SUMMARY:April Verch Duo - LIVE\, IN-PERSON
DESCRIPTION:To listen to April Verch and Cody Walters is to be immersed in tradition. To watch them perform is to be transported. Be it regional Canadian roots\, American old-time\, 50’s Country\, Scandinavian folk music\, or something original that sounds as though it’s been around for a century—the one common thread is their love and reverence for the music and traditions that have been passed down to them. \nHusband and wife duo April Verch & Cody Walters is a true partnership of kindred musical spirits\, each a world-class musician in their own right. Combining their unique backgrounds from Verch’s native Ottawa Valley and Walters’ heartland roots in Kansas\, their music showcases endless creativity and versatility— transitioning effortlessly from traditional Ottawa Valley step dancing and fiddle tunes\, to old-time fiddle-banjo duets with tight-knit vocal harmonies\, to innovative sandpaper foot percussion\, all contrasted against Verch’s sweet soprano voice. \nVerch and Walters began playing together in 2007 when Walters joined the April Verch Band as their bassist. Initially formed as a pickup band centered around Verch’s own fiddle and dance stylings in 2000\, the band grew and blossomed into an established trio of world-class musicians\, spanning several musical traditions and backgrounds\, yet all united in their mission to share the music they love. Together they have traveled to four continents\, performed in fourteen countries\, and played everywhere from tiny pubs and dusty festival workshops all the way to legendary stages such as the Kennedy Center and the Ryman Auditorium. In 2018—fittingly amidst their ever-busy tour schedule—April and Cody were married. \nDuring the heart of COVID lockdowns in 2020\, the couple began performing as a duo out of necessity\, and learned firsthand that sometimes\, art born of necessity can yield unexpectedly beautiful results. They developed new material\, arrangements and a concert performance that hum with the ease and playfulness that can only be cultivated through deep understanding and trust—as musicians and as partners. \nThe duo’s diverse repertoire and unbridled passion come to life on stage with a presence that is versatile\, robust\, and masterfully executed. Audiences remark at their sincerity in sharing stories between tunes. Verch’s delicate voice\, energetic footwork\, sand paper foot percussion and stunning playing (sometimes combined all at once!) are jaw-dropping. Walters’ melodic banjo stylings\, solid rhythm guitar accompaniment and tasteful vocal harmonies are at once understated and brilliant\, dueting with Verch’s skills in glorious harmony. Their ability to preserve the authentic folk traditions of the past and reintroduce them into the musical landscape of the present is a testament to their masterful musicianship and widespread appeal. \nEven now\, after more than two decades leading her own band and with 14 albums in her name (two of which were nominated for JUNO Awards\, among other honors)\, there is nothing that fulfills Verch or gives her more joy than playing and sharing her music with the world. “It’s like the reward for everything else\,” she says. \nTogether\, she and Walters are exemplary tradition-bearing performers: never forgetting the roots of the music\, that connection to the people out there in the audience or on the dance floor\, to the community sparked by a good song. “It’s about joining together to celebrate everyday life\, through music. We’re all in this together.” And so together they press onward: diving deep into musical tradition\, bringing people together and forging connections\, and sharing their insight and genuine love for the music they play so well.

