SUMMARY:"Bound for Glory" - Woody Guthrie Tribute Show
DESCRIPTION:FSSGB is pleased to present “Bound for Glory”\, our Woody Guthrie Tribute show! The show features many FSSGB members and friends\, many of whom have performed in past Woody shows going way back to the 60’s. \nAdmission: $10 for all at the door (children 17 and under are free) \n“Bound for Glory” is a performance of songs and stories about the life of Woodrow Wilson (“Woody”) Guthrie\, considered by many to be the founder of modern American folk music. Many wonderful songs written by Woody and performed by members of FSSGB are interspersed with short recitations from his autobiography. It is a funny\, cynical\, earthy and tragic account of his life in an Oklahoma oil-boom town\, of the Depression that followed\, and of his subsequent travels in\, on\, and under trains\, in stolen cars and on his feet\, round an America going rotten from the top downwards. \nChorus sheets are made available and the audience is encouraged to sing along. \nRefreshments will be served at intermission. \nParking: there are small lots on either side of the church\, and there’s some on-street parking in the neighborhood. We’re allowed to park at the middle school next door (75 Church St)\, and there’s a municipal lot at the intersection of Church St and Rt 20 (one block south of the church).

SUMMARY:Ryanhood - Eva James opens
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for those age 18 and under. Visit oldslooppresents.org\, John Tarr Store in Rockport\, or The Bookstore of Gloucester. The suggested contribution at the door is $25 for adults\, $5 for those age 18 and under\, and $50 for families. \nTickets and more information\nNamed ‘Best Group/Duo’ in the International Acoustic Music Awards\, acoustic-duo Ryanhood got their first break more than a decade ago as street-performers at Boston’s Quincy Market. It was there that they were spotted by a college booking agent and thrust into the college touring scene\, where Campus Activities Magazine would name them “one of the most requested acts by college buyers all across the country.” They’ve since gone on to perform more than a thousand shows in 46 U.S. states over the past decade\, and have shared stages with Jason Mraz\, Matt Nathanson\, Train\, and many more. \nA mesmerizing force in the realm of intimate dark pop\, Eva James emerges with a voice that embodies both complexity and strength. Her music conjures a delicate balance of haunting beauty and raw vulnerability\, drawing listeners into a world where shadows reveal their own kind of light.

SUMMARY:Janie Meneely and Rob van Sante House Concert
DESCRIPTION:Reservations required: send email to HouseConcerts@fssgb.org.  $20 cash at the door (students $5\, 17 and under free) \nMeneely & van Sante present an evening of music as lively as it is eclectic\, with songs culled from maritime traditions old and new mixed with contemporary ballads about the ways of today’s world. \nJanie Meneely and Rob van Sante began coalescing as a duo in 2015\, with Rob offering support on Janie’s solo gigs whenever he was in the Washington\, D.C. area\, where she was living at the time. As a prolific songwriter of all things Chesapeake\, Janie was a well-known figure around the mid-Atlantic waterfront\, but it was Rob’s brilliant guitar work and harmony singing that really pushed her work into the greater realm of the traditional folk world where Rob had already made his mark. \nWhile Janie had stayed “local” throughout her musical career\, Rob had traveled the world\, first as a touring artist in his own right\, and then as back-up musician/sideman for\, primarily\, Alan Reid (co-founder and chief songwriter of the Battlefield Band from Scotland) and John Conolly (beloved raconteur of songs and stories pertaining to Grimsby\, among them the now-classic Fiddler’s Green). He played for festivals\, concert halls\, private living rooms and pubs in Britain\, Ireland\, China\, Australia\, New Zealand\, Canada\, the United States\, Germany\, Russia\, Japan . . . . this list goes on. Known for his trademark guitar style—primarily using alternate tunings—Rob remains a sought-after accompanist and session musician. \nProbably the most exciting element of the duo is the collaborative aspect of their latest compositions. Janie’s lyrics buoyed by Rob’s arrangements reflect a sensitive and compelling grasp of contemporary concerns\, whether it be anti-immigration policies (Lady Liberty) or the simple reminder that we set an example for future generations (For the Love of It All). But just as often\, their songs—and their on-stage banter\, for that matter—are laced with humor (sometimes bawdy!) and spill out with galvanizing energy (Whitby Ale). \nWhether they sing of long-ago tragedy\, retell a campfire ghost story or offer up a song of social justice\, their music invites audience participation\, and that\, to their mind\, remains the most gratifying aspect of any given performance.

