SUMMARY:Open Mic Night at The Music Mansion
DESCRIPTION:Over the last couple years we have tried a lot of things on our open mic stage. In Season 42\, we held workshops for developing musicians. in Season 43\, we invited hosts of other open mics around the state to feature on our stage. We trained new sound engineers only to forgo all the tech. It’s now musicians and audiences in a room together – a room designed for music to flow and flourish. \nEd Dean returns as our open mic host\, opening the doors to The Music Mansion. It’s a welcoming environment for beginners\, new artists\, and veteran local musicians. The Open Mic Series is one of the ways we practice what we preach and Ed is an  incredible minister for this community. Hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:Jenna Nicholls  at NotJustAnotherCoffeeHouse :Sharon
DESCRIPTION:Singer/songwriter  \nIn a tapestry of sound\, Jenna Nicholls weaves a spell: strumming her ukulele with the spirit of New Orleans or crooning a cowboy’s tale with the soul of the West. Her melodies\, like vintage vinyl spun anew\, carry the weight of memory and promise of tomorrow. With three albums under her belt\, her songs have found their way into the heart of cinema and the pulse of television. On the road she shared stages with legends like Ingrid Michaelson\, and Oscar winner Glen Hansard. From the storied stages of Carnegie Hall and the Beacon Theatre\, Jenna’s music echoes through the night\, a testament to the enduring power of song. “Her ability melodically to leave me wanting the next part of the story is mesmerizing. Jenna points out universal moments in our lives and even though they’re personal to her\, I don’t feel left out. The level of descriptive writing in her lyrics is astonishing.”  \n– Melissa Ferrick\, Singer Songwriter  \n“Her songs land like a freight ship into the harbor of hearts and ears… The air changes. Puremastery.”  \n– Glen Hansard\, Oscar winning composer of “Once”  \nhttp://www.jennanicholls.com/

SUMMARY:Stash Wyslouch\, Birds of Appetite Opens
DESCRIPTION:Stone Soup Coffeehouse has always been eager to bring fresh\, new talent to our stage so our audience has a chance to listen to what is out there in the folk music stratosphere. Stash Wyslouch qualifies as one of those artists who has never appeared at our venue\, seriously making us ask the questions\, “Well\, why the heck not?” Chris Eldridge (Punch Brothers) says of Stash Wyslouch\, “You can learn a lot about a person by the music that they make. This record provides a fantastic opportunity to explore the brilliant and freethinking mind of Stash Wyslouch. You’ll be glad to get to know him.” The concert begins at 7 pm on Saturday\, October 25\, 2025. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance on our website. \nParking at The Music Mansion at 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906 is limited and carpooling\, ride-sharing\, and mass transit are highly encouraged. There is also available parking on Benefit Street\, a short set of stairs will lead you right up to the Music Mansion. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nPolish-Colombian Stash Wyslouch is an avant-garde Bluegrass guitarist\, singer and songwriter. His music delights in story-telling\, improvisation and outer-space worthy composition. Despite his Heavy-Metal beginnings in middle and high school\, Bluegrass music has been central to Wyslouch’s life for the past 15 years touring and recording with groups such as The Deadly Gentlemen\, Bruce Molsky’s Mountain Drifters\, The Jacob Jolliff Band\, and Tony Trischka’s Early Roman Kings. \nHis 4th and most recent album “Plays and Sings Bluegrass Vol. II” was released April 30\, 2021. Conceived as a gift back to the music that has framed his career\, “Plays and Sings Bluegrass Vol. II” is a collection of zanily deconstructed Bluegrass classics. “Wyslouch tries to approach bluegrass from completely new angles — upside down\, sideways\, an interdimensional vortex only accessible from within his own mind.” – WBUR.org (March 2021\, A. Mason)

SUMMARY:Kossoy Sisters with Kate Seeger and Dean Spencer
