV advertising campaign\, including a Super Bowl audience. Neil Dorfsman\, producer for Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen and Sting says\, “When I first heard Antje I knew I was witnessing something very special. She creates an entire\, detailed world in verse\, and takes you there with beautiful and understated melody. Her songs are stunning paintings of color and shade and always generate the heat and light that real art should. In an unpoetic and ‘in your face’ world\, she is lyrical and subtle” \nAntje has played the TEDMED conference in San Diego. CNN said of the experience\, “Then\, this morning\, the tone of the conference turned from intellectual to deeply emotional when Antje Duvekot played her guitar and sang about her grandmother’s descent into Alzheimer’s disease. Duvekot’s song was all too relatable for those of us who have watched loved ones slip away. ‘And Anna tries to form a thought / But at the end she’s forgotten where she started from / There’s something she would like to say / But the words in her head seem to have got away’ she sang.” \nAntje’s most recent album\, New Wild West was released in September\, 2023.  \nOpening for Antje will be Eva Gertz. Eva is an eclectic artist of many mediums\, born and raised in Melrose\, MA where she started piano lessons at a young age. After attending Berklee College of Music (class of 2015)\, she spent six years developing her multi-faceted music career in NYC. This led her to arrange for Broadway and assist top-rank composers\, perform as a dueling pianist on cruise ships\, and self produce her original singer-songwriter releases along with ultra-creative music videos which share an uplifting message of self-love. \nShe currently lives in Somerville and teaches arranging at Berklee among many other musical jobs and projects. Over-riding all else\, however\, is the brilliance of his talent…”\n(Cornish Guardian) \n  \nBeppe Gambetta is a guitarist\, vocalist\, researcher and composer born in Genova\, Italy in 1955 who developed a style of concert presentation that brings American and European Roots to speak together with one voice. In his unique approach\, Gambetta blends energetic grooves with passionate melodies\, giving new life to sources from different times\, periods and places. In addition\, the original music he composes gives contemporary influences to traditional roots music. \nHe first came to the United States in 1985 and then returned in 1988 to travel through the US with the first available Sony digital DAT machine. He managed to meet and record a collection of duets with 12 of the most admired guitarists in the American bluegrass/folk genre including Norman Blake\, Mike Marshall\, Charles Sawtelle\, John Jorgenson and David Grier. \nIn 1989 Beppe Gambetta crossed the “Iron curtain” to perform at the Porta Festival in Czeckoslovakia and sensed the revolutionary wave that in those days expressed itself also thorugh the music. In that occasion he started an important collaboration with American banjo master Tony Trischka. \nIn the 1990s Gambetta started to tour on a regular basis with American guitar legend Dan Crary (in Europe and then in the US and Australia). Dan Crary was able to introduce him to the organizers of the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield\, KS\, a major guitar event and home to important guitar contests. Gambetta’s performances at Winfield opened the door to him becoming a regular part of the American Festival scene. \nIn 1993 he met and collaborated with Gene Parsons\, a former member of the legendary folk-rock band\, The Byrds. Parsons performed on Gambetta’s first solo American CD “Good News From Home” (1995) on the then preeminent folk and Celtic label “Green Linnet”. In this album\, Gambetta started to blend his love for American Roots with elements of European tradition moving away from being known strictly as a hot bluegrass picker to create his own multi-national style. \nIn the late 1990s he launched a project to research the forgotten music of the Italian String Virtuosi of the turn-of-the-century. He focused on reviving the music and re-building the instruments of legendary Genovese harp-guitarist Pasquale Taraffo (1887-1937). This work led to the recording of two CDs “Serenata” (1997) and “Traversata” (2001) with classical mandolinist Carlo Aonzo and American mandolin icon David Grisman. \nHe has continued his research along the path of musicians and emigrations including to date producing shows of Italian revival in Europe\, US and Argentina. \nIn 2001\, Beppe Gambetta and his wife Federica Calvino Prina inaugurated “Beppe Gambetta Acoustic Nights”\, a series of annual concerts that bring together different top-notch International musicians each year\, planned around a special musical “theme”. Held each spring at the 1000-seat Teatro della Corte in Genova\, Italy for three or four consecutive evenings\, the performances have established themselves as one of the preeminent events in the European musical scene and are regularly broadcast live by the Italian National Radio (RAI Radio 3). \nFrom 2002 to today\, Beppe Gambetta focused his work mainly on his solo career\, touring constantly and naturally and seamlessly joining the shores of the two continents\, Europe and America\, creating in spite of the interposed ocean a musical fusion where American root music and Ligurian tradition\, emigration songs and folk ballads\, steel string guitars and vintage harp guitars not only co-exist but interact\, weaving a deep dialog unaware of any rigid classification. \nOn April 23\, 2019 Beppe was awarded