SUMMARY:Dedham Friday Folk Coffeehouse Presents Crowes Pasture at 7:30 PM on 6/20!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell \nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its 8th concert of the 2024-2025 season featuring the Crowes Pasture at First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, June 20\, 2025 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $15 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nWe love the origin story of Crowes Pasture\, which is Andy Rogovin and Monique Byrne. The couple was putting one of their children to bed. They sang a song and broke into quiet harmony to fill out the lullaby. As they carefully closed the door on the sleeping child\, they looked at each other and said\, “That was fun.” \nThey have been serious about that fun ever since. Lots of original music\, three albums and two EPs later\, they have won an international acoustic music award\, received numerous folk music award nominations and can be found touring on both coasts\, Canada and in the UK. One of the things we love about this duo is the way they take a look at what’s happening around them\, and to them\, when they write songs. But they love a good cover\, too: Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen\, Woody Guthrie. You’ll find their music rooted in the folk tradition that speaks to hearts that are joyful\, broken\, and longing for peace and justice. They know there’s poetry in whatever is right here\, right now. And the harmonies just keep coming. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and First Friday Jazz & Classical Concerts\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events.

With roots\, rock\, bluegrass\, jazz\, and classical influences\, George (on guitar) and Charles (on bass) aim to capture their singer-songwriter sensibilities in a unique blended voice\, at once enthralling and intimate\, groovy and serene. The duo is a fusion of each brother’s unique musical journey\, and the result is a music all its own\, filled with vocal harmonies\, instrumental virtuosity\, and a genuine love of song.

SUMMARY:Caite Curtis with opener Connor Garvey
DESCRIPTION:“Catie Curtis is an artist whose songs unarm me\, move me to put down my defenses and just be with them. She lures me in through her kindness and respect for all beings. I have been listening to her music for years\, she is an inspiration to me. She knows the power of gentleness\, and the vulnerability in her voice has always undone me.” – Mary Gauthier\, award winning singer/songwriter \n“STOP AND LISTEN! What Connor Garvey hears\, and what he plays\, is worth your time… he’ll get you to listen for the sound of the pulses all around you. Garvey is something like a cross between Paul Simon and Rufus Wainwright\, with a bounce and a smile\, but also every now and then a wry turn that makes you pick your head up.” – Sam Pfiefle\, The Portland Phoenix \nBIO \nCatie Curtis\nFor over 25 years\, Catie toured full-time in the US and Europe\, releasing 14 recordings and selling over 250\,000 CDs (not to mention streaming and downloads). She has recorded for major (EMI Guardian) and independent (Rykodisc\, Vanguard and Compass) labels\, collaborating with some of the finest musicians and producers in the country. Her songs have been featured in several films and multiple tv shows\, and she performed several times at the White House during the Obama administration. Her audience knows she’s not afraid to speak up about political issues and to stand up for the LGBTQ community. She’s intensely grateful for those years on the road\, and honored to know that her music has been an integral part of so many people’s lives. \nIn 2017\, Catie explored a desire to work locally rather than spending so much time on the road. She got a master’s degree in counseling and is now a psychotherapist in Newburyport\, MA. She seeks a balance between her work as a therapist and an artist. “I still need and want to create music. Writing is still how I make sense of my life and the world around me. I still love getting out to play shows and connect with people.” Fortunately\, it’s important to her fans\, too. \n  \nConnor Garvey \nConnor Garvey is an award-winning singer-songwriter from Portland\, Maine\, with the amiable presence of an entertainer\, the lyrical depth of a poet\, and the enchantment of a storyteller.\n\nGarvey leaves audiences uplifted and inspired through a positive message delivered in a way that proves you can be optimistic and self-aware without being boring.\n\nFirst time listeners often are drawn to Garvey’s engaging performance style\, accomplished musicianship\, and memorable melodies. But his lyrics project a depth and sincerity that allow the observant listener to find meaning beyond the catchy hook. “Connor isn’t afraid to tackle some heavy-duty subjects” writes Americana Highways. \nhttps://www.connorgarveysongs.com/biography

SUMMARY:Goodnight Moonshine - Molly Venter and Eben Pariser
