SUMMARY:Crys Matthews
DESCRIPTION:Weather permitting\, this concert will take place on the covered patio of the hosts’ home in Rockport\, Massachusetts. If the weather is horrid\, we will move indoors and capacity will be limited to 30. The suggested contribution is $20\, payable at the door by cash\, check\, or Venmo. Send email to whalecoveproductions@gmail.com to get more information or to request an invitation. \nAlready being hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie\,” Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster-child for intersectionality\,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” She is made for these times and\, with the release of her new\, hope-fueled\, love-filled social justice album Changemakers\, Matthews hopes to take her place alongside some of her heroes in the world of social-justice music like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Holly Near. Of Matthews\, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says\, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice\, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.”

SUMMARY:Iris Dement
DESCRIPTION:“Iris DeMent’s music goes from her heart into yours and stays there for life.” ~Jim Rooney \n“Iris DeMent makes music that celebrates humanity’s efforts toward salvation\, while acknowledging that most of our time on Earth is spent reconciling with the fact that we don’t feel so redeemed. Grounded in hymns\, early country songs\, gospel and folk\, DeMent’s work is treasured by those who know it for its insight and unabashed beauty.” ~  Ann Powers\, NPR \n“You can listen to most artists and tell who inspired them or where they tipped off from. There are very few artists that are so original that that is almost nonexistent. What I hear\, when I hear Iris\, is just a total original.” ~ Marty Stuart\, Music Hall of Fame performer and composer \n“Iris Dement’s songs sound like heaven and earth meeting within one woman’s searching sensibility.”~ Ann Powers\, NPR \n  \nBIO: \nOn her transcendent new record\, Workin’ On A World\, Iris DeMent faces the modern world — as it is right now — with its climate catastrophe\, pandemic illness\, and epidemic of violence and social injustice — and not only asks us how we can keep working towards a better world\, but implores us to love each other\, despite our very different ways of seeing. Her songs are her way of healing our broken inner and outer spaces. \nWith an inimitable voice as John Prine described\, “like you’ve heard\, but not really\,”  and unforgettable melodies rooted in hymns\, gospel\, and old country music\, she’s simply one of the finest singer-songwriters in America as well as one of our fiercest advocates for human rights. Her debut record Infamous Angel\, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary\, was recently named one of the “greatest country albums of all time” by Rolling Stone\, and the two albums that followed\, My Life and The Way I Should\, were both nominated for GRAMMYs. From there\, DeMent released three records on her own label\, Flariella Records\, the most recent of which\, The Trackless Woods (2015)\, was hailed as “a quietly powerful triumph” by The Guardian. DeMent’s songs have also been featured in film (True Grit) and television (The Leftovers) and recorded by numerous artists. Fittingly\, she received the Americana Music Trailblazer Award in 2017. \nWorkin’ On A World\, her seventh album\, started with the worry that woke DeMent up after the 2016 elections: how can we survive this?  “Every day some new trauma was being added to the old ones that kept repeating themselves\, and like everybody else\, I was just trying to bear up under it all\,” she recalls. She returned to a truth she had known since childhood: music is medicine. “My mom always had a way of finding the song that would prove equal to whatever situation we were facing. Throughout my life\, songs have been lending me a hand. Writing songs\, singing songs\, putting them on records\, has been a way for me to extend that hand to others.” \nWith grace\, courage\, and soul\, Iris shares 13 anthems — love songs\, really — to and for our broken inner and outer worlds. DeMent sets the stage for the album with the title track in which she moves from a sense of despair towards a place of promise. “Now I’m workin’ on a world I may never see / Joinin’ forces with the warriors of love / Who came before and will follow you and me.” \nShe summons various social justice warriors\, both past and present\, to deliver messages of optimism. “How Long” references Martin Luther King\, while “Warriors of Love” includes John Lewis and Rachel Corrie. “Goin’ Down To Sing in Texas” is an ode not only to gun control\, but also to the brave folks who speak out against tyranny and endure the consequences in an unjust world. “I kept hearing a lot of talk about the arc of history that Dr. King so famously said bends towards justice\,” she recalls. “I was having my doubts. But\, then it dawned on me\, he never said the arc would magically bend itself. Songs\, over the course of history\, have proven to be pretty good arc benders.” \nBending inward\, DeMent reaches agilely under the slippery surface of politics. She grapples with loss on the deeply honest “I Won’t Ask You Why\,” while encouraging compassion over hate in the awe-inspiring “Say A Good Word.”  Album closer “Waycross\, Georgia\,” encompasses the end of the journey\, thanking those along the way.  As she approaches subjects of aging\, loss\, suicide\, and service\, an arc of compassion elevated to something far beyond words is transmitted.  The delicate fierceness encompassed in the riveting power of her voice has somehow only grown over time. \nStalled partway through by the pandemic\, the record took six years to make with the help of three friends and co-producers: Richard Bennett\, Pieta Brown\, and Jim Rooney. It was Pieta Brown who gave the record its final push. “Pieta asked me what had come of the recordings I’d done with Jim and Richard in 2019 and 2020. I told her I’d pretty much given up on trying to make a record. She asked would I mind if she had a listen. So\, I had everything we’d done sent over to her\, and not long after that I got a text\, bouncing with exclamation marks: ‘You have a record and it’s called Workin’ On A World!’” With Bennett back in the studio with them\, Brown and DeMent recorded several more songs and put the final touches on the record in Nashville in April of 2022. \nThe result is a hopeful album — shimmering with brilliant flashes of poignant humor and uplifting tenderness — that speaks the truth\, “in the way that truth is always hopeful\,” she explains.  Reflecting on the lyrics of the song “The Sacred Now” (“see these walls/ let’s bring ‘em on down / it’s not a dream; it’s the sacred now”)\, DeMent is reminded of Jesus saying the Kingdom of God is within you and the Buddhist activist monk Thich Nhat Hanh saying the rose is in the compost; the compost is in the rose. On Workin’ On A World\, Iris DeMent demonstrates that songs are the healing and the healing arises through song. \nhttps://irisdement.com/about

