SUMMARY:North Reading Community Coffeehouse September Showcase
DESCRIPTION:After completing our wonderful outdoor Summer Concert Series at Ipswich River Park\, we move back indoors with the North Reading Community Coffeehouse proud to present its September Showcase.  This one is a little different than most in that we are featuring two terrific acts. They are Michelle Abadia who is a multifaceted and multilingual performing artist\, soprano; from classical to jazz\, from musical theater to Latino ballads; George Gershwin and Cole Porter. We are also featuring Michael Cataldo and Scotty Ray Clark\, an outstanding acoustic duo playing Classic Soul and R&B  (Sam Cooke\, Ray Charles\, Etta James) as well as stellar original songs.  Each performer will do about a 70 minute set. The event is free but donations will be gratefully accepted and we will be offering refreshments with all the proceeds going to the Friends of the Flint Memorial Library in North Reading with whom we will be doing these concerts in conjunction with\, to help support the library.  We are located in the Activity Room of the Flint Memorial Library at 147 Park Street in North Reading.  There is plenty of free parking.  We start at 6:30.  Please come\, sit back\, relax and listen to some terrific music!  If you have any questions\, please contact Art Grossman at NRCoffeehouse@gmail.com.\n\n

SUMMARY:Celtic Duo Rakish at Harmony on the Green\, Lexington MA
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Maura Shawn Scanlin and guitarist Conor Hearn unite to form “Rakish.” The pair gets their namesake from the traditional Irish tune Rakish Paddy\, an origin that aptly suits the duo and their shared background in traditional Irish and Scottish music. Yet “rakish” itself also suggests something strikingly unconventional in its appearance\, and Maura and Conor knowingly embrace this wealth of connotation in their music\, drawing on the music they grew up with and performing it with their own slant. \nIn a performance that is something more akin to concert music\, Rakish explores tunes and songs from Irish and American folk traditions in a way that reflects their shared interest in and love for chamber and improvised music. Maura Shawn\, a two-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition\, wields the technical range of an accomplished classical violinist and the deep sensitivity of a traditional musician. Conor\, a native to the Irish music communities of Washington\, DC\, and Baltimore\, MD\, makes his home in Boston playing guitar for a number of traditional music acts and bands. \nRakish has performed on Front Row Boston\, Brian O’Donovan’s 2020 “A Christmas Celtic Sojourn\,” and the Burren Backroom Series\, and they can be heard on broadcasts of GBH’s “A Celtic Sojourn.” They have appeared at esteemed festivals including the Boston Celtic Music Festival\, the Bellingham Irish Music Festival\, and the Rockport Celtic Music Festival. Rakish is a recipient of the 2019 Iguana Fund Grant generously supported by Club Passim. \nOpening for Rakish will be Emmy nominated Celtic harpist Jenna Greene\, with vocalist Sairys Green.

DESCRIPTION:Showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\n\n\nAcclaimed singer-songwriter Cliff Eberhardt opens the Rose Garden’s 36th season on Saturday\, September 21\, at 7:30 p.m.   \n“Cliff is a songwriter\, storyteller\, and guitarist who has a poet’s heart and a gravelly voice that just draws you in\,” said Stephen Ide\, artistic director of the Rose Garden Coffeehouse. “We’re thrilled to have him back to open the season.”  \nClose on the heels of recent performances on the “On A Winter’s Night” tour\, Eberhardt is working on a new collection\, “Found Objects\,” an album of covers featuring arrangements of the songs of Leon Russell\, Tom Waits\, Cole Porter and more.  \nEberhardt knew from a young age that his destiny was in music. Growing up in Pennsylvania\, he was surrounded by a family that cherished music\, with his father introducing him to the guitar. His early exposure to legendary artists like James Taylor\, Joni Mitchell\, and Bruce Springsteen at the Main Point folk club shaped his musical journey.  \nBy 15\, Cliff and his brother Geoff were touring as an acoustic duo\, and by 21\, Cliff had moved to Illinois\, where he honed his craft in a vibrant music scene. His journey took him to New York in 1978\, where he immersed himself in the city’s rich musical landscape\, performing at iconic venues\, collaborating with artists like John Gorka\, Suzanne Vega and others\, singing advertising jingles\, and even working as a taxi driver to help make ends meet.  \nHis career took off with his debut album\, “The Long Road” in 1990\, which featured a duet with Richie Havens. Over the years\, he has released several albums and his songwriting prowess has earned him a place among the most respected songwriters in the folk scene\, with his songs covered by artists like Richie Havens and Shawn Colvin.  \nCliff also has made significant contributions to theater\, composing and performing original songs for productions like Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” and “The Heal\,” a modern re-telling of the Sophocles play\, “Philoctetes.”   \nCliff’s latest album\, “Knew Things\,” reached #4 on the Folk Alliance International’s Folk Radio Chart.  \nThe Rose Garden shows will be start at 7:30 p.m.\, with doors opening at 7. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 22\, 3pm ET (note early start time!)\nCambridge\, MA (address provided when you make your reservation)\nGeneral admission: $20 at the door ($5 for students)\nReservations required: email HouseConcerts@fssgb.org for reservations and directions. \nMartha grew up in Greenwich Village in the 1950s and sixties\, during the height of the Folk Revival. The New Lost City Ramblers and the Friends of Old-Time Music were first bringing the greats of early country music to national attention. Harry Smith’s pioneering Anthology of American Folk Music\, the first major re-issue of early folk music 78s\, came out the year she was born—the New Lost City Ramblers Songbook\, when Martha was twelve. Martha gained much of her education in folk music on Sunday afternoons in Washington Square Park. When Doc Watson played at the tiny Gaslight Café on Macdougal Street\, Martha was there—with her mother. \nMartha has since lived in many parts of the U.S.—Ann Arbor\, Seattle\, Philadelphia\, Boston\, Providence\, and on Capitol Hill in Washington\, DC\, where she’s presently based. Her first move was in 1970 to Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, where she went for college and stayed for a decade. Some of the songs on her 2014 album Old-Time Songs\, she first began singing at the Ark Coffeehouse\, then a celebrated hub for traditional music in the Midwest\, and her own musical home through those years. During that period\, she also played in the Argo Pond String Band. Others in the group included David Cahn and Bill Meyer\, now both prominent west-coast musicians\, and Craig Johnson\, later revered for songs like “New Harmony\,” that he wrote in Ann Arbor. \nShe began performing in the early 1970s\, first regionally and then nationally. By the mid-eighties\, she had played the Philadelphia Folk Festival\, Pinewoods Folk Music Camp\, and myriad folk clubs. In 1984 she completed a six-week British tour\, which included a memorable concert on the Island of Guernsey. \nIn 1985 she paired up with fiddler Allan Block\, now remembered for the Allan Block Sandal Shop in Greenwich Village\, where he hosted legendary jam sessions throughout the 1960s. When Allan and she began performing together\, she was living in Boston. Allan had since moved to New Hampshire and was a central figure in the New England folk music scene. Together Allan and she recorded an album on the Marimac label. Sadly\, the unexpected death of Marimac’s president prevented its release. \nAllan and she continued to play together through the early 1990s. Toward the end of that time\, she scaled back on performing for a two-decades-long foray into academia. her field was American history\, and she have published on subjects ranging from early American hymnody to female piano teachers before the Civil War. \nHer return to music was consummated in 2014 with the release of “Old-Time Songs”. Her first solo album\, it was funded through a highly successful Kickstarter campaign—Kickstarter made the project a “Staff Pick” and featured it on the Kickstarter Blog. In 2014 she set out to overcome that stage fright and wrote her first song. Kim teamed with Grammy nominated producer Jon Evans to record three albums\, all receiving critical acclaim and charting on the Folk Alliance International DJ charts. Her latest release “The Seven Fires Prophecy Suite for Humanity” (2023) is an original 8 song suite that tells the ancient yet relevant Anishinaabe legend “The Seven Fires Prophecy”. Her newest project “All That Really Matters” will be released in early 2025. DESCRIPTION:PETE AND MAURA KENNEDY back at  LINDEN TREE CONCERTS                            Saturday\, October 5\, 2024 \nThe Linden Tree Concert series is excited to bring back Pete and Maura Kennedy to Wakefield on Saturday\,October 5 at 7:30 pm.  Often seen on festival stages around the country\, their visits to coffeehouses are extra special.  The Kennedys are an American folk-rock band recognized for their harmonies and instrumental prowess\, blending elements of country music\, bluegrass\, Western swing and janglepop. \nThe Kennedys began performing together in 1992\, shortly after they met while on the road with Nanci Griffith. The pair’s musical influences are quite eclectic from Buddy Holly\, the Everly Brothers\, the Beatles\, and the Byrds\, but also jazz\, blues\, and world music.  