SUMMARY:Barnstar
DESCRIPTION:“Barnstar makes Bluegrass for people who hate Bluegrass. This ain’t your daddy’s Bluegrass. Except in the case of Jake Armerding. His dad is in the band.” \nBarnstar! began as the brainchild of Zachariah Hickman (bassist for Josh Ritter\, musical director for Ray Lamontagne) for a local bluegrass supergroup featuring some of Boston’s best musicians and songwriters. Using the familiar tools of the genre—guitar (Mark Erelli)\, fiddle (Jake Armerding)\, mandolin (Taylor Armerding) and banjo (Charlie Rose)—Barnstar! forges its own brand of song- based bluegrass\, gloriously harmonized and raucously played. \nThe band debuted in 2011 with C’mon!\, a mix of distinctive originals and unexpected covers (Neil Young\, Dawes\, The Traveling Wilburys) cut live in the studio. Despite juggling various high-profile sideman gigs behind other artists\, the lads in Barnstar! managed to cause quite a stir with relatively few appearances. Whether playing above 10\,000 feet in the Colorado mountains\, dressing up like pirates on a boat cruising around Boston Harbor\, or starting a small skirmish over the last CD in Shrewsbury\, England – shouts of “C’mon!” followed the band everywhere they went. \nhttp://www.wearebarnstar.com/video

SUMMARY:The Nields
DESCRIPTION:With their unparalleled ability to blend pop craftsmanship\, folk sensibility\, and the influences of ’60s classic rock and ’90s alternative\, The Nields have created a distinctive musical style that defies categorization. Their songs\, imbued with intelligence and occasional humor\, offer poignant observations on life’s unexpected twists and turns. Apple Music describes their sound as “equal parts The Beatles\, the cranberries\, and Joni Mitchell\,” a testament to their unique fusion of melodic sensibilities. \nTickets: https://checkout.tito.io/me-thee-music/the-nields-2024

SUMMARY:A capella quartet Windborne
DESCRIPTION:The New Revival Coffeehouse proudly presents renowned a cappella quartet Windborne on April 27\, 2024. \nAudiences and critics lavish praise upon the singers not only for their technical mastery\, but for the passion\, engagement\, and connection with each other and the audience that imbues each performance with a rare power. \n“The best musical discovery of the year…stunningly powerful. Windborne sets a new bar for harmony singing today!” NPR \n “…subverting expectations and redefining the genre [of vocal music]… just absolutely phenomenal!” BBC Traveling Folk \nBut there’s another\, crucial dimension to Windborne that guides and roots their artistry. They are adherents to folk music’s longtime alliance with social activism\, labor and civil rights\, and other movements that champion the oppressed\, the poor\, and the disenfranchised. Their songs burst with lyrics that\, while penned decades or centuries ago\, still ring true in modern times\, and Windborne’s dynamic harmonies breathe new life into these songs. \nTickets are $20 in advance at Eventbrite\, and $25 on the day of the concert.  Doors open at 7:00 and the concert begins at 7:30.