SUMMARY:The Black Feathers
DESCRIPTION:Weather permitting\, this concert will take place on the covered patio of the hosts’ home in Rockport\, Massachusetts. Send email to whalecoveproductions@gmail.com to get more information or to request an invitation. \nThe ability to write songs that are both modern and ancient is a rare thing. The product of an arcane art of weaving in traditional influences so thoroughly that they become the warp and weft of fresh creations. The Black Feathers\, made up of Ray Hughes and Sian Chandler\, are two such talents. They first became aware of the magic between them while collaborating on several musical projects\, becoming The Black Feathers and life partners in 2012. \n\nAmericana\, Folk\, and Acoustic Indie Rock sensibilities coexist comfortably in their musical world\, with Hughes’ guitar work buoying the kind of harmonies often only heard in family bands. Their music quickly draw the interest of listeners\, but it is the stage chemistry that will keep them riveted. \nHaving already built up a loyal following in the UK\, The Black Feathers have been spreading their wings across the US. They have performed at Philadelphia Folk Festival and AmericanaFest\, and have also been awarded official showcases at the North East Regional and Far-West Folk Alliance conferences.

SUMMARY:Garnet Rogers
DESCRIPTION:This will be a very special evening with Garnet Rogers who played at the very special coffee house in Peterborough\, NH\, The Folkway\, in the mid 1970’s with his brother Stan. On August 2nd there will be a presentation at the Amos Fortune lecture series\, in Jaffrey\, NH about the impact The Folkway had on our region during it’s history from 1975 until 1996 when it sadly closed permanently for the 2nd time\, as well as the impact it has on the musicians and our region today. Garnet will be present at this presentation. Watch the papers for much more on that as it draws nearer. \n“Garnet Rogers is capable of awe-inspiring and unpredictable stuff – and that includes more than just music” \nResolutely independent\, Garnet Rogers has turned down offers from major labels to do his music his own way. \nIn a darkened bedroom\, lit only by the amber glow from an old floor model radio\, two young brothers aged 6 and 12 lay in their beds\, listening to the country music broadcasts from the Grand Ol’ Opry\, and practiced their harmonies. Two years later\, the youngest one was playing the definitive 8-year-old’s version of “Desolation Row” on his ukulele. He soon abandoned that instrument to teach himself the flute\, violin and guitar. \nWithin ten years\, and barely out of high school\, Garnet Rogers was on the road as a full-time working musician with his older brother Stan. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential acts in North American folk music. \nSince then\, Garnet Rogers has established himself as ‘One of the major talents of our time”. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”\, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth\, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range\, and thoughtful\, dramatic phrasing\, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music\, like the man himself\, is literate\, passionate\, highly sensitive\, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail\, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart\, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs\, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again. \nmuch more https://garnetrogers.com/

