SUMMARY:Vance Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:“If Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens had a love child\, with Rodney Dangerfield as the midwife\, the results might have been something close to the great Vance Gilbert.” As the above quote from Richmond magazine suggests\, Vance Gilbert defies stereotypes. It’s little wonder then that he also exceeds expectations. In this case\, those two qualities go hand in hand. “I’m black\, I sing\, I play an acoustic guitar\, and I don’t play the blues\,” Gilbert insists. That may be a broad statement\, but it rings with truth. \nWhat he does do is make memorable music\, as evidenced by the 13 albums he’s released so far\, as well as the mark he’s made on the folk and acoustic music scenes in general. Over the course of a prolific career that extends back to the early ’90s\, he’s recorded with his good friend Ellis Paul and shared stages worldwide with Aretha Franklin\, Shawn Colvin\, Arlo Guthrie\, the Milk Carton Kids\, George Carlin (150+ shows)\, Anita Baker\, the Subdudes\, Paul Reiser and any number of others. \nHe’s also made a prominent presence at some of the world’s most prestigious gatherings\, among them the Newport\, Winnipeg\, Rocky Mountain\, Calgary\, Ottawa\, and Falcon Ridge folk festivals\, the Kate Wolf Music Festival\, and Australia’s Woodford Folk Festival and Mullum Music Festival. “There was also that one nude festival in Maryland\,” Gilbert recalls. “I don’t recall the name of that one\, but I have to admit that the name wasn’t the first thing I would remember.” \nNaturally\, Gilbert can be forgiven for that minor oversight\, given the amount of praise he’s received from the pundits. His remarkable rapport with his audiences and his free spirited performances inspired one critic to hail him as “a folkie trapped in a vaudevillian body\,” with “a voice that could have been on the opera stage\, a wit that could have been on a comedy stage and a songwriting talent that’s thrust him on the folk stage for decades.” \nContinue reading at https://vancegilbert.com/bio/

SUMMARY:Side-splitting Silliness with Deb Seymour & Stan Lyness at PCA
DESCRIPTION:WESTFORD\, MA: Join two of the funniest songwriters you’ll ever know for an evening of satire\, parody and silliness!  The duo of Deb Seymour and Stan Lyness will be taking the stage at the Parish Center for the Arts\, 10 Lincoln Street on May 27 at 7pm (Doors open 6:30pm). For ticket reservations and more information\, visit pcawestford.org. \nHow exactly does one sum up the whimsical songwriter Deb Seymour? According to a fan\, “Joni Mitchell meets Lucille Ball.” Deb Seymour writes songs that tickle your funny bone and pull at your heart strings. She is a master musical storyteller whose songs range from hitch-hiking chickens and tango-dancing Martians to blues-influenced torch songs. She plays at wineries\, festivals\, house concerts\, cafes and listening rooms. Deb is a skilled\, award-winning guitarist and singer who counts four albums of original material (currently working on the 5th). She also simulcasts her popular livestream\, “Brunch w/Deb” on her Facebook and YouTube channels every Sunday\, whether on the road or not. Her fans call themselves “Deb-Heads” and tune in from the USA\, Canada\, UK\, Germany\, Israel and Australia. \nPlaying alongside Deb is musician and satirist Stan Lyness\, a Boston-area songwriter with an unshakeable faith that\, at its core\, the universe is funny and can be forced to rhyme. Stan will leave you between stitches and tears with his witty repartee and sardonic humor. He was first moved to write by an excruciatingly dull high school social studies class\, and has ever since taken up the pen whenever things get slow. He now finds himself in “an enormously productive period.” \nSit\, chat\, sing and laugh ‘til your sides ache during Seymour & Lyness’ fun concert at the Parish Center for the Arts (PCA)\, located at 10 Lincoln Street on Westford Common. Bring your own food and drink for a complete evening of entertainment. Limited cabaret-style seating. Doors open at 6:30pm; show begins at 7pm. If the weather is horrid\, we will move indoors and capacity will be limited to 30. The suggested contribution is $20\, payable at the door by cash\, check\, or Venmo. Send email to whalecoveproductions@gmail.com to get more information or to make a reservation. \nThe Rough & Tumble\, a dynamic duo comprised of Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler\, have been captivating audiences with their unique blend of dumpster-folk and thrift store-Americana for over a decade. The Pennsylvania-born Graham and Central California’s Tyler have a knack for weaving together elements of joy\, sorrow\, comedy\, and drama in their music\, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats. Now\, in 2023\, the band is set to release Only This Far\, a 12-song collection drawing from the highs and lows of their lived experiences over all those years. \nWith a smorgasbord of eclectic instruments and a stunning blend of harmonious vocals\, the band has crafted a work of profound emotional depth with this new album. The songs are a symphony of raw\, unbridled emotion\, weaving together tales of love\, loss\, and longing with a deft touch that could only be crafted by these two songwriters who have quite literally lived on the road for the better part of a decade. It’s a true testament to the band’s unwavering dedication to their craft.