SUMMARY:Oshima Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Maine-based indie duo\, Oshima Brothers’ have been creating music together since childhood. The brothers blend songs from the heart with blood harmonies to produce a “roots-based pop sound that is infectious.” (NPR) On stage\, Sean and Jamie offer lush vocals\, live looping\, foot percussion\, electric and acoustic guitars\, vintage keyboard and bass – often all at once. They want every show to feel like a deep breath\, a dance party and a sonic embrace. \nWhen not recording or touring they find time to film and produce their own music videos\, tie their own shoes and cook elaborate feasts. Maine Public Radio’s Sara Willis describes their songs as “beautiful\, those brother harmonies can’t be beat. They are uplifting and\, let’s face it\, we need uplifting these days.” \nmuch more https://www.oshimabrothers.com/

SUMMARY:Ellis Paul
DESCRIPTION:“DESPITE HIS SUCCESS AND SENSE OF HISTORY\, MR. PAUL REMAINS AN ARTIST WITH HIS EYE ON THE FUTURE AND AN INTEREST IN DISCOVERING THE TRANSFORMATIVE POTENTIAL IN HIS MUSIC.” – THE NEW YORK TIMES \nThough some may refer to Ellis Paul as a folksinger\, he is more\, for lack of a better word\, a singular storyteller\, a musician whose words reach out from inside and yet also express the feelings\, thoughts and sensibilities that most people can relate to in one way or another\, regardless of age or upbringing. The exhilaration of the open road. A celebration of heroes. The hope for redemption. Descriptions of those things that are both near and dear. \nEllis Paul’s music tells stories of people and places that reflect larger truths about us all. His song Plastic Soldier\, for example\, offers homage to a wounded soldier returning from Afghanistan. But in reality\, these stories are a continuation of tales Paul has told for decades\, over the expanse of nineteen albums. He is a storyteller with empathy\, fine eyes and an understanding that – even though we live in a soulless\, indifferent world – our music doesn’t have to reflect our culture. He’s an observer\, a philosopher\, and an astute storyteller who shares with his listeners the life lessons he’s learned. \nHe received numerous critical kudos (15 Boston Music Awards alone)\, inclusion in several blockbuster movie soundtracks\, commercials\, TV shows and he has headlined stages both near and far. “I’ve got a car with over 475\,000 miles on it\, and it’s my third road vehicle\,” Paul declares. “I’ve been doing 200 shows a year for over twenty years. There isn’t a town in the country where I won’t find a friend.” Paul goes to practically any place a microphone beckons and a crowd of the folk faithful awaits. He’s become a staple at the Newport Folk Festival\, played Carnegie Hall\, and venues from Alaska to Miami\, Paris and London. His endless travels have been featured in 3000 Miles – part concert film\, part documentary\, part instructional video – which provides further perspective on both the man and his music. \nEllis also released a pair of children’s albums\, earning him honors from the Parent’s Choice Foundation for both. 2014’s The Hero In You has been turned into a picture book\, detailing the lives of great American heroes which earned him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Maine. He turned it into an educational program which educates the minds of children on America’s important influencers. He sings about heroes such as Thomas Edison\, Rosa Parks\, Woody Guthrie\, Rachel Carson\, and Jackie Robinson to encourage children to find the hero in themselves. \nMuch more – https://www.ellispaul.com/

SUMMARY:Antje Duvekot with openers Ash and Eric
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets cost $12 for adults and $5 for youth age 18 and under. At the door\, the suggested contribution is $14 for adults\, $5 for youth\, and $28 for families. \ntickets and more information \nAntje Duvekot has extensive touring experience\, criss-crossing the US and Europe many times. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined the The Celtic Connections Festival in Scotland and the Tonder Festival in Denmark. She’s the winner of some of the top songwriting awards\, including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and\, in one of the nation’s top music markets\, the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. \nHailing from the gritty heart of the Industrial Revolution — Worcester\, Massachusetts — Ash and Eric find consolation in discovering beauty from the challenges of being artists living in one of the most stubbornly independent cities in the north east. Their musings reflect the hope and pain we all experience in life. Sung in voices as vulnerable and honest as their lyrics\, their songs feel like a sincere welcome\, a shoulder to lean on\, and a hand to hold at the end of a long day. In addition to top tier writing that No Depression says will have you “…coming away from many of these [songs] cleansed\,” their warm harmonies\, swirling acoustic guitars\, and easy stage presence have earned them a dedicated following in the North East folk/singer-songwriter scene. Their highly-anticipated third LP was recorded\, mixed and produced entirely by Eric at a boarding school in Western Massachusetts; and will be released in early 2022 alongside an accompanying short film.

