SUMMARY:Pierre Bensusan
DESCRIPTION:Back in 1974\, Pierre Bensusan (www.pierrebensusan.com) was cutting his teeth as a performer on the folk scene in Paris and other cities in France when one of his idols\, banjo great Bill Keith\, offered him his first official paying gig ever touring Western Europe with his bluegrass band. The French-Algerian upstart\, humbly launching a four decade career was hired to play mandolin. But when Keith heard his groundbreaking approach to the acoustic guitar\, he decided to allow Bensusan a few key spotlights on that instrument. \nDecades later\, when Bensusan was looking for potential finishing touches for “Encore”\, his ambitious and expansive retrospective collection celebrating 40 years as a globetrotting live performer\, he discovered a reel to reel tape with a Swiss National Radio recording of a concert in Lausanne from that tour. While the tireless troubadour’s original plan for the 3-CD set was to include tracks recorded between 1998 and 2013 in France\, Canada\, Ireland\, Austria and especially the U.S. (where he regularly records)\, Bensusan decided to round out the 35-track set by starting “Disc 2” with a set of five titles from this show\, including two bluegrass songs. \nIn all\, Encore features 11 tracks never previously released commercially in any form. \nEngineered in Los Angeles by Grammy winner Rich Breen\, Encore also includes a handful of songs featuring Bensusan’s beautiful French language vocals (“Cordilliere” and “Pas Sage\,” among others) and wordless vocalese (“Bamboul’hiver”); two cuts with future Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess from a commissioned 1998 concert in Northern France that included a 200-piece children’s choir (including the previously unreleased “Anthem For The Ocean”); and the 18-minute setpiece “Celtic Medley.” In all\, Encore features 11 tracks never previously released commercially in any form. \nhttp://www.pierrebensusan.com  \nhttp://www.facebook.com/pierrebensusan \nhttps://twitter.com/pbensusan \nhttp://www.youtube.com/user/bensusanhq

Click here for tickets or more information. \nThe winner of the 2022 NPR Tiny Desk Contest\, Alisa Amador’s music is a synthesis of the many styles she’s voraciously absorbed: rock\, jazz\, funk and alternative folk\, all wrapped in the spirit of the Latin music she grew up with. NPR’s Cyrena Touros calls her “a pitch-perfect rendition of my wildest dreams\,” and NPR’s Bob Boilen calls Alisa “a powerful voice whose tender performance commands attention and fosters connection.” Alisa has opened for such artists as Lake Street Dive\, Madison Cunningham\, Watchhouse\, and countless others. Alisa’s soulful singing\, poetically incisive lyrics\, and syncopated rhythms are likely to make you cry\, laugh\, and dance all within one set. Alisa released her debut EP\, Narratives\, in 2021. \n“Nothing’s wrong\, I just feel the whole wide world\,” award-winning songwriter Hayley Sabella sings on Sorrow:Joy\, a track from her new album Flew The Nest. Hayley has become known for this kind of simplicity in truth-telling\, combining poetic lyrics with gripping melodies that are “sometimes cold and deadly\, other times refreshing and full of life.” (Rolling Stone Country)

To that end\, he is currently releasing a hard rock album called Ferilus – “Fearless\, feral\, and slightly perilous\, this is the album known as Ferilus.” This album goes all the way back to Mark’s days of hammering it out with garage rock bands. If you have been in need of a solid\, throw down the gauntlet\, and rock your socks off album\, this one might just do the trick.\n \nNot interested in resting on this release\, another more acoustic album entitled\, These Are The Moments is already finished and set to release in the late fall. \nMarnie Hall is a classically-trained electric violinist\, string arranger and solo artist who has performed\, taught and recorded in the Boston area since 1995.Marnie has played in the backing and touring orchestras for The Moody Blues\, Joni Mitchell\, Brian Wilson\, The Irish Tenors and Johnny Mathis. SUMMARY:Linden Tree presents Grace Morrison & Connor Garvey Live in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Linden Tree presents Grace Morrison & Connor Garvey Live in Concert \nThe Linden Tree Coffeehouse’s 38th season continues with two regional singer-songwriters who have been receiving national notice:  Massachusetts’ Grace Morrison and Maine’s Connor Garvey.  The Saturday\, November 5th concert will begin at 7:30 pm in the social hall of the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Wakefield. \nAlthough Grace Morrison spent much of her musical career away from the spotlight\, in recent years she has been discovered as a very talented singer-songwriter including a special gig at Nashville’s famous Bluebird .  