SUMMARY:Ellis Paul with Radoslav Lorkovic
DESCRIPTION:Paul is a four-piece band wrapped into one: He expertly mimics the sound of a drum set with his guitar while simultaneously creating enticing chord progressions\, he sings and blows his harmonica at the same time. – Nina Matti \n“Despite his success and sense of history\, Mr. Paul remains an artist with his eye on the future and an interest in discovering the transformative potential in his music.” – The New York Times \n  \nEllis Paul \nSome artists document their lives through their music. Others chronicle their times. It’s a rare artist who can do both\, telling their own story through songs that also encapsulate the essence of people and places who have helped define their era overall. Woody Guthrie\, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen all come to mind. Yet few songwriters can relate their own life to the life experienced by others who find that common bond — the exhilaration of the open road\, the celebration of heroes\, the coming of age\, the hope for redemption\, the sharing of love\, intimate\, passionate and enduring — the way that Ellis Paul does.\nSmart. Literate. Poetic. Singular. Storyteller. Folksinger. \nYes\, but Ellis Paul is far more. How much more? An incredible 30-year career. 15 Boston Music Awards. 20 albums. Newport Folk Festival. Carnegie Hall. Hundreds of venues from Alaska to Miami\, Paris\, and London. Dozens of compilations\, commercials\, documentaries\, TV shows\, and blockbuster movie soundtracks. He is one of the finest singer/songwriters of his generation — for many\, the face of contemporary folk music — and probably no artist on the acoustic music scene is better loved by fans\, or more respected by his contemporaries than Ellis Paul. \nRadoslav Lorkovic \nDrawing from a multitude of influences ranging from elegant classical and jazz styles to the rawest\, most basic blues\, country and soul\, Radoslav Lorković has taken on an unusually broad musical spectrum and refined it into his distinctive piano style. Born in Zagreb\, Croatia  Radoslav moved to the United States at age six. He had a foothold on a classical music career when at age fourteen he was sidetracked by a blues scale that a friend had taught him. Lorković currently tours the world regularly appearing at prestigious events such as the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival\, WOMAD\, Winnipeg\, Calgary\, Edmonton and Ottawa folk festivals\, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, Mountain Stage\, Prairie Home Companion\, eTown as well as a litany of Italian castles and villas.

SUMMARY:Les Sampou and Kerri Powers at The Linden Tree
DESCRIPTION:Linden Tree Concerts present: \nLes Sampou and Kerri Powers\, strong original songs\, \nbluesy with a lot of soul\, bits of jazz and folk rock and roll. \nSaturday\, January 11th at 7:30 pm\, $25 (under 18 $10) \nLinden Tree concerts continues into 2025 with encore performances with two of our favorite women singer-songwriters Les Sampou and Kerri Powers. Both sets will feature a lot of blues with bits of jazz and rock & roll.  This year’s concerts are held at the Wakefield Lynnfield Methodist Church on Vernon St. Our regulars cite the friendliness\, affordability\, and exceptional national talent presented each month. \nLes Sampou is an Americana singer-songwriter\, who got her start in the Boston folk scene and moved on to national prominence and acclaim. Sampou has performed at Montreal Jazz Festival\, SXSW\, Toronto Blues Festival\, Kerrville Folk Festival (where she won the New Folk Songwriting Award)\, Philadelphia Folk Festival\, Winnipeg\, and Falcon Ridge to name a few. Sampou has conducted workshops at Berklee School of Music and appeared on top syndicated radio programs such as Acoustic Cafe\, World Cafe\, and NPR. Sampou has released seven albums\, five on her own label and two on Rounder Records. Her album\, “Fall from Grace”\, topped the Gavin Americana Charts nationwide. Her release “Lonesomeville” charted number 2 on the US/European Americana F.A.R. Chartsand led to her performance at the SXSW Conference in Austin\, TX. To date\, Sampou has released seven albums of original material (See Sales on Menu). In 2021\, Les won the 26th Annual International Songwriters Award for lyric writing for her song “LIES FROM TRUTH.” \nSampou\, who lives on the South Shore of Boston\, began playing in the streets in what she terms as “relatively late in life\,” at twenty five..After cutting her teeth in the streets\, Les began playing area clubs\, before Sampou found the coffeehouse scene. Her first album “SWEET PERFUME” caught the attention of legendary DJ Dick Pleasants and it soon was on the doorstep of Rounder Records where she was immediately signed. Rounder released “Fall From Grace” and it hit the top of the charts of Gavin Americana Radio. Sampou’s third disc\, the eponymously-titled album “LES SAMPOU\,” was a departure from her folk and blues sound and her penchant for rock began to color her voice and her writing. \nWhen Sampou and Rounder parted ways\, Les released her first all-acoustic\, country-blues album\, ‘BORROWED & BLUE’” on her own label\, MoNando Music. Always side-stepping categorization\, this time Sampou put out a collection of the guitar-based country-blues—original and classics—tunes that were a staple in Les’s live shows. \nBut\, it wasn’t until her album ‘LONESOMEVILLE\,’ that Sampou feels like she “hit her stride.”recorded Lonesomeville live in two days with Ducky Carlisle\, mix engineer\, added his acclaimed rock edge to the Americana set of blues and soul-tinged country tunes..