SUMMARY:Steve Poltz
DESCRIPTION:You all know that music cruise I talk about called Cayamo….well…Yes\, that is where we met Steve Poltz\, 3 years in a row because no one can ever get enough of his energy\, the stories with so much humor and inspiration\, his view of life\, his songs……We love Steve Poltz and I am so happy that he will be at The Green River Festival June 25th which helped me bring him to NH. \nIn 20 years since his full-length solo debut\, One Left Shoe\, Steve Poltz blessed the world’s ears with thirteen solo records\, spanning the acclaimed 2010 Dreamhouse and most recently\, Shine On in 2019. NPR summed it up best\, “Critics and fans alike now regard Poltz as a talented and prolific songwriter.” Evoking themes of “hope\, love\, contemplation\, celebration of Wednesday\, pharmacists\, and the fact that windows are not inanimate objects and they sometimes have conversations with each other\,” Shine On represents Steve at his most inspired and insightful. The opener and title track pairs a delicate vocal with lithely plucked acoustic strings as he urges everyone to\, “Shine on\, shine on.” \nOver the years\, the Nashville-based troubadour has built a fascinating solo catalog\, earmarked by his debut\, One Left Shoe\, Dreamhouse\, Folk Singer\, and 2019’s Shine On. No Depression crowned him\, “A sardonic provocateur with a lighthearted acoustic-driven wit\, suggesting at times a sunnier\, less psychedelic Todd Snider\, or maybe a less wan\, washed Jackson Brown\,” while the Associated Press dubbed him “part busker\, part Iggy Pop and part Robin Williams\, a freewheeling folkie with a quick wit and big heart.” \nAmong other collaborations\, GRAMMY-winning bluegrass phenom Billy Strings tapped him to co-write “Leaders” on 2021’s Renewal and he’s co-written with Molly Tuttle\, Sierra Hull\, Nicki Bluhm\, Oliver Wood and even Mojo Nixon.

SUMMARY:The Steel Wheels
DESCRIPTION:It takes time\nFor the seasons to change\nIt takes time\, sometimes so much time\nTo welcome a reason not to stay the same \n-“Time Is All I Need\,” from Everyone a Song Vol. 2 \n  \nThe Steel Wheels have long been at home in the creative space between tradition and innovation\, informed by the familiar sounds of the Virginia mountains where the band was formed\, but always moving forward with insightful lyrics and an evolving sound. In 2005\, Jay Lapp (vocals\, guitars\, mandolin) and Eric Brubaker (vocals\, fiddle) joined lead singer Trent Wagler (guitar\, banjo) in forming the band as a vehicle for Wagler’s songwriting. They released several albums under Wagler’s moniker\, before officially adopting the The Steel Wheels name with the 2010 release of Red Wing. Quickly staking their claim as independent upstarts in the burgeoning Americana scene\, The Steel Wheels followed up this release with three more self-produced albums in the next five years\, before joining forces with producer Sam Kassirer for Wild As We Came Here (2017) and Over The Trees (2019). Kevin Garcia (drums\, percussion\, keys) joined in 2017\, bringing a new level of sonic depth and polish to the outfit. Having gained the experience of thousands of shows\, festivals and many miles on the road\, the stubbornly independent band has formed deep bonds with each other and the audience that sustains them. \nThe Steel Wheels have responded to this time of isolation and loss by seeking to connect with their audience in new ways. In 2020\, unable to perform their rootsy brand of Americana for crowds in live settings\, the musicians turned their creative powers to crafting songs for individuals. Produced in isolation in the band’s home studios\, the Everyone a Song albums are part of an ongoing project to collect the personal experiences of fans and forge them into that most enduring\, yet ephemeral\, format we call “song.” An accompanying podcast\, We Made You a Song\, explores the stories behind these songs\, and the songwriting process itself. While each song was commissioned to honor a specific relationship or event—a birth\, a wedding\, a memory of home—the emotions evoked are universal. \nNowhere is this shared humanity more evident than at the band’s own Red Wing Roots Music Festival\, a weekend-long celebration of music\, community\, and the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Hosted