With new album\, Daughter\, Morrison establishes herself as a confident\, refreshing voice in country-pop. The 12-song collection is certain to find favor with fans of the storytelling and delivery of Jewel and Lisa Loeb\, as well as with those who enjoy singing along with Boyz II Men on their car stereo. Morrison displays an ability to embody a number of characters over the course of Daughter\, from that of the title track\, to loner\, to confidant\, to partier\, to the restless rambler seeking an escape from small-town life\, and finally\, to mother. \nA formidable instrumentalist\, Morrison capably handles far more than lead vocal duties\, rocking out on electric guitar on the pulsing “Put the Bottle Down\,” and playing acoustic throughout the album\, as well as contributing background vocals\, piano\, banjo\, and synth. Our audience will hear some songs from her upcoming 2023 CD\, “Mostly Modern\,” produced in Austin. \nMorrison has won a number of prestigious awards including the Grand Prize of the New England Songwriting Competition and the WPRI Rhode Show Big Break contest where her music video was played on the season finale of American Idol. In 2019\, Grace was selected to be an Official Showcase performer at the Southeast Regional Folk Alliance (TN)\, the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance (TX)\, named a finalist in the Wildflower (TX) Festival performing singer-songwriter contest\, and selected to perform in the Emerging Artist Showcase at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (NY). Her sophomore solo album\, Reasons\, debuted at #2 on the Roots Music Report’s Top 50 Contemporary Country Airplay Chart. \nConnor Garvey is an award-winning singer-songwriter from Portland\, Maine\, with the amiable presence of an entertainer\, the lyrical depth of a poet\, and the enchantment of a storyteller. Garvey leaves audiences uplifted and inspired through a positive message delivered in a way The Portland Press Herald says proves you can be optimistic and self-aware without being boring. His unique sandy tenor and masterful blend of rhythm and melody draw comparison to Paul Simon and contemporaries Josh Ritter and Jason Mraz. He wins song competitions. He fills rooms. But most of all he moves people. \nFirst time listeners often are drawn to Garvey’s engaging performance style\, accomplished musicianship\, and memorable melodies. But his lyrics project a depth and sincerity that allow the observant listener to find meaning beyond the catchy hook. Meanwhile\, the intricate production of his albums adds emotional depth and keeps the songs fresh play after play. \nThis combination of songwriting and performance strength has earned Garvey numerous awards including being named winner of the Kerrville New Folk\, Rocky Mountain Folks Fest\, SolarFest\, Wildflower Art and Music Festival and Maine Songwriters Association songwriting competitions\, voted as Most Wanted artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, nominated for Best Male Performer in the New England Music Awards\, and a top new singer songwriter by Sirius XM’s The Coffeehouse. \nTickets for those attending are $20\,  cash or check at the door.  Please reserve your seats by calling 781-246-2836. Masks recommended but not required.  Bottled beverages and wrapped snacks are currently available. \nOur previous streaming shows\, including last month’s Squeezebox Stompers\, are still available for viewing on our YouTube and Facebook pages linked from our home page: www.LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org \nThe Linden Tree Coffeehouse operates\, in part\, with thanks to partial support from Wakefield’s Arts Council of the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Since their move to Boston in 2001\, the Heatons have become an integral part of Boston’s vibrant trad music scene. Shannon co-founded Boston’s Celtic music fest and served on its board for 15 years\, creating performance and mentoring opportunities for hundreds of traditional musicians and dancers. She was named Massachusetts Traditional Artist Fellow in 2016\, and she hosts the culture podcast Irish Music Stories. Matt has performed with countless ensembles\, including the Karan Casey Band\, Boys of the Lough\, and Robbie O’Connell. In addition to his work as an Irish accompanist on guitar and bouzouki\, Matt is an active performer for children and families. He has received multiple MCC grants for his engaging sing-alongs and rockabilly tinged albums. He also fronts surf-rock band Electric Heaters. Matt and Shannon have a comfortable stage presence and a warm connection with their audiences. They are world class American performers with Irish roots and universal appeal. “Their playing is masterful and inventive\, their arrangements city-smart and spacious. Still\, they never forget that Irish music is\, at its heart\, a neighborly form\, meant for sharing\, not showing off.” —The Boston Globe

SUMMARY:Don White
