SUMMARY:Eileen Ivers
DESCRIPTION:All non-refunded ticket holders – Your tickets will be good for this new date. If this date does not work for you\, you can request a reimbursement. Please email your request to pfmsconcerts@gmail.com .  \nPlease spread the word and let’s pack the theater for Eileen Ivers. \n… \nShe’s been called a “sensation” by Billboard magazine and “the Jimi Hendrix of the violin\,” by The New York Times. “She electrifies the crowd with a dazzling show of virtuoso playing” says The Irish Times \nEileen and her full ensemble will rock the Park Theatre in Jaffrey on Saturday night.  They have headlined prestigious performing arts centers\, and numerous symphonies\, performed at major festivals worldwide\, and have appeared on national and international television. The L.A. Times proclaims\, “Ivers’ presentation was music with the kind of life and spirit that come together when talented artists from different backgrounds find the linkages that connect all forms of music…no wonder the audience loved every minute.” \n“Not everything in life is beautiful\, but there sure is beauty in life. To seek it\, embrace it\, and let it shine embodies a good life. Scatter the light…” EILEEN \nIt is a rare and select grade of spectacular artists whose work is so boldly imaginative and clearly virtuosic that it alters the medium. It has been said that the task of respectfully exploring the traditions and progression of the Celtic fiddle is quite literally on Eileen Ivers’ shoulders. The Washington Post states\, “She suggests the future of the Celtic fiddle.” \nIvers’ recording credits include over 80 contemporary and traditional albums and numerous movie scores. Eileen is hailed as one of the great innovators and pioneers in the Celtic and World music genres. \nGrammy awarded\, Emmy nominated\, London Symphony Orchestra\, Boston Pops\, guest starred with over 50 orchestras\, original Musical Star of Riverdance\, Nine Time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion\, Sting\, Hall and Oates\, The Chieftains\, ‘Fiddlers 3’ with Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and Regina Carter\, Patti Smith\, Al Di Meola\, Steve Gadd\, founding member of Cherish the Ladies\, movie soundtracks including “Gangs of New York”\, performed for Presidents and Royalty worldwide…this is a short list of accomplishments\, headliners\, tours\, and affiliations. Fiddler Eileen Ivers has established herself as the pre-eminent exponent of the Irish fiddle in the world today. \nThe daughter of Irish immigrants\, Eileen Ivers grew up in the culturally diverse neighborhood of the Bronx\, New York. Rooted in Irish traditional music since the age of eight\, Eileen proceeded to win nine All-Ireland fiddle championships\, a tenth on tenor banjo and over 30 championship medals\, making her one of the most awarded persons ever to compete in these prestigious competitions. \nBeing an Irish-American\, the intrigue of learning more about the multicultural sounds of her childhood took hold. After graduating magna cum laude in Mathematics from Iona College and while continuing her post-graduate work in Mathematics\, Eileen fully immersed herself in the different genres of music which she experienced growing up in New York. With “unIVERSal roots”\, her energetic\, joyous\, passionate band\, Eileen continues to connect music\, cultures\, stories\, and emotions that tie us together. In 2019\, Iona College conferred upon Eileen Ivers the degree of Doctor of Arts\, honoris causa for her “lifelong commitment to innovation\, excellence and deep dedication to bringing people together through music.” \n  \n  \nhttps://www.eileenivers.com/about \n

SUMMARY:Martin and Eliza Carthy
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 23\, 2024\, 7pm ET \nFirst Parish of Sudbury\, 327 Concord Rd\, Sudbury\, MA (handicap accessible)\nAdmission: \n\nGeneral admission: $25\nStudents: $10\n17 and under free\n\nFor more than 50 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s greatest innovators\, one of its best loved\, most enthusiastic and\, at times\, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill\, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers\, not only from within the folk scene\, but also far beyond it. Trailblazing musical partnerships with\, amongst others\, Steeleye Span\, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums\, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums\, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels (Topic TSCD527) was the latest. Whether in the folk clubs (which he continues to champion)\, on the concert stage or making TV appearances (he was the subject of the acclaimed Originals music documentary strand on BBC 2) – there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn’t played. \nEliza Carthy is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and engaging performers of her generation. Twice nominated for the Mercury Prize and winner of innumerable other accolades over a 20 year career\, Eliza has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists including\, Paul Weller\, Rufus and Martha Wainwright\, Patrick Wolf and Bob Neuwirth. More than most\, Eliza Carthy has revitalised folk music and captured the most hardened of dissenters with intelligent\, charismatic and boundary-crossing performance. \nFSSGB is honored to be able to bring you this concert\, which Martin and Eliza are fitting in before they head off to be on staff at TradMaD Camp in Plymouth\, MA.

