SUMMARY:Vance Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:“If Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens had a love child\, with Rodney Dangerfield as the midwife\, the results might have been something close to the great Vance Gilbert.” As the above quote from Richmond magazine suggests\, Vance Gilbert defies stereotypes. It’s little wonder then that he also exceeds expectations. In this case\, those two qualities go hand in hand. “I’m black\, I sing\, I play an acoustic guitar\, and I don’t play the blues\,” Gilbert insists. That may be a broad statement\, but it rings with truth. \nWhat he does do is make memorable music\, as evidenced by the 13 albums he’s released so far\, as well as the mark he’s made on the folk and acoustic music scenes in general. Over the course of a prolific career that extends back to the early ’90s\, he’s recorded with his good friend Ellis Paul and shared stages worldwide with Aretha Franklin\, Shawn Colvin\, Arlo Guthrie\, the Milk Carton Kids\, George Carlin (150+ shows)\, Anita Baker\, the Subdudes\, Paul Reiser and any number of others. \nHe’s also made a prominent presence at some of the world’s most prestigious gatherings\, among them the Newport\, Winnipeg\, Rocky Mountain\, Calgary\, Ottawa\, and Falcon Ridge folk festivals\, the Kate Wolf Music Festival\, and Australia’s Woodford Folk Festival and Mullum Music Festival. “There was also that one nude festival in Maryland\,” Gilbert recalls. “I don’t recall the name of that one\, but I have to admit that the name wasn’t the first thing I would remember.” \nNaturally\, Gilbert can be forgiven for that minor oversight\, given the amount of praise he’s received from the pundits. His remarkable rapport with his audiences and his free spirited performances inspired one critic to hail him as “a folkie trapped in a vaudevillian body\,” with “a voice that could have been on the opera stage\, a wit that could have been on a comedy stage and a songwriting talent that’s thrust him on the folk stage for decades.” \nContinue reading at https://vancegilbert.com/bio/

Individually they have performed locally at coffeehouses including Wakefield’s Linden Tree Coffeehouse\, & regional festivals. Janet Feld\, Esther Friedman & Jackie Damsky have joined forces as The Secret Sauce\, performing tasty originals & choice covers\, with lots of sweet 3-part harmony\, plus guitar\, mandolin\, & violin. They came together over a love of each other’s songs\, great friendship\, and fun\, and that’s how the Secret Sauce rolls! \nJanet Feld is an award-winning performing songwriter\, appearing at folk festivals and coffeehouses from coast to coast throughout a nearly three-decade career. She teaches private lessons and offers video lesson programs to people of all ages. She teaches guitar and songwriting at The Passim School of Music and is the founder and Chief Music Officer at Janet’s Planet: Music Lessons for Humanoids\, Inc. \nEsther Friedman is a Boston-based acoustic singer & songwriter. Her expressive songs are long remembered by her audiences. She started writing songs in the mid-nineties after moving to the area from Cleveland for Lesley University’s Expressive Art Therapy\, Master’s Degree program. Inspired by buskers who braved street corners and t-stops\, she started writing and performing. Today\, she provides therapy in a private practice\, counseling those in recovery from trauma\, while performing and song writing as much as humanly possible. \nJackie Damsky was originally trained as a classical violinist\, and has developed a unique improvisational style over a range of genres including jazz\, folk\, blues\, acoustic rock\, and popular music. From halls and clubs to the recording studio\, Jackie’s warm and sweet\, passionate and evocative violin playing leaves listeners profoundly affected and deeply moved. Jackie weaves a harmonic tapestry with her fellow musicians\, adding depth\, color\, richness and a little magic. \nTickets:  $20 with children 12 and under free\, cash or check at the door.  Thanks to  partial funding from the Mass Cultural Council\, Wakefield Arts Council and The Jewish Women’s Endowment Fund of the North Shore. SUMMARY:Lynne Hanson
DESCRIPTION:Weather permitting\, this concert will take place on the covered patio of the hosts’ home in Rockport\, Massachusetts. If the weather is horrid\, we will move indoors and capacity will be limited to 30. The suggested contribution is $20\, payable at the door by cash\, check\, or Venmo. Send email to whalecoveproductions@gmail.com to get more information or to make a reservation. \nToo tough for folk and too blues-influenced for country\, Lynne Hanson’s brand of porch music with a little red dirt can turn on a dime from a sunshine\, blue sky ballad to a full on thunderstorm of gritty Americana swamp from one song to the next. Her hard living music has garnered her the nickname “Canada’s Queen of Americana.” And while her deep\, bluesy croon has drawn comparisons to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch\, it’s the poetry of her lyrics that really sets her apart. \nHanson is known for her high energy\, roots guitar driven live performances\, whether playing solo or with her band the Good Intentions. She has an uncanny way of connecting with her audience with an authenticity that is as entertaining as it is disarming.
