SUMMARY:The Clements Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The Clements Brothers\nThe Clements Brothers are George (guitar) and Charles (upright bass)\, identical twins from the heart of New England. The two have been playing and writing music together for as long as they can remember\, first entering the Americana music scene in 2012 as part of the internationally touring grassroots band The Lonely Heartstring Band\, with whom they put out two albums on Rounder Records. More recently\, George could be found playing the role of Paul Simon in the hit national theater show The Simon and Garfunkel Story\, while Charles could often be seen in the bass section of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. \nThe Clements Brothers recently released their first original project together\, focused on capturing their singer-songwriter sensibilities in a unique blend with harmonies only achievable by their identical voices–at once enthralling and intimate\, groovy and serene.

SUMMARY:Avi Jacob | Originals & Dylan
DESCRIPTION:Avi Jacob is one of those performing artists who comes along once in a while\, whose sound is unique and new\, and you get the feeling that\, yes\, this one is going somewhere. Avi first performed at Stone Soup Coffeehouse opening for Allysen Callery in 2022. Since then he has been making a name for himself at venues all over New England\, as well as other places. This weekend\, Avi returns to the Stone Soup stage to not only sing many of his own songs\, but to also do a set of Bob Dylan classics. The show is on Saturday\, February 8\, 2025 at 7 pm at the Music Mansion\, 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906. Tickets are $22\, and are available at the door or with reservation through our website. Please appear at least 15 minutes before the performance begins\, or you will relinquish your tickets to those waiting to attend (unless it is prepaid).  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS  \nBorn & raised in New England\, Avi ran away from home in his teen years and ended up in Boston. Spending the next several years in & out of hospitals with a genetic disease\, Avi was mostly confined to his bedroom where he spent his time & energy creating songs. After recuperating\, Avi came out of the room and into the world with the ability to express his true and deepest feelings through song\, in a way most men are discouraged to do from birth. Moving to South Carolina\, Avi started making a name for himself playing music festivals\, being featured in dozens of music blogs & samplers. Over the last two years\, Avi has been balancing touring the country playing cafés\, clubs & theatres with farming\, truck driving\, & doing demolition.  \nAlmost all of Jacob’s tunes pack an emotional wallop\, and the five on Surrender\, due out this month\, are no exception. “These songs are extremely personal\, maybe a little too personal\,” Jacob laughs of the EP\, which he recorded with Simone Felice (who produced The Lumineers’ latest album) in a Catskills barn. “Some people go to therapists; I write songs.” Charleston: The City Magazine (2017)  \nAvi will be accompanied by his band for this performance. Band members are Ben Cosgrove on piano\, Brian Jablonski on pedal steel and Polly Bessette on harmony vocals. Ben is a traveling composer-performer whose music explores themes of landscape\, place\, and environment. Described by the Boston Globe as “a sonic plein-air painter… [using] his piano as a paintbrush\,” Brian is a local musician who is the epitome of the word ubiquitous\, appearing and supporting many of the local folk/singer-songwriter performers and bands in and around the state. Polly is a singer/songwriter from Warren Rhode Island with a passion for lyricism and folky tunes. Her music captures the ears of many through her raw and thoughtful recollections of universal growing pains in the sweetest of sounds.

SUMMARY:Peter Mulvey & Ruth Theodore at Harmony on the Green\, with Andrew Sue Wing opening
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 20 years\, Peter Mulvey has pursued a restless\, eclectic path as a writer and musician – immersing himself in Tin Pan Alley jazz\, modern acoustic\, poetry\, narrative\, and Americana stylings. He has shared the stage with luminaries such as Emmylou Harris\, Richard Thompson\, Ani DiFranco\, Indigo Girls\, and Greg Brown. Mulvey began as a self-described “city kid” from Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. He traveled to Dublin\, Ireland\, in 1989\, where he learned the trade of the street singer. Returning to the States\, he began making a living as a subway and street busker in Boston\, before taking to the road full time. Mulvey has a rare ability to hold an audience’s attention and transport them\, using wit\, humor. \nJoining Peter will be Ruth Theodore\, Peter’s labelmate on Righteous Babe Records. Ruth is a seasoned British songwriter and producer whose work fascinates audiences with its gripping honesty and distinctive lyricism. Ruth’s songs of life\, death\, love\, and the human condition are that of a skilled contemporary songwriter. Delivered with effortless unapologetic passion\, Theodore’s live performances will take you places\, make you laugh and cry and often both at once. Ruth has produced three critically acclaimed records\, and following her most recent collaboration with award winning US producer and bassist Todd Sickafoose (Anais Mitchell/Ani Difranco)\, Ruth is back collaborating as co-producer with Todd on her 2024 release “I am I am”. \nAndrew Sue Wing is a Boston based singer/songwriter and guitarist specializing in funk-rock. Equipped with a strong baritone voice and a unique style of rhythm and lead guitar\, he’s able to belt out strong choruses and deliver soulful ballads. His repertoire includes both originals and covers of classics. SUMMARY:First Church and Dedham School of Music Present the Smack Dabs Swing Band on Friday\, March 7th!