by The Steel Wheels every summer\, the festival provides a space for the band to shine\, from their high energy Saturday night main stage set to their afternoon showcase with young Red Wing Academy students. At Sunday’s gospel hour you are as likely to hear Steel Wheels originals or Warren Zevon covers as you are traditional gospel fare. The weekend is rounded out by the beloved tribute set in which the band collaborates with a cadre of fellow artists to honor an influential figure in American music\, with past tributes ranging from Dolly Parton to John Prine. \nThe year 2021 closed a chapter for The Steel Wheels\, as founding member and bass player Brian Dickel moved on from touring in order to take over for Jeff Huss as co-owner of Huss and Dalton Guitars. The band is joined by bassist Derek Kratzer\, a longtime friend and musical collaborator\, to continue the mission set out over a decade ago; shaking up traditions to see what sticks\, telling stories\, and joining communities through song. \nmuch more\nhttps://www.thesteelwheels.com \n

SUMMARY:The Kennedys
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome The Kennedys back to Peterborough\, NH. Pete and Maura are one of the most popular duos on the circuit today. Tickets will sell quickly so don’t hesitate. \nThe Kennedys are an American folk-rock band\, consisting of husband and wife Pete and Maura Kennedy. They are recognized for their harmonies and instrumental prowess\, blending elements of country music\, bluegrass\, Western swing and janglepop. \nIn the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic\, and after losing more than 150 concert engagements for the rest of 2020/2021\, The Kennedys started a weekly\, all-request livestreaming show\, beginning on Sunday\, March 15\, 2020 at 2pm EST\, and running every Sunday at the same time. These shows were designed to provide an uplifting hour every week to everyone suffering through the pandemic. After the first several shows\, in which The Kennedys fielded real-time requests through the chat window\, emphasizing their desire to repeat as few songs as possible\, they then started including specialty shows\, paying tribute to some of their favorite musical influences such as Bob Dylan\, Buddy Holly\, The Everly Brothers\, John Lennon\, Nanci Griffith\, Patsy Cline\, The Byrds\, and a four-part Beatles mini-series. In addition\, they have presented hours dedicated to specific genres\, including the Summer of Love\, a Beach Party\, California Country Rock\, British Invasion\, and a Motown special. All of their weekly shows are archived on their YouTube channel’s Weekly Livestream Archive. \nOriginally based in Austin\, Texas\, they spent a few years in the Washington DC area before moving to the East Village in New York City\, where they have been based for most of the last two decades. The Kennedys are known nationwide as the hosts of the late lamented Dharma Café program on Sirius Satellite Radio\, and on Broadway\, they are regular cast members of Theatre Within’s annual tribute to John Lennon — working in that capacity with Patti Smith\, Debbie Harry\, Jackson Browne\, Cyndi Lauper and a host of others. \nLife on the road and time spent in the creative ecosystem of the Village have informed their songwriting over the course of 14 duo albums and half a dozen side projects\, and Safe Until Tomorrow is true to that tradition. What sets the album apart is the inclusion of several anthemic\, rocking songs of social consciousness that convey a strong message best summed up in one of the song titles: “Be Silent No More.” The Kennedys’ music has been described as uplifting\, empowering and encouraging. In these turbulent times\, they rise to the occasion with Safe Until Tomorrow \nMuch more at http://www.kennedysmusic.com

