SUMMARY:Jon Shain and FJ Ventre with opener Kemp Harris
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets cost $12 for adults and $5 for youth age 18 and under. At the door\, the suggested contribution is $14 for adults\, $5 for youth\, and $28 for families. \ntickets and more information \nJon Shain grew up in Haverhill\, Massachusetts\, and FJ Ventre grew up in Beverly. They began making music together in 1982 when they met in high school. \nJon headed south to Duke University in North Carolina to study American History and continue his musical journey. In addition to studying with jazz professor Paul Jeffrey\, he had the good fortune to learn the piedmont blues tradition firsthand by playing in Big Boy Henry’s backing band. Jon won the 2019 International Blues Challenge in the solo/duo category. He has shared stages with the likes of Keb’ Mo’\, John Hiatt\, Little Feat\, and Jackson Browne. \nFJ went to University of Massachusetts-Lowell\, earning a B.A. in Music Performance and Sound Recording. Since relocating to North Carolina\,  he has been performing as a sought after sideman\, engineering at his own Good Luck Studio\, and operating graphic design firm Tadpole Designs. \nWith FJ joining Jon in North Carolina\, they resumed their musical partnership. They collaborated on the 2019 CD Tomorrow Will Be Yesterday Soon and their new CD Never Found a Way to Tame the Blues\, release in 2021. \nJon and FJ are Old Sloop veterans. They performed as a duo in 2016\, and with blues harpist Bill Newton in 2011. \nKemp Harris defies categorization. He is a singer and songwriter; a master weaver of American musical styles. He’s also an actor\, activist\, author\, and storyteller\, and an award-winning educator who has taught young public school students for more than 40 years. \nKemp has acted in numerous films and TV shows such as SMILF (Showtime)\, and is comfortable sharing the stage with artists such as Taj Mahal\, Koko Taylor\, and Gil Scott-Heron\, as well as performing shows with his smokin’ band. He wrote and performed “If Loneliness Was Black” for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Complexions Dance Company. Kemp has also composed for WGBH Public Television/Boston. \nKemp’s powers of observation\, his unique gift for shining a light on our modern world and what it means to be alive in these times\, have only deepened over a lifetime devoted to the most basic and profound of pursuits\, genuine human connection. Whether he’s in the classroom\, on a film set\, leading a workshop\, or performing on the concert stage\, at the end of the day\, Kemp says\, “I’m an old black man telling stories and spreading the love.” \nKemp Harris is a thief\, a tease and a heartbreaker. He knows too much. And it’s all right there when he sings. Beautifully there. He’ll take your breath away.\n– NPR’s On Point

SUMMARY:Tom Rush with piano player Seth Glier
DESCRIPTION:Now celebrating five decades of touring\, Tom has been thrilling audiences here and abroad with hits like No Regrets\, Circle Game\, Remember Song\, Urge for Going and Merrimack County. \nTom Rush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound. He helped shape the folk revival in the ’60s\, the folk-rock movement of the ‘70s\, and then the renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s\, his music having left its stamp on generations of artists. James Taylor\, Emmylou Harris\, Tom Petty and Garth Brooks have cited Tom a major influence.  His early recordings introduced the world to the work of Joni Mitchell\, Jackson Browne and James Taylor.  Subsequently\, his Club\n47 concerts brought national attention to emerging artists such as Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin. \nAs vital and engaging as ever\, Tom is still doing what audiences love him for: writing and playing …passionately\, tenderly…knitting together the musical traditions and talents of our times. He’s also celebrating a YouTube hit\, The Remember Song\, that’s gone viral with over 7 million views. \nTom currently tours either as a solo act\, or — in keeping with his life-long interest in introducing emerging artists to a wider audience —accompanied by up-and-coming Singer/Songwriter Seth Glier.  In either format he continues to captivate sold out audiences of loyal fans.

SUMMARY:Emerald Rae and The Bombadils
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets cost $12 for adults and $5 for youth age 18 and under. At the door\, the suggested contribution is $14 for adults\, $5 for youth\, and $28 for families. \ntickets and more information \nThis co-bill pairs two performers who create some of the most original music you will ever hear. \nEmerald Rae is a fiddler and folksinger originally from Gloucester and now living in Vermont. Roots Music Report hails her as “a spell-caster of no small skill… maxing out her axe’s potential in the service of her consistently compelling melodies” and recognizes her self-titled 2018 release as “one of the year’s more fetching releases”. She was chosen as a Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist and is quickly gaining ground as one of the top new artists to follow this year. Pairing ornamented vocals with groovy percussive fiddle\, Emerald pushes the boundaries of the imagination with a refreshingly colorful palate. \nCanadian Folk Music Award nominees The Bombadils bring together bluegrass\, Celtic\, and singer-songwriter traditions with front-porch style and classical grace. Canadian arts journalist Bob Mersereau describes their music as “folk tunes done with musical adventure and sophistication” and Elmore Magazine calls it “an enchanting folk romp.” Sarah Frank and Luke Fraser met in 2009 while studying music at McGill University in Montreal\, initially performing as an Irish pub band as a way to break up their studies. In 2015 they released the full-length album\, “Grassy Roads\, Wandering Feet\,”  which was quickly followed by “New Shoes” in 2016 which was nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards and won Folk Music Ontario’s Album of the Year award.

