SUMMARY:Claudia Nygaard
DESCRIPTION:Unless the weather is unusually warm for early March (not impossible this winter) this concert will be indoors in the hosts’ living room with capacity limited to 30. The suggested contribution is $20\, payable by cash\, check\, or Venmo at the door. Send an email to whalecoveproductions@gmail.com for information about how to attend. \nClaudia Nygaard is a mesmerizing storyteller and a cinematic lyricist who writes songs that are heartfelt\, humorous\, scrappy\, and sensual\, And she does so with a daredevil’s vulnerability and a complete lack of self-censorship. Nygaard\, with her powerful\, resonant\, and deeply emotive amber honey voice\, is a master at putting a tear in your eye with a song that breaks your heart\, and then with a quick wit and an outlandish sense of humor\, she’ll replace it with tears of laughter. \nBuilding on the craft she learned while a staff songwriter on Nashville’s Music Row\, she has won numerous awards including the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival Songwriting Competition\, and with the title cut of her latest album “Lucky Girl”\, the Tumbleweed Music Festival Songwriting Competition. “Lucky Girl” charted at #3 on the Folk Alliance Radio song chart and #5 on the album chart\, and gave her a significant debut on the Americana chart. It also received impressive reviews from the press. Legendary folk music magazine “Sing Out” claimed the songs “rival the likes of Guy Clark or Ian Tyson”.

SUMMARY:Heather Maloney in Concert
DESCRIPTION:The New Revival Coffeehouse will present renowned vocalist Heather Maloney at a live concert on Saturday\, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. \nThe Massachusetts-based “writer song-singer” found music in the midst of three years at a meditation center\, honing a sound moored in days of silent reflection and reverence for storytellers like Joni\, Rilke\, Ken Burns\, and the anonymous authors of Zen parables.  \nAnd while she eventually traded the quiet\, structured life as a yogi for the kinetic life a touring musician\, the core of her songwriting remains centered around the same curiosity about our inner world and the desire to articulate it through storytelling. \nHeather has toured nationally as a headliner as well as in support of acts like Lake Street Dive\, Shakey Graves\, Gary Clark Jr.\, Colin Hay\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, and many more. The New York Times called her music “utterly gorgeous\, visceral” and SPIN Magazine described her as “stunning\, breathy\, and starkly memorable.” \nAfter over 1\,000 live shows and more than a decade of touring\, Heather Maloney released her first live album\, “No Shortcuts-Live at the Academy” in June. Recorded with a soaring string quartet\, No Shortcuts is a recording of the interaction\, presence and joy that only unfolds in real time\, when real live music and real live people share a real live space together. \nAs well as a songwriter and performer\, Heather is an illustrator and linocut artist who carves and prints visual representations of her songs on a variety of mediums. She considers the integration of music and art to be an inspiring new chapter as a creative person. \nThe New Revival Coffeehouse is at First Parish Church of Stow and Acton\, 353 Great Road in Stow MA 01775.  Tickets are $17 in advance at eventbrite.com and $20 the day of the concert. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:30.  Masks are optional. \nFor more information\, see heathermaloney.com \n  \n

SUMMARY:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham Presents Lorraine and Bennett Hammond!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell \nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its sixth concert of the 2022-2023 season featuring the Lorraine and Bennet Hammond att First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, March 17\, 2023 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $10 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nLorraine Lee Hammond grew up in rural New England when ballads and barn dances were part of community life.  Her many credits as a traditional singer\, songwriter\, teacher\, and multi-instrumentalist include two Appalachian dulcimer books with Yellow Moon Press\, and numerous recordings. A former lecturer in American Folk Music and World Music at Lasell University in Newton\, MA\, she helped to launch the first UMass Boston\, WUMB radio Summer Acoustic Music Week in 1996\, and retired as music director at the close of 2022.  She and Bennett continue to teach in the program as they have done from its inception. Bennett Hammond is a superb finger-style guitarist and recent convert to the five-string banjo. He names “the three Bs\,” Bach\, the blues and Buddy Holly\, as major influences.  Bennett’s songwriting gained traction during the pandemic with his “Mean ol’ Quarantine” blues. \nTogether\, The Hammonds are versatile musicians\, engaging entertainers\, and fun teachers. Their warm stage presence is punctuated with wry humor\, and their command of their instruments and musical genres is without flaw. The Boston Globe calls them “a dazzling\, witty\, eclectic\, delightful duo.” The Hammond’s repertoire ranges in style from traditional Celtic and American songs and ballads through blues and contemporary music. They sing both traditional and original songs and can be heard on over thirty recordings as featured artists or enhancing the work of other performers. They make their home in Brookline\, Massachusetts. \n“The Hammonds are folk missionaries of the first order\, devoted cultural activists\, teachers\, event organizers\, and performers who love to introduce people to the joys of traditional music.” – Boston Globe \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and the Concerts at First Church Saturday classical concert series\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events.

