SUMMARY:Steve Poltz
DESCRIPTION:You all know that music cruise I talk about called Cayamo….well…Yes\, that is where we met Steve Poltz\, 3 years in a row because no one can ever get enough of his energy\, the stories with so much humor and inspiration\, his view of life\, his songs……We love Steve Poltz and I am so happy that he will be at The Green River Festival June 25th which helped me bring him to NH. \nIn 20 years since his full-length solo debut\, One Left Shoe\, Steve Poltz blessed the world’s ears with thirteen solo records\, spanning the acclaimed 2010 Dreamhouse and most recently\, Shine On in 2019. NPR summed it up best\, “Critics and fans alike now regard Poltz as a talented and prolific songwriter.” Evoking themes of “hope\, love\, contemplation\, celebration of Wednesday\, pharmacists\, and the fact that windows are not inanimate objects and they sometimes have conversations with each other\,” Shine On represents Steve at his most inspired and insightful. The opener and title track pairs a delicate vocal with lithely plucked acoustic strings as he urges everyone to\, “Shine on\, shine on.” \nOver the years\, the Nashville-based troubadour has built a fascinating solo catalog\, earmarked by his debut\, One Left Shoe\, Dreamhouse\, Folk Singer\, and 2019’s Shine On. No Depression crowned him\, “A sardonic provocateur with a lighthearted acoustic-driven wit\, suggesting at times a sunnier\, less psychedelic Todd Snider\, or maybe a less wan\, washed Jackson Brown\,” while the Associated Press dubbed him “part busker\, part Iggy Pop and part Robin Williams\, a freewheeling folkie with a quick wit and big heart.” \nAmong other collaborations\, GRAMMY-winning bluegrass phenom Billy Strings tapped him to co-write “Leaders” on 2021’s Renewal and he’s co-written with Molly Tuttle\, Sierra Hull\, Nicki Bluhm\, Oliver Wood and even Mojo Nixon.

SUMMARY:Antje Duvekot with openers Ash and Eric
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets cost $12 for adults and $5 for youth age 18 and under. At the door\, the suggested contribution is $14 for adults\, $5 for youth\, and $28 for families. \ntickets and more information \nAntje Duvekot has extensive touring experience\, criss-crossing the US and Europe many times. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined the The Celtic Connections Festival in Scotland and the Tonder Festival in Denmark. She’s the winner of some of the top songwriting awards\, including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and\, in one of the nation’s top music markets\, the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. \nHailing from the gritty heart of the Industrial Revolution — Worcester\, Massachusetts — Ash and Eric find consolation in discovering beauty from the challenges of being artists living in one of the most stubbornly independent cities in the north east. Their musings reflect the hope and pain we all experience in life. Sung in voices as vulnerable and honest as their lyrics\, their songs feel like a sincere welcome\, a shoulder to lean on\, and a hand to hold at the end of a long day. In addition to top tier writing that No Depression says will have you “…coming away from many of these [songs] cleansed\,” their warm harmonies\, swirling acoustic guitars\, and easy stage presence have earned them a dedicated following in the North East folk/singer-songwriter scene. Their highly-anticipated third LP was recorded\, mixed and produced entirely by Eric at a boarding school in Western Massachusetts; and will be released in early 2022 alongside an accompanying short film.