DESCRIPTION:There is no one-word description for what Don White does. He’s an award-winning singer/songwriter\, a comedian\, an author\, and a storyteller. He’s been bringing audiences to laughter and tears for thirty years\, released ten CDs\, three live DVDs\, and a book\, Memoirs of a C Student. His latest album is Live at the Guthrie Center\, available now. In 2011\, he won the Jerry Christen Memorial Award\, given out by Boston Area Coffeehouse Association\, for his work with the community and that same year was given a key to the city in his hometown of Lynn\, Massachusetts. \nWhite has opened for Arlo Guthrie\, Ritchie Havens. Louden Wainwright III\, and Taj Mahal\, shared a bill with David Bromberg\, Janis Ian\, and Lyle Lovett. White has been featured in storytelling festivals around the country including the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough\, Tennessee and the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival in Utah. Since 2015\, he has joined master storytellers Bil Lepp and Bill Harley in Father’s Daze\, a hilarious three-man storytelling show about the triumphs and tribulations of fatherhood. He toured North America for nine years with folk songwriting legend Christine Lavin\, with whom he still plays the occasional show. \nDon’s approach to music is a unique blend. If he just played folk music\, it would be a handy label. But he has invented his own genre with a mix of humor and powerful songwriting. White’s arc as a writer and performer has taken him from his industrial hometown of Lynn\, Massachusetts\, through Boston’s comedy clubs and coffeehouses\, and onto stages around the country. At every point\, White has been the ultimate observer\, infusing his work with his experiences as a husband\, a father\, a seeker\, and a joker.

SUMMARY:Garnet Rodgers
DESCRIPTION:“Garnet Rogers is capable of awe-inspiring and unpredictable stuff – and that includes more than just music” \nIn a darkened bedroom\, lit only by the amber glow from an old floor model radio\, two young brothers aged 6 and 12 lay in their beds\, listening to the country music broadcasts from the Grand Ol’ Opry\, and practiced their harmonies. Two years later\, the youngest one was playing the definitive 8-year-old’s version of “Desolation Row” on his ukulele. He soon abandoned that instrument to teach himself the flute\, violin and guitar. \nWithin ten years\, and barely out of high school\, Garnet Rogers was on the road as a full-time working musician with his older brother Stan. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential acts in North American folk music. \nSince then\, Garnet Rogers has established himself as ‘One of the major talents of our time”. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”\, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth\, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range\, and thoughtful\, dramatic phrasing\, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music\, like the man himself\, is literate\, passionate\, highly sensitive\, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail\, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart\, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs\, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again. \nResolutely independent\, Garnet Rogers has turned down offers from major labels to do his music his own way. \nMuch more at https://garnetrogers.com/?page_id=29026

SUMMARY:Winter Potpourri with Kirsten Manville
DESCRIPTION:LINDEN TREE COFFEEHOUSE’S 2022 WINTER POTPOURRI \nWith Kirsten Manville and Ten Other Area Performers.  SATURDAY\,  December 10 at 7:30 pm. \nLinden Tree Coffeehouse’s WINTER POTPOURRI is back for an evening of discovering new talent! on Saturday\, December 10th at 7:30 pm.  Ten New England singer-songwriters will play two songs each with hopes to be chosen to perform during next year’s season. Audience input will play a major part in the decision\, so please come down to help make the choice while enjoying new music and new faces.  The admission for this show is a suggested $10 which will be shared with the Wakefield Interfaith Food Pantry. \nFeaturing and hosting the show is Kirsten Manville\, a Wakefield based singer-songwriter who engages audiences with melodic and lyric-focused Americana music\, with a touch of blues and country.  Her songs have singable lyrics and memorable melodies that capture stories about every day life \, the ups and downs and in-betweens.  Her latest CD is “Blossoms in the Sun.”  It was a Top 5 pick in the September 2022 issue of Metronome Magazine. \nPerforming in this year’s potpourri are Ric Allendorf\, Dan & Faith\, Alex Fam\, Folkapotamus\, Rick Gottlieb\, Kenny Selcer\, Rob Siegel\, and Erin Ash Sullivan. This year’s talents come with noteable CDs and award credits. For a preview\, most of the contestents in our answer to THE VOICE have websites where you can listen to a tune or two. \nRic Allendorf Ric Allendorf is a Massachusetts native and award-winning singer-songwriter\, accomplished illustrator and Associate Professor at MassArt. Since writing his first song in 2014\, he has been a finalist and winner in multiple national songwriter competitions\, a feature at New England folk festivals and listening rooms including the legendary Club Passim\, and an opener for numerous acclaimed ‘main stage’ acts. His 2018 debut CD “Take It All In” continues to garner international radio play and an active gig schedule throughout New England.  