If you have not been notified\, you will be shortly. If you have questions\, reach out to steve@rosegardenfolk.com. We hope we can rebook Annie & Paul for another date\, either this season or next. Sorry for the inconvenience. …Steve \n  \nRishell and Raines\, hailed as one of the world’s best blues duos\, will perform at the Rose Garden Coffeehouse\, 17 West St.\, Mansfield\, at 8 p.m. Saturday\, Sept. 17. Tickets $20 in advance\, $25 at the door. \nFor 29 years Paul Rishell & Annie Raines have been hailed as one of the world’s best blues duos. They have recorded 6 albums together including the W.C. Handy Award-winning Moving to the Country (2000)\, and received numerous award nominations from the Blues Foundation. They have performed and recorded with John Sebastian\, Susan Tedeschi\, Pinetop Perkins and Rory Block. They have opened for Ray Charles\, Dr. John\, and Little Feat\, and performed on international radio and TV shows including Late Night with Conan O’Brien and A Prairie Home Companion. They continue to perform American roots music and their own compositions at festivals\, concert halls\, and clubs all over the world. As a working team\, Paul and Annie have racked up hundreds of thousands of miles on the road in the U.S. and Europe\, collaborated on original songs\, and released the Blues Foundation Award nominated TALKING GUITAR \, I WANT YOU TO KNOW (Tone-Cool/Artemis 1996)\, MOVING TO THE COUNTRY (2000)\, the W.C. Handy Award winner for Acoustic Blues Album of the Year\, and GOIN’ HOME (2004)\, which was nominated for two Handy Awards. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Rishell and Annie Raines’s sixth project together\, TALKING GUITAR was released in 2012 and received 2 Nominations for the Blues Foundation’s Blues Music Awards. It features Paul returning to the bare essence of country blues\, with stunning solo performances of gems by Lead Belly\, Blind Boy Fuller\, Skip James and others\, with Annie joining in on a few tunes. It is stark\, stripped down and intimate. Their previous album\, the live recording “A NIGHT IN WOODSTOCK” was released in 2008 as a CD and in 2009 as a DVD on their own Mojo Rodeo label\, and distributed internationally by Burnside Distribution\, each release earning multiple Blues Music Award nominations. The live concert features special guests John Sebastian\, Bruce Katz\, and Paul and Annie’s own backing band joining the duo for an eclectic\, high-energy set of acoustic and electric originals and classic blues songs. The DVD includes extra features such as artist biographies\, video guitar lessons and audio commentary by Rishell\, Raines and Sebastian. \nPaul and Annie are equally passionate about their craft and devoted to the study and performance of a wide range of blues styles\, from the syncopated acoustic guitar wizardry of Blind Lemon Jefferson and Son House to Chicagoan “Little” Walter Jacob’s swinging amplified harmonica. Paul has reached what Boston Phoenix writer Ted Drozdowski called “a place deep and resonant as Robert Johnson’s crossroads\, where authenticity\, soul\, and a sense of purpose and commitment ring out in every note he sings and plays.” Annie has added vocals\, mandolin\, piano\, and other instruments to her musical arsenal\, while being recognized by top professionals and fans worldwide as the “queen of the blues harmonica.” Says blues legend Pinetop Perkins\, “She plays so good it hurts!” \nTouring internationally at festivals\, clubs\, and concert halls\, and teaching workshops and seminars\, Paul Rishell & Annie Raines have earned loyal fans around the globe. Paul and Annie are featured in the new jug band music documentary\, Chasin’ Gus’ Ghost\, which debuted at the San Francisco Film Festival in August 2007. They have performed on diverse radio and TV shows including A Prairie Home Companion\, Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, and PBS’s Arthur. They have performed and recorded with Susan Tedeschi\, John Sebastian\, Pinetop Perkins\, and Rory Block. Susan Tedeschi recorded an “unplugged” version of Paul’s Blues on a Holiday with Paul and Annie for her 2003 release\, Wait For Me. \nAnnie Raines was born in 1969 in Boston and grew up in the suburb of Newton\, Massachusetts. She picked up the blues harp at 17 and made her stage debut at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge a few months before her high school graduation. Enthralled by the recordings of Muddy Waters\, Little Walter Jacobs\, Big Walter Horton and Sonny Boy Williamson\, she became a fixture at Boston area blues jams. She briefly attended Antioch College and 1988 interned with Washington\, DC homeless rights activist Mitch Snyder\, who persuaded her to drop out of school to pursue her musical career. One of the few female blues harmonica players in