DESCRIPTION:Weather permitting\, this concert will take place on the covered patio of the hosts’ home in Rockport\, Massachusetts. Send email to whalecoveproductions@gmail.com to get more information or to request an invitation. \nCraig Bickhardt is a singer/songwriter of the old school – you can hear echoes of such ‘60s folk revival artists as Tom Rush\, Gordon Lightfoot and Eric Andersen in his work. Added to this is the melodic sophistication of a Jimmy Webb or a Paul Simon\, as well as a spare but telling lyric approach. “I admire songwriters like Woody Guthrie and poets like Robert Frost because they created functional art\,” he says. “Too much music today is just for the singer\, not for Everyman. I think of my work as a ‘Please Touch’ museum – I want my songs to be sung until they’re worn out.”

SUMMARY:Crys Matthews
DESCRIPTION:“A passionate and powerful blend of infectious Americana melodies and folky instrumentation\, Matthews delivers her honest songwriting through a beautifully raw and unfiltered lens. Oozing soul\, her voice bleeds with emotion and gratitude\, while simple piano melodies and upbeat percussion fill you with appreciation and love for the people around us who fight for change.” — Ear Milk \n  \nAlready being hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie\,” Nashville resident Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster child for intersectionality\,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” She is made for these times and\, with the release of her new\, hope-fueled\, love-filled social justice album Changemakers\, MaNhews hopes to take her place alongside some of her heroes in the world of social-justice music like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Holly Near. Of MaNhews\, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says\, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice\, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.” \nMatthews began performing in 2010 but cemented her acclaim at Lincoln Center as the 2017 NewSong Music and Performance Competition grand prize winner. That year she also released two new projects\n— her album of thoughtful songs on love and life called The lmagineers\, and her EP called Battle Hymn for an Army of Lovers\, which tackles social justice themes. MaNhews also won the People‘s Music Network’s Social Justice Songs contest at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. Loyal fans quickly followed as Matthews racked up performances at large music festivals and prestigious venues across the country including the Sundance Film Festival\, Eerrville Folk Festival\, and locally at venues like The Birchmere\, The Hamilton\, Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center\, and Jammin’ Java. In her TedTalk about difficult conversations called “Sing\, Don’t Shout — An Alternative Approach” Matthews spoke about being born and raised in a small town in southeastern North Carolina by an A.M.E. preacher\, and how she witnessed the power of music from an early age. A former drum major and classically trained clarinetist turned folk singer\, Matthews is using her voice to answer Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to be “a drum major for justice.” \n“I believe in hope\,” Matthews said. “As a social-justice songwriter\, it is my duty to keep breathing that hope and encouragement into the people who listen to my music.” And\, from the title track to the last track\, Changemakers does just that all while tackling