DESCRIPTION:First Friday Jazz/Classical Concerts Sponsored by the Dedham School of Music and First Church\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell \nFirst Friday Jazz/Classical Concerts Sponsored by Dedham School of Music and First Church presents its sixth concert of the 2024-2025 season featuring the Smack Dabs at First Church and Parish in Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, March 7\, 2025 at 7:30 pm in the Meetinghouse. (The Smack Dabs concert is partially funded by grants from both the Massachusetts and Dedham Cultural Councils.) There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets cost $20 and are available online at https://www.dedhamuu.org/live-music and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm.  In case of inclement weather\, please check the First Church Facebook page (20+) First Church and Parish in Dedham | Facebook for any scheduling changes. \nThe Smack Dabs specialize in good-time Swing Blues music from the 1930s\, featuring the songs of Tampa Red\, Big Bill Broonzy\, The Harlem Hamfats\, and many others.  The 1930s were halcyon days for Swing music\, but not just for the likes of big bands like Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman\, There were literally hundreds of small Swing combos from trios to octets\, each with its own unique take on the music that dominated the market during the height of the Great Depression. The list of artists who led small combos include Tiny Grimes\, Slim Galliard\, Billie Holiday\, and Fats Waller. In addition to these groups\, several important vocal harmony groups were also active on the scene\, including the Cats and the Fiddle\, the Mills Brothers\, the Ink Spots\, and the Spirits of Rhythm. This delightful and timeless genre features a rich variety of musical styles\, ranging from mournful blues to joyful celebrations\, setting the stage for incredible solo and group improvisations and delighting listening audiences and dancers alike. \nThe Smack Dabs repertoire embodies a melange of these Swing styles. For example\, the Smack Dabs Band gets its instrumental configuration from Tampa Red and his Chicago Five\, its improvisational vitality from the small Black Swing combo\, and its swagger from risqué Blues. The Smack Dabs are proud to showcase some of Boston’s most compelling improvising musicians in their lineup\, bringing a fresh and unique sound to each performance. The Band includes Mark Earley on guitar\, vocals and kazoo\, David Sparr on piano\, Jim Gray on upright bass\, Mark Berney on cornet\, Kit Buckley on saxophone and clarinet\, and Jon Kraus on washboard. The Smack Dabs celebrate the bawdy\, joyous\, inclusive character of 1930’s Swing Blues music and is dedicated to honoring those who made it great. Meet The Smack Dabs! \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, Friday Folk Coffeehouse\, as well as our First Friday Jazz & Classical Concerts in conjunction with Dedham School of Music founded in 2008 providing an environment for people of all ages\, abilities\, and means to learn\, play\, and enjoy music.

