SUMMARY:Annual FSSGB Members' Concert
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our annual Members’ Concert! We’ll continue the relatively new tradition of having this event on Zoom and livestreamed to Facebook Live. This is a favorite event of the year for many of us — an opportunity to delight in the rich and diverse talents of FSSGB members\, old and new. \nAll FSSGB members are invited to sign up to perform one song or tune. Email info@fssgb.org to reserve a spot. \nAll performers will be in the Zoom meeting (muted during others’ performances)\, and the show will be livestreamed to Facebook so everyone else can watch. (You don’t need to have a Facebook account to watch the livestream.) \nWe will accept donations during the performance which will benefit FSSGB. Much of that money will go to scholarships which enable young Boston-area musicians to attend folk music camps.

SUMMARY:First Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse Presents the Ruth and Ben String Band on 1/26!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell \nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its fourth concert of the 2023-2024 season featuring the Ruth and Ben String Band at First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, January 26\, 2024 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $15 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe Ruth and Ben String Band plays electrifying old-time Appalachian music. Led by guitarist Ruth Rappaport and her fiddler son\, Ben Wetherbee\, the band’s repertoire includes rousing fiddle tunes and traditional\, modern\, and original songs that feature tight harmony singing. They are joined by clawhammer banjo player Joel Wennerstrom and upright bass player Michael Siegel. As a multi-generational four-piece band\, their musical influences are far reaching and include many genres–from Irish fiddle tunes and early country to punk. Ruth brings years of experience as a principal member of the ‘80’s and ’90’s all-woman old-time band from Boston\, “The Poodles\,” touring Europe and the US.  Her son Ben is following in Ruth’s footsteps with his musically diverse fiddle playing\, which has garnered much attention through his many performances in the area. Joel’s rhythmic and melodic banjo playing can be heard on recordings alongside members of the Punch Brothers and various Appalachian fiddle contest winners. You can find Michael playing in numerous Americana\, Bluegrass\, and old-time groups\, including Rachel Sumner’s “Traveling Light” band.  Together they make a highly entertaining quartet.  Hold onto your hats! This will be a lively show! Ruth and Ben have recently released new album\, “Newfangled Folk” and look forward to playing selections from the album at the show. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and the Concerts at First Church Saturday classical concert series\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events.

SUMMARY:Mark Erelli ** SOLD OUT **
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for youth age 18 and under. The suggested contribution at the door is $25 for adults\, $5 for juniors\, and $50 for families. \nMark Erelli turns adversity into finely embroidered rock songs that burn with urgency on his 2023 album Lay Your Darkness Down. Following full-bodied rock forebears Tom Petty\, George Harrison\, and Roy Orbison\, Erelli’s songwriting explores the unknown glories of this planet and love’s transformational power. Over his two decade-long career\, the singer-songwriter-sideman-producer-writer has proven himself equally at home in a multitude of roles: producing albums for artists like GRAMMY-winner Lori McKenna; serving as a sideman guitarist for artists like Paula Cole\, Marc Cohn\, and Josh Ritter; writing and producing his own material\, like 2018’s “By Degrees\,” for which he was nominated for Song of the Year at the Americana Honors and Awards; and most recently\, becoming an advocate for low-vision artists and working with venues to make their spaces more accessible. Written in the wake of his diagnosis with a degenerative retinal disease\, Erelli’s upcoming 2023 album Lay Your Darkness Down is the next step on Erelli’s journey\, following up on 2020’s Blindsided\, which garnered praise from Rolling Stone Country\, the Associated Press\, NPR\, The Boston Globe\, and more.

Her short story writing turned into songwriting in the 1970s when she bought her first guitar.  Influenced early by the music of Joni Mitchell\, it was during the 1980’s when she found herself drawn to the lyrics of Greg Brown.  She credits her finger-picking style to the guidance she’s received over the years from different guitar teaches\, including the south coast’s Steve Allain and John Baptista. With one EP behind her\, ‘Green Mountain Blue’\, Battistello is just releasing a full CD\, ‘Introvert’s Buffet (or What I Did on My COVID Vacation)’. www.dianebattistello.com \nBoston musician Sam Bayer is your literate\, exuberant guide to an imaginary world where housewives win the Nobel Prize in physics\, poker-playing children gamble over their bedtimes\, and metaphorical elephants pirouette in the den\, four and a half minutes at a time. His music has been described as “about important things with his stories about seemingly small things”.  Stories about regular people.  John runs the long running PCA Open mic. in Westford Ma. and is in the process of recording a new collection of songs. johnfreullo.com \nMike Laureanno hails from Fall River\, MA an old mill-town infamous for its axe wielding resident Lizzie Borden and famous for its chow mein sandwiches and pork pies! A passionate performer\, Mike’s songs are visceral and evocative. He is proud of his roots and many of his songs deal with his gritty blue-collar hometown and the lives of his family and friends. He is a winner of the 2017 Wildflower\, TX songwriting contest\, the 2016 Woody Guthrie songwriting contest and a 2016 Kerrville New Folk\, TX finalist.  mikelaureanno.com \nAnne Sandstrom is a singer-songwriter who draws inspiration from life (and near-death) experiences\, history\, social issues\, and even books. She carefully crafts lyrics and sets them to intricate melodies\, accompanied by guitar played in one of a number of open tunings. Although trained in music theory and composition as a high school student at Berklee\, Anne relies on her innate musical sense to create her poetic songs. During COVID lockdown\, Anne took the opportunity to virtually travel to the U.S. southwest\, Scotland\, England\, and Israel\, where enthusiastic audiences requested numerous repeat appearances. Her music was featured in a video produced by Nobel Peace Prize recipient International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. She has also performed at events to advocate for nuclear disarmament.  https://annesandstrom.bandcamp.com/ \nPete Vilbig\, a fiction writer and former journalist\, writes songs that combine strong narrative and evocative language\, often about the American scene. Pete covered the contra war in Central America for the Boston Globe and crime and politics in Miami for the Miami Herald\, but he’s also been a furniture mover\, apartment painter\, a group home counselor\, and a New York City public high school teacher. Currently he teaches writing at Harvard College. In NYC Pete busked in the subway and Central Park\, and joined the Jack Hardy Songwriters Exchange. SUMMARY:Stone Soup Coffeehouse Presents Wintesong / Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem
DESCRIPTION:We New Englanders have two primary coping mechanisms for wintertime: introspection and celebration. We hole up and reflect on our lives\, and then we let loose and party. Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem’s Wintersong program does both\, swinging from a 15th century carol to fiddle- and percussion-driven New Year’s shouts from the Georgia Sea Islands and Louisiana\, to bluesy and banjo-driven settings of modern songwriters — and then back\, to original settings of verse from Tennyson\, Chesterton\, and Longfellow.\nThere are songs about a baby born in Bethlehem\, including the electric guitar-driven “Let’s Make a Baby King” (by Jesse Winchester)\, a soaring version of the spiritual “Children\, Go Where I Send Thee;” and “Singing in the Land\,” an Appalachian hymn in four-part harmony. There are also songs about love and war\, loss and hope. There are songs about the emptiness of commercial Christmas\, and the fullness of the ideas that brought it to be.\n\nRani Arbo & daisy mayhem’s Wintersong program sidesteps the holiday canon and digs up the power\, beauty and hopeful yearning at the roots of this holiday. These are songs — and musicians —full of fierce poetry and wild joy; this program is their ode to light and dark\, and to the balance of both at the turn of the year.