some heavy topics like immigration\, the opioid crisis\, Black Lives Matter\, and gun safety to name a few. “Ani DiFranco said\, “People used to make records as in a record of an event\,”” said Matthews\, “so I hope that these songs will serve as a time capsule\, a record of the events of the last four years and what it was like to live through them.” Crys Matthews’s thoughtful\, realistic\, and emotional songs speak to the voice of our generation and remind us why music indeed soothes the soul. \nhttns://www.crvsmatthews.com/

SUMMARY:Jack Williams
DESCRIPTION:This will be a little different. We are doing it on a Thursday night because that is the only day Jack has this NE trip. It will be his last and I wanted to get to say goodbye. Jack was one of the first people to play this series 28 years ago. Please give him a good sendoff \n“…Perhaps even more exciting than seeing Bob Dylan\, though\, was the reaction that Jack Williams got. ..He practically blew the top off the tent! Man\, oh man\, can that guy play guitar! He completely overshadowed more well-known performers…They were wonderful\, but Jack Williams was playing in an entirely different league. I was astounded by how good he is.”\nMark Cashman\, upon hearing Jack for the first time at the Newport Folk Festival. \n“Jack is the best guitar-player I’ve ever heard.”\nPeter Yarrow (of Peter\, Paul & Mary) \n“…an American Treasure” Mickey Newbury

SUMMARY:Butcher\, Baglio\, and Estes
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for those age 18 and under. Visit oldslooppresents.org\, John Tarr Store in Rockport\, or The Bookstore of Gloucester. The suggested contribution at the door is $25 for adults\, $5 for those age 18 and under\, and $50 for families. \nTickets and more information\nButcher\, Baglio\, and Estes is Jon Butcher\, Sal Baglio\, & Allen Estes. Three veteran musicians and familiar names from the Boston music scene. Their debut album\, GYPSY CARAVAN is 11 new electric and acoustic stories steeped in the blues and Americana.\n“We’re blue collar guys from working class families. We grew up on the sound of rock radio and the promise of an electric guitar.“ \nGrammy-nominated guitarist Jon Butcher is one of a select handful of influential recording artists who emerged from the legendary Boston music scene. Video\, eclectic radio releases and incendiary live performances comprise the underpinnings of a rich music career that continues today. \nAs a singer\, guitarist\, composer\, and bandleader (The Stompers)\, Sal Baglio has touched all the bases that round out a successful musical career. But with his recent work as a solo artist\, Baglio embarks upon a new path that looks backward in the most delightful way. Baglio’s music and solo performances dial up a past that is easily imagined in a less-distracted age where music bursts boldly out of a car’s AM radio on a summer drive or floats in the imagination of a young solitary artist learning to strum his first guitar. \nSongwriter Allen Estes grew up in a musical family\, the oldest son of professional musicians Estelle and Phil Estes in Gloucester MA and began playing at age six. Phil packed the family up in the car and literally took to the open road for musical adventures eventually leading to the forming of the Estes Boys\, Allen’s seminal band. The Estes Boys performed in and around New England and by the mid 80’s Allen moved to Nashville TN\, writing and working with Tammy Wynette\, Robert Ellis Oral\, Lori Morgan\, and Shania Twain.