SUMMARY:Jud Caswell at The Linden Tree\, virtually
DESCRIPTION:LINDEN TREE COFFEEHOUSE APRIL 9 at 7:30 \nLive Streaming show with New England Notable Singer-Songwriter \n  MAINE’S JUD CASWELL\, another New England Notable \nPay what you can\, suggested $20pp \nThe Linden Tree Coffeehouse continues its 37th season with Maine’s Jud Caswell.  The live concert will be broadcast on youtube and facebook with limited audience at our Covid alternative site. Jud has been the winners of several prestigious songwriting awards such as the Dave Carter Memorial Song Contest in Oregon\, the Ploweshares in Pennsylvania\, and Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk in Texas. Jud\, this New England Notable performer\, is more than a great singer and guitar player.  His songs are stories with beautiful images and interesting characters he brings to life.  www.LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org \nRich Warren in Sing Out Magazine described Jud Caswell as highly original and wise beyond his years!  Maine’s Jud Caswell is a little bit like a one-man folk festival. You’ve got your banjo picking\, your Irish drinking songs\, a rack of acoustic instruments\, and a deep catalog of award-winning originals. He’s often compared to James Taylor and David Wilcox\, but his songs draw on a long musical history and wide-ranging influences from jazz and Piedmont blues to contemporary folk and rock.  His sixth CD reflects his years full of music\, a celebration of life\, love\, family\, friends\, and all that is wonderful about midcoast Maine. His song\, Blackberry Time\, got him a lot of folk radio airplay and several singer-songwriting awards from Florida\, Oregon\, Texas\, and locally in Massachusetts.  Jud’s songs take you into his stories with clear images and characters while accompanying himself on his beautiful six-string guitar. \n The title song from his sixth CD\, “The Great Divide” was the #2 song on the Folk Alliance International Charts for October\, 2021! This song was inspired by his grandparents – a Maine couple who celebrated 70 anniversaries together. It starts off with his old family anecdote: “Nana was a registered Republican\, Pappy was a Democrat for life…” There was never a time I didn’t know that about them. And there was never a time that I saw any strife caused by it. A relationship like that seems almost inconceivable today. That makes me sad. And it makes me worried. It makes me want to find a way to reach out a hand – even when I feel it being slapped away. I take great pride in the fact that this song has been loved and shared by Democrats and Republicans alike. I hope my grandparents would be proud as well.”  www.JudCaswell.com \nPlease donate to our  Linden Tree performers. With few in-person gigs\, performers still need to pay rent and other living expenses.  Our suggested donation is $20.  Please donate whatever you are able. There will be a link to PayPal or checks may be mailed to Linden Tree Coffeehouse\, 8 Dexter Lane\, Wakefield\, MA 01880. Thank you. \nThe Linden Tree Coffeehouse operates\, in part\, with thanks to partial support from Wakefield’s Art Council of the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Ivy Chord Coffeehouse in Reading. \nTo view any of our shows\, visit our website: www.LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org\, then chose YouTube or Facebook: Note our previous streaming shows are still available for viewing on our YouTube and Facebook pages. \nFor more information about the Linden Tree Coffeehouse check our Facebook and webpages: LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org. or call 781-246-2836. \n

SUMMARY:Annie Sumi with opener Megan Burtt
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are $12. The suggested contribution at the door is $15 for adults\, $5 for juniors\, and $30 for families. \ntickets and more information \nAnnie Sumi is a mixed-race\, ethereal-folk artist from Canada. Her music is intimate and expansive\, inviting the listener into a familiar otherworld. Inspired by the mirrored relationship between physical and emotional landscapes\, Sumi’s music speaks of human experience through the language of the senses. \n“In recent years\, I have let myself lean into that space between things as a practice of listening\, and it feels like I become an animal led by my ear\, or my tongue\, or my hands\, toward a song.” \nSince 2015\, the Ontario-based songwriter has released three critically-acclaimed albums and toured her music across Canada\, parts of the U.S. and Europe. Solastalgia is a reflection on the feeling of “homesickness” related to our environment\, our relationships\, and ourselves. Reflections and In the Unknown have been awarded with a number of nominations as ‘Emerging Artist’\, ‘Female Vocalist’\, and ‘Songwriter of the Year’\, and received support from national and international radio. \nMegan Burtt is an international touring singer/songwriter decorated with national recognition.  Since her sophomore release “The Bargain”\, Megan has performed at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater\, been featured with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra\, toured Europe\, across the US\, and supported artists like Gregory Alan Isakov\, Chris Isaak\, Leann Rimes and Marc Cohn. She is the winner of the Kerrville NewFolk\, Rocky Mountain Folk Festival and Westword Music Award and a finalist in Mountain NewSong\, Songwriter Serenade and Great American Song Contest.

DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 6th at 7:00 PM ET \nThis event is a part of a 4 show series. \nThough John is often thought of as one of the most prolific and powerful songwriters in folk music\, his roots are firmly planted in traditional music. This concert will feature an homage to his many mentors\, selections from his field recordings housed at the Library of Congress’ Archive of American Folksong\, and some very special surprises.