SUMMARY:Randall Kromm
DESCRIPTION:Suggested donation is $15 at the door. \nA lifelong musician with a background in musical theater\, early music\, and the 1980s Boston indie pop scene\, Randall Kromm reinvented himself as a folksinger in 2009 and soon realized he’d found his musical home.  Playing at coffeehouses\, open mikes\, and clubs in the greater Boston area\, Randall quickly distinguished himself as a songwriter and performer.  In the years since\, he has performed sold-out shows at Club Passim\, New England’s premier folk venue\, released four CDs\, Water Wheel (2011)\, Holidays and Homecomings (2011)\, Time Won’t Let Us Stay (2014)\, and Rough and Polished Stones (2017)\, and received a multitude of accolades from the music community\, including Christine Lavin and Don White. \nRandall is an adherent to the principle of writing what you know\, Randall composing  beautifully crafted songs of ordinary life that focus on themes of family\, relationships\, and growing older with wit and insight.  His most recent CD\, Rough and Polished Stones\, was chosen by Folk DJ Rich Warren of the Midnight Special radio program as “Rich’s pick” for the month of October 2017 and in 2018 received a glowing review in the premier roots music publication No Depression.  The review lauds Randall’s effective songwriting across a variety of genres\, comparing it to the work of Hank Williams and Towns Van Zandt\, and concludes: “Randall is covering a genre that Tom Waits isn’t\, that Leonard Cohen touched upon but never developed\, that Buddy Miller and John Prine do but always seem to pour a little vinegar in.  Kromm pours no whiskey into his tunes. They are just wholeheartedly the truth – the naked truth.” \nA prolific songwriter\, Randall frequently returns to the studio\, often joined by his two oldest daughters\, Emma and Grace\, talented singers in their own right who have a natural gift for harmony.  Randall currently working on a new CD of holiday-themed songs\, Sentimental Season\, due to be released on October 1\, 2018.  Randall also performs regularly at folk venues in and around Boston.

SUMMARY:The Kennedys
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: NEW earlier showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\nTwo of our favorites return! At well over a million miles of roadwork\, including two stints as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, Pete and Maura Kennedy show no signs of slowing down either on tour or in the creative realm. \nSongwriting duo Pete and Maura Kennedy make a strong return to the studio and stage after three years of weekly live-streamed lockdown-era concerts. They took the opportunity to explore classic songwriting in depth\, performing over a thousand songs during the pandemic. That vast overview strengthened and refined their own writing and laid the foundation for this new collection of original\, socially-conscious songs. \n“After such a deep dive into American roots music\, we felt like we had a new set of writing tools. We were ready to create this body of work\, and there’s just SO much to write about\,” says Maura. “During our five-year hiatus from writing and recording\, America changed in massive ways\, divisive ways that have shaken our whole foundation. That has to be addressed by creative artists\, those of us who have a voice to speak for others. Our love of the great things about this country\, things that are under threat\, is the reason we decided to make “Headwinds” the title track of the CD. Political and social headwinds are making it hard to get back “home’ to our greatness as a nation. We want to push back in a positive way against those winds.” \nIn addition to singing and writing\, Pete and Maura are multi-instrumentalists. The thirteen songs are cast in a soundscape that draws from the classic canon of American roots\, in keeping with the theme of getting back “home” as a nation. Acoustic and electric guitars\, a vintage steel guitar\, a gospel-inflected piano/organ mix\, and even a slide ukulele all add colors to a songbag of sounds that have drawn us together during hard times. Pete and Maura believe that those sounds still have the power to pull us through again. \nThe Kennedys began their writing and touring life three decades ago as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, developing their own sound as a frequent support act on Nanci’s tours across America\, Ireland\, Scotland and England. Collaborations with Nanci continued\, culminating in Pete and Maura producing her final album\, “Intersections.” Along the way\, they hosted a nationwide radio program\, “The Dharma Cafe” on Sirius/XM\, wrote and released sixteen CDs of original music\, and have been core artists on folk radio\, expanding their audience further with the inception of the AAA and Americana formats.