“Powerfully expressive\, her new album\, “Lonesomeville\,” was a personal Top Ten favorite of the year.” STEVE MORSE\, BOSTON GLOBE/ ROLLING STONE“’Lonesomeville’ evokes a Tom Waits-like world.” SING OUT  Many more songs to come\, \n Les dedicating another  album to the singer-songwriter coffeehouse scene for its support of acoustic musicians. The national coffeehouse scene for decades has presented acoustic concerts in the halls of churches run by volunteers. “I dedicate this album to every promoter and volunteer\, and to the audiences who find their way to “the church of music. Ours is a lucky community and I’m blessed to have been taken into its fold all these years.” says Sampou. \nSampou’s seventh and most recent project “LIKE YOUR VIBE” is the result of the last few years of collaborations with select musicians worldwide. In order to build her catalog of TV/FILM-ready songs\, Sampou and her collaborators created cross genre songs from “1969” co-written with Andre Lund from Norway\, an indie rock song about the 1960’s counter culture\, to the dark\, vampire-themed song “Dreadful Love” co-written with Israeli Roy Osherove to “Boy Blue” a country rock ballad co-written with Axel Bauer from Austria. After accumulating twenty plus collaborations\, Sampou and her partner Ed Grenga placed many of the songs on TV and Film. \n Singer-songwriter Kerri Powers channels blues and soul with an eye-to-eye\, earthy sensibility that makes for honest listening and reflection. She’s your sage girlfriend speaking from the heart and does so with a new collection of songs written from a place of grief and longing – something that speaks to us all. She’s one of the finest country blues fingerstyle guitar we’ve had on our stage. “Powers’ exceptional vocals are matched with outstanding songwriting. A lifetime of creativity infuse her original songs with mournful\, redemptive catharsis. \nWith ‘Love is Why\,’ Powers’ first self-penned full-length album since 2018\, the New England-based artist explores the universal emotion of love and its huge influence on our decisions. In particular\, she examines love in the context of holding on or letting go through human loss and grieving. The album’s original songs were written during the pandemic and after Powers lost her father\, whom she calls “my best friend.” \nRecorded in 2021\, Kerri says\, “I wrote the songs from a place of loss and grieving and went from there.” “Writing the songs was hard but a necessary part of healing. At the end of the day\, all the songs were written from a place of love for humanity and the need to spread the message that love is essential.” \nKerri’s critically acclaimed album “Love is Why” has been praised by notable music journalists Lee Zimmerman\, John Apice\, Bucky O’Hare\, and more and has been reviewed for Americana Highways\, No Depression\, Blues Blast Magazine\, as well as landing on several ‘Top Albums of 2023’ lists for non-comm and Americana and Blues radio. “When it Rains” stayed at the #1 spot on the Roots Radio Rock Music Charts for several weeks. \n“I don’t know where this young lady came from\, but it’s got to be a secret place. This is not the kind of singing and performing that can be easily taught. It has to be in your spirit\, in your blood\, and the fact that she is from the Northeast will confound the artists down South\, in the Delta\, in Memphis\, Clarksdale\, Austin\, and Nashville.” John Apice/No Depression \nTickets for this concert are $25. Homemade baked goods and beverages hot and cold are sold before the show and during intermission. Doors open at 7 with the show beginning at 7:30pm. For preferential seating call 781 246 2836 by noon on performance days. \nLinden Tree concerts are now held at the Wakefield Lynnfield United Methodist Church at 273 Vernon St.  Wakefield\, MA 01880 Easy to find from 95.  Parking Lot by church rear entrance.  Handicapped access too. For more information www.LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for those age 18 and under. Visit oldslooppresents.org\, John Tarr Store in Rockport\, or The Bookstore of Gloucester. The suggested contribution at the door is $25 for adults\, $5 for those age 18 and under\, and $50 for families. \nTickets and more information\nAllison Lupton’s original songs fit so perfectly into the cannon of Canadian folk music that they could easily be mistaken for traditional numbers. Along with a brilliant lineup of musicians\, Lupton brings to life the best of the contemporary folk music scene in Ontario\, while incorporating the Celtic influences that have been such an important part of the Canadian immigrant story as well as her own musical path. Allison will be joined for this concert by Canadian and US National fiddle champion and multi-instrumentalist Shane Cook and guitarist and Canadian Open Step Dance Champion Kyle Waymouth. \nBorn in San Francisco to musician parents\, Liz Simmons spent her early childhood traveling through the wilds of north America in a sky blue VW bus. Her parents were itinerant\, moving from California to Oregon\, then to Ketchikan\, Alaska. In 2005\, Liz received a BA from Goddard College where she studied American vernacular music of the 1920s and 30s. She then went on to found Annalivia and then Low Lily with Flynn Cohen\, as well as perform alongside Long Time Courting\, Hannah Sanders\, EVA\, Livingston Taylor\, Tom Chapin\, and others. 2021 saw the release of “Poets”\, her first solo album in fifteen years\, which has been lauded as “an ageless album” (Irish Music Magazine)\, “more than the sum of its considerable parts” (RNR Magazine)\, and “pure poetry indeed” (Goldmine Magazine).