the country\, Annie played the New England club circuit with local bands\, and traveled to Chicago where she met and played with many of her musical idols including Pinetop Perkins\, Louis Myers\, and James Cotton. She also enjoyed yearlong stints with the Tarbox Ramblers and the Susan Tedeschi Band\, going on to perform on Susan’s first three albums. She lives in Boston with her number one musical hero\, Paul Rishell. \nPaul Rishell was born in Brooklyn\, New York in 1950\, descended from a long line of Methodist preachers and Norwegian painters. At the age of ten\, he discovered that he could keep time on the drums\, though his feet didn’t reach the pedals. He started a band a few years later\, playing surf music and rock ‘n roll\, until a friend turned him on to the country blues records of Son House\, Robert Johnson\, Charley Patton\, and Blind Lemon Jefferson. He immediately took up the guitar and in the early 70’s Paul moved to Cambridge\, Massachusetts and had the chance to play with many of the first and second generation of blues masters — including Son House\, Johnny Shines\, Sonny Terry\, Brownie McGhee\, and Howlin’ Wolf. Paul Rishell’s debut recording\, BLUES ON A HOLIDAY (Tone-Cool) was released in 1990 to resounding critical acclaim. The album was half acoustic\, half electric\, and established Paul as a masterful\, versatile blues player and as well as a deeply soulful singer and songwriter. He followed that with SWEAR TO TELL THE TRUTH in 1993\, which featured heart-stopping solo performances as well as guest artists Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters and “Little”Annie Raines. Paul’s original music has been used in plays\, films\, and countless television shows including Friends\, Oprah\, and A&E’s Biography. He has built up a stellar reputation over 40 years as a performer\, teacher\, and torchbearer of the country blues tradition. His former students include Susan Tedeschi and Michael Tarbox. Dirt Road Blues\, Paul’s instructional video/CD-Rom for Truefire.com\, was released in 2008 with detailed demonstrations and transcriptions of his original songs and songs by Scrapper Blackwell\, Blind Boy Fuller\, and many others. He is currently serving as a visiting artist at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

SUMMARY:Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents Jonathan Pape and the Wilson Mountain Skyline Ramblers
DESCRIPTION:Friday Coffee House at First Church Dedham \n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA \n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell \nFirst Church Friday Coffee House presents its first concert of the 2022-2023 season featuring singer/songwriter Jonathan Pape and the Wilson Mountain Skyline Ramblers at First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday September 23rd 2022 at 8:00 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase in the dining room. Tickets are $5 available at the door.  Doors open at 7:30 pm. \nJonathan Pape does not consider himself a musical lifer. Nor does he consider himself a hobbyist. He has learned from Neil Young\, REM\, Concrete Blonde and the late Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) to let music be there when he needs it. He has taken his songs out of town and kept them close to home. His Dad once wrote to him that his songs are personal. Very personal. He said they feel like they have a lot to do with the warm\, moist\, under-the-covers moments of true relationships. Old ones. New ones. And the kind you only dream about with someone\, just out of reach. Pape’s last solo record “Every Five Years” can be found on your favorite streaming service and he continues to work on his next one in the moments between being a father and a husband. \nThe Wilson Mountain Skyline Ramblers include Cindy Thames (mandolin)\, Gene Favret (dobro)\, Jed Mehegan (banjo\, guitar)\, Tim Parke (guitar). They are all Boston area Bluegrass lovers who met picking and singing at the monthly Dedham School of Music Bluegrass jams. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalst was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes its choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe and the Concerts at First Church concert series in addition to our Friday Coffee House events.