DESCRIPTION:Newton Corner\, MA\n$20 at the door ($5 for students)\nReservations required: HouseConcerts@fssgb.org \nThe Kossoy Sisters\, Irene Saletan and Ellen Christenson\, performed at the first Newport Folk Festival\, sang in the original Production of Woody Guthrie’s Bound for Glory\, and recorded their legendary Bowling Green for Tradition Records. They are known for their clear belllike harmonies\, which have inspired and influenced other singers. Although they sing mostly southern mountain songs\, they have also adopted other traditional and contemporary songs\, as well as written some of their own. \nIrene and Ellen began singing in harmony at the age of 8 or 9\, singing mostly what they heard around the house: songs of the 20’s and music hall songs. In their early teenage years\, they became immersed in traditional songs and became part of the music scene in Washington Square in Greenwich Village. By the age of 20\, they had performed widely in New York. In addition to Newport\, the Kossoy Sisters performed at many other festivals and coffee houses\, including the Fox Hollow Festival\, University of Chicago Folk Festival\, and the Eisteddfod in eastern Massachusetts. In 1997\, Bowling Green was reissued as a CD by Rykodisc. The Kossoys resumed performing for the Folk Song Society of Greater Boston\, the Folklore Society of Greater Washington\, the Pinewoods Folk Music Club of New York\, and participated in the Truly Acoustic Folk Festival in Cambridge\, MA and the Summer Solstice Festival in southern California\, among others. In 2001\, the Coen Brothers included the Kossoy Sisters’ version of “I’ll Fly Away” in their movie\, O Brother\, Where Art Thou. Their album Hop on Pretty Girls was released in the fall of 2002.

SUMMARY:Brooks Williams - Matt Rich & Gil Clark open
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for those age 18 and under. Visit oldslooppresents.org\, John Tarr Store in Rockport\, or The Bookstore of Gloucester. The suggested contribution at the door is $20 for adults\, $5 for those age 18 and under\, and $40 for families. \nTickets and more information\nBrooks Williams is one of those select few ‘’how on earth does he do it?” artists. He can sing. He can write. And\, man oh man\, can he play guitar. \nCambridge UK-based\, Statesboro\, Georgia US-born\, admired by both listeners and fellow musicians\, Brooks Williams has been a leading light on the acoustic music scene for three decades. FATEA says his performances show “the greatest level of true expertise.” \nListed as one of the ‘Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists\,’ his guitar skills are evident as he effortlessly slides in and out of folk\, blues and country. “He was playing Americana before it had been given the name\,” says CMP . “How soulful a solo guitarist can be when he has talent\, taste and astonishing technique\,” writes Blues Revue. \nWilliams left his Georgia home in his late teens and moved to Boston at the height of the 1990’s acoustic music renaissance. He did his apprenticeship in the bars and clubs in New York and New England and cut his teeth supporting artists like Shawn Colvin\, Chris Smither\, Rory Block\, Leo Kottke\, Odetta\, Billy Bragg and Taj Mahal. \nHis first album\, North From Statesboro\, caught the attention of The Washington Post and National Public Radio\, which set the ball rolling and Williams never looked back. People took notice and acoustic music radio played him from the very beginning\, including WUMB-FM in Boston\, where Williams is one of their Top 100 Artists Of All-Time. \nIn subsequent years he has released a staggering 34 recordings in 35 years for labels like Green Linnet Records\, Solid Air Records\, Signature Sounds and Reveal\, including Diamond Days\, his latest\, which At The Barrier calls a “stunning collection from the chocolate-voiced\, guitar maestro.” \nNever one to shy away from the road\, the list of venues and festivals Brooks Williams has played is staggering. Newport\, Winnipeg\, Cropredy\, Cambridge\, Philadelphia\, are but a few of many. \nMates in the bands Northwest Fox and Backshore 500\, Mat Rich and Gil Clark have been musical collaborators since middle school. Matt now holds the Fly Amero chair at the Rhumb Line in Gloucester\, hosting musical guests every Wednesday evening\, and Gil is a frequent invitee.