SUMMARY:Buskin @ Batteau and Friends
DESCRIPTION:2nd Annual Tour of Multiple award-winning singer/songwriters David Buskin\, Christine Lavin\, John Forster\, and Robin Batteau performing funny songs in-the-round for the month of April.\n\nEnjoy all four artists on stage at once\, taking turns accompanying one another on piano\, electric-acoustic violin\, guitars\, harmonies\, and the occasional uncalled-for counterpoints. With songs that have been sung by everyone from Astrud Giberto to Aretha Franklin\, Tom Rush to Tom Paxton\, Andrea Marcovicci to Dr. Ruth Westheimer (really!)\, and Betty Buckley to Gwyneth Paltrow to Paul Newman\, they may be funnier than all of them put together. Award yourself some laughs this April\, you deserve it! \n“Buskin & Batteau whose fun-filled work has contributed to projects winning Emmy\, Grammy\, and Gold Record Awards and an Oscar nod\, singing really funny songs\, and honoring the amazing Cheryl Wheeler and The Lord High Master of the Genre\, Tom Lehrer\, whose songs just went Public Domain\, so we don’t have to pay him!\n\nBuskin & Batteau have been winning hearts and minds with their soulful acoustic balladry and fun-filled performances for more years than they care to remember.\n\n“We’re not from the Cambridge\, came-over-on-the-Mayflower first wave of folkies\, (Joan Baez\, Tom Rush\, Eric Von Schmidt)”; says Buskin\, “but we’d like to think we’ve stolen many of their licks.”\n\nThe Washington Post called their work “an irresistible amalgam of melodic\, sensual pop\, folkie grit and killer wit.”  And while their humor runs the gamut from topical irony (Second Homeless) to terminal silliness (Jews Don’t Camp)\, it’s their unique combination of instrumental virtuosity (piano and violin\, primarily\, though both play other instruments as well)\, soaring vocal harmonies and unparalleled lyric-writing that prompts the standing ovations and rhapsodic reviews: “The most musically sophisticated act in folk;”\n    – The New York Times; “- Acoustic Heaven;” – The Boston Globe.\n\nAnd with the help of uber-percussionist Marshal Rosenberg\, they manage to kick the rhythm pretty hard for a couple of seasoned troubadours.\nhttp://buskinandbatteau.com/\n\n\n“A GARRULOUS COMIC OBSERVER OF CONTEMPORARY MANNERS!!!”\n-New York Times \nActor/singer/songwriter Jeff Daniels wrote the foreword to Christine Lavin’s ASCAP Book Award-winning ‘COLD PIZZA FOR BREAKFAST– A MEM-WHA?\,’ when she also won her 5th ASCAP Composer Award. A frequent guest columnist for the Washington Post and the Huffington Post\, Christine’s colorful collaborations with Betsy Franco (‘AMOEBA HOP\,’ Best Book Award\, the American Academy for the Advancement of Science) and Neil deGrasse Tyson (‘THE PLUTO FILES\,’ featuring Christine’s ode to Pluto\, ‘PLANET X’)\, and Chris’s 23rd album ‘SPAGHETTIFICATION\,’ featuring the dulcet tones of\, yes\, Neil deGrasse Tyson. Her songs have been lighting up the cabarets of Broadway and Off Broadway via such magical voices as Betty Buckley\, Sutton Foster\, and Andrea Marcovicci; she’s been creating videos for the likes of Judy Collins and Michael Feinstein; she’s the creator of the ongoing national tours ‘ON A WINTER’S NIGHT’ and ‘FOUR BITCHIN’ BABES!’ Christine Lavin is a busy girl. \n“A fearless folkZinger!” – Orlando Sentinel “Wildly entertaining!”\n– New Yorker \n“A swift kick in the pants!”\n– Paul Newman\nhttps://christinelavin.com/ \nTom Lehrer: “You don’t need me to kick around anymore\, now you have John Forster!” \nA favorite of ‘NPR’s Morning Edition\,’ John’s smart and funny songs have sparked Broadway and Off Broadway musicals (‘Eleanor— An American Love Story\,’ ‘Into the Light\,’ ‘Pretzels\,’ ‘A Good Swift Kick\,’ ‘Mariel\,’ ‘How to Eat Like a Child\,’ ‘Freaky Friday’)\, children’s records with Tom Chapin (4 Grammy nods)\, children’s books (‘This Pretty Planet\,’ ‘The Backwards Birthday Party\,’ ‘The BSAT Official Study Guide’)\, and wonderful performances by the likes of Judy Collins\, Rosanne Cash\, Dave van Ronk\, Christine Lavin\, and Faith Hill. \nhttps://johnforster.com/ \n“An irresistible amalgam of melodic\, sensual pop\, folkie grit\, and killer wit.”\n– Washington Post \n“Acoustic Heaven!”\n– Boston Globe \n“We’re not from the Cambridge\, came-over-on-the-Mayflower first wave of folkies (Joan Baez\, Tom Rush\, Eric vonSchmidt)\,” says David Buskin of Buskin & Batteau\, “but we’d like to think we’ve stolen many of their licks.” They love covers (Judy Collins (what\, again?!)\, Astrud Gilberto\, Bette Midler\, Johnny Mathis\, Peter Paul & Mary\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo\, etc.)\, and jingles (Aretha\, Whitney\, James Brown\, Mel Torme\, Richie Havens\, etc.)\,but best is getting together with great friends and a great audience to play piano\, strum guitars\, hook up the violin\, and make a joyful noise! \n“The most sophisticated act in folk.”\n– New York Times\nhttp://www.buskinandbatteau.com/