SUMMARY:Hubby Jenkins at Linden Tree's Season Opener-- Ed Britt Memorial Banjo Bash
DESCRIPTION:LINDEN TREE COFFEEHOUSE.  38TH SEASON OPENER  SEPTEMBER 24\, 2022 \nTHE ED BRITT MEMORIAL BANJO BASH  featuring multi-instrumentalist HUBBY JENKINS \nOn September 24th\, the Linden Tree Coffeehouse  at the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Wakefield will open its 38th season with a very special memorial concert to Ed Britt\, Linden Tree’s founder\, banjo historian\, and long-time Linden Tree sound engineer. The highlight of the evening will be Hubby Jenkins\, a talented multi-instrumentalist formally of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and a member of Rhiannon Giddens Band.  A number of area musicians will also perform in tribute to Britt.  The show will begin at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 7.  Masks are highly recommended for the safety of our performers\, our volunteers\, and our audience. A recording of the event may be available later on\, but not that night so plan to attend in person. \nHubby Jenkins endeavors to share his love and knowledge of old-time American music. Born and raised in Brooklyn he delved into his Southern roots\, following the thread of African American history that wove itself through country blues\, ragtime\, fiddle and banjo\, and traditional jazz. Hubby got his higher musical education started as a busker. He developed his guitar and vocal craft on the sidewalks and subway platforms of New York City\, performing material by those venerable artists whose work he was quickly absorbing. An ambitiously itinerant musician\, he took his show on the road\, playing the streets\, coffee shops\, bars\, and house parties of cities around the U.S. \nAfter years of busking around the country and making a name for himself\, Hubby became acquainted with the Carolina Chocolate Drops. He was an integral part of the Grammy award winning Carolina Chocolate Drops (2010 – 2016)\, as well as a member of Rhiannon Giddens band. Today he spreads his knowledge and love of old-time American music and history through his dynamic solo performances. \nThe Banjo Bash will include some area musicians with words and songs they know Ed always enjoyed. Expected to celebrate are Jim Bradley\, Paul Harty\, and Bill Knott\, who were three-fourths of the Linden Tree house band\, The Blunt Instruments.  Other local folks planning to attend are Ken Perlman\, Gail Finnie\, John Reddick\, Linda Abrams\, Rich Stillman\, and Tim Rowell. Kev G. Moore\, composer of the Linden Tree anthem\, Church with No Steeple\, who dedicated his original song to Ed Britt will also be performing. \nEd Britt died February 18\, 2021 from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease. He was a skilled industrial designer and designed products ranging from consumer goods to medical equipment. He was employed by Digital Equipment Corporation as well as a design consulting firm and eventually opened his own industrial design consulting firm\, Edmund Britt & Co. In addition to his love for his family\, Ed’s passion in life was music. He was a world-renowned banjo historian and collector\, as well as a gifted player of both banjo and guitar. He loved being part of the banjo community\, attending events and sharing his knowledge. He displayed his banjo playing skills at the annual Banjo and Fiddle Contest in Lowell\, MA\, winning multiple times. Ed was heavily involved in the Boston folk music scene. He was one of the founders of the Linden Tree Coffeehouse in Wakefield in 1985 and ran their sound system for decades. He was a member of the Blunt Instruments\, a folk quartet that played at a variety of community events and were regulars at the Linden Tree. Ed combined his professional skills and love for music by designing beautiful instruments for the OME Banjo Company and C. F. Martin & Company. After retiring\, Ed enjoyed spending time with his musician friends\, street performing in Harvard Square and playing at the Wakefield and Melrose farmers markets. \nSeveral years ago\, following a health scare\, Ed shared the following quote with friends\, which summarizes how he lived his life: “I’ve simply tried to go through my life leaving the world a better place than I found it-and hopefully having helped more people than I hurt.” Ed was never shy to show his love to those around him. The best way to honor Ed’s memory is to reach out and tell the people in your life how much they mean to you. Ed’s kindness\, creativity\, interest in others\, and enthusiasm for life touched many people. He will be greatly missed by his wife Lillian\, daughters Rachel and Ali\,  and  many other family and friends \nThe Linden Tree Coffeehouse is located in the social hall of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Wakefield\, at 326 Main St. Wakefield\, MA 01880.  The Linden Tree Coffeehouse operates\, in part\, with thanks to partial support from Wakefield’s Art Council of the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Tickets will be sold at the door $20\, for those under 13 $10. We accept Cash or checks. Other donations may be given through the Linden Tree Coffeehouse  Pay Pal account.   For more information: 781-246-2836\,   www.LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org \n  \n