SUMMARY:Steve Allain\, Chris Monti and Peter Avitable
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that Stone Soup Coffeehouse began over forty years ago in the living room of one of the founder’s homes. It became a place where local musicians could invite friends and perform their work so they could be heard. It was a community event that grew from house concerts to the undercrofts of churches\, eventually landing at the Music Mansion on the east side of Providence. Tonight we get back to those early roots\, well\, not so much in a living room (although our venue is about as comfortable and inviting as one)\, but to bring in local artists to our stage. We will welcome Steve Allain\, Christ Monti and Peter Avitable to play for your\, our loyal audience. Each performer will perform a solo set. The show is on  Saturday\, March  8\, 2025 at 7 pm at the Music Mansion\, 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906. Tickets are $22\, and are available at the door or in advance through our website.  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS  \nSteve Allain: Born about a half an hour west of Boston\, Massachusetts\, in the city of Marlborough to French-Canadian parents\, Steve Allain was raised on country music and Elvis Presley records. Although he didn’t play an instrument when he was growing up\, other than the dreaded recorder in the fifth grade\, he spent days daydreaming of playing music in a band. When Steve was nine\, his family returned to New Brunswick\, Canada. Family get-togethers with uncles\, aunts\, and cousins gave him his first experiences with live music.  He eventually graduated from The Musicians institute in Hollywood\, California\, and later received a Bachelor’s Degree in music from Webster University (St Louis\, MO) and a Master’s degree in music from The Cleveland Institute of Music (Cleveland\, OH). These years really helped to shape the musician/composer/songwriter that he has become.  Not only has Steve been praised for his excellent musicianship and soulful voice he has also been nominated for numerous awards. He is a must see live. Steve Allain is a solo artist as well as in Cardboard Ox a duo with established singer-songwriter Tracie Potochnik.  \nChrist Monti would like to be known as a Musician\, Songwriter\, Bandleader and Educator. His eclectic style reveals his passion for rock & roll\, country-blues\, early jazz\, R+B\, as well as music from the Americas\, Middle East\, India\, and North & West Africa. Singing and playing electric guitar and harmonica in several bands\, he leads The Chris Monti Band (featuring Theo Regan on bass and Michael Lewis on drums) playing an upbeat mix of original dance music along with West African and Caribbean songs. As a member of The Devilfish\, a high energy\, power trio dance band\, he plays covers of great Rock\, Surf\, Mambo\, Cumbia\, Punk\, Blues\, Boogie\, R+B\, Latin Pop and Country Songs.  Known for his effortless style and musical curiosity\, Chris has been doing the good work as a musician in New England for over fifteen years. He has immersed himself in West African style guitar\, dug deep into country-blues and old-time music\, and moves seamlessly between diverse styles from Egypt\, Peru and India. Chris has played with the Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars\, Big Nazo\, and the Double Decker Dance Band. \nPeter Avitable will also be appearing on our Stone Soup stage for the first time. Pete will bring his understated wit\, surprisingly impressive guitar riffs\, engaging smile\, songs and stories of irony\, awkwardness\, wisdom and humor to his audience\, and we will get to know Pete for the first time.  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Claudia Schmidt and Sally Rogers
DESCRIPTION:QUOTES: \n“Those who keep trying to categorize Claudia Schmidt’s music should just give it up and file her under the general category ‘TALENT’ Big talent.” Post-Bulletin (Rochester\, Mn.) \n“Claudia\, Claudia\, Claudia\, that’s all you need to say. .one of the finest folk voices ever to pick up a mic. Chocolatey smooth vocals swirled into jiving notes. Too delicious!”\nBorder’s Books and Music. \n“At the heart of Sally’s work is traditional and contemporary folk music. Her music is like a quilt\, made up of soul-stirring ballads\, messages of hope\, knee-slapping dance tunes and gentle lullabies.” \nBIO:\nAbout Sally and Claudia \nClaudia Schmidt and Sally Rogers have been weaving their voices\, dulcimers\, and guitars together for decades\, creating an atmosphere of joy and musical lushness that audiences find so irresistible\, they frequently join right in. \nStarting with their soaring harmonies – “blood harmony” was how one fan described it – fascinating double dulcimer work\, the mix of 6 and 12 string guitars\, then brought together with a wide choice of material encompassing their originals\, traditional\, and choice compositions of contemporary songwriters\, a concert by these two masters of their craft is an immensely satisfying and restorative experience. Time has only deepened and enriched the music they create together.\nhttps://sallyrogers.com/concert-booking/sally-and-claudia/ \nSally began her career as a full-time touring musician in 1979\, after encouragement from Stan Rogers\, the legendary Canadian singer-songwriter. That was followed by an invitation from Garrison Keillor to appear on A Prairie Home Companion. She appeared more than a dozen times on that show\, which launched her performing career. Her travels have since taken her to Europe\, China\, Hungary and Poland\, England and Scotland and all across the United States.\nSally has performed with fellow Michigan native and long-time friend\, Claudia Schmidt\, since 1981. As a folk duo extraordinaire\, they have recorded four albums together including Closing the Distance\, While We Live\, and Evidence of Happiness. In 2016\, Sally and Claudia released their fourth collaborative album\, We are Welcomed.

