SUMMARY:Brooks Williams - Matt Rich & Gil Clark open
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for those age 18 and under. Visit oldslooppresents.org\, John Tarr Store in Rockport\, or The Bookstore of Gloucester. The suggested contribution at the door is $20 for adults\, $5 for those age 18 and under\, and $40 for families. \nTickets and more information\nBrooks Williams is one of those select few ‘’how on earth does he do it?” artists. He can sing. He can write. And\, man oh man\, can he play guitar. \nCambridge UK-based\, Statesboro\, Georgia US-born\, admired by both listeners and fellow musicians\, Brooks Williams has been a leading light on the acoustic music scene for three decades. FATEA says his performances show “the greatest level of true expertise.” \nListed as one of the ‘Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists\,’ his guitar skills are evident as he effortlessly slides in and out of folk\, blues and country. “He was playing Americana before it had been given the name\,” says CMP . “How soulful a solo guitarist can be when he has talent\, taste and astonishing technique\,” writes Blues Revue. \nWilliams left his Georgia home in his late teens and moved to Boston at the height of the 1990’s acoustic music renaissance. He did his apprenticeship in the bars and clubs in New York and New England and cut his teeth supporting artists like Shawn Colvin\, Chris Smither\, Rory Block\, Leo Kottke\, Odetta\, Billy Bragg and Taj Mahal. \nHis first album\, North From Statesboro\, caught the attention of The Washington Post and National Public Radio\, which set the ball rolling and Williams never looked back. People took notice and acoustic music radio played him from the very beginning\, including WUMB-FM in Boston\, where Williams is one of their Top 100 Artists Of All-Time. \nIn subsequent years he has released a staggering 34 recordings in 35 years for labels like Green Linnet Records\, Solid Air Records\, Signature Sounds and Reveal\, including Diamond Days\, his latest\, which At The Barrier calls a “stunning collection from the chocolate-voiced\, guitar maestro.” \nNever one to shy away from the road\, the list of venues and festivals Brooks Williams has played is staggering. Newport\, Winnipeg\, Cropredy\, Cambridge\, Philadelphia\, are but a few of many. \nMates in the bands Northwest Fox and Backshore 500\, Mat Rich and Gil Clark have been musical collaborators since middle school. Matt now holds the Fly Amero chair at the Rhumb Line in Gloucester\, hosting musical guests every Wednesday evening\, and Gil is a frequent invitee.

SUMMARY:James Keelaghan with David Woodhead
DESCRIPTION:Admission: $30 (17 and under free)\nParking can be tricky – check this map!  parking guidance \nYou can pay with cash at the door or purchase advance tickets. \nContemporary folk songs\, at their very best\, offer an insight into the hardships\, attitudes\, and resolve of characters and events that shape our day-to-day lives. You can dress these songs up in inspired arrangements and intricate instrumentation but\, at their very essence\, the archetypal folk song is all about stories. Stories and people. Something such compelling songwriters as Eric Bogle\, Si Kahn\, Ewan MacColl\, and Stan Rogers … all understood and mined so effectively. \nJames Keelaghan\, too\, burrows into that same rich seam with equal ability and comparable conviction. To quote Eric Bibb\, the award-winning American acoustic bluesman\, after listening to Keelaghan perform: “[You’re] a joy to hear\, just beautiful.  Reminded me of the best of the best of another time – Liam Clancy\, Tom Paxton etcetera.” Less colourful but more succinct\, Dave Marsh\, the eminent Rolling Stone critic\, simply described Keelaghan as “Canada’s finest songwriter.” \nTruly\, throughout a career that now spans almost four decades\, the Juno and Canadian Folk Music Award winner has created a repertoire of incalculable importance – a unique body of work\, either inspired by or drawn from the folk tradition. Ten solo albums flush with enduring lyrical relevance. Take the beautiful but heartbreaking ballad\, Jenny Bryce\, for example. From any point of view\, it’s indistinguishable from the numerous traditional tracks covered on his disc A Few Simple Verses. \nWhat’s more\, various other originals from the Keelaghan cannon  must surely enter the domain of traditional folklore. Most notably\, Small Rebellions (highlighting the 1931 slaughter of peaceful striking miners in Bienfait\, SK); Hillcrest Mine (a prelude to the worst coal mining disaster in Canadian history); Kiri’s Piano (a triumph over adversity amidst the shameful\, racist treatment of Japanese-Canadians during WW II); Cold Missouri Waters (a harrowing portrait of