SUMMARY:First Church Dedham Friday Folk Coffeehouse Presents Andrew Innes and the Reluctant Ramblers on 5/19!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463\nContact: Geoff Tegnell\nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its eighth concert of the 2022-2023 season featuring Andrew Innes & The Reluctant Ramblers at First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, May 19\, 2023 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $10 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nAndrew Innes The Reluctant Ramblers make their first appearance at the Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham. The Ramblers draw their material primarily from Andrew’s original songs which are rooted in the slower\, dreamier side of indie-folk\, blues\, Americana and bluegrass.  Andrew Innes (Acoustic Guitar & Vocals) has been studying and performing music for almost 40 years. Andrew started at the age of 16 with harmonica and piano\, and then picked up saxophone in his senior year of high school. Over the years Andrew has fronted various jazz groups on alto and tenor saxophones; played washboard\, musical saw and harmonica with the wonderful NYC-based bluegrass/western swing band\, The Bootleg Remedy.  Andrew played saxophone and harmonica with indie-chamber pop supergroup Champale (featuring members of Clem Snide\, Luna & Nada Surf) and spent two years in the house band for the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus. He performed for many years with Uncle Jimmy’s Dirty Basement\, a provocatively unlikely collaboration between Henson-level puppeteers and an avant-garde rock band and added musical saw\, saxophones and accordion to the cinematic soundscapes of the instrumental band\, Anchor Tattoo. In recent years Andrew has shifted his primary focus to guitar\, dobro\, singing\, and songwriting and can be seen in the Boston area fronting the Reluctant Ramblers\, playing with the AKE Trio\, and accompanying singer-songwriter Carla Ryder. Check out www.weescotsman.com to sign up for Andrew’s email list and find out about upcoming shows. \nEric Smalley (Upright bass) and Kim Patch (Fiddle) play with many groups in the Boston area including The Rozzicats\, Louder Than Milk\, Creek River String Band & the Bookmatch Duo. Tim Obetz (Pedal Steel) has performed and recorded with many musicians and bands in the Boston-area including Buffalo Tom\, Will Dailey\, Terry Kitchen\, Buttercup\, and The Pineapple Ranch Hands. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. SUMMARY:Andrew Duhon
DESCRIPTION:It was Leo Tolstoy who said “All great literature is one of two stories; a man goes on a journey or a stranger comes to town\,” and in the case of Andrew Duhon and his latest album Emerald Blue\, both instances are true. Duhon temporarily left New Orleans\, his longtime home and musical muse in 2019\, finding himself inspired by the landscape of the Pacific Northwest and notably\, its colors—a hue he describes as ‘emerald blue’ for which the album is named\, the same shade looking back at him in his partner’s eyes. Had he overlooked the specific shade of her eyes while living below sea level? Or did the change of location open his mind more acutely? The record does just that: examine the familiar in the context of the unfamiliar. Emerald Blue is a probing appreciation of the dailiness of life; a note-taking exercise in living. \nDuhon channeled his new perspective into an eleven song collection\, calling on friends and collaborators including Jano Rix on drums\, percussion\, and harmonies; Myles Weeks on upright and electric basses and harmonies; and Dan Walker on keys and accordion. Duhon returned South for the recording process\, finding comfort and creativity in Maurice\, Louisiana’s storied Dockside Studios with GRAMMY-award winning engineer and longtime collaborator of Andrew’s\, Trina Shoemaker\, to capture every inch of vibe and beauty and texture each song had to offer. \nEmerald Blue in the news: \n“Andrew Duhon looks for a better balance to life on new ‘Emerald Blue’” via Gambit Weekly \nDuhon muses on the kindness of strangers and fly fishing for Coastal Angler \n“Faintly reminiscent of early M Ward and artists like