SUMMARY:Ellis Paul - 6/11/22
DESCRIPTION:“DESPITE HIS SUCCESS AND SENSE OF HISTORY\, MR. PAUL REMAINS AN ARTIST WITH HIS EYE ON THE FUTURE AND AN INTEREST IN DISCOVERING THE TRANSFORMATIVE POTENTIAL IN HIS MUSIC.” – THE NEW YORK TIMES \nThough some may refer to Ellis Paul as a folksinger\, he is more\, for lack of a better word\, a singular storyteller\, a musician whose words reach out from inside and yet also express the feelings\, thoughts and sensibilities that most people can relate to in one way or another\, regardless of age or upbringing. The exhilaration of the open road. A celebration of heroes. The hope for redemption. Descriptions of those things that are both near and dear. \nEllis Paul’s music tells stories of people and places that reflect larger truths about us all. His song Plastic Soldier\, for example\, offers homage to a wounded soldier returning from Afghanistan. But in reality\, these stories are a continuation of tales Paul has told for decades\, over the expanse of nineteen albums. He is a storyteller with empathy\, fine eyes and an understanding that – even though we live in a soulless\, indifferent world – our music doesn’t have to reflect our culture. He’s an observer\, a philosopher\, and an astute storyteller who shares with his listeners the life lessons he’s learned. \nHe received numerous critical kudos (15 Boston Music Awards alone)\, inclusion in several blockbuster movie soundtracks\, commercials\, TV shows and he has headlined stages both near and far. “I’ve got a car with over 475\,000 miles on it\, and it’s my third road vehicle\,” Paul declares. “I’ve been doing 200 shows a year for over twenty years. There isn’t a town in the country where I won’t find a friend.” Paul goes to practically any place a microphone beckons and a crowd of the folk faithful awaits. He’s become a staple at the Newport Folk Festival\, played Carnegie Hall\, and venues from Alaska to Miami\, Paris and London. His endless travels have been featured in 3000 Miles – part concert film\, part documentary\, part instructional video – which provides further perspective on both the man and his music. \nEllis also released a pair of children’s albums\, earning him honors from the Parent’s Choice Foundation for both. 2014’s The Hero In You has been turned into a picture book\, detailing the lives of great American heroes which earned him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Maine. He turned it into an educational program which educates the minds of children on America’s important influencers. He sings about heroes such as Thomas Edison\, Rosa Parks\, Woody Guthrie\, Rachel Carson\, and Jackie Robinson to encourage children to find the hero in themselves. \nMuch more – https://www.ellispaul.com/

SUMMARY:April Verch and Cody Walters
DESCRIPTION:This house concert will take place on the covered patio of the hosts’ home in Rockport\, Massachusetts. The suggested contribution is $20\, payable at the door by cash\, check\, or Venmo. RSVP to whalecoveproductions@gmail.com to make a reservation and receive the venue’s street address and more details. \nTo listen to April Verch and Cody Walters is to be immersed in tradition. To watch them perform is to be transported. Be it regional Canadian roots\, American old-time\, 50’s Country\, Scandinavian folk music\, or something original that sounds as though it’s been around for a century—the one common thread is their love and reverence for the music and traditions that have been passed down to them. \nHusband and wife duo April Verch & Cody Walters is a true partnership of kindred musical spirits\, each a world-class musician in their own right. Combining their unique backgrounds from Verch’s native Ottawa Valley and Walters’ heartland roots in Kansas\, their music showcases endless creativity and versatility— transitioning effortlessly from traditional Ottawa Valley step dancing and fiddle tunes\, to old-time fiddle-banjo duets with tight-knit vocal harmonies\, to innovative sandpaper foot percussion\, all contrasted against Verch’s sweet soprano voice. \nEven now\, after more than two decades leading her own band and with 14 albums in her name (two of which were nominated for JUNO Awards\, among other honors)\, there is nothing that fulfills Verch or gives her more joy than playing and sharing her music with the world. “It’s like the reward for everything else\,” she says.