SUMMARY:Vance Gilbert at Harmony on the Green April 27th
DESCRIPTION:Can something be wry\, aching\, hysterical\, evocative\, provocative\, fun\, beautifully sung\, and consummately played all at once? That would be Vance Gilbert. \nAn integral part of the national folk scene\, Gilbert’s approach to the acoustic singer-songwriter idiom is significant. Gilbert’s compositions\, while frequently employing sophisticated melodies and harmonies that attest to his jazz roots\, remain sublime attestations to the storyteller’s craft. Many know Vance’s signature song\, “Unfamiliar Moon\,” which landed him in the second round of auditions of TV’s America’s Got Talent. Like all great artists\, Vance truly happens live. In fact he developed his reputation with his jaw-dropping\, diverse\, funny\, devastating\, and gorgeous live performances. \nVance exploded onto the scene in the early ’90s\, with buzz spreading quickly. Who was this multicultural arts teacher knocking them dead at open mics? After opening Shawn Colvin’s 1992 Fat City tour\, he took much of America by storm. “The voice of an angel\, the wit of a devil\, and the guitar playing of a god\,” wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. \nVance has released 16 albums\, including Somerville (Live)\, and Side of the Road with Ellis Paul. His latest album\, The Mother of Trouble\, was released in May. \n(Please note\, our ticketing system only allows us to sell tickets one show at a time. Tickets for our Vance Gilbert show will go on sale after our March show! Visit our website at http://www.hancockchurch.org/coffeehouse)

SUMMARY:The Honey Dewdrops — Erin Ash Sullivan opens
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for those age 18 and under. Visit oldslooppresents.org\, John Tarr Store in Rockport\, or The Bookstore of Gloucester. The suggested contribution at the door is $25 for adults\, $5 for those age 18 and under\, and $50 for families. \nTickets and more information\nLaura Wortman and Kagey Parrish of The Honey Dewdrops began touring in 2009 and have called the city of Baltimore home since 2014. With several albums and fourteen years of playing shows on the road\, they continue to expand their experimental folk sound of electric and acoustic guitars\, mandolin and clawhammer banjo with tight vocal harmonies\, while maintaining a commitment to deepening their understanding of the world through the lens of songwriting and music. No Depression says of the new album\, Light Behind Light\, “The Honey Dewdrops have a way of filling their songs with humanity\, using their beautiful playing and harmonies to emphasize what connects us all.” \nMassachusetts-based singer-songwriter Erin Ash Sullivan’s initial foray into music was as one-half of the folk duo Edith O. with Amy Speace. After a hiatus to focus on her family and career as an educator\, she returned to writing and performing. In May 2021\, she released her debut solo album\, We Can Hear Each Other\, which reached #10 on the FAI DJ Chart; her single\, “Fireflies\,” reached #8. In 2022\, she was selected as one of the “Most Wanted” performers from Grassy Hill Emerging Artist Showcase at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and was John Platt’s selection for the Folk DJ Showcase at NERFA. She won the 2023 Rose Garden Performing Songwriter Competition\, received the Mark Erelli Judge’s Choice Award in the New England Songwriting Competition\, and was a finalist in the Great American Song Contest and the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. WFUV’s John Platt describes Erin as having “a special talent that reminds me of early Dar Williams\,” and Victor Infante of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette describes her music as “delicate and evocative” with songs full of “nuance and emotional resonance.”

SUMMARY:First Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse Presents the Doppelgängers and Friends on 4/19!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell \n  \nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its seventh concert of the 2023-2024 season featuring the Doppelgängers and Friends at First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, April 19\, 2024 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $15 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \n  \nThe Doppelgängers \, Kenny Raskin and RF Berks\, make their 3rd triumphant return to the Church\, having played the Friday Folk Coffeehouse concerts in 2022 and 2023. This time they are bringing a few other players along. Both RF and Kenny have had their own musical careers as singer/songwriters\, but revel in the camaraderie of playing together. Their style is Americana\, with a touch of swing as well. While their careers have been different\, their love of acoustic music and singing harmony has brought them together and found them playing everywhere from living rooms to music festivals. \nThe two men met in 2015 at the Maine Fiddle Camp\, where they soon found out that many people at the camp thought they were brothers. The deal was sealed when RF’s daughter mistook Kenny for her father. Thus\, the Doppelgängers were born. \nKenny was 8 years old when his father’s friend Harry gave him a ukulele. He played that ukulele until he was 11 years old. Then he discovered girls\, and promptly bought a guitar. That ukulele\, however\, was the gateway into a fifty-year plus love affair with playing music on multiple instruments\, including banjo\, mandolin and bass.  In 2018\, Kenny released his debut CD\, MY GREATEST HITS!\, and in 2022 followed it with his second CD\, Peace of Mind. He is also known internationally as an accomplished actor and theatre clown\, having appeared on Broadway and with Cirque du Soleil\, as well as on television and variety stages in the US\, France\, England\, Chile\, Germany and China. \nRF Berks found a Sears guitar in the attic when he was 15 and began carrying it everywhere he went. Whenever he met a kid that could play a song or guitar lick he would make them show him how it worked until eventually he learned enough to form a band. He learned most of what he knows about music long before he studied and obtained a degree in the subject. He has been writing songs – over one hundred – for twenty plus years\, and in 2019 he released an album entitled TREAT ME WELL\, which can be found on the usual streaming platforms. It was an eclectic mix of musical styles with contributing musicians from around the world. Francis is also an accomplished poet. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services and the Parish Players theater troupe\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events. \n