the 1949 Mann Gulch Fire in the mountains of Montana) … \nA relentless musical spirit\, Keelaghan has surrounded himself with a variety of crackerjack companions down through the years that have largely included the late\, innovative\, free-spirited fiddler and composer\, Oliver Schroer\, the exuberant\, Chilean\, Latino-fusionist guitarist\, Oscar Lopez (with whom Keelaghan made two albums under the banner of Compadres)\, or the ubiquitous\, former Spirit of the West anchor and multi-instrumentalist\, Hugh MacMillan. Scrupulous audiences from Alberta to Australia bared witness to the sum of these resourceful parts. \nJames Keelaghan grew up in a bungalow in northwest Calgary\, AB\, with six siblings\, an Irish father\, and an English mum. His brother Bob would develop into a noteworthy guitarist with the excellent\, but now defunct\, Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir. From his father\, Jim\, James developed a love of history. The family record collection provided further inspiration. Traditional folk LPs by the likes of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem\, Séan Ó Riada\, and Harry Belafonte certainly caught young Keelaghan’s ear. He still cites Belafonte At Carnegie Hall as a recording that changed his life at age six! \nAppearing on over 250 recording projects\, bass player David Woodhead has worked with many influential artists including Perth County Conspiracy\, Stan Rogers\, Don Ross\, Oliver Schroer\, Loreena McKennitt\, Gil Scott-Heron\, Steve Rodby\, and David Sanborn. David has been described as “that musician who leads from in front and behind as the situation demands and seems happiest planting various challenges and musical surprises in a spirit of playfulness.” (Jowi Taylor\, CBC radio host)

SUMMARY:David Wilcox
DESCRIPTION:QUOTES \nWilcox has been crafting well written songs for decades while also bringing them to life on stage.\n…The Anniston Star \nA lot of David Wilcox’s fans consider him a musical minister\, his songs providing spiritual grounding as they rhyme and dance.\n…The Hippo \n  \nABOUT \nDavid Wilcox | Official Biography \nThere are songwriters who chronicle life\, and then there’s David Wilcox—an artist who metabolizes it. He has long been a quiet force in American folk music; a musician’s musician\, a writer’s writer\, and a seeker whose gift lies in making the personal feel universal. \nWith the upcoming release of The Way I Tell the Story (2025)\, Wilcox proves\, yet again\, that resilience isn’t just a survival skill—it’s an art form. The record shimmers with musical sophistication but leaves just enough space for the listener to feel what Wilcox has always done best: tell the truth\, gently but without apology. \nThe music he’s creating now comes from a place that can’t be faked. In recent years\, Wilcox’s life has been shaped by his wife’s Parkinson’s diagnosis—a shift that reordered his priorities and redefined his sense of time\, love\, and presence. But rather than retreat\, Wilcox leaned in. “Times get tough\, and music gets good\,” he says\, and means it. These songs don’t dramatize. They don’t resolve neatly. They sit in the complexity of living—open-eyed\, unafraid\, quietly brave. \nWilcox’s career began in earnest in the late 1980s\, when his self-released debut The Nightshift Watchman caught the attention of A&M Records. His major-label debut\, How Did You Find Me Here (1989)\, became an unexpected hit\, selling over 100\,000 copies largely by word of mouth and live shows alone—an unheard-of feat for a debut folk record. Critics took note of his deft guitar work and emotional clarity\, but it was the unassuming wisdom threaded through his lyrics that truly set him apart. Rolling Stone praised his “soulful insight\,” while The New York Times called his music “a kind of open-hearted therapy.” \nWhat followed was a string of acclaimed albums—Big Horizon (1994)\, Turning Point (1997)\, What You Whispered (2000)—each one refining his reputation as a songwriter who knows how to say hard things in soft\, lasting ways. Over the years\, he’s shared stages and collaborations with artists like Shawn Colvin\, Patty Larkin\, Pierce Pettis\, and John Gorka—fellow craftspeople committed to song over spectacle. But Wilcox has never followed the current. He’s followed the work\, and in 2018 Wilcox won top honors in the 23rd annual USA Songwriting for his effervescent “We Make the Way by Walking” from his album\, The View From the Edge. \nThat work has earned him quiet but enduring respect. His songs have been covered by k.d. lang and Tony Rice; his guitar work studied by those who understand that precision\, when rooted in care\, becomes its own kind of virtuosity. His influence runs deep\, especially among younger artists trying to build something real in a world obsessed with surface. \nWilcox’s music still resonates\, especially now\, because it doesn’t try to outpace the moment. It meets it. In his world\, craft is a form of care. Introspection is a public offering. And staying soft in a hard world isn’t a liability—it’s a kind of leadership. \nfor much more info – https://www.davidwilcox.com/ \n