He participated in the Maine Songwriter’s Association Annual Song Contest in 2021 and placed third for his original song\, “ Room for a Song.” In 2021\, Ric was featured in the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) ‘Folk DJ Emerging Artist Showcase’. \nDan and Faith are an award-winning\, New England-based husband and wife singer-songwriter duo who describe their music as dream-inspired folk. Daniel Senie (guitar\, banjo\, harmonica\, vocals) and Faith Senie (mandolin\, bass guitar\, dulcimer\, ukulele\, vocals) tap into dreams and everyday life in crafting their original songs. The duo has released five albums. The most recent three are available: Simple Grace (2014)\, Seeking (2016) and Then and Now (2020). The latest\, Then and Now\, reached #7 on the Folk DJ Chart in January 2020. \nAlex Fam is a spirited folk singer\, songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist whose lyric-driven songs invite listeners on a journey of reflection and joy.  She masterfully combines her vocals with violin\, and ukulele. She is the 2022 recipient of the UU Mass Action “Ruth Rowan Award\,” given to a person actively engaged in social justice and who motivates others to take action\, through music. \nFolkapotamus is a folk duo consisting of Penni Hart and Tony Trites who have been performing together since 2011. With beautiful melodies and lyrics\, the duo has performed an many coffeehouses and folk venues in New England and the Midwest. Their two full albums\, contain new compositions\, as well as classical folk songs and a favorite rock song sung in their own folky style. “River Slope Mine” . tells about a mining disaster in Pennsylvania which contrasts with “Road to Nowhere” that has a good time sitting on the porch playing music vibe. \nRick Gottlieb has been a musician for over 40 years\, playing songs of his favorite musicians and then writing some of his own\, influenced by David Wilcox and his use of non-standard tunings\, as well as Susan Werner\, and Jackson Browne. He claimsi his music speaks to the “babyboomers.” \nKenny Selcer is known for his sizzling blend of Americana folks\, rock\, roots\, and everything in between.  He will get your toe tapping\, brain thinking\, and maybe dancing in the aisle. Kenny is an engaging storyteller and inspired guitar player. Other musicians have described his recent LP as one that makes you feel good and contains a banquet of delicious sounds. \nRob Siegel is an innovative songwriter who draws from his idyllic yet stressed-out middle-class suburban existence and produces memorable\, intelligent\, well-crafted songs. His songs are fearless and truthful\, and connect with audiences because what’s deeply personal is often universal.  Rob says: “Some folks who live and breathe traditional folk music think I’m too wordy and too metaphor- and reference-heavy. What I try to be is challenging – somewhere between William Faulkner and Robin Williams. I don’t like songs that aren’t memorable\, and I try not to write them myself.” \nErin Ash Sullivan is a Massachusetts-based folk singer-songwriter who loves a good storytelling song. In 2021 she released her debut solo album\, We Can Hear Each Other\, which reached #10 on the FAI DJ Chart. In 2022\, she has been a Grassy Hill Emerging Artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, the recipient of the Mark Erelli Judge’s Choice Award in the New England Songwriting Competition\, and a Songwriter Serenade Semifinalist. Victor Infante of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette describes her music as “delicate and evocative” with songs full of “nuance and emotional resonance.” \nAdmission to  this special Linden Tree concert  is a suggested $10 donation\, cash or check at the door.  Please reserve your seats by calling 781-246-2836. SUMMARY:The Heather Pierson Trio — Rachel Marie opens
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for those age 18 and under. Visit oldslooppresents.org\, John Tarr Store in Rockport\, or The Bookstore of Gloucester. The suggested contribution at the door is $20 for adults\, $5 for those age 18 and under\, and $40 for families. \nPianist\, singer/songwriter\, song leader\, and performer Heather Pierson will bring her trio to Old Sloop Presents Saturday\, January 7. The performance will be in the handicap-accessible Fellowship Hall of the First Congregational Church of Rockport\, 12 School St. at 7:30pm. Boston singer-songwriter Rachel Marie will open the show. \nHeather Pierson’s music delves into Americana\, blues\, New Orleans jazz\, vocal chants\, instrumental piano\, and folk. Best known for her ease at the piano and her bell-tone vocals\, her songs and musicianship embody joy\, honesty\, playfulness\, and a desire to share from the heart. Defying genre and classification and yet fully embracing all musical styles\, Heather is an artist who speaks the language of music in as many dialects as her considerable abilities will allow. \nOpener Rachel Marie follows in a tradition of unapologetically forthright women folksingers. The social awareness of folk meets the introspection of the singer-songwriter tradition with a moderate dose of snark.