SUMMARY:Oshima Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Maine-based indie duo\, Oshima Brothers’ have been creating music together since childhood. The brothers blend songs from the heart with blood harmonies to produce a “roots-based pop sound that is infectious.” (NPR) On stage\, Sean and Jamie offer lush vocals\, live looping\, foot percussion\, electric and acoustic guitars\, vintage keyboard and bass – often all at once. They want every show to feel like a deep breath\, a dance party and a sonic embrace. \nWhen not recording or touring they find time to film and produce their own music videos\, tie their own shoes and cook elaborate feasts. Maine Public Radio’s Sara Willis describes their songs as “beautiful\, those brother harmonies can’t be beat. They are uplifting and\, let’s face it\, we need uplifting these days.” \nmuch more https://www.oshimabrothers.com/

SUMMARY:April Verch Duo - LIVE\, IN-PERSON
DESCRIPTION:To listen to April Verch and Cody Walters is to be immersed in tradition. \nVerch and Walters began playing together in 2007 when Walters joined the April Verch Band as their bassist. Initially formed as a pickup band centered around Verch’s own fiddle and dance stylings in 2000\, the band grew and blossomed into an established trio of world-class musicians\, spanning several musical traditions and backgrounds\, yet all united in their mission to share the music they love. Together they have traveled to four continents\, performed in fourteen countries\, and played everywhere from tiny pubs and dusty festival workshops all the way to legendary stages such as the Kennedy Center and the Ryman Auditorium. In 2018—fittingly amidst their ever-busy tour schedule—April and Cody were married. \nDuring the heart of COVID lockdowns in 2020\, the couple began performing as a duo out of necessity\, and learned firsthand that sometimes\, art born of necessity can yield unexpectedly beautiful results. They developed new material\, arrangements and a concert performance that hum with the ease and playfulness that can only be cultivated through deep understanding and trust—as musicians and as partners. \nThe duo’s diverse repertoire and unbridled passion come to life on stage with a presence that is versatile\, robust\, and masterfully executed. Audiences remark at their sincerity in sharing stories between tunes. Verch’s delicate voice\, energetic footwork\, sand paper foot percussion and stunning playing (sometimes combined all at once!) are jaw-dropping. Walters’ melodic banjo stylings\, solid rhythm guitar accompaniment and tasteful vocal harmonies are at once understated and brilliant\, dueting with Verch’s skills in glorious harmony. Their ability to preserve the authentic folk traditions of the past and reintroduce them into the musical landscape of the present is a testament to their masterful musicianship and widespread appeal. \nTogether\, she and Walters are exemplary tradition-bearing performers: never forgetting the roots of the music\, that connection to the people out there in the audience or on the dance floor\, to the community sparked by a good song. “It’s about joining together to celebrate everyday life\, through music. We’re all in this together.” And so together they press onward: diving deep into musical tradition\, bringing people together and forging connections\, and sharing their insight and genuine love for the music they play so well.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Sloan Wainwright and Cosy Sheridan\, LIVE!!!
DESCRIPTION:The Linden Tree Coffeehouse presents: \nAn Evening with Sloan Wainwright and Cosy Sheridan\, LIVE IN PERSON! \nSat. May 7th at 7:30 pm at the Wakefield-Lynnfield Methodist Church.    $20         \nNew venue for this show to allow Streaming options too.  Please read rules for attending in person. thank you.  \nThe Linden Tree Coffeehouse is presenting its final show of its  37th season  with a special event on Saturday\, May 7 at 7:30pm\,  our first Live concert in two years.  “An Evening with Sloan Wainwright and Cosy Sheridan” will be held at the Wakefield-Lynnfield Methodist Church  at 273 Vernon St\, Wakefield.  