SUMMARY:Garnet Rogers
DESCRIPTION:This will be a very special evening with Garnet Rogers who played at the very special coffee house in Peterborough\, NH\, The Folkway\, in the mid 1970’s with his brother Stan. On August 2nd there will be a presentation at the Amos Fortune lecture series\, in Jaffrey\, NH about the impact The Folkway had on our region during it’s history from 1975 until 1996 when it sadly closed permanently for the 2nd time\, as well as the impact it has on the musicians and our region today. Garnet will be present at this presentation. Watch the papers for much more on that as it draws nearer. \n“Garnet Rogers is capable of awe-inspiring and unpredictable stuff – and that includes more than just music” \nResolutely independent\, Garnet Rogers has turned down offers from major labels to do his music his own way. \nIn a darkened bedroom\, lit only by the amber glow from an old floor model radio\, two young brothers aged 6 and 12 lay in their beds\, listening to the country music broadcasts from the Grand Ol’ Opry\, and practiced their harmonies. Two years later\, the youngest one was playing the definitive 8-year-old’s version of “Desolation Row” on his ukulele. He soon abandoned that instrument to teach himself the flute\, violin and guitar. \nWithin ten years\, and barely out of high school\, Garnet Rogers was on the road as a full-time working musician with his older brother Stan. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential acts in North American folk music. \nSince then\, Garnet Rogers has established himself as ‘One of the major talents of our time”. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”\, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth\, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range\, and thoughtful\, dramatic phrasing\, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music\, like the man himself\, is literate\, passionate\, highly sensitive\, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail\, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart\, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs\, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again. \nmuch more https://garnetrogers.com/

SUMMARY:Ben Cosgrove
DESCRIPTION:Weather permitting\, this concert will take place on the covered patio of the hosts’ home in Rockport\, Massachusetts. If the weather is horrid\, we will move indoors and capacity will be limited to 30. The suggested contribution is $20\, payable at the door by cash\, check\, or Venmo. Send email to whalecoveproductions@gmail.com to get more information or to request an invitation. \nBen Cosgrove is a traveling composer\, pianist\, and multi-instrumentalist from northern New England. He performs regularly all over the country\, presenting a unique variety of original instrumental music that explores themes of landscape\, geography\, and environment while straddling a line between folk and classical music. “Like a sonic plein-air painter\,” wrote the Boston Globe\, “[Cosgrove] uses his piano as a paintbrush — and he’s made a name for himself doing it.” His “electric and exhilarating” solo piano performances are at once dazzling and intimate: music that has been described as “stunning” and “compelling and powerful\,” — Red Line Roots has called him “stupidly talented” — all presented with “warmth\, humor\, honesty\, and the easy familiarity of a troubadour.”

SUMMARY:Eileen Ivers
DESCRIPTION:All non-refunded ticket holders – Your tickets will be good for this new date. If this date does not work for you\, you can request a reimbursement. Please email your request to pfmsconcerts@gmail.com .  \nPlease spread the word and let’s pack the theater for Eileen Ivers. \n… \nShe’s been called a “sensation” by Billboard magazine and “the Jimi Hendrix of the violin\,” by The New York Times. “She electrifies the crowd with a dazzling show of virtuoso playing” says The Irish Times \nEileen and her full ensemble will rock the Park Theatre in Jaffrey on Saturday night.  They have headlined prestigious performing arts centers\, and numerous symphonies\, performed at major festivals worldwide\, and have appeared on national and international television. The L.A. Times proclaims\, “Ivers’ presentation was music with the kind of life and spirit that come together when talented artists from different backgrounds find the linkages that connect all forms of music…no wonder the audience loved every minute.” \n“Not everything in life is beautiful\, but there sure is beauty in life. To seek it\, embrace it\, and let it shine embodies a good life. Scatter the light…” EILEEN \nIt is a rare and select grade of spectacular artists whose work is so boldly imaginative and clearly virtuosic that it alters the medium. It has been said that the task of respectfully exploring the traditions and progression of the Celtic fiddle is quite literally on Eileen Ivers’ shoulders. The Washington Post states\, “She suggests the future of the Celtic fiddle.” \nIvers’ recording credits include over 80 contemporary and traditional albums and numerous movie scores. Eileen is hailed as one of the great innovators and pioneers in the Celtic and World music genres. \nGrammy awarded\, Emmy nominated\, London Symphony Orchestra\, Boston Pops\, guest starred with over 50 orchestras\, original Musical Star of Riverdance\, Nine Time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion\, Sting\, Hall and Oates\, The Chieftains\, ‘Fiddlers 3’ with Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and Regina Carter\, Patti Smith\, Al Di Meola\, Steve Gadd\, founding member of Cherish the Ladies\, movie soundtracks including “Gangs of New York”\, performed for Presidents and Royalty worldwide…this is a short list of accomplishments\, headliners\, tours\, and affiliations. Fiddler Eileen Ivers has established herself as the pre-eminent exponent of the Irish fiddle in the world today. \nThe daughter of Irish immigrants\, Eileen Ivers grew up in the culturally diverse neighborhood of the Bronx\, New York. Rooted in Irish traditional music since the age of eight\, Eileen proceeded to win nine All-Ireland fiddle championships\, a tenth on tenor banjo and over 30 championship medals\, making her one of the most awarded persons ever to compete in these prestigious competitions. \nBeing an Irish-American\, the intrigue of learning more about the multicultural sounds of her childhood took hold. After graduating magna cum laude in Mathematics from Iona College and while continuing her post-graduate work in Mathematics\, Eileen fully immersed herself in the different genres of music which she experienced growing up in New York. With “unIVERSal roots”\, her energetic\, joyous\, passionate band\, Eileen continues to connect music\, cultures\, stories\, and emotions that tie us together. In 2019\, Iona College conferred upon Eileen Ivers the degree of Doctor of Arts\, honoris causa for her “lifelong commitment to innovation\, excellence and deep dedication to bringing people together through music.” \n  \n  \nhttps://www.eileenivers.com/about \n

SUMMARY:Martin and Eliza Carthy
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 23\, 2024\, 7pm ET \nFirst Parish of Sudbury\, 327 Concord Rd\, Sudbury\, MA (handicap accessible)\nAdmission: \n\nGeneral admission: $25\nStudents: $10\n17 and under free\n\nFor more than 50 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s greatest innovators\, one of its best loved\, most enthusiastic and\, at times\, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill\, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers\, not only from within the folk scene\, but also far beyond it. Trailblazing musical partnerships with\, amongst others\, Steeleye Span\, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums\, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums\, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels (Topic TSCD527) was the latest. Whether in the folk clubs (which he continues to champion)\, on the concert stage or making TV appearances (he was the subject of the acclaimed Originals music documentary strand on BBC 2) – there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn’t played. \nEliza Carthy is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and engaging performers of her generation. Twice nominated for the Mercury Prize and winner of innumerable other accolades over a 20 year career\, Eliza has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists including\, Paul Weller\, Rufus and Martha Wainwright\, Patrick Wolf and Bob Neuwirth. More than most\, Eliza Carthy has revitalised folk music and captured the most hardened of dissenters with intelligent\, charismatic and boundary-crossing performance. \nFSSGB is honored to be able to bring you this concert\, which Martin and Eliza are fitting in before they head off to be on staff at TradMaD Camp in Plymouth\, MA.