Beachwood Sparks\, Bonnie “Prince” Billy\, Sparklehorse or Damien Jurado\, ‘Emerald Blue’ sits happily at the crossroads of harmony-drenched pop\, rustic americana\, Appalachian folk and about a half-dozen other styles\, all meeting and mixing around the warmth of Duhon’s vocals; world-weary\, stretched and full of soul.” –Holler \nDuhon is “a teller of stories with an undeniable voice\, weighted and soulful.” –KPCW/NPR \nNo Depression calls the album “effortless\,” noting “Duhon reminds us that everything comes in its time: adventure\, loneliness\, tragedy and — yes\, even if it’s fleeting — contentment.” \nFans can watch the music video for “Emerald Blue” at this link\, check out previously-released singles “Everybody Colored Their Own Jesus” and “Castle On Irish Bayou.” Duhon’s tour picks back up tonight in Lafayette\, LA before continuing throughout the Southeast and then over to the Pacific Northwest in late summer. SUMMARY:Heather Maloney with high Tea
DESCRIPTION:The Massachusetts-based “writer song-singer” found music in the midst of three years at a meditation center\, honing a sound moored in days of silent reflection and reverence for storytellers like Joni\, Rilke\, Ken Burns\, and the anonymous authors of Zen parables. And while she eventually traded the quiet\, structured life as a yogi for the kinetic life a touring musician\, the core of her songwriting remains centered around same curiosity about our inner world and the desire to articulate it through storytelling. She now has eight studio album releases under her belt\, each one marked by inspiring collaborations with musicians\, songwriters and producers. \nOn Heather’s 2019 album\, Soil In The Sky\, her “ability to channel emotion is radical” (PopMatters) and the tracks are stacked with special guests who help her deliver an immense range of sound and sentiment in 12 songs; there’s a duet with Dawes front-man Taylor Goldsmith on the Walt Whitman-inspired love song “We Were Together”\, an appearance by Rachael Price on the album’s opening track “Enigma”\, and Jay Ungar lends his legendary folk fiddle to “Oklahoma Lullaby”\, a song inspired by Ken Burns’ documentary The Dustbowl. (Ungar composed Ashokan Farewell in Burns’ The Civil War). The all-star band includes drummer Griffin Goldsmith (Dawes)\, and multiple members of the Amos Lee band. \nThe Bluegrass Situation called her 2015 release\, Making Me Break (produced by Band of Horses’ Bill Reynolds) “an intoxicating blend that captures the sonic texture of indie rock\, the humanity of folk and the spirituality of a Rumi poem.” \nIn 2014 she released “Woodstock”\, her collaborative effort with Boston quartet Darlingside\, which drew praise from the New York Times and Graham Nash. \nHeather’s songs have played on NPR stations across the country and her live appearances have aired on syndicated programming like eTown and AudioTree. Her song “Nightstand Drawer” was used in the season finale of the CBS TV series “Elementary”\, and her songs have also been featured on a number of editorial Spotify playlists & Starbucks’ in-store nationwide playlists. \nAs well as a songwriter and performer\, Heather is an illustrator and linocut artist who carves and prints visual representations of her songs on a variety of mediums. She considers the integration music and art to be an inspiring new chapter as a creative\, and while most of her growing catalog is reserved for her Patreon community\, she periodically releases limited-edition prints to accompany albums and singles. \nHeather has toured throughout the US & Canada as a headliner and also in support of acts including Lake Street Dive\, Shakey Graves\, Gary Clark Jr.\, Rodrigo y Gabriela\, Colin Hay (Men at Work)\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, Shawn Colvin\, Dar Williams and many more. https://www.heathermaloney.com/bio \nHIGH TEA: High Tea\, the indie-folk duo hailing from Boston MA\, has been touring with Heather Maloney. Guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Isabella DeHerdt and vocalist/ percussionist Isaac Eliot\, High Tea is a concoction of sweepingly soulful harmonies\, guitar riffs to knock your socks off\, and a refreshing blend of old blues and new pop.