SUMMARY:James Keelaghan with David Woodhead
DESCRIPTION:Admission: $30 (17 and under free)\nParking can be tricky – check this map!  parking guidance \nYou can pay with cash at the door or purchase advance tickets. \nContemporary folk songs\, at their very best\, offer an insight into the hardships\, attitudes\, and resolve of characters and events that shape our day-to-day lives. You can dress these songs up in inspired arrangements and intricate instrumentation but\, at their very essence\, the archetypal folk song is all about stories. Stories and people. Something such compelling songwriters as Eric Bogle\, Si Kahn\, Ewan MacColl\, and Stan Rogers … all understood and mined so effectively. \nJames Keelaghan\, too\, burrows into that same rich seam with equal ability and comparable conviction. To quote Eric Bibb\, the award-winning American acoustic bluesman\, after listening to Keelaghan perform: “[You’re] a joy to hear\, just beautiful.  Reminded me of the best of the best of another time – Liam Clancy\, Tom Paxton etcetera.” Less colourful but more succinct\, Dave Marsh\, the eminent Rolling Stone critic\, simply described Keelaghan as “Canada’s finest songwriter.” \nTruly\, throughout a career that now spans almost four decades\, the Juno and Canadian Folk Music Award winner has created a repertoire of incalculable importance – a unique body of work\, either inspired by or drawn from the folk tradition. Ten solo albums flush with enduring lyrical relevance. Take the beautiful but heartbreaking ballad\, Jenny Bryce\, for example. From any point of view\, it’s indistinguishable from the numerous traditional tracks covered on his disc A Few Simple Verses. \nWhat’s more\, various other originals from the Keelaghan cannon  must surely enter the domain of traditional folklore. Most notably\, Small Rebellions (highlighting the 1931 slaughter of peaceful striking miners in Bienfait\, SK); Hillcrest Mine (a prelude to the worst coal mining disaster in Canadian history); Kiri’s Piano (a triumph over adversity amidst the shameful\, racist treatment of Japanese-Canadians during WW II); Cold Missouri Waters (a harrowing portrait of the 1949 Mann Gulch Fire in the mountains of Montana) … \nA relentless musical spirit\, Keelaghan has surrounded himself with a variety of crackerjack companions down through the years that have largely included the late\, innovative\, free-spirited fiddler and composer\, Oliver Schroer\, the exuberant\, Chilean\, Latino-fusionist guitarist\, Oscar Lopez (with whom Keelaghan made two albums under the banner of Compadres)\, or the ubiquitous\, former Spirit of the West anchor and multi-instrumentalist\, Hugh MacMillan. Scrupulous audiences from Alberta to Australia bared witness to the sum of these resourceful parts. \nJames Keelaghan grew up in a bungalow in northwest Calgary\, AB\, with six siblings\, an Irish father\, and an English mum. His brother Bob would develop into a noteworthy guitarist with the excellent\, but now defunct\, Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir. From his father\, Jim\, James developed a love of history. The family record collection provided further inspiration. Traditional folk LPs by the likes of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem\, Séan Ó Riada\, and Harry Belafonte certainly caught young Keelaghan’s ear. He still cites Belafonte At Carnegie Hall as a recording that changed his life at age six! \nAppearing on over 250 recording projects\, bass player David Woodhead has worked with many influential artists including Perth County Conspiracy\, Stan Rogers\, Don Ross\, Oliver Schroer\, Loreena McKennitt\, Gil Scott-Heron\, Steve Rodby\, and David Sanborn. David has been described as “that musician who leads from in front and behind as the situation demands and seems happiest planting various challenges and musical surprises in a spirit of playfulness.” (Jowi Taylor\, CBC radio host)

SUMMARY:David Wilcox