SUMMARY:Le Vent du Nord
DESCRIPTION:“Quebec five-piece Le Vent Du Nord\, who still sound like a breath of fresh air after two decades of touring their rollicking dance music around the world…”\n— BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE (UK) (Jon Lusk) \nThe award winning and highly acclaimed band Le Vent du Nord are a leading force in Québec’s exciting and progressive Francophone folk movement. The group’s vast repertoire draws from both traditional sources and original compositions\, while their highly rhythmic and soulful music\, rooted in the Celtic diaspora\, is enhanced with a broad range of global influences. \nSince first launching 20 years ago (in August 2002)\, Le Vent du Nord have enjoyed meteoric success\, performing well over 2\,200 concerts over 4 continents and racking up several prestigious awards\, including a Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros\, two Junos (Canada’s Grammys)\, a Félix at ADISQ\, a Canadian Folk Music Award\, and “Artist of the Year” at Folk Alliance Annual Gala. \nThe group regularly appear on Canadian\, American\, French\, and UK television and radio and have participated in a wide variety of special musical projects that exhibit their great finesse and flexibility. They’ve collaborated and performed with a diverse range of artists including: Harry Manx\, Väsen\, Dervish\, The Chieftains\, Breton musical pioneer Yann-Fañch Kemener\, Québécois roots legend and master storyteller Michel Faubert\, the Scottish folk band Breabach\, Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis\, and the trans-Mediterranean ensemble Constantinople. \nLe Vent du Nord look beyond the standard approaches to tradition in their collaborations and they’ve also created a symphonic concert that\, according to Voir Montreal\, “puts all traditional folk naysayers to shame.” \nOn stage these five friends create intense\, joyful and dynamic live performances that expand the bounds of tradition in striking global directions. This is the modern sound of tradition\, a music of the here and now.” \nhttps://leventdunord.com/en/the-band/

SUMMARY:Steel Wheels
DESCRIPTION:“The Steel Wheels are certainly not the first band to use bluegrass music as a springboard to dive into a rainbow of possibilities\, but they are certainly among the best that do.”   — TOM CLARKE: Tahoe Onstage \nThe Steel Wheels have long been at home in the creative space between tradition and innovation\, informed by the familiar sounds of the Virginia mountains where the band was formed\, but always moving forward with insightful lyrics and an evolving sound. In 2005\, Jay Lapp (vocals\, guitars\, mandolin) and Eric Brubaker (vocals\, fiddle) joined lead singer Trent Wagler (guitar\, banjo) in forming the band as a vehicle for Wagler’s songwriting. They released several albums under Wagler’s moniker\, before officially adopting the The Steel Wheels name with the 2010 release of Red Wing. Quickly staking their claim as independent upstarts in the burgeoning Americana scene\, The Steel Wheels followed up this release with three more self-produced albums in the next five years\, before joining forces with producer Sam Kassirer for Wild As We Came Here (2017) and Over The Trees (2019). Kevin Garcia (drums\, percussion\, keys) joined in 2017\, bringing a new level of sonic depth and polish to the outfit. Newest member Jeremy Darrow rounds out the rhythm section and grounds the band as they continue to explore deeply rooted yet fresh folk rock sounds. Having gained the experience of thousands of shows\, festivals and many miles on the road\, the stubbornly independent band has formed deep bonds with each other and the audience that sustains them. \nThe Steel Wheels have responded to this time of isolation and loss by seeking to connect with their audience in new ways. In 2020\, unable to perform their rootsy brand of Americana for crowds in live settings\, the musicians turned their creative powers to crafting songs for individuals. Produced in isolation in the band’s home