SUMMARY:John Gorka
DESCRIPTION:John Gorka is perhaps the quintessential iconic singer-songwriter of the 80’s folk scene. Hailing from New Jersey\, but forged in the Greenwich Village Fast Folk scene\, he honed his craft and persona into an unmistakable image. The shy\, wry\, insightful\, and yes\, sensitive singer-songwriter has been copied and parodied. But the old coat he wove still fits\, and still suits him well. The old songs ring as true as they ever did\, and the new ones are just as good. \n

SUMMARY:Paul Rishell and Annie Raines\, April 22\,2023
DESCRIPTION:For 29 years Paul Rishell & Annie Raines have been hailed as one of the world’s best blues duos. They have recorded 6 albums together including the W.C. Handy Award-winning Moving to the Country (2000)\, and received numerous award nominations from the Blues Foundation. They have performed and recorded with John Sebastian\, Susan Tedeschi\, Pinetop Perkins and Rory Block. They have opened for Ray Charles\, Dr. John\, and Little Feat\, and performed on international radio and TV shows including Late Night with Conan O’Brien and A Prairie Home Companion. They continue to perform American roots music and their own compositions at festivals\, concert halls\, and clubs all over the world. As a working team\, Paul and Annie have racked up hundreds of thousands of miles on the road in the U.S. and Europe\, collaborated on original songs\, and released the Blues Foundation Award nominated TALKING GUITAR \, I WANT YOU TO KNOW (Tone-Cool/Artemis 1996)\, MOVING TO THE COUNTRY (2000)\, the W.C. Handy Award winner for Acoustic Blues Album of the Year\, and GOIN’ HOME (2004)\, which was nominated for two Handy Awards. \nPaul Rishell and Annie Raines’s sixth project together\, TALKING GUITAR was released in 2012 and received 2 Nominations for the Blues Foundation’s Blues Music Awards. It features Paul returning to the bare essence of country blues\, with stunning solo performances of gems by Lead Belly\, Blind Boy Fuller\, Skip James and others\, with Annie joining in on a few tunes. It is stark\, stripped down and intimate. Their previous album\, the live recording “A NIGHT IN WOODSTOCK” was released in 2008 as a CD and in 2009 as a DVD on their own Mojo Rodeo label\, and distributed internationally by Burnside Distribution\, each release earning multiple Blues Music Award nominations. The live concert features special guests John Sebastian\, Bruce Katz\, and Paul and Annie’s own backing band joining the duo for an eclectic\, high-energy set of acoustic and electric originals and classic blues songs. The DVD includes extra features such as artist biographies\, video guitar lessons and audio commentary by Rishell\, Raines and Sebastian. \n  \nPaul and Annie are equally passionate about their craft and devoted to the study and performance of a wide range of blues styles\, from the syncopated acoustic guitar wizardry of Blind Lemon Jefferson and Son House to Chicagoan “Little” Walter Jacob’s swinging amplified harmonica. Paul has reached what Boston Phoenix writer Ted Drozdowski called “a place deep and resonant as Robert Johnson’s crossroads\, where authenticity\, soul\, and a sense of purpose and commitment ring out in every note he sings and plays.” Annie has added vocals\, mandolin\, piano\, and other instruments to her musical arsenal\, while being recognized by top professionals and fans worldwide as the “queen of the blues harmonica.” Says blues legend Pinetop Perkins\, “She plays so good it hurts!” \nTouring internationally at festivals\, clubs\, and concert halls\, and teaching workshops and seminars\, Paul