SUMMARY:Tom Smith - Coffeehouse Feature with Mini Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:“Tom Smith is a songwriter’s songwriter\, a story teller through stage banter and song with a genuine sincerity and love for what he does that shines through in every lyric\, chord and spoken word. His instrumental style and delivery are spot on and Tom always leaves the crowd better for being there.” – Tom Bianchi\, Musician and venue host\, The Burren\, Somerville\, MA.  Tom Smith’s songs are in turns humorous\, touching\, thought provoking\, and inspiring. Deeply rooted in the old-school folk tradition\, his timeless stories are told with a voice that is honest and sincere.  Tom grew up in rural Pennsylvania in a family where music was part of the fabric of everyday life. With songs as sweet and biting as the nectar and venom in her voice\, Sumner’s lyric-forward writing and penchant for snaking chord progressions demand something far beyond folk conventions\, highlighting the acrobatic range of her brilliant bandmates Kat Wallace (fiddle) and Mike Siegel (upright bass). \nThe blog Cover Lay Down said of Rachel\, “Though Sumner has roots in both the bluegrass and classical worlds\, this is true-blue singer-songwriter folk through and through\, too: achingly clear\, and wide open to the world\, with twang and tenderness enough to carry us through the fire of an unusually difficult year.” \nEnjoy the relaxing\, warm atmosphere of friendly people\, good music\, coffee\, tea\, and home baked goodies.  The Open Book Coffeehouse is located in the community room of the Canton Public Library at 786 Washington Street\, Canton\, and is made possible by the Friends of the Library. SUMMARY:Alice Howe & Freebo
DESCRIPTION:Alice Howe & Freebo\nAlice Howe and Freebo present a unique study in contrasts\, bringing together a rising voice in Americana music and a venerable rock\, folk\, and blues icon. Each a compelling performer in their own right\, they both lead and support each other in their well-crafted songs with flawless harmonies and tasteful instrumentation. They have worked as creative collaborators in the studio and on stage since 2017. Freebo weaves his unique fretless bass stylings into Alice’s superb vocals for a presentation with undeniable chemistry. \nTo hear Alice Howe sing is to be enraptured by the natural\, unaffected beauty of her voice. There’s no artifice\, no histrionics — just honest\, authentic\, emotionally resonant singing in the tradition of the roots music that shaped her. On Circumstance\, her second and latest album\, the Los Angeles–based singer-songwriter guitarist displays her vocal prowess and introspective writing in abundance\, mining both her heart and her musical tastes for a deep\, personal journey across an Americana soundscape dotted with blues\, folk\, country\, soul\, and rock. Recorded in two sessions at the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals\, Alabama\, where Etta James and Wilson Pickett once shook the walls\, the record channels their spirits with 11 stirring tracks that pull no punches diving into the vagaries of the heart and her own personal journey. As an old soul inside a 30-something millennial\, Alice puts her stamp on Americana’s venerable strands with 10 standout originals evoking both the classic singer-songwriters and the seminal music that once filled airwaves\, roadhouses\, and juke joints. \nFreebo is best known for his decade of touring and recording with Bonnie Raitt and has distinguished himself as one of the great bassists of our time\, playing on records with CSN\, Maria Muldaur\, John Mayall\, Ringo Starr\, Dr. John\, and Neil Young as well as appearing on Saturday Night Live\, The Midnight Special\, The Muppet Show\, and in concert with the legendary Spinal Tap. Not willing to simply rest on those achievements\, Freebo delved more deeply into his creativity and has become a highly regarded singer/songwriter\, now working on his 6th full-length solo CD. A multi–award winner\, he is also a finalist in numerous songwriting contests. Freebo’s music reflects his compassionate concern for the world and people around him\, and his lyrics and open stage banter have helped him connect with listeners worldwide. A live musical experience with Freebo is astute\, insightful\, clever\, and truly melodic.

The Collective operates on a two-year\, cohort-based model\, specifically designed to address the unique challenges faced by underrepresented artists in the folk music scene. Through this model\, participants receive performance opportunities\, mentorship\, and collaborative space\, all aimed at helping them cultivate sustainable\, creative careers. \nThe Collective serves not only the artists themselves but also the wider New England community by broadening the reach of folk music and making it more accessible. Success for the Folk Collective is measured through various metrics\, including audience attendance\, diversity of participants\, engagement levels at events\, social media interactions\, and feedback from artists and the community. Partners supporting the initiative include institutions like Berklee College of Music\, the Cambridge Arts Council\, and the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation\, among others. \nARTISTS FOR THE MARCH 15 SHOW WILL INCLUDE: \nAlastair Moock is an award-winning singer-songwriter; a Grammy-nominated family musician; social justice and songwriting educator for all ages; and co-founder of The Opening Doors Project\, an anti-racist music organization.