with the title of “Genoa Ambassador To The World” by the Genoa Mayor Marco Bucci for the following reason: \n“Beppe Gambetta has built countless bridges between Genoa and the Americas\, combining the rich culture of his hometown with the beauty of the American roots and adding in his compositions contemporary influences to the traditions he mastered. Mike Laureanno\, our Winter Potpourri Winner\, will perform an opening set. \n Peter Mulvey has been a songwriter\, road-dog\, raconteur and almost-poet since before he can remember. Raised working-class Catholic on the Northwest side of Milwaukee\, he took a semester in Ireland\, and immediately began cutting classes to busk on Grafton Street in Dublin and hitchhike through the country\, finding whatever gigs he could. Back stateside\, he spent a couple years gigging in the Midwest before lighting out for Boston\, where he returned to busking (this time in the subway) and coffeehouses. Small shows led to larger shows\, which eventually led to regional and then national and international touring. The wheels have not stopped since. \nPeter has kept busy with nineteen records\, an illustrated book\, thousands of live performances\, a TEDx talk\, a decades-long association with the National Youth Science Camp\, opening for luminaries such as Ani DiFranco\, Emmylou Harris\, and Chuck Prophet\, appearances on NPR\, and an annual autumn tour by bicycle supporting causes such as the Trustees of Reservations. Mulvey never stops. He has built his life’s work on collaboration and an instinct for the eclectic and the vital. Peter folds everything he encounters into his work: poetry\, social justice\, scientific literacy\, & a deeply abiding humanism are all on plain display in his art. SUMMARY:WS Monroe & Friends at Stone Soup Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Many Stone Soup Coffeehouse attendees probably know WS Monroe\, or “Bill\,” as one of the dedicated sound people behind the big board at each of our shows. What they may not know is that Bill is also an accomplished musician and he will be performing for the first time in his own Stone Soup show on March 23\, 2024 at The Music Mansion\, 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906. Box Office opens at 6:00. Doors to the listening room open at 6:30. The show begins at 7 pm.\n\nMonroe has been playing music for more than 50 years. First influenced by the country music he heard as a child\, and then by the folk-rock of the Lovin’ Spoonful and the Byrds\, and by the folk revival of the ’60’s\, he began to attend the Philadelphia Folk Festival in 1969 where he was introduced to real traditional music. With all these influences (and some Beatles\, Motown\, blues\, and jazz)\, he performs what he calls “eclectic folk music”. He is mainly a singer\, and sometimes he just sings\, with no accompaniment. However\, when he first wanted to sing\, that option did not occur to him\, so he taught himself to play the guitar\, and then the mandolin\, and then the concertina and the mountain dulcimer. He usually performs solo\, but also plays with others: sometimes with his wife and children (now grown)\, and sometimes with Matteo Casini (who can do a lot of things he can’t do on the guitar)\, and sometimes with anyone who is willing to join him. More recently\, he has been a regular member of The Providence Wholebellies\, a wild and eclectic band\, and with the Quahog Quire\, an a cappella group that does work songs\, hymns\, children’s songs\, and more. More recently\, the Quire has produced an offshoot\, the Quahog Qafé\, which adds instrumentation to its usual mix. Tonight\, Bill will be accompanied by some of these talented friends.\n\nTickets are $22 and are available at the door or with reservation through our website.

But some recent arrivals have been fabulous additions. \nHayley Reardon is a critically acclaimed folk/pop artist and a storyteller in the truest sense of the word. Her songs serve as postcards from an artist brave enough to take the road less traveled. The songstress made the decision to begin living life boldly when she left Nashville to tour the world playing her music. In addition to having recently been based in Dachau\, Germany for a six month artist residency program awarded by the city\, she has spent the past 5 years carrying her songs and guitar all over the globe — gathering experiences\, inspirations\, and soulful connections along the way. The artist masterfully channels her colorful stories through music\, capturing even the most subtle nuances of the human experience with a striking clarity. \nThe Clements Brothers are George and Charles Clements\, identical twins from New England. They’ve been playing and writing music together for as long as they can remember and ‘The Clements Brothers’ marks their first project together since playing in the internationally touring grass-roots band\, ‘The Lonely Heartstring Band’ with whom they put out two albums on Rounder Records. With roots\, rock\, bluegrass\, jazz\, and classical influences\, George (on guitar) and Charles (on bass) aim to capture their singer-songwriter sensibilities in a unique blended voice\, at once enthralling and intimate\, groovy and serene. They are often joined by drummer Mike Harmon\, who joined the band after an impromptu late night set at the Ossipee Music festival\, and adds his unique roots-conscious musicality to the group’s evolving sound.  The trio is a fusion of each member’s unique musical journey\, and the result is music all its own\, filled with vocal harmonies\, instrumental virtuosity\, and a genuine love of song.