SUMMARY:Celtic Duo Rakish at Harmony on the Green\, Lexington MA
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Maura Shawn Scanlin and guitarist Conor Hearn unite to form “Rakish.” The pair gets their namesake from the traditional Irish tune Rakish Paddy\, an origin that aptly suits the duo and their shared background in traditional Irish and Scottish music. Yet “rakish” itself also suggests something strikingly unconventional in its appearance\, and Maura and Conor knowingly embrace this wealth of connotation in their music\, drawing on the music they grew up with and performing it with their own slant. \nIn a performance that is something more akin to concert music\, Rakish explores tunes and songs from Irish and American folk traditions in a way that reflects their shared interest in and love for chamber and improvised music. Maura Shawn\, a two-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition\, wields the technical range of an accomplished classical violinist and the deep sensitivity of a traditional musician. Conor\, a native to the Irish music communities of Washington\, DC\, and Baltimore\, MD\, makes his home in Boston playing guitar for a number of traditional music acts and bands. \nRakish has performed on Front Row Boston\, Brian O’Donovan’s 2020 “A Christmas Celtic Sojourn\,” and the Burren Backroom Series\, and they can be heard on broadcasts of GBH’s “A Celtic Sojourn.” They have appeared at esteemed festivals including the Boston Celtic Music Festival\, the Bellingham Irish Music Festival\, and the Rockport Celtic Music Festival. Rakish is a recipient of the 2019 Iguana Fund Grant generously supported by Club Passim. \nOpening for Rakish will be Emmy nominated Celtic harpist Jenna Greene\, with vocalist Sairys Green.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Cliff Eberhardt - Saturday\, Sept. 21\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\n\n\nAcclaimed singer-songwriter Cliff Eberhardt opens the Rose Garden’s 36th season on Saturday\, September 21\, at 7:30 p.m.   \n“Cliff is a songwriter\, storyteller\, and guitarist who has a poet’s heart and a gravelly voice that just draws you in\,” said Stephen Ide\, artistic director of the Rose Garden Coffeehouse. “We’re thrilled to have him back to open the season.”  \nClose on the heels of recent performances on the “On A Winter’s Night” tour\, Eberhardt is working on a new collection\, “Found Objects\,” an album of covers featuring arrangements of the songs of Leon Russell\, Tom Waits\, Cole Porter and more.  \nEberhardt knew from a young age that his destiny was in music. Growing up in Pennsylvania\, he was surrounded by a family that cherished music\, with his father introducing him to the guitar. His early exposure to legendary artists like James Taylor\, Joni Mitchell\, and Bruce Springsteen at the Main Point folk club shaped his musical journey.  \nBy 15\, Cliff and his brother Geoff were touring as an acoustic duo\, and by 21\, Cliff had moved to Illinois\, where he honed his craft in a vibrant music scene. His journey took him to New York in 1978\, where he immersed himself in the city’s rich musical landscape\, performing at iconic venues\, collaborating with artists like John Gorka\, Suzanne Vega and others\, singing advertising jingles\, and even working as a taxi driver to help make ends meet.  \nHis career took off with his debut album\, “The Long Road” in 1990\, which featured a duet with Richie Havens. Over the years\, he has released several albums and his songwriting prowess has earned him a place among the most respected songwriters in the folk scene\, with his songs covered by artists like Richie Havens and Shawn Colvin.  \nCliff also has made significant contributions to theater\, composing and performing original songs for productions like Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” and “The Heal\,” a modern re-telling of the Sophocles play\, “Philoctetes.”   \nCliff’s latest album\, “Knew Things\,” reached #4 on the Folk Alliance International’s Folk Radio Chart.  \nThe Rose Garden shows will be start at 7:30 p.m.\, with doors opening at 7. SUMMARY:Miles and Mafale POSTPONED!
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Miles and Jay Mafale — husband and wife\, co-conspirators\, storytellers. They are two scoops of modern folk with a sprinkling of pop-catchiness\, topped off with the wit and flair that comes of their theater backgrounds. \n  \nCatherine’s voice is an expressive powerhouse. Jay’s guitar is distinctive and unconventional. They are known for the plainspoken poetry\, clever humor\, and unique perspectives of their songs. Miles & Mafale aim to shift points of view through themes of perseverance\, hope\, and strength of spirit. And yes\, sometimes they throw in a villain just for fun. \n  \nIt can be said that Catherine and Jay have experienced more than the usual share of ups and downs… but this\, along with their diverse influences and initial decade of performing cover songs (in their own group and as sidemen) gives them a tremendous “palette” to draw from. \nMiles & Mafale blend all of that together into their own candid and playful style. \nAudiences first came to know Catherine and Jay as a trio\, The YaYas\, with piano man Paul Silverman. More recent years found them touring the country with Karyn Oliver and Carolann Solebello as No Fuss and Feathers. \n  \nMiles & Mafale’s songwriting has earned them acclaim in venerable listening rooms and festivals nationwide\, along with recognition as Most Wanted Emerging Artists at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, three-time Kerrville New Folk finalists\, South Florida Folk Festival/Vic Heyman Award Finalists\, and Honorable Mentions in Mid-Atlantic and Braver Angels song contests. They have performed as official showcase artists at SWRFA\, SERFA\, NERFA\, and FARM. \n  \nThe duo’s latest release\, Be Brave\, is “Beautifully made. An articulate page-turner of an album that feels like a short story collection in 10 songs.” Marilyn Rea Beyer\, WFMT Chicago.