studios\, the Everyone a Song albums are part of an ongoing project to collect the personal experiences of fans and forge them into that most enduring\, yet ephemeral\, format we call “song.” An accompanying podcast\, We Made You a Song\, explores the stories behind these songs\, and the songwriting process itself. While each song was commissioned to honor a specific relationship or event—a birth\, a wedding\, a memory of home—the emotions evoked are universal. \nNowhere is this shared humanity more evident than at the band’s own Red Wing Roots Music Festival\, a weekend-long celebration of music\, community\, and the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Hosted by The Steel Wheels every summer\, the festival provides a space for the band to shine\, from their high energy Saturday night main stage set to their afternoon showcase with young Red Wing Academy students. At Sunday’s gospel hour you are as likely to hear Steel Wheels originals or Warren Zevon covers as you are traditional gospel fare. The weekend is rounded out by the beloved tribute set in which the band collaborates with a cadre of fellow artists to honor an influential figure in American music\, with past tributes ranging from Dolly Parton to John Prine. \nWhether at a joyous summer festival\, in their many shows across the country and beyond\, or in the studio\, The Steel Wheels continue their mission set out over a decade ago; shaking up traditions to see what sticks\, telling stories\, and joining communities through song. https://www.thesteelwheels.com/bio

SUMMARY:Dave Gunnings
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to bring Dave Gunning back to the Monadnock Region. He last played at Deb’s House Concerts. His Bass Hall\, 2020 concert was cancelled due to the pandemic. \nDave Gunning is best defined as a master craftsman. Over the course of 25 years and 11 earlier albums\, the Nova Scotian folk singer/songwriter has diligently sharpened his skills\, developing into a poetic storyteller and emotionally convincing singer with few equals.\n\nWith a career spanning over two decades\, Dave Gunning is one of Canada’s folk music treasures – a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter who has earned multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards\, a Juno nomination and nine East Coast Music Awards for his well-crafted work. Dave has gained a reputation for being a great storyteller and engaging performer who has the profound ability to take listeners on a musical journey through his songs. Much of his material is about the underdogs\, heroes\, family\, the heart and reflects the messaging of social justice and carrying about the world around us. The fruits of those labours are now vividly on display on his latest collection of songs\, “Up Against The Sky”. \nAlong with richly-deserved peer respect\, Dave Gunning has earned a shelf full of music industry honours. That tally currently stands at eight East Coast Music Awards and two Canadian Folk Music Awards\, plus a 2012 Juno Award nomination in the Roots & Traditional Solo Album of the Year category for his album … a tribute to John Allan Cameron\, a compelling homage to another of Dave’s Maritime musical heroes. Dave’s 2019 release\, “Up Against The Sky” was recognized with four 2020 Canadian Folk Music Award nominations; two East Coast Music Awards\, a Canadian Independent Music Video Award; and an International Folk Music Award nomination. His efforts have attracted strong media and radio airplay support\, charting as the #1 most played Canadian and International ‘Artist’ & the #2 ‘Album’ on the US folk DJ Charts (October 2019). Dave has toured extensively across Canada\, the USA\, the UK\, Ireland and Australia delighting audiences wherever he performs. \nDave’s 12th studio album\, The Same Storm was released Oct 28\, 2022.   \nmuch more at:  https://davegunning.com/\, https://www.facebook.com/davegunning/ \nHis well-crafted material is simultaneously poetic and rooted in reality\, and is delivered via emotion.