The location change is so that we can still offer Live Streaming to those who are not yet vaccinated or too far to come in person. \nLongtime friends\, songwriters  Sloan Wainwright and Cosy Sheridan share a joy of each other’s music and artistry on stage in an upbeat\, energetic and moving evening of sharing songs. \nKnown for her warm and welcoming contralto voice which could “fell a redwood\,” Sloan Wainwright is a member of that Wainwright Family Tree which includes Loudon Wainwright (her brother) and Rufus (her nephew). Defying standard categorization\, with 10 original CDs under her belt\, Sloan has a command of a variety of American musical styles: pop\, folk\, jazz and blues. Her incredible gift is not only her unique songwriting ability but also her dramatically voiced rendition of original songs. She performs with power house guitarist Steve Murphy. \nCosy Sheridan has been called one of the era’s  finest and most thoughtful songwriters.  The Albuquerque Journal dubbed her “ a Buddhist monk in a 12-step program trapped in the body of a singer-songwriter.” She first appeared on the national folk scene in 1992 when she won the songwriting contests at The Kerrville Folk Festival and The Telluride Bluegrass Festival and released her critically acclaimed CD Quietly Led.  She has been on the road ever since\, playing clubs\, concert halls\, and coffeehouses across the country. \n”Her user-friendly musical philosophy sets her happily apart from the myopic\, self-involved songwriters\,” wrote The Boston Globe. “ She is a wonderfully lively\, very funny and enormously amiable entertainer with a keen and wicked eye for the excesses of our fast-food\, tv-happy  and noisome culture.”  Backed up by her bass player Charlie Koch\, she plays a percussive bluesy guitar style\, often in open tunings and occasionally with two capos on the guitar neck. \nTickets for those attending are $20\,  cash or check at the door.  Please reserve your seats by calling 781-246-2836. Performers have requested that folks showing their vaccination cards and wearing masks may attend. Only bottled soft drinks & water will be sold.  The church is easy to find from 95\, take Vernon St. exit and head towards Wakefield. Just after traffic light is the church with a parking lot in the back\, convenient to the entrance. \nFor those watching the show on line\, please donate to our  Linden Tree performers.  Our suggested donation is $20.   There will be a link to PayPal or checks may be mailed to Linden Tree Coffeehouse\, 8 Dexter Lane\, Wakefield\, MA 01880. Thank you. \nTo view any of our shows\, visit our website: www.LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org\, then chose YouTube or Facebook: Note our previous streaming shows are still available for viewing on our YouTube and Facebook pages. \nThe Linden Tree Coffeehouse operates\, in part\, with thanks to partial support from Wakefield’s Art Council of the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Ivy Chord Coffeehouse in Reading.  For more information: 781-246-2836\,   www.LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org \n

SUMMARY:Jon Shain and FJ Ventre with opener Kemp Harris
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets cost $12 for adults and $5 for youth age 18 and under. At the door\, the suggested contribution is $14 for adults\, $5 for youth\, and $28 for families. \ntickets and more information \nJon Shain grew up in Haverhill\, Massachusetts\, and FJ Ventre grew up in Beverly. They began making music together in 1982 when they met in high school. \nJon headed south to Duke University in North Carolina to study American History and continue his musical journey. In addition to studying with jazz professor Paul Jeffrey\, he had the good fortune to learn the piedmont blues tradition firsthand by playing in Big Boy Henry’s backing band. Jon won the 2019 International Blues Challenge in the solo/duo category. He has shared stages with the likes of Keb’ Mo’\, John Hiatt\, Little Feat\, and Jackson Browne. \nFJ went to University of Massachusetts-Lowell\, earning a B.A. in Music Performance and Sound Recording. Since relocating to North Carolina\,  he has been performing as a sought after sideman\, engineering at his own Good Luck Studio\, and operating graphic design firm Tadpole Designs. \nWith FJ joining Jon in North Carolina\, they resumed their musical partnership. They collaborated on the 2019 CD Tomorrow Will Be Yesterday Soon and their new CD Never Found a Way to Tame the Blues\, release in 2021. \nJon and FJ are Old Sloop veterans. They performed as a duo in 2016\, and with blues harpist Bill Newton in 2011. \nKemp Harris defies categorization. He is a singer and songwriter; a master weaver of American musical