He performs regularly all over the country\, presenting a unique variety of original instrumental music that explores themes of landscape\, geography\, and environment while straddling a line between folk and classical music. “Like a sonic plein-air painter\,” wrote the Boston Globe\, “[Cosgrove] uses his piano as a paintbrush — and he’s made a name for himself doing it.” His “electric and exhilarating” solo piano performances are at once dazzling and intimate: music that has been described as “stunning” and “compelling and powerful\,” — Red Line Roots has called him “stupidly talented” — all presented with “warmth\, humor\, honesty\, and the easy familiarity of a troubadour.”

SUMMARY:Eileen Ivers
DESCRIPTION:All non-refunded ticket holders – Your tickets will be good for this new date. If this date does not work for you\, you can request a reimbursement. Please email your request to pfmsconcerts@gmail.com .  \nPlease spread the word and let’s pack the theater for Eileen Ivers. \n… \nShe’s been called a “sensation” by Billboard magazine and “the Jimi Hendrix of the violin\,” by The New York Times. “She electrifies the crowd with a dazzling show of virtuoso playing” says The Irish Times \nEileen and her full ensemble will rock the Park Theatre in Jaffrey on Saturday night.  They have headlined prestigious performing arts centers\, and numerous symphonies\, performed at major festivals worldwide\, and have appeared on national and international television. The L.A. Times proclaims\, “Ivers’ presentation was music with the kind of life and spirit that come together when talented artists from different backgrounds find the linkages that connect all forms of music…no wonder the audience loved every minute.” \n“Not everything in life is beautiful\, but there sure is beauty in life. To seek it\, embrace it\, and let it shine embodies a good life. Scatter the light…” EILEEN \nIt is a rare and select grade of spectacular artists whose work is so boldly imaginative and clearly virtuosic that it alters the medium. It has been said that the task of respectfully exploring the traditions and progression of the Celtic fiddle is quite literally on Eileen Ivers’ shoulders. The Washington Post states\, “She suggests the future of the Celtic fiddle.” \nIvers’ recording credits include over 80 contemporary and traditional albums and numerous movie scores. Eileen is hailed as one of the great innovators and pioneers in the Celtic and World music genres. \nGrammy awarded\, Emmy nominated\, London Symphony Orchestra\, Boston Pops\, guest starred with over 50 orchestras\, original Musical Star of Riverdance\, Nine Time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion\, Sting\, Hall and Oates\, The Chieftains\, ‘Fiddlers 3’ with Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and Regina Carter\, Patti Smith\, Al Di Meola\, Steve Gadd\, founding member of Cherish the Ladies\, movie soundtracks including “Gangs of New York”\, performed for Presidents and Royalty worldwide…this is a short list of accomplishments\, headliners\, tours\, and affiliations. Fiddler Eileen Ivers has established herself as the pre-eminent exponent of the Irish fiddle in the world today. \nThe daughter of Irish immigrants\, Eileen Ivers grew up in the culturally diverse neighborhood of the Bronx\, New York. Rooted in Irish traditional music since the age of eight\, Eileen proceeded to win nine All-Ireland fiddle championships\, a tenth on tenor banjo and over 30 championship medals\, making her one of the most awarded persons ever to compete in these prestigious competitions. \nBeing an Irish-American\, the intrigue of learning more about the multicultural sounds of her childhood took hold. After graduating magna cum laude in Mathematics from Iona College and while continuing her post-graduate work in Mathematics\, Eileen fully immersed herself in the different genres of music which she experienced growing up in New York. With “unIVERSal roots”\, her energetic\, joyous\, passionate band\, Eileen continues to connect music\, cultures\, stories\, and emotions that tie us together. In 2019\, Iona College conferred upon Eileen Ivers the degree of Doctor of Arts\, honoris causa for her “lifelong commitment to innovation\, excellence and deep dedication to bringing people together through music.” \n  \n  \nhttps://www.eileenivers.com/about \n