DESCRIPTION:QUOTES \nWilcox has been crafting well written songs for decades while also bringing them to life on stage.\n…The Anniston Star \nA lot of David Wilcox’s fans consider him a musical minister\, his songs providing spiritual grounding as they rhyme and dance.\n…The Hippo \n  \nABOUT \nDavid Wilcox | Official Biography \nThere are songwriters who chronicle life\, and then there’s David Wilcox—an artist who metabolizes it. He has long been a quiet force in American folk music; a musician’s musician\, a writer’s writer\, and a seeker whose gift lies in making the personal feel universal. \nWith the upcoming release of The Way I Tell the Story (2025)\, Wilcox proves\, yet again\, that resilience isn’t just a survival skill—it’s an art form. The record shimmers with musical sophistication but leaves just enough space for the listener to feel what Wilcox has always done best: tell the truth\, gently but without apology. \nThe music he’s creating now comes from a place that can’t be faked. In recent years\, Wilcox’s life has been shaped by his wife’s Parkinson’s diagnosis—a shift that reordered his priorities and redefined his sense of time\, love\, and presence. But rather than retreat\, Wilcox leaned in. “Times get tough\, and music gets good\,” he says\, and means it. These songs don’t dramatize. They don’t resolve neatly. They sit in the complexity of living—open-eyed\, unafraid\, quietly brave. \nWilcox’s career began in earnest in the late 1980s\, when his self-released debut The Nightshift Watchman caught the attention of A&M Records. His major-label debut\, How Did You Find Me Here (1989)\, became an unexpected hit\, selling over 100\,000 copies largely by word of mouth and live shows alone—an unheard-of feat for a debut folk record. Critics took note of his deft guitar work and emotional clarity\, but it was the unassuming wisdom threaded through his lyrics that truly set him apart. Rolling Stone praised his “soulful insight\,” while The New York Times called his music “a kind of open-hearted therapy.” \nWhat followed was a string of acclaimed albums—Big Horizon (1994)\, Turning Point (1997)\, What You Whispered (2000)—each one refining his reputation as a songwriter who knows how to say hard things in soft\, lasting ways. Over the years\, he’s shared stages and collaborations with artists like Shawn Colvin\, Patty Larkin\, Pierce Pettis\, and John Gorka—fellow craftspeople committed to song over spectacle. But Wilcox has never followed the current. He’s followed the work\, and in 2018 Wilcox won top honors in the 23rd annual USA Songwriting for his effervescent “We Make the Way by Walking” from his album\, The View From the Edge. \nThat work has earned him quiet but enduring respect. His songs have been covered by k.d. lang and Tony Rice; his guitar work studied by those who understand that precision\, when rooted in care\, becomes its own kind of virtuosity. His influence runs deep\, especially among younger artists trying to build something real in a world obsessed with surface. \nWilcox’s music still resonates\, especially now\, because it doesn’t try to outpace the moment. It meets it. In his world\, craft is a form of care. Introspection is a public offering. And staying soft in a hard world isn’t a liability—it’s a kind of leadership. \nfor much more info – https://www.davidwilcox.com/ \n

SUMMARY:Ellis Paul
DESCRIPTION:Way back in the early 2000s\, we first hosted Ellis Paul at our venue at Slater Mill Historic Site. It was a night to remember\, as he was becoming a known entity in the singer-songwriter world of folk\, and we had never had the opportunity to bring him to Stone Soup Coffeehouse. In a quick conversation\, after a great night of music\, he told me he had been trying to get a gig at our coffeehouse for a few of years. I responded that I had only recently started booking\, and thanks to the recommendation of his agent\, I was so glad to be given the opportunity to bring him to Stone Soup. And that begins our history with Ellis Paul and the many years he has returned to play on a Stone Soup stage\, whether at Slater Mill\, St. Paul’s Church or now at the beautiful Music Mansion in Providence. The show begins at 7 pm on Saturday\, November 8\, 2025. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased in advance on our website. Please note\, this show could sell out\, so purchase your tickets early. \nABOUT THE ARTIST:  \nEllis Paul doesn’t just write songs; he’s a guitar-carrying reporter who covers the human condition and details the hopes\, loves\, losses of those he observes\, turning their stories into luminous pieces of music that get under your skin and into your bloodstream. And much like the artists who have influenced him\, everyone from Joni Mitchell\, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon to the singer-songwriter who is undoubtedly his greatest inspiration\, Woody Guthrie\, Paul weaves deeply personal experiences with social issues and renders them as provocative works that are as timely as they are timeless.  \nBorn and raised in Maine\, Paul attended Boston College on a track scholarship and in the evenings became a fixture on the city’s open mic circuit. After winning a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriter competition\, he caught the ear of folk luminary Bill Morrissey\, who produced his indie album Say Something in 1993. This led to a seven-album contract with Rounder Records and the 1994 album\, Stories. His songs have appeared  \nin several blockbuster films (Me\, Myself\, and Irene; Shallow Hal\, Hall Pass) and have been covered by award winning country artists (Sugarland\, Kristian Bush\, Jack Ingram). Through a steady succession of albums of his own – a remarkable 23 releases so far – and a constant touring presence around the world\, Paul’s audience has grown into a loyal legion of fans.  \nAlong the way\, he has picked up an impressive number of awards including the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award\, 15 Boston Music Awards\, An Honorary Doctorate from the University of Maine\, the 2019 International Acoustic Music Awards Artist of the Year and most recently his album\, The Storyteller’s Suitcase\, was named the 2019 NERFA Album of the Year. His new album “55” touches on the necessity of gratitude in a difficult era of the pandemic and divided political stances on his own imprint\, Rosella Records www.ellispaul.com  \nPhil Hoffman described Ellis so: “The storyteller closes his suitcase\, but the worlds within it keep changing\, the traveler keeps moving on\, and brand new vistas keep opening up with each twist and turn in the road. From Maine to Big Sur\, Okemah to Homer\, Alaska\, from hardscrabble rustbelt towns to peachy Georgia\, from the plains of Texas to the snows of Alberta\, these lands are our lands. This land is his land.“Born in Okemah shoes\, with the Dust Bowl blues\, a friend of the working man\,” was how Willis Alan Ramsey described Woody Guthrie\, a description that doubles to perfectly situate Ellis Paul’s exploration of the fractured\, kaleidoscopic landscape of America’s soul. Ellis Paul shares his land with us. SUMMARY:Barnaby Bright at Harmony on the Green in Lexington\, MA
DESCRIPTION:Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse Concerts continues its 4th season with the Kansas City based Barnaby Bright. Not easily defined\, Barnaby Bright is an alt-Americana trio with contemporary influences that reflect their geographical journey from Brooklyn to Nashville to Kansas\, while calling on Nathan’s Oklahoma roots and distant relation to Merle Haggard. The band has accumulated a dedicated following that feeds on their ability to spin storytelling into sonic treasures- a BB show will take audiences on a ride through love songs\, murder ballads and deeply moving\, relatable themes. The most commonly uttered phrase at the end of a show seems to be\, “that was a spiritual experience.” \nNathan’s virtuosic acoustic guitar & banjo playing and Becky’s effortless soaring vocals over the drone of the harmonium are pushing the boundaries of today’s indie folk landscape. \nThe Kansas City based duo spent a decade touring and making records before recently adding Carmen Dieker to the band. The blend of their three part harmonies and Carmen’s haunting fiddle and violin-playing add an element to shows that fans of the band never knew they had been wanting. \nBarnaby Bright received the grand prize at NYC’s prestigious Songwriter’s Circle\, were elected to Amazon’s Top 100 Albums of the Year\, and most recently their Christmas album was picked by the New York Times as one of the Top 20 Christmas Albums of the Year\, with 5 of the songs being featured in the Netflix hit TV show\, Sex/Life. \nWhile opening for illustrious acts such as Norah Jones and The Lumineers\, Barnaby Bright continues to mesmerize audiences and convert new followers one show at a time while raising awareness of Kansas City’s diverse landscape.