SUMMARY:Friday Folk Coffeehouse Presents the Doppelgangers at 7:30 PM on Friday\, April 21!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell\nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its seventh concert of the 2022-2023 season featuring the The Doppelgängers at First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, April 21\, 2023 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $10 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe Doppelgängers \, Kenny Raskin and RF Berks\, make their triumphant return to the Church\, having played the Folk Coffeehouse inaugural concert in 2022. They will have just returned from Colombia\, where they were invited to play at the Sonida Selva Music Festival in Minca and record a live album. The two men met in 2015 at the Maine Fiddle Camp\, where they soon found out that many people at the camp thought they were brothers. The deal was sealed when RF’s daughter mistook Kenny for her father. Thus\, the Doppelgängers were born. \nBoth RF and Kenny have had their own musical careers as singer/songwriters\, but revel in the camaraderie of playing together. Their style is Americana\, with a touch of swing as well. While their careers have been different\, their love of acoustic music and singing harmony has brought them together and found them playing everywhere from living rooms to music festivals. \nKenny was 8 years old when his father’s friend Harry gave him a ukulele. He played that ukulele until 11 years old. Then he discovered girls\, and promptly bought a guitar. That ukulele\, however\, was the gateway into a fifty-year plus love affair with playing music on multiple instruments\, including banjo\, mandolin and bass.  In 2018\, Kenny released his debut CD\, MY GREATEST HITS!\, and in 2022 released his second CD\, Peace of Mind. He is also known internationally as an accomplished actor and theatre clown\, having appeared on Broadway and with Cirque du Soleil\, as well as on television and variety stages in the US\, France\, England\, Chile\, Germany and China. \nRF Berks found a Sears guitar in the attic when he was 15 and began carrying it everywhere he went. Whenever he met a kid that could play a song or guitar lick he would make them show him how it worked until eventually he learned enough to form a band. He learned most of what he knows about music long before he studied and obtained a degree in the subject. He has been writing songs – over one hundred – for twenty plus years\, and in 2019 he released an album entitled TREAT ME WELL\, which can be found on the usual streaming platforms. It was an eclectic mix of musical styles with contributing musicians from around the world. Francis is also an accomplished poet. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and the Concerts at First Church Saturday classical concert series\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events. \n

SUMMARY:Paul Rishell and Annie Raines\, April 22\,2023
DESCRIPTION:For 29 years Paul Rishell & Annie Raines have been hailed as one of the world’s best blues duos. They have recorded 6 albums together including the W.C. Handy Award-winning Moving to the Country (2000)\, and received numerous award nominations from the Blues Foundation. They have performed and recorded with John Sebastian\, Susan Tedeschi\, Pinetop Perkins and Rory Block. They have opened for Ray Charles\, Dr. John\, and Little Feat\, and performed on international radio and TV shows including Late Night with Conan O’Brien and A Prairie Home Companion. They continue to perform American roots music and their own compositions at festivals\, concert halls\, and clubs all over the world. As a working team\, Paul and Annie have racked up hundreds of thousands of miles on the road in the U.S. and Europe\, collaborated on original songs\, and released the Blues Foundation Award nominated TALKING GUITAR \, I WANT YOU TO KNOW (Tone-Cool/Artemis 1996)\, MOVING TO THE COUNTRY (2000)\, the W.C. Handy Award winner for Acoustic Blues Album of the Year\, and GOIN’ HOME (2004)\, which was nominated for two Handy Awards. \nPaul Rishell and Annie Raines’s sixth project together\, TALKING GUITAR was released in 2012 and received 2 Nominations for the Blues Foundation’s Blues Music Awards. It features Paul returning to the bare essence of country blues\, with stunning solo performances of gems by Lead Belly\, Blind Boy Fuller\, Skip James and others\, with Annie joining in on a few tunes. It is stark\, stripped down and intimate. Their previous album\, the live recording “A NIGHT IN WOODSTOCK” was released in 2008 as a CD and in 2009 as a DVD on their own Mojo Rodeo label\, and distributed internationally by Burnside Distribution\, each release earning multiple Blues Music Award nominations. The live concert features special guests John