SUMMARY:Putnam Murdock Coffeehouse - Karen Woodhall and David Jackson Open and Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:Feature – Putnam Murdock \nSteeped in old-time folk\, country and blues\, Putnam Murdock’s songwriting presents an honest voice of Americana music.  As a one-man band or a full ensemble\, the intimacy remains obvious in either his contemporary sonic collages or his classic ballads. His fourth studio release\, Long Time to Make Old Friends showcases songs penned with his co-songwriting partner and mentor\, Reed Foehl.\nAfter graduating with a songwriting degree from Berklee School in Music in 2002\, Murdock launched a solo career\, traveling the country.  As a songwriter he earned an honorable mention from the International Songwriting Competition for ‘Jersey Whiskey’ as well as having his debut record Fiction on the official ballot for the Grammys in five categories.\nPutnam has co-written songs that have appeared in the television shows Joan of Arcadia\, Dawsons Creek\, MTV’s Made\, and The Biggest Loser. The song ‘When it Comes Around’ was part of the movie sound track for Just Friends. He’s performed as a session musician on several Ken Burns documentaries including The Mayo Clinic with Bill Frisell and The Roosevelts:  An Intimate History.  Recently\, Murdock worked with the Ewers Brothers Film team to create music for the Mental Health Series which debuted on PBS in 2022.\nOpener – Karen Woodhall and David Jackson \n         Karen Woodhall does it all – contemporary folk\, with blues\, country and pop standards mixed in. Sometimes described vocally as “little-mama blues with a light brass to her sass\,” Karen brings a refreshing and joyful approach to her music\, with a natural and unassuming style that’s easy and accessible.  Karen is ably accompanied by David Jackson\, on guitar.\n         David Jackson plays in an energetic\, percussive style\, especially on his originals.  He collaborates with others or borrows from the great American songbook\, traditional\, old-time country\, folk\, swing\, fiddle tunes and blues.  David plays from all these influences\, ever cognizant of and grateful to carry the songs on as they`ve been passed on to him.  Together Karen Woodhall and David Jackson will open evening with their down-home style and musings.\n\nWe end the evening with a mini open mic – 8 slots. SUMMARY:Rupert Wates
DESCRIPTION:Minimum donation directly to artist $25 \nCome join us for a fun house concert at our private home in Newton! To make a reservation\, email us at susan.hurwit@gmail.com. and we will confirm and provide directions. You must have a reservation beforehand. Snacks and drinks provided. Capacity limited to 35. When you get here you can pay in cash or Venmo. If you’re not feeling well\, please refrain from attending. \nRupert Wates was born in London and studied at Oxford University. In the late 1990’s\, he signed a publishing deal with Eaton Music and worked for several years as their house songwriter. He moved to Paris in 2001\, formed his own quartet and performed regularly in the city’s clubs. He came to the US in fall 2006. Since then he has received more than fifty songwriting and performing awards. He has been a Finalist in the Kerrville New Folk Song Contest\, and an Emerging Artist at Falconridge Folk Festival (full list of awards at www.rupertwatesmusic.com/awards). He has recorded and released 9 CDs (available at www.rupertwatesmusic.com/buy-music). All have received outstanding reviews in the online press and have been played on radio stations in America\, Canada\, The Netherlands\, Germany\, Greece\, Israel and Australia. Rupert’s songs have been covered plentifully by other performers in the UK\, Canada\, and the USA (see www.rupertwatesmusic.com/covers). In 2015-17 alone\, 25 of his songs were recorded by other artists\, including two full length CDs: ‘Crazy Puzzle’ (August 2015) by Nashville-based performer Roxie Rogers\, and ‘Wide Open Heart’ (July 2017) by Los Angeles vocalist Susan Kohler. These two CDs comprise exclusively songs chosen from Rupert Wates’ catalog. They were initiated and funded entirely by the artists themselves\, and may fairly be described as tribute albums to his songwriting. \nIn addition to writing and recording\, Wates plays over 120 live shows a year in venues all over America\, in Canada and in Europe\, and has appeared regularly on radio and TV. He prefers smaller\, more intimate spaces\, where the audience is up close\, where true musicianship counts\, and where real emotion can’t be faked. The house concert environment suits him best of all. Between 2012 and 2016\, Rupert has booked over 150 shows through the LR network\, making him by far the most booked performer on the LRN database. In recognition of this\, LRN hosts voted him one of 3 ‘Artists Of The Year’ in both 2013 and 2016. Well over 120 host recommendations on his profile page give some reasons why. \n \n