SUMMARY:Martin and Eliza Carthy
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 23\, 2024\, 7pm ET \nFirst Parish of Sudbury\, 327 Concord Rd\, Sudbury\, MA (handicap accessible)\nAdmission: \n\nGeneral admission: $25\nStudents: $10\n17 and under free\n\nFor more than 50 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s greatest innovators\, one of its best loved\, most enthusiastic and\, at times\, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill\, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers\, not only from within the folk scene\, but also far beyond it. Trailblazing musical partnerships with\, amongst others\, Steeleye Span\, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums\, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums\, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels (Topic TSCD527) was the latest. Whether in the folk clubs (which he continues to champion)\, on the concert stage or making TV appearances (he was the subject of the acclaimed Originals music documentary strand on BBC 2) – there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn’t played. \nEliza Carthy is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and engaging performers of her generation. Twice nominated for the Mercury Prize and winner of innumerable other accolades over a 20 year career\, Eliza has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists including\, Paul Weller\, Rufus and Martha Wainwright\, Patrick Wolf and Bob Neuwirth. More than most\, Eliza Carthy has revitalised folk music and captured the most hardened of dissenters with intelligent\, charismatic and boundary-crossing performance. \nFSSGB is honored to be able to bring you this concert\, which Martin and Eliza are fitting in before they head off to be on staff at TradMaD Camp in Plymouth\, MA.

Added to this is the melodic sophistication of a Jimmy Webb or a Paul Simon\, as well as a spare but telling lyric approach. “I admire songwriters like Woody Guthrie and poets like Robert Frost because they created functional art\,” he says. “Too much music today is just for the singer\, not for Everyman. I think of my work as a ‘Please Touch’ museum – I want my songs to be sung until they’re worn out.”

SUMMARY:Crys Matthews
DESCRIPTION:“A passionate and powerful blend of infectious Americana melodies and folky instrumentation\, Matthews delivers her honest songwriting through a beautifully raw and unfiltered lens. Oozing soul\, her voice bleeds with emotion and gratitude\, while simple piano melodies and upbeat percussion fill you with appreciation and love for the people around us who fight for change.” — Ear Milk \n  \nAlready being hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie\,” Nashville resident Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster child for intersectionality\,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” She is made for these times and\, with the release of her new\, hope-fueled\, love-filled social justice album Changemakers\, MaNhews hopes to take her place alongside some of her heroes in the world of social-justice music like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Holly Near. Of MaNhews\, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says\, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice\, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.” \nMatthews began performing in 2010 but cemented her acclaim at Lincoln Center as the 2017 NewSong Music and Performance Competition grand prize winner. That year she also released two new projects\n— her album of thoughtful songs on love and life called The lmagineers\, and her EP called Battle Hymn for an Army of Lovers\, which tackles social justice themes. MaNhews also won the People‘s Music Network’s Social Justice Songs contest at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. Loyal fans quickly followed as Matthews racked up performances at large music festivals and prestigious venues across the country including the Sundance Film Festival\, Eerrville Folk Festival\, and locally at venues like The Birchmere\, The Hamilton\, Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center\, and Jammin’ Java. In her TedTalk about difficult conversations called “Sing\, Don’t Shout — An Alternative Approach” Matthews spoke about being born and raised in a small town in southeastern North Carolina by an A.M.E. preacher\, and how she witnessed the power of music from an early age. A former drum major and classically trained clarinetist turned folk singer\, Matthews is using her voice to answer Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to be “a drum major for justice.” \n“I believe in hope\,” Matthews said. “As a social-justice songwriter\, it is my duty to keep breathing that hope and encouragement into the people who listen to my music.” And\, from the title track to the last track\, Changemakers does just that all while tackling some heavy topics like immigration\, the opioid crisis\, Black Lives Matter\, and gun safety to name a few. “Ani DiFranco said\, “People used to make records as in a record of an event\,”” said Matthews\, “so I hope that these songs will serve as a time capsule\, a record of the events of the last four years and what it was like to live through them.” Crys Matthews’s thoughtful\, realistic\, and emotional songs speak to the voice of our generation and remind us why music indeed soothes the soul. \nhttns://www.crvsmatthews.com/