Sebastian\, Bruce Katz\, and Paul and Annie’s own backing band joining the duo for an eclectic\, high-energy set of acoustic and electric originals and classic blues songs. The DVD includes extra features such as artist biographies\, video guitar lessons and audio commentary by Rishell\, Raines and Sebastian. \n  \nPaul and Annie are equally passionate about their craft and devoted to the study and performance of a wide range of blues styles\, from the syncopated acoustic guitar wizardry of Blind Lemon Jefferson and Son House to Chicagoan “Little” Walter Jacob’s swinging amplified harmonica. Paul has reached what Boston Phoenix writer Ted Drozdowski called “a place deep and resonant as Robert Johnson’s crossroads\, where authenticity\, soul\, and a sense of purpose and commitment ring out in every note he sings and plays.” Annie has added vocals\, mandolin\, piano\, and other instruments to her musical arsenal\, while being recognized by top professionals and fans worldwide as the “queen of the blues harmonica.” Says blues legend Pinetop Perkins\, “She plays so good it hurts!” \nTouring internationally at festivals\, clubs\, and concert halls\, and teaching workshops and seminars\, Paul Rishell & Annie Raines have earned loyal fans around the globe. Paul and Annie are featured in the new jug band music documentary\, Chasin’ Gus’ Ghost\, which debuted at the San Francisco Film Festival in August 2007. They have performed on diverse radio and TV shows including A Prairie Home Companion\, Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, and PBS’s Arthur. They have performed and recorded with Susan Tedeschi\, John Sebastian\, Pinetop Perkins\, and Rory Block. Susan Tedeschi recorded an “unplugged” version of Paul’s Blues on a Holiday with Paul and Annie for her 2003 release\, Wait For Me. \nAnnie Raines was born in 1969 in Boston and grew up in the suburb of Newton\, Massachusetts. She picked up the blues harp at 17 and made her stage debut at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge a few months before her high school graduation. Enthralled by the recordings of Muddy Waters\, Little Walter Jacobs\, Big Walter Horton and Sonny Boy Williamson\, she became a fixture at Boston area blues jams. She briefly attended Antioch College and 1988 interned with Washington\, DC homeless rights activist Mitch Snyder\, who persuaded her to drop out of school to pursue her musical career. One of the few female blues harmonica players in the country\, Annie played the New England club circuit with local bands\, and traveled to Chicago where she met and played with many of her musical idols including Pinetop Perkins\, Louis Myers\, and James Cotton. She also enjoyed yearlong stints with the Tarbox Ramblers and the Susan Tedeschi Band\, going on to perform on Susan’s first three albums. She lives in Boston with her number one musical hero\, Paul Rishell. \nPaul Rishell was born in Brooklyn\, New York in 1950\, descended from a long line of Methodist preachers and Norwegian painters. At the age of ten\, he discovered that he could keep time on the drums\, though his feet didn’t reach the pedals. He started a band a few years later\, playing surf music and rock ‘n roll\, until a friend turned him on to the country blues records of Son House\, Robert Johnson\, Charley Patton\, and Blind Lemon Jefferson. He immediately took up the guitar and in the early 70’s Paul moved to Cambridge\, Massachusetts and had the chance to play with many of the first and second generation of blues masters — including Son House\, Johnny Shines\, Sonny Terry\, Brownie McGhee\, and Howlin’ Wolf. Paul Rishell’s debut recording\, BLUES ON A HOLIDAY (Tone-Cool) was released in 1990 to resounding critical acclaim. The album was half acoustic\, half electric\, and established Paul as a masterful\, versatile blues player and as well as a deeply soulful singer and songwriter. He followed that with SWEAR TO TELL THE TRUTH in 1993\, which featured heart-stopping solo performances as well as guest artists Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters and “Little”Annie Raines. Paul’s original music has been used in plays\, films\, and countless television shows including Friends\, Oprah\, and A&E’s Biography. He has built up a stellar reputation over 40 years as a performer\, teacher\, and torchbearer of the country blues tradition. His former students include Susan Tedeschi and Michael Tarbox. Dirt Road Blues\, Paul’s instructional video/CD-Rom for Truefire.com\, was released in 2008 with detailed demonstrations and transcriptions of his original songs and songs by Scrapper Blackwell\, Blind Boy Fuller\, and many others. He is currently serving as a visiting artist at Berklee College of Music in Boston. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebookTwitterShare\n\n