SUMMARY:Ellis Paul
DESCRIPTION:Way back in the early 2000s\, we first hosted Ellis Paul at our venue at Slater Mill Historic Site. It was a night to remember\, as he was becoming a known entity in the singer-songwriter world of folk\, and we had never had the opportunity to bring him to Stone Soup Coffeehouse. In a quick conversation\, after a great night of music\, he told me he had been trying to get a gig at our coffeehouse for a few of years. I responded that I had only recently started booking\, and thanks to the recommendation of his agent\, I was so glad to be given the opportunity to bring him to Stone Soup. And that begins our history with Ellis Paul and the many years he has returned to play on a Stone Soup stage\, whether at Slater Mill\, St. Paul’s Church or now at the beautiful Music Mansion in Providence. The show begins at 7 pm on Saturday\, November 8\, 2025. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased in advance on our website. Please note\, this show could sell out\, so purchase your tickets early.  \nParking at The Music Mansion at 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906 is limited and carpooling\, ride-sharing\, and mass transit are highly encouraged. There is also available parking on Benefit Street\, a short set of stairs will lead you right up to the Music Mansion.  \nABOUT THE ARTIST:  \nEllis Paul doesn’t just write songs; he’s a guitar-carrying reporter who covers the human condition and details the hopes\, loves\, losses of those he observes\, turning their stories into luminous pieces of music that get under your skin and into your bloodstream. And much like the artists who have influenced him\, everyone from Joni Mitchell\, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon to the singer-songwriter who is undoubtedly his greatest inspiration\, Woody Guthrie\, Paul weaves deeply personal experiences with social issues and renders them as provocative works that are as timely as they are timeless.  \nBorn and raised in Maine\, Paul attended Boston College on a track scholarship and in the evenings became a fixture on the city’s open mic circuit. After winning a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriter competition\, he caught the ear of folk luminary Bill Morrissey\, who produced his indie album Say Something in 1993. This led to a seven-album contract with Rounder Records and the 1994 album\, Stories. His songs have appeared  \nin several blockbuster films (Me\, Myself\, and Irene; Shallow Hal\, Hall Pass) and have been covered by award winning country artists (Sugarland\, Kristian Bush\, Jack Ingram). Through a steady succession of albums of his own – a remarkable 23 releases so far – and a constant touring presence around the world\, Paul’s audience has grown into a loyal legion of fans.  \nAlong the way\, he has picked up an impressive number of awards including the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award\, 15 Boston Music Awards\, An Honorary Doctorate from the University of Maine\, the 2019 International Acoustic Music Awards Artist of the Year and most recently his album\, The Storyteller’s Suitcase\, was named the 2019 NERFA Album of the Year. His new album “55” touches on the necessity of gratitude in a difficult era of the pandemic and divided political stances on his own imprint\, Rosella Records www.ellispaul.com  \nPhil Hoffman described Ellis so: “The storyteller closes his suitcase\, but the worlds within it keep changing\, the traveler keeps moving on\, and brand new vistas keep opening up with each twist and turn in the road. From Maine to Big Sur\, Okemah to Homer\, Alaska\, from hardscrabble rustbelt towns to peachy Georgia\, from the plains of Texas to the snows of Alberta\, these lands are our lands. This land is his land.“Born in Okemah shoes\, with the Dust Bowl blues\, a friend of the working man\,” was how Willis Alan Ramsey described Woody Guthrie\, a description that doubles to perfectly situate Ellis Paul’s exploration of the fractured\, kaleidoscopic landscape of America’s soul. Ellis Paul shares his land with us. And in sharing it with us\, the truth he reveals is that it is also ours.”  \nWe hope you will join us because Ellis has certainly become a national treasure over the past 30+ years that he has been performing\, and he is truly one of those artists you do not want to miss.