DESCRIPTION:QUOTES \n“Pariser’s harmonic sensibilities are wide\, imaginative\, while Venter’s singular voice recalls pre-diva singers who could lay out emotions without melodrama.”\n-Jedd Beaudoin\, NPR \n“Goodnight Moonshine is singer-songwriter Molly Venter and guitarist Eben Pariser\, and their particular magic they create together is fluid\, evocative\, and absolutely mesmerizing. Watching them perform you get the sense that they aren’t just delivering a song\, they ARE the music. As partners in life and in art\, their deep authenticity and give-and-take collaboration is inspiring\, inclusive and beautiful to witness.”\n-Beth Wood\, Singer-Songwriter / Sisters Folk Festival \n“Let’s begin with the voice of Molly Venter. It’s velvety smooth. It’s biker-chick smoky. It has a jaw-dropping range and control that can bend from soulful to gritty to playful and back again.” \n  -Lisa Reisman\, New Haven Register \n  \nBIO \nGoodnight Moonshine is a guitar and vocal duet\, and a musical marriage in all senses. The Duo combines the evocative voice and songwriting of Molly Venter\, with Eben Pariser’s adventurous guitar playing. The result is folk music with a depth of improvisation and tonal subtlety usually reserved for jazz. \nMolly is well known for her sublime singing in the prominent female-vocal-group Red Molly\, while Eben cut his teeth as a street performer in New York City\, playing guttural music of New Orleans with his band Roosevelt Dime. \nMolly’s enviable voice\, which can be called both “biker-chick smoky” (New Haven Register)\, and “like silk” (American Songwriter Magazine)\, has taken her career to highlights including Tønder Festival in Denmark\, Kate Wolf Fest in CA\, and multiple placements on television and film. In Goodnight Moonshine she is in full force as a songwriter. Her trance-induced stream-of-consciousness writing style results in compositions that probe the depths of her inner experience. Her hit song “Hold It All”\, recorded with Red Molly and performed regularly with Goodnight Moonshine\, questions the meaning of life\, and grapples with acceptance\, with honesty and heart usually reserved for literary writers- which she also is- she writes a weekly column on Patreon.com \nStarting as a blues guitarist in his teens\, Eben’s imagination was quickly captured by classic jazz\, which he studied at the Oberlin Conservatory. “Pariser’s harmonic sensibilities are wide\, imaginative” (NPR)\, and his career has involved singing lead and playing bass with Roosevelt Dime\, playing drums and being musical director of Red Molly- but it is his love of jazz and improvising on display in Goodnight Moonshine. A natural producer\, Eben has 8 studio records under his belt for himself and other artists\, and recently launched the new record label\, Equitone Records. \nAfter cutting several records\, and experimenting with limitless creative possibilities of studio production\, Goodnight Moonshine is now thrilling audiences as an acoustic guitar duo. The format allows them to focus entirely on each other’s gifts\, and enter a hypnotic trance\, a cycle of responsive vocal inspiration and guitar improvisation that deepens throughout the show. It is a main-line of the very best that both artists have to offer\, and perhaps why their single-mike show has become an unlikely festival act- in 2023 they are slated to play Arts And Ideas (CT)\, Red Ants Pants (MT)\, and Sisters Folk Fest (OR). \nGuitar and vocal duos are rare and few come to mind\, but the ones that do\, such as Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings\, and The Milk Carton Kids\, have achieved and integration between singular talents in a format that is both genre-less and grounded in the commonness of two guitars\, two voices. Goodnight Moonshine is taking their own stab at this unusual and deeply personal approach. Their show is punctuated by songs and banter that openly explore the complexities of their relationship to each other\, the Creator\, birth\, life\, death\, and what happens when\, “the honeymoon ends?” For Molly and Eben\, It is the way they make space for each other while staying true to themselves that defines this music\, and marriage. \nGoodnight Moonshine has two studio records; their self-titled debut album Goodnight Moonshine (2013)\, and I’m The Only One Who Will Tell You Your Bad (2018)\, as well as two singles; Harder Than It Should Be (2021)\, and What Do You Wanna Know (2022)\, all produced by Pariser. \ngoodnightmoonshine.com/press