With over 14 recordings as the Kennedys and many recorded individually and with others\, Pete and Maura have no plans to slow down either on tour or in creating music. \nTheir latest recording Headwinds\, their title track\, shows their love of the United States. Political and social headwinds are making it hard to get back home to our greatness as a nation. The duo want to push back in a positive way against those winds. DESCRIPTION:Antje Duvekit first appeared on our radar back in the early 2000s. Continuing the Stone Soup tradition of supporting up-and-coming artists\, we asked Antje to open for Ellis Paul at one of our shows. Nowl\, we are thrilled to welcome Antje back to perform at the Music Mansion for the first time on October 12\, 2024.  Opening for Antje will be Erin Ash Sullivan. We are located at 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906. Tickets are $25\, and are available at the door or with reservation through our website. All tickets must be purchased at the time of the reservation. We accept VENMO. \nParking at The Music Mansion at 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906 is limited and carpooling\, ride-sharing\, and mass transit are highly encouraged. There is also available parking on Benefit Street\, a short set of stairs will lead you right up to the Music Mansion.  \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nAntje Duvekot has solidified her reputation as one of Boston’s top singer songwriters with “Big Dream Boulevard” her debut studio release and “the Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer” and “New Siberia” her follow-up albums. The debut CD was produced by Seamus Egan\, founder of the Irish super group\, SOLAS and the project was released on songwriter Ellis Paul’s label and quickly attracted international attention for Antje. It was voted “#1 Folk Release of 2006” by the Boston Globe and was named to the “Top10 Releases of the Year” by National Public Radio’s\, Folk Alley. Her follow up albums “the Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer” and “New Siberia” were produced by Richard Shindell and along side with Richard feature other “folk royalty” such as John Gorka\, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli. \nRichard Shindell said “What a blessing to have worked with someone as talented as Antje. With a voice like hers\, and songs as good as these\, a producer (especially a first-time producer!) just tries to get out of the way\, to do no harm\, and to let the artist speak for herself.” The Boston Globe said\,  “Duvekot has gotten hotter\, faster than any local songwriter in recent memory. Her songs feel at once fresh faced and firmly rooted\, driven by the whispery sensuality of her voice” \nAntje has won some of the top songwriting awards including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and in one of the nation’s top music markets\, she won the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined the The Celtic Connections Festival in Scotland and the Tonder Festival in Denmark. \nOpening for Antje Duvekot will be Erin Ash Sullivan\, a Massachusetts-based singer-songwriter who considers herself a New Englander even though her family did not move to this area until she was in middle school. She has won numerous songwriting awards\, including the Rose Garden Coffeehouse Performing Songwriter Competition\, the Mark Erelli Judge’s Choice Award in the New England Songwriting Competition\, the Great American Song Contest (finalist) and the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest (finalist).

SUMMARY:North Reading Community Coffeehouse October Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present its October Showcase. This one is a little different than most in that we are doing it on a Friday and we are welcoming two first time performers\, Tom Cook and Glen Gardner who is coming to North Reading from Phoenix. The other performers are Mary Ann McAllister who is returning to the NRCC from Maryland\, another NRCC veteran\, Tom Maynard and Art Grossman. Each performer will do about a 30 minute set.The event is free but donations will be gratefully accepted and we will be offering refreshments with all the proceeds going to the Friends of the Flint Memorial Library in North Reading with whom we will be doing these concerts in conjunction with\, to help support the library.\nThe event will also be livestreamed on the North Reading Community Coffeehouse Facebook page and on the YouTube channel the following day! \nWe are located in the Activity Room of the Flint Memorial Library at 147 Park Street in North Reading.  There is plenty of free parking.  We start at 6:30.  Please come\, sit back\, relax and listen to some terrific music!  If you have any questions\, please contact Art Grossman at NRCoffeehouse@gmail.com.\n\n\n\n