SUMMARY:Kemp Harris hosts "We Shall Overcome: Songs of Hope\, Struggle & Action"
DESCRIPTION:Singer\, songwriter\, activist\, and storyteller Kemp Harris returns to the Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse Series in Lexington for a special show on Saturday\, January 25th. The evening\, titled “We Shall Overcome: Songs of Hope\, Struggle\, and Action” will include a wide range of music\, focusing on songs that everyone can participate in as we face the next era in our country’s story. Proceeds from the show will benefit the LGBQ Asylum Task Force in Worcester. \n“As we enter the time of this next Presidential administration\, I felt\, and was hearing of\, people’s needs to come together to find community and express their feelings in song\,” says Harmony’s coordinator Mark Morgan. “We want to create a space and event in which people can support one another\, express their hopes and fears\, and find solidarity in this fractured time. We also wanted the whole thing to be done for a good cause–a gesture of support for those most vulnerable who will likely be disproportionately adversely affected by the changes to come.” LGBT Asylum Task Force supports members of the LGBTQ community who have had to flee their home countries\, frequently to protect their own lives. The Task Force assists them through the asylum process and in getting work authorization so that they can support themselves. \nKemp Harris is a force of nature with a long history of performing\, storytelling\, and teaching. Kemp honed his powerful\, intimate performance style in Cambridge’s coffeehouses\, developing into a magnetic frontman who has shared stages with artists such as Koko Taylor\, Livingston Taylor\, Gil Scott-Heron\, Kandace Springs and Taj Mahal. He has composed original music for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Complexions Contemporary Ballet\, established a songwriting residency at Boston’s Wang Theater\, and recently delivered a series of master classes at Berklee College of Music on the subject of Artists as Activists\, alongside Chad Stokes of the band Dispatch and members of the dance troupe Urban Bush Women. Kemp’s powers of observation\, his unique gift for shining a light on the modern world and what it means to be alive\, have only deepened over a lifetime devoted to the most basic and profound of pursuits: human connection. Whether he’s in the classroom\, on a film set\, leading a workshop\, or performing on the concert stage\, “at the end of the day\,” Kemp says\, “I’m an old black man telling stories and spreading the love.” \nDetails\nThe show will take place as part of the Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse Concert Series on Saturday\, January 25th at 7:30 p.m. in Clark Hall at Hancock Church\, 1912 Massachusetts Ave in downtown Lexington. Tickets are $25\, or “pay what you can” and can be purchased here \nThe venue is accessible through an elevator in the front and a stair lift in the rear. We have single-user accessible bathrooms. SUMMARY:Darlin' Corey
DESCRIPTION:This concert will be indoors at the hosts’ home in Rockport\, Mass. and capacity will be limited to 30. The suggested contribution is $20\, payable at the door by cash\, check\, or Venmo. Send email to info@whalecove.org to get more information or to request an invitation. \nFrom the northern reach of the Appalachian Trail comes the musical trio Darlin’ Corey. Drawing on the many threads of North American folk music\, their elegant harmonies are the beating heart of their sound\, in both their original music and the traditional Folk\, Old Time\, and Bluegrass music they regularly showcase. In Darlin’ Corey’s singing and playing\, you can feel the many years of dedication to these celebrated musical traditions. \nErica Brown’s fiddle-playing is at turns virtuosic and completely unpretentious. Matt Shipman is an ideal counterpart as his versatility on a dizzying array of stringed instruments (guitar\, Irish bouzouki\, 5-string banjo\, mandolin) blend seamlessly\, never timid or overpowering. Add to that Kris Day’s steady and tasteful bass playing and together they create an engaging performance of thoughtful originals and traditional songs and tunes that have influenced them along the way. Darlin’ Corey has become a well known and favorite act in the Portland\, ME area in recent years.

SUMMARY:High Tea Band
DESCRIPTION:High Tea is a Massachusetts-based “y’alternative” folk-punk duo with a unique blend of soulful harmonies and powerful guitar riffs. Lyricist\, guitarist and vocalist Isabella DeHerdt and percussionist and vocalist Isaac Eliot craft songs that are ripe with Americana heartbreak\, telling tales of growing up\, going wild\, and always coming back to the ones you love. \nPraised by the Boston Globe for their ability to “delve into the intimacies and intricacies of growing up\,” High Tea’s music resonates with audiences through its raw emotion and storytelling prowess.