Rishell & Annie Raines have earned loyal fans around the globe. Paul and Annie are featured in the new jug band music documentary\, Chasin’ Gus’ Ghost\, which debuted at the San Francisco Film Festival in August 2007. They have performed on diverse radio and TV shows including A Prairie Home Companion\, Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, and PBS’s Arthur. They have performed and recorded with Susan Tedeschi\, John Sebastian\, Pinetop Perkins\, and Rory Block. Susan Tedeschi recorded an “unplugged” version of Paul’s Blues on a Holiday with Paul and Annie for her 2003 release\, Wait For Me. \nAnnie Raines was born in 1969 in Boston and grew up in the suburb of Newton\, Massachusetts. She picked up the blues harp at 17 and made her stage debut at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge a few months before her high school graduation. Enthralled by the recordings of Muddy Waters\, Little Walter Jacobs\, Big Walter Horton and Sonny Boy Williamson\, she became a fixture at Boston area blues jams. She briefly attended Antioch College and 1988 interned with Washington\, DC homeless rights activist Mitch Snyder\, who persuaded her to drop out of school to pursue her musical career. One of the few female blues harmonica players in the country\, Annie played the New England club circuit with local bands\, and traveled to Chicago where she met and played with many of her musical idols including Pinetop Perkins\, Louis Myers\, and James Cotton. She also enjoyed yearlong stints with the Tarbox Ramblers and the Susan Tedeschi Band\, going on to perform on Susan’s first three albums. She lives in Boston with her number one musical hero\, Paul Rishell. \nPaul Rishell was born in Brooklyn\, New York in 1950\, descended from a long line of Methodist preachers and Norwegian painters. At the age of ten\, he discovered that he could keep time on the drums\, though his feet didn’t reach the pedals. He started a band a few years later\, playing surf music and rock ‘n roll\, until a friend turned him on to the country blues records of Son House\, Robert Johnson\, Charley Patton\, and Blind Lemon Jefferson. He immediately took up the guitar and in the early 70’s Paul moved to Cambridge\, Massachusetts and had the chance to play with many of the first and second generation of blues masters — including Son House\, Johnny Shines\, Sonny Terry\, Brownie McGhee\, and Howlin’ Wolf. Paul Rishell’s debut recording\, BLUES ON A HOLIDAY (Tone-Cool) was released in 1990 to resounding critical acclaim. The album was half acoustic\, half electric\, and established Paul as a masterful\, versatile blues player and as well as a deeply soulful singer and songwriter. He followed that with SWEAR TO TELL THE TRUTH in 1993\, which featured heart-stopping solo performances as well as guest artists Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters and “Little”Annie Raines. Paul’s original music has been used in plays\, films\, and countless television shows including Friends\, Oprah\, and A&E’s Biography. He has built up a stellar reputation over 40 years as a performer\, teacher\, and torchbearer of the country blues tradition. His former students include Susan Tedeschi and Michael Tarbox. Dirt Road Blues\, Paul’s instructional video/CD-Rom for Truefire.com\, was released in 2008 with detailed demonstrations and transcriptions of his original songs and songs by Scrapper Blackwell\, Blind Boy Fuller\, and many others. He is currently serving as a visiting artist at Berklee College of Music in Boston. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebookTwitterShare\n\n