SUMMARY:Barnaby Bright at Harmony on the Green in Lexington\, MA
DESCRIPTION:Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse Concerts continues its 4th season with the Kansas City based Barnaby Bright. Not easily defined\, Barnaby Bright is an alt-Americana trio with contemporary influences that reflect their geographical journey from Brooklyn to Nashville to Kansas\, while calling on Nathan’s Oklahoma roots and distant relation to Merle Haggard. The band has accumulated a dedicated following that feeds on their ability to spin storytelling into sonic treasures- a BB show will take audiences on a ride through love songs\, murder ballads and deeply moving\, relatable themes. The most commonly uttered phrase at the end of a show seems to be\, “that was a spiritual experience.” \nNathan’s virtuosic acoustic guitar & banjo playing and Becky’s effortless soaring vocals over the drone of the harmonium are pushing the boundaries of today’s indie folk landscape. \nThe Kansas City based duo spent a decade touring and making records before recently adding Carmen Dieker to the band. The blend of their three part harmonies and Carmen’s haunting fiddle and violin-playing add an element to shows that fans of the band never knew they had been wanting. \nBarnaby Bright received the grand prize at NYC’s prestigious Songwriter’s Circle\, were elected to Amazon’s Top 100 Albums of the Year\, and most recently their Christmas album was picked by the New York Times as one of the Top 20 Christmas Albums of the Year\, with 5 of the songs being featured in the Netflix hit TV show\, Sex/Life. \nWhile opening for illustrious acts such as Norah Jones and The Lumineers\, Barnaby Bright continues to mesmerize audiences and convert new followers one show at a time while raising awareness of Kansas City’s diverse landscape.

SUMMARY:Open Mic Night at The Music Mansion
DESCRIPTION:Over the last couple years we have tried a lot of things on our open mic stage. In Season 42\, we held workshops for developing musicians. in Season 43\, we invited hosts of other open mics around the state to feature on our stage. We trained new sound engineers only to forgo all the tech. It’s now musicians and audiences in a room together – a room designed for music to flow and flourish. \nEd Dean returns as our open mic host\, opening the doors to The Music Mansion. It’s a welcoming environment for beginners\, new artists\, and veteran local musicians. The Open Mic Series is one of the ways we practice what we preach and Ed is an  incredible minister for this community. Hope to see you there.