styles. He’s also an actor\, activist\, author\, and storyteller\, and an award-winning educator who has taught young public school students for more than 40 years. \nKemp has acted in numerous films and TV shows such as SMILF (Showtime)\, and is comfortable sharing the stage with artists such as Taj Mahal\, Koko Taylor\, and Gil Scott-Heron\, as well as performing shows with his smokin’ band. He wrote and performed “If Loneliness Was Black” for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Complexions Dance Company. Kemp has also composed for WGBH Public Television/Boston. \nKemp’s powers of observation\, his unique gift for shining a light on our modern world and what it means to be alive in these times\, have only deepened over a lifetime devoted to the most basic and profound of pursuits\, genuine human connection. Whether he’s in the classroom\, on a film set\, leading a workshop\, or performing on the concert stage\, at the end of the day\, Kemp says\, “I’m an old black man telling stories and spreading the love.” \nKemp Harris is a thief\, a tease and a heartbreaker. He knows too much. And it’s all right there when he sings. Beautifully there. He’ll take your breath away.\n– NPR’s On Point

SUMMARY:Tom Rush with piano player Seth Glier
DESCRIPTION:Now celebrating five decades of touring\, Tom has been thrilling audiences here and abroad with hits like No Regrets\, Circle Game\, Remember Song\, Urge for Going and Merrimack County. \nTom Rush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound. He helped shape the folk revival in the ’60s\, the folk-rock movement of the ‘70s\, and then the renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s\, his music having left its stamp on generations of artists. James Taylor\, Emmylou Harris\, Tom Petty and Garth Brooks have cited Tom a major influence.  His early recordings introduced the world to the work of Joni Mitchell\, Jackson Browne and James Taylor.  Subsequently\, his Club\n47 concerts brought national attention to emerging artists such as Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin. \nAs vital and engaging as ever\, Tom is still doing what audiences love him for: writing and playing …passionately\, tenderly…knitting together the musical traditions and talents of our times. He’s also celebrating a YouTube hit\, The Remember Song\, that’s gone viral with over 7 million views. \nTom currently tours either as a solo act\, or — in keeping with his life-long interest in introducing emerging artists to a wider audience —accompanied by up-and-coming Singer/Songwriter Seth Glier.  In either format he continues to captivate sold out audiences of loyal fans.

SUMMARY:Emerald Rae and The Bombadils
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets cost $12 for adults and $5 for youth age 18 and under. At the door\, the suggested contribution is $14 for adults\, $5 for youth\, and $28 for families. \ntickets and more information \nThis co-bill pairs two performers who create some of the most original music you will ever hear. \nEmerald Rae is a fiddler and folksinger originally from Gloucester and now living in Vermont. Roots Music Report hails her as “a spell-caster of no small skill… maxing out her axe’s potential in the service of her consistently compelling melodies” and recognizes her self-titled 2018 release as “one of the year’s more fetching releases”. She was chosen as a Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist and is quickly gaining ground as one of the top new artists to follow this year. Pairing ornamented vocals with groovy percussive fiddle\, Emerald pushes the boundaries of the imagination with a refreshingly colorful palate. \nCanadian Folk Music Award nominees The Bombadils bring together bluegrass\, Celtic\, and singer-songwriter traditions with front-porch style and classical grace. Canadian arts journalist Bob Mersereau describes their music as “folk tunes done with musical adventure and sophistication” and Elmore Magazine calls it “an enchanting folk romp.” Sarah Frank and Luke Fraser met in 2009 while studying music at McGill University in Montreal\, initially performing as an Irish pub band as a way to break up their studies. In 2015 they released the full-length album\, “Grassy Roads\, Wandering Feet\,”  which was quickly followed by “New Shoes” in 2016 which was nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards and won Folk Music Ontario’s Album of the Year award.