DESCRIPTION:Covid! \nPostponed til 8/17 \nRSVP to info@lakeviewhouseconcerts.org to reserve a seat. You must get an invitation email from me to attend.\nFor more info about The Malvinas see themalvinas.com/\nCall 508 528 0026 for questions\, please leave a message. \n$25 suggested donation in the tip jar but payment is optional. 100% of the donations go directly to the artists. There are no tickets\, but please RSVP so I know how many will be here. Join us at 6PM here for a potluck dinner. Bring a dish\, we supply drinks and ice cream. \nWith roots all over North America\, the Malvinas pull together a broad palette of regional flavours including: the blues-tinged grooves of the deep South\, the spicy Cajun flavours of Louisiana\, the Celtic modes of Eastern Canada and the groovy troubadour tradition of the Catskill region. Alternating lead vocalists\, tight harmonies and quirky instrumentation (banjo\, guitar\, tenor guitar\, mandolins and violin) create a high energy sound that never forgets that to make great music\, you start with a great song. \nIndividually and collectively\, The Malvinas have been fortunate to work as side women and to share the stage with some really great artists including: Bruce Daigrepont\, Jack Hardy\, Eliza Gilkyson\, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Tim Grimm. Past appearances include: The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival\, Festival Internationale\, The Kerrville Folk Festival and WFMT ‘s Folkstage. \nabout our name “Malvina Reynolds was a singer\, songwriter and activist. Reflecting the cultural and political turmoil of the day\, her powerful\, sometimes somber\, sometimes lighthearted songs address issues still pertinent today: environmental deterioration\, women’s rights\, workers’ rights\, social justice\, and the homogenization of culture.” \nThe malvinas are \nLisa “I am not interested in what you think” Markley (banjo\, guitar and vocals). After graduating from North Texas with a degree in music\, Lisa melted down her trombone to make a belly button ring. Formerly a member of the way cool band Akoustik Nerve\, Lisa is inspired by the music of Joni Mitchell and the Subdudes – and- she thinks that Patricia Barber is just the coolest thing since fresh cilantro. Lisa is also an award winning songwriter with a inimitable groove oriented edge. \nGina “the hopeful romantic” Forsyth (guitar\, violin\, vocals). Since fleeing the Bible Belt an undisclosed number of years ago\, Gina has been (in no particular order): a fiddle player in several Cajun bands\, a folk DJ on a college station\, a college student\, a civil servant\, a movie extra for a day\, and a drummer in a punk rock band for all of five minutes. Her favorite artists include the McGarrigle Sisters\, Ralph Stanley\, Belton Richard\, and a host of friends she has played and recorded with over the last several years. \nBeth “the irritating optimist” Cahill (mandolins\, tenor guitar and vocals). Beth decided to pursue music after nearly being crushed to death at a Violent Femmes concert. She never gets tired of listening to Glenn Gould’s recordings of the Goldberg Variations and trying to explain 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.   Her influences include: Rickie Lee Jones\, The Roches\, and Richard Thompson. She is from Canada and has no sense of humour.

SUMMARY:Darlingside
DESCRIPTION:Darlingside – Everything Is Alive \nEverything Is Alive\, Darlingside’s fourth LP\, marks a subtle but remarkable departure for the Boston-based quartet NPR once described as “exquisitely arranged\, literary minded\, baroque folk-pop.” While the album retains much of the lushness and sophistication of Extralife (2018) and Fish Pond Fish (2020)\, the band’s latest work decisively exposes and differentiates the individual voices of the four songwriters—a daring reinvention for a group known for ubiquitous vocal harmonies. Grappling with change both personal and universal\, with quandaries domestic and existential\, Everything Is Alive is an album about loss and the struggle for a semblance of redemption. \nComprised of Don Mitchell\, Auyon Mukharji\, Harris Paseltiner and David Senft\, four likeminded multi-instrumentalists who first met at Williams College in 2009\, Darlingside’s career has been defined by the elegance of their compositions and the unity of their four voices. Their talent for harmony and melodic world-building is part of what garnered praise from outlets like NPR\, Rolling Stone and The New Yorker\, and what has created demand worldwide for their extraordinary live performances. Becoming beautifully unindividualized has\, in other words\, worked very well for Darlingside in the past. With a vigor and discipline more common to graduate-level writing workshops than to indie rock\, Darlingside has\, over the years\, experimented with all manners of idiosyncratic methods for elevating and upholding a truly democratic process of songwriting—processes that include multiple rounds of group writing and recording exercises—all with the aim of escaping the trap that bands with multiple songwriters often fall into: ego-driven infighting and artistic incoherence. \nOn Everything Is Alive\, then\, Darlingside is taking a risk. Nudged by the limitations created by pandemic isolation\, as well as through other more voluntary catalysts\, the album\, which was produced and recorded by the band and mixed by Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket\, Sufjan Stevens\, Iron and Wine)\, foregrounds in a sustained and heretofore untried way the individual voices of each member. Where once the harmonies formed a hard-won sonic unification\, Everything Is Alive