SUMMARY:First Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse Presents Gloucester Hornpipe and Clog Society on January 20th!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463\nContact: Geoff Tegnell \nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its fourth concert of the 2022-2023 season featuring the Gloucester Hornpipe and Clog Society in the Parish Hall at First Church and Parish Dedham\, 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, January 20\, 2023 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase. Tickets are $10 available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe Gloucester Hornpipe and Clog Society has been delighting audiences in New England for over forty years with Celtic\, maritime\, French Canadian\, and original songs and tunes.  The band’s repertoire especially features American Colonial-era tunes\, sing-along sea chanteys\, and original songs of colorful people and places from New England’s rich history. From ragtime to oldtime\, the band’s rollicking\, friendly style is fun for all ages. Nancy Koch plays accordion and guitar. She also sings boldly of pirates and other seagoing rascals\, yet creates lovely vocal harmonies on gorgeous\, slow ballads. Ben Bruno is on fiddle and guitar. He picked up the fiddle and hung up his electric guitar after discovering a love for traditional fiddle music. He has an insatiable thirst for learning new tunes and styles.  Linda Abrams has been playing melodic claw hammer banjo for over 40 years. Despite growing up listening to Pete Seeger and Earl Scruggs\, she ventured into playing the music of Ireland\, France and Quebec. Band co-founder David “Doc” Rosen is master of the age-old delights of the bodhrán (an Irish drum)\, spoons and bones. He also plays an unusual instrument that never fails to intrigue: the pogocello. From the traditions of the Swedish “Devil’s fiddle\,” eastern European polka percussion sticks\, and 18th and 19th century shipboard Fufu bands\, the pogocello is a mix of rhythm instrument and pogo-stick. It is not to be missed!  You’ll be inspired to tap your toes and sing along! \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes church choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and the Concerts at First Church concert series\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouses.

SUMMARY:Atwater-Donnelly Band - January 21\, 8 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:“To those who…deny the human spirit\, I give you these chroniclers of its joys and sorrows\, light and dark\, hope and despair and say that they have but liberated what is in us all. Their dancing notes say\, ‘Here it is! Humanity’s real self. Look! Isn’t it wondrous?”— From a poem written about Aubrey and Elwood\, “The Folk Singers” by Philip R. Pearson\, Jr. in his book Poetry is to be Consumed\, Vantage Press\, New York \n“I almost fainted when you sang and danced and played the banjo at the same time! My mouth was droped (sic) open the entire time.”— 4th graders\, Chaplin Elementary School\, Chaplin\, CT \nThe Atwater-Donnelly Band performs a unique and thrilling blend of traditional American and Celtic folk music and percussive dance. Elwood Donnelly\, Aubrey Atwater\, Cathy Clasper-Torch\, and Erin Lobb Mason blend beautiful vocals and play guitar\, mountain dulcimer\, banjo\, fiddle\, cello\, bass\, whistle\, harmonica\, limberjacks\, and other surprises including freestyle Appalachian clogging and French Canadian footwork. \nThe performance is appealing to all ages and with a relaxed stage presence\, Aubrey\, Elwood\, Cathy\, and Erin explain song\, instrument\, and dance origins to give more relevance to the material. Separately and together\, these performers have received numerous accolades and have produced many recordings and books which will be available at the performance.