SUMMARY:Jud Caswell at The Linden Tree\, virtually
DESCRIPTION:LINDEN TREE COFFEEHOUSE APRIL 9 at 7:30 \nLive Streaming show with New England Notable Singer-Songwriter \n  MAINE’S JUD CASWELL\, another New England Notable \nPay what you can\, suggested $20pp \nThe Linden Tree Coffeehouse continues its 37th season with Maine’s Jud Caswell.  The live concert will be broadcast on youtube and facebook with limited audience at our Covid alternative site. Jud has been the winners of several prestigious songwriting awards such as the Dave Carter Memorial Song Contest in Oregon\, the Ploweshares in Pennsylvania\, and Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk in Texas. Jud\, this New England Notable performer\, is more than a great singer and guitar player.  His songs are stories with beautiful images and interesting characters he brings to life.  www.LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org \nRich Warren in Sing Out Magazine described Jud Caswell as highly original and wise beyond his years!  Maine’s Jud Caswell is a little bit like a one-man folk festival. You’ve got your banjo picking\, your Irish drinking songs\, a rack of acoustic instruments\, and a deep catalog of award-winning originals. He’s often compared to James Taylor and David Wilcox\, but his songs draw on a long musical history and wide-ranging influences from jazz and Piedmont blues to contemporary folk and rock.  His sixth CD reflects his years full of music\, a celebration of life\, love\, family\, friends\, and all that is wonderful about midcoast Maine. His song\, Blackberry Time\, got him a lot of folk radio airplay and several singer-songwriting awards from Florida\, Oregon\, Texas\, and locally in Massachusetts.  Jud’s songs take you into his stories with clear images and characters while accompanying himself on his beautiful six-string guitar. \n The title song from his sixth CD\, “The Great Divide” was the #2 song on the Folk Alliance International Charts for October\, 2021! This song was inspired by his grandparents – a Maine couple who celebrated 70 anniversaries together. It starts off with his old family anecdote: “Nana was a registered Republican\, Pappy was a Democrat for life…” There was never a time I didn’t know that about them. And there was never a time that I saw any strife caused by it. A relationship like that seems almost inconceivable today. That makes me sad. And it makes me worried. It makes me want to find a way to reach out a hand – even when I feel it being slapped away. I take great pride in the fact that this song has been loved and shared by Democrats and Republicans alike. I hope my grandparents would be proud as well.”  www.JudCaswell.com \nPlease donate to our  Linden Tree performers. With few in-person gigs\, performers still need to pay rent and other living expenses.  Our suggested donation is $20.  Please donate whatever you are able. There will be a link to PayPal or checks may be mailed to Linden Tree Coffeehouse\, 8 Dexter Lane\, Wakefield\, MA 01880. Thank you. \nThe Linden Tree Coffeehouse operates\, in part\, with thanks to partial support from Wakefield’s Art Council of the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Ivy Chord Coffeehouse in Reading. \nTo view any of our shows\, visit our website: www.LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org\, then chose YouTube or Facebook: Note our previous streaming shows are still available for viewing on our YouTube and Facebook pages. \nFor more information about the Linden Tree Coffeehouse check our Facebook and webpages: LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org. or call 781-246-2836. \n

Her music is intimate and expansive\, inviting the listener into a familiar otherworld. Inspired by the mirrored relationship between physical and emotional landscapes\, Sumi’s music speaks of human experience through the language of the senses. \n“In recent years\, I have let myself lean into that space between things as a practice of listening\, and it feels like I become an animal led by my ear\, or my tongue\, or my hands\, toward a song.” \nSince 2015\, the Ontario-based songwriter has released three critically-acclaimed albums and toured her music across Canada\, parts of the U.S. and Europe. Solastalgia is a reflection on the feeling of “homesickness” related to our environment\, our relationships\, and ourselves. SUMMARY:John McCutcheon - 50 Years of Traditional Music
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 6th at 7:00 PM ET \nThis event is a part of a 4 show series. \nThough John is often thought of as one of the most prolific and powerful songwriters in folk music\, his roots are firmly planted in traditional music. As a young 20-year-old he traveled the Appalachians\, apprenticing himself to some of the greats of traditional Southern music. This concert will feature an homage to his many mentors\, selections from his field recordings housed at the Library of Congress’ Archive of American Folksong\, and some very special surprises.