showcases the four singers as they alternate (more or less) song for song\, an approach that rewards listeners with a sense of personal ownership and\, therefore\, a new degree of intimacy and nuance. \nDon’t misunderstand: Everything Is Alive is still very much a collaborative effort—many of the same meticulous rituals and exercises went into this effort as went into Extralife and Fish Pond Fish. The difference here is that the band has given itself permission to plumb new depths\, to add extra dimension to what was already a highly dialed-in aesthetic. And the results are compelling\, not only due to the intimacy itself\, but for the way such intimacy is counterpointed or juxtaposed against Darlingside’s trademark lusciousness. Present still are the beds of enveloping harmonies\, as in the stunning (mostly) a cappella “How Long Again.” Retained also are the textured polyrhythms\, the infectious body percussion\, a triumphant horn section to bolster the earworm chorus of “Baking Soda” and a sobering cello quartet to elevate the heartbreak of “Lose The Keys.” The difference is that on Everything Is Alive these moments have been set against quieter\, and thus contrasting\, depths of solitude and vulnerability. \nIn this way\, Everything Is Alive\, which was begun in 2021\, seems a continuation of 2020’s Fish Pond Fish. A sequel\, perhaps; the second half of a COVID double album. Where Fish Pond Fish built its lush sonic landscape around vibrant images of woolgathering\, fruit picking and returning home\, Everything Is Alive confronts the multitude of challenges that arise when “home at last” becomes “when\, dear god\, will I be free of this stasis and grief?” Lose the keys\, the marbles\, lose a parent/lose the count\, lose the plot/it’s the losing that counts/is it not sings Mitchell on “Lose the Keys.” Elsewhere one encounters images of walking in circles\, of domestic frustration\, and of unabashedly falling apart\, all of which work together as an acknowledgment of a despair that must be confronted before redemption can be made possible. “Am I almost out of the dark?” asks Senft on “Can’t Help Falling Apart”—a track that\, it turns out\, helped Senft arrive at the realization that he could not continue as a touring member of the band. \nIn other places on the album\, such as opening track “Green Light\,” a propensity for retreating into the self is refuted by an attempt to discern the small but tangible glory of the world before us. The song meditates on the humble beauty contained within things as (seemingly) drab as sidewalks and concrete and rust. Built on an iPhone memo of a strumming mandocello\, “Green Light” is notable for another reason: in its mantra-like worldliness it is unlike anything Darlingside has done before. Reminiscent of George Harrison circa “Within You Without You\,” the track\, itself a creative leap\, signals the heretofore untrod territory the album at large goes on to explore. \nVivid images and striking turns of phrase abound on Everything Is Alive. Expectations are commonly inverted or exploded—exploded curiously\, with nuance\, but exploded no less—as in these lines from “All The Lights In The City”: maybe working is what makes us live\, or maybe it’s living/sky is always hanging blue above the cloud/but the path of no resistance will wear you out. On “Sea Dogs\,” the track that contains the album’s title\, Paseltiner sings over an effervescent dreamscape: I can’t wake up all the time/or even half the time or/even be on time. Such lines capture the disorientation and desperation that pervade this album. And yet\, later in the same song\, come the lines which align poignantly with the song’s dreamy sonic context: when up in the clouds are sea dogs/and kites and big white basketballs/the backyard is thickening/ how is it everything/ everything is alive/alive\, alive. “Sea Dogs” is both the album’s thesis and a bridge to Fish Pond Fish\, modifying that album’s motifs about nature as a reflection of the self to ask whether nature is not also a means of escaping or transcending the confines of selfhood altogether. \nIt’s a rare thing and becoming rarer by the day: a group of musicians with that emulsifying magic to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. And to see Darlingside perform live is to confirm this special chemistry. With the release of Everything Is Alive the band will\, for the first time\, take to the road without Dave Senft. Instead of filling his spot directly\, the band has wisely chosen to honor the special chemistry of the foursome by letting those arrangements live on the recordings without obligation to faithfully recreate them onstage. While Dave remains a contributing member of the band\, on tour Darlingside will perform in a completely different configuration altogether—a configuration that will\, at times\, include the album’s drummer Ben Burns\, singer Molly Parden\, and others—proving again how the group can adroitly rearrange themselves for the breaking of a new and different day.\nhttps://www.darlingside.com/about