SUMMARY:Stone Soup Coffeehouse Presents Grace Morrison\, Molly O'Leary Opens
DESCRIPTION:Laura Daly of the Boston Globe had this to say about Grace Morrison: Her voice smacks of Jewel\, and her style\, cadence and song structure is every inch from the school of Joan Osborne\, Lisa Loeb\, Natalie Merchant. It’s uncanny.” However\, we like to think Grace Morrison is all Grace\, and we cannot wait to welcome her back to the Stone Soup stage on April 13\, 2024 at The Music Mansion\, 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906. The show begins at 7 pm. Opening for Grace will be Molly O’Leary.\n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS\n\nGrace Morrison has never allowed others to define her. Over the course of her prolific career\, she’s released three exceedingly well received albums — I’m the Apple (2017)\, Reasons (2019) and Daughter (2021)\, each of which testify to her artistry and her acumen. She’s many things — a singer\, songwriter\, a mom\, Renaissance Faire performer\, and yes\, even a cranberry grower. Yet she pursues each activity with an uplifting attitude and authentic enthusiasm. It leaves an impact on her audiences\, creating an emotional bond that’s both enduring and engaging.\nIn that regard\, Grace has patented a sound she calls “Saltwater Country.” She describes it as the idea that we need the ocean — and all sources of water for that matter — to provide a place that offers cleansing — not only physically\, but spiritually as well. She expresses those sentiments in her songs and in her live performances\, through the spoken interludes she shares between songs. So too\, her themes incorporate a variety of subjects all shared from a personal perspective — be it life as a new mom\, accepting one’s body image\, dealing with alcoholism\, substance abuse and eating disorders\, life in a small town and even by referencing historical scenarios as well.\nNow\, with her new effort\, Maybe Modern\, Grace offers yet another outstanding example of those unique abilities. It maintains the momentum established by Daughter\, an album that garnered a host of superlative reviews. So too\, Maybe Modern underscores the accomplishments that have marked the trajectory Grace has maintained since so early on. They include her Grand Prize wins at the New England Songwriting Competition and the WPRI Rhode Show Big Break contest — both of which led to her music video being played on the season finale of “American Idol” — her recognition as an Official Showcase performer at both the Southeast Regional Folk Alliance and the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance in 2019\, her finalist standing in the Wildflower (TX) Festival performing singer-songwriter contest\, and her selection to perform as part of the Emerging Artist Showcase at the famed Falcon Ridge Folk Festival.\n\nMolly O’Leary (they/them) is an indie folk/rock singer-songwriter from New Bedford\, Massachusetts. Molly hits the heart strings of audiences with their use of songwriting as a form of activism to raise awareness about mental health and social justice. Molly has received the following awards/nominations: 2021 International Songwriting Competition Semi-Finalist\, 2022 Last Band Standing Finalist\, 2022 New England Music Awards Nominee for New Act\, 2023 Motif Music Awards Nominee for Favorite Singer-Songwriter\, and 2023 New England Music Awards Nominee for Songwriter of the Year.

While skillfully accompanying herself on acoustic guitar\, it is her artistry as a songwriter that can silence a room\, uniting her lyrical prowess with breathtaking melodies that linger long after they are sung. Her critically-acclaimed debut album Cottonwood is a collection of songs that reflect on femininity and equality\, the majesty of the wilderness\, and the beautiful awkwardness of trying to love another person.