DESCRIPTION:“Duvekot has gotten hotter\, faster than any local songwriter in recent memory. Her songs feel at once fresh faced and firmly rooted\, driven by the whispery sensuality of her voice. SUMMARY:Th Nields
DESCRIPTION:QUOTES:\nImagine if Natalie Merchant had a sister with an equally good voice singing perfect harmony with her…intimate and electric.\n-Sing Out! Magazine\nThe marvelously expressive Katryna and Nerissa Nields provide vocals sounding at various times very much like the Bangles\, the Roches and …Alanis Morrissette…a delightful discovery.\n-Chicago Tribune \nBIO: \nThe Nields is a folk-rock band that started in 1991. As a five-piece band\, they toured much of the United States\, performing with artists such as Dar Williams\, Moxy Früvous\, 10\,000 Maniacs\, Ani DiFranco and Catie Curtis and appeared at many folk festivals. (Wikipedia) \nWhat’s A Nields?\nThe Nields story begins with the two sisters. Nerissa and Katryn a grew up singing folk songs in the kitchen and in the back seat of the family car. Katryna learned to sing melody with their father\, eventually making her an ideal front person for the band. Nerissa\, on the other hand\, tackled the harmonies; with that skill\, she provided a natural counterpoint to her sister’s vibrant lead. “I knew I wanted to be a singer and songwriter from the time I was 7\,” explains Nerissa. “I remember I wrote my first song that I was really proud of when I was 13\, and right away I had a harmony for it\, so I dragged Katryna out of her room and taught her the harmony. It was instinct — I knew that my sister should be there.” \nIn the late ’80s\, Nerissa and Katryna met a graduate student named David Jones\, who had always longed for a career in music. Playing acoustic guitar through an electric pedal board\, he joined the sisters as they played open mics in the Washington\, DC area. Later\, he married Nerissa and took HER last name (“Just like the Ramones!\,” he said). \nTo read more\, go to: \nhttps://nields.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Whats-a-Nields_2014.pdf

SUMMARY:The Kennedys - Nov. 15\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Kennedys release their first CD of all newly minted original songs in five years! \n“If you get a charge from a rich folk rock vibe\, love a super sharp guitar lick\, or appreciate a moving story song\, you will find all of that on The Kennedy’s Headwinds. Pete Kennedy’s astonishing range on any guitar he touches deftly underpins every mood of Maura Kennedy’s warm\, lyrical voice. You’ll get no resistance from these Headwinds\, only pleasure.” \n– Marilyn Rea Beyer\, Host\, WFMT’s The Midnight Special & Folkstage \nSongwriting duo Pete and Maura Kennedy make a strong return to the studio and stage after three years of weekly live-streamed lockdown-era concerts. They took the opportunity to explore classic songwriting in depth\, performing over a thousand songs during the pandemic. That vast overview strengthened and refined their own writing and laid the foundation for this new collection of original\, socially-conscious songs. \n“After such a deep dive into American roots music\, we felt like we had a new set of writing tools. We were ready to create this body of work\, and there’s just SO much to write about\,” says Maura. “During our five-year hiatus from writing and recording\, America changed in massive ways\, divisive ways that have shaken our whole foundation. That has to be addressed by creative artists\, those of us who have a voice to speak for others. Our love of the great things about this country\, things that are under threat\, is the reason we decided to make “Headwinds” the title track of the CD. Political and social headwinds are making it hard to get back “home’ to our greatness as a nation. We want to push back in a positive way against those winds.” \nIn addition to singing and writing\, Pete and Maura are multi-instrumentalists. The thirteen songs are cast in a soundscape that draws from the classic canon of American roots\, in keeping with the theme of getting back “home” as a nation. Acoustic and electric guitars\, a vintage steel guitar\, a gospel-inflected piano/organ mix\, and even a slide ukulele all add colors to a songbag of sounds that have drawn us together during hard times. Pete and Maura believe that those sounds still have the power to pull us through again. \nThe Kennedys began their writing and touring life three decades ago as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, developing their own sound as a frequent support act on Nanci’s tours across America\, Ireland\, Scotland and England. Collaborations with Nanci continued\, culminating in Pete and Maura producing her final album\, “Intersections.” Along the way\, they hosted a nationwide radio program\, “The Dharma Cafe” on Sirius/XM\, wrote and released sixteen CDs of original music\, and have been core artists on folk radio\, expanding their audience further with the inception of the AAA and Americana formats.