SUMMARY:Martha Burns House Concert
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 22\, 3pm ET (note early start time!)\nCambridge\, MA (address provided when you make your reservation)\nGeneral admission: $20 at the door ($5 for students)\nReservations required: email HouseConcerts@fssgb.org for reservations and directions. \nMartha grew up in Greenwich Village in the 1950s and sixties\, during the height of the Folk Revival. The New Lost City Ramblers and the Friends of Old-Time Music were first bringing the greats of early country music to national attention. Harry Smith’s pioneering Anthology of American Folk Music\, the first major re-issue of early folk music 78s\, came out the year she was born—the New Lost City Ramblers Songbook\, when Martha was twelve. Martha gained much of her education in folk music on Sunday afternoons in Washington Square Park. When Doc Watson played at the tiny Gaslight Café on Macdougal Street\, Martha was there—with her mother. \nMartha has since lived in many parts of the U.S.—Ann Arbor\, Seattle\, Philadelphia\, Boston\, Providence\, and on Capitol Hill in Washington\, DC\, where she’s presently based. Her first move was in 1970 to Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, where she went for college and stayed for a decade. Some of the songs on her 2014 album Old-Time Songs\, she first began singing at the Ark Coffeehouse\, then a celebrated hub for traditional music in the Midwest\, and her own musical home through those years. During that period\, she also played in the Argo Pond String Band. Others in the group included David Cahn and Bill Meyer\, now both prominent west-coast musicians\, and Craig Johnson\, later revered for songs like “New Harmony\,” that he wrote in Ann Arbor. \nShe began performing in the early 1970s\, first regionally and then nationally. By the mid-eighties\, she had played the Philadelphia Folk Festival\, Pinewoods Folk Music Camp\, and myriad folk clubs. In 1984 she completed a six-week British tour\, which included a memorable concert on the Island of Guernsey. \nIn 1985 she paired up with fiddler Allan Block\, now remembered for the Allan Block Sandal Shop in Greenwich Village\, where he hosted legendary jam sessions throughout the 1960s. When Allan and she began performing together\, she was living in Boston. Allan had since moved to New Hampshire and was a central figure in the New England folk music scene. Together Allan and she recorded an album on the Marimac label. Sadly\, the unexpected death of Marimac’s president prevented its release. \nAllan and she continued to play together through the early 1990s. Toward the end of that time\, she scaled back on performing for a two-decades-long foray into academia. her field was American history\, and she have published on subjects ranging from early American hymnody to female piano teachers before the Civil War. \nHer return to music was consummated in 2014 with the release of “Old-Time Songs”. Her first solo album\, it was funded through a highly successful Kickstarter campaign—Kickstarter made the project a “Staff Pick” and featured it on the Kickstarter Blog. You can preview or purchase Old-TIme Songs here.

SUMMARY:Hiroya Tsukamato
DESCRIPTION:All donations go directly to the musician \nTo register\, email houseconcertsnewton@gmail.com and then info will be sent to you. \nHiroya Tsukamoto – singer-songwriter and master guitarist whose unique voice and loop pedal will take us to beautiful places.\nCome join us for a fun house concert as Hiroya Tsukamoto takes us on an impressionistic journey with his one of a kind weavings of voice and guitar. “In his live performances\, Tsukamoto moves seamlessly through traditional guitar techniques and tonalities but is just as fluent with unusual and surprising textures and voicings. This is especially true when he uses his looping pedal\, where fluid melody will sit atop shimmering arpeggios punctuated by notes so staccato that they produce an effect like pitched percussion.”