Man\, oh man\, can that guy play guitar! He completely overshadowed more well-known performers…They were wonderful\, but Jack Williams was playing in an entirely different league. SUMMARY:Butcher\, Baglio\, and Estes
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for those age 18 and under. Visit oldslooppresents.org\, John Tarr Store in Rockport\, or The Bookstore of Gloucester. The suggested contribution at the door is $25 for adults\, $5 for those age 18 and under\, and $50 for families. \nTickets and more information\nButcher\, Baglio\, and Estes is Jon Butcher\, Sal Baglio\, & Allen Estes. Three veteran musicians and familiar names from the Boston music scene. Their debut album\, GYPSY CARAVAN is 11 new electric and acoustic stories steeped in the blues and Americana.\n“We’re blue collar guys from working class families. We grew up on the sound of rock radio and the promise of an electric guitar.“ \nGrammy-nominated guitarist Jon Butcher is one of a select handful of influential recording artists who emerged from the legendary Boston music scene. Video\, eclectic radio releases and incendiary live performances comprise the underpinnings of a rich music career that continues today. \nAs a singer\, guitarist\, composer\, and bandleader (The Stompers)\, Sal Baglio has touched all the bases that round out a successful musical career. But with his recent work as a solo artist\, Baglio embarks upon a new path that looks backward in the most delightful way. Baglio’s music and solo performances dial up a past that is easily imagined in a less-distracted age where music bursts boldly out of a car’s AM radio on a summer drive or floats in the imagination of a young solitary artist learning to strum his first guitar. \nSongwriter Allen Estes grew up in a musical family\, the oldest son of professional musicians Estelle and Phil Estes in Gloucester MA and began playing at age six. Phil packed the family up in the car and literally took to the open road for musical adventures eventually leading to the forming of the Estes Boys\, Allen’s seminal band. The Estes Boys performed in and around New England and by the mid 80’s Allen moved to Nashville TN\, writing and working with Tammy Wynette\, Robert Ellis Oral\, Lori Morgan\, and Shania Twain.

SUMMARY:Celtic Duo Rakish at Harmony on the Green\, Lexington MA
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Maura Shawn Scanlin and guitarist Conor Hearn unite to form “Rakish.” The pair gets their namesake from the traditional Irish tune Rakish Paddy\, an origin that aptly suits the duo and their shared background in traditional Irish and Scottish music. Yet “rakish” itself also suggests something strikingly unconventional in its appearance\, and Maura and Conor knowingly embrace this wealth of connotation in their music\, drawing on the music they grew up with and performing it with their own slant. \nIn a performance that is something more akin to concert music\, Rakish explores tunes and songs from Irish and American folk traditions in a way that reflects their shared interest in and love for chamber and improvised music. Maura Shawn\, a two-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition\, wields the technical range of an accomplished classical violinist and the deep sensitivity of a traditional musician. Conor\, a native to the Irish music communities of Washington\, DC\, and Baltimore\, MD\, makes his home in Boston playing guitar for a number of traditional music acts and bands. \nRakish has performed on Front Row Boston\, Brian O’Donovan’s 2020 “A Christmas Celtic Sojourn\,” and the Burren Backroom Series\, and they can be heard on broadcasts of GBH’s “A Celtic Sojourn.” They have appeared at esteemed festivals including the Boston Celtic Music Festival\, the Bellingham Irish Music Festival\, and the Rockport Celtic Music Festival. Rakish is a recipient of the 2019 Iguana Fund Grant generously supported by Club Passim. \nOpening for Rakish will be Emmy nominated Celtic harpist Jenna Greene\, with vocalist Sairys Green.
