SUMMARY:Dave Gunnings
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to bring Dave Gunning back to the Monadnock Region. He last played at Deb’s House Concerts. His Bass Hall\, 2020 concert was cancelled due to the pandemic. \nDave Gunning is best defined as a master craftsman. Over the course of 25 years and 11 earlier albums\, the Nova Scotian folk singer/songwriter has diligently sharpened his skills\, developing into a poetic storyteller and emotionally convincing singer with few equals.\n\nWith a career spanning over two decades\, Dave Gunning is one of Canada’s folk music treasures – a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter who has earned multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards\, a Juno nomination and nine East Coast Music Awards for his well-crafted work. Dave has gained a reputation for being a great storyteller and engaging performer who has the profound ability to take listeners on a musical journey through his songs. Much of his material is about the underdogs\, heroes\, family\, the heart and reflects the messaging of social justice and carrying about the world around us. The fruits of those labours are now vividly on display on his latest collection of songs\, “Up Against The Sky”. \nAlong with richly-deserved peer respect\, Dave Gunning has earned a shelf full of music industry honours. That tally currently stands at eight East Coast Music Awards and two Canadian Folk Music Awards\, plus a 2012 Juno Award nomination in the Roots & Traditional Solo Album of the Year category for his album … a tribute to John Allan Cameron\, a compelling homage to another of Dave’s Maritime musical heroes. Dave’s 2019 release\, “Up Against The Sky” was recognized with four 2020 Canadian Folk Music Award nominations; two East Coast Music Awards\, a Canadian Independent Music Video Award; and an International Folk Music Award nomination. His efforts have attracted strong media and radio airplay support\, charting as the #1 most played Canadian and International ‘Artist’ & the #2 ‘Album’ on the US folk DJ Charts (October 2019). Dave has toured extensively across Canada\, the USA\, the UK\, Ireland and Australia delighting audiences wherever he performs. \nDave’s 12th studio album\, The Same Storm was released Oct 28\, 2022.   \nmuch more at:  https://davegunning.com/\, https://www.facebook.com/davegunning/ \nHis well-crafted material is simultaneously poetic and rooted in reality\, and is delivered via emotion.

SUMMARY:Steel Wheels
DESCRIPTION:“The Steel Wheels are certainly not the first band to use bluegrass music as a springboard to dive into a rainbow of possibilities\, but they are certainly among the best that do.”   — TOM CLARKE: Tahoe Onstage \nThe Steel Wheels have long been at home in the creative space between tradition and innovation\, informed by the familiar sounds of the Virginia mountains where the band was formed\, but always moving forward with insightful lyrics and an evolving sound. In 2005\, Jay Lapp (vocals\, guitars\, mandolin) and Eric Brubaker (vocals\, fiddle) joined lead singer Trent Wagler (guitar\, banjo) in forming the band as a vehicle for Wagler’s songwriting. They released several albums under Wagler’s moniker\, before officially adopting the The Steel Wheels name with the 2010 release of Red Wing. Quickly staking their claim as independent upstarts in the burgeoning Americana scene\, The Steel Wheels followed up this release with three more self-produced albums in the next five years\, before joining forces with producer Sam Kassirer for Wild As We Came Here (2017) and Over The Trees (2019). Kevin Garcia (drums\, percussion\, keys) joined in 2017\, bringing a new level of sonic depth and polish to the outfit. Newest member Jeremy Darrow rounds out the rhythm section and grounds the band as they continue to explore deeply rooted yet fresh folk rock sounds. Having gained the experience of thousands of shows\, festivals and many miles on the road\, the stubbornly independent band has formed deep bonds with each other and the audience that sustains them. \nThe Steel Wheels have responded to this time of isolation and loss by seeking to connect with their audience in new ways. In 2020\, unable to perform their rootsy brand of Americana for crowds in live settings\, the musicians turned their creative powers to crafting songs for individuals. Produced in isolation in the band’s home studios\, the Everyone a Song albums are part of an ongoing project to collect the personal experiences of fans and forge them into that most enduring\, yet ephemeral\, format we call “song.” An accompanying podcast\, We Made You a Song\, explores the stories behind these songs\, and the songwriting process itself. While each song was commissioned to honor a specific relationship or event—a birth\, a wedding\, a memory of home—the emotions evoked are universal. \nNowhere is this shared humanity more evident than at the band’s own Red Wing Roots Music Festival\, a weekend-long celebration of music\, community\, and the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Hosted by The Steel Wheels every summer\, the festival provides a space for the band to shine\, from their high energy Saturday night main stage set to their afternoon showcase with young Red Wing Academy students. At Sunday’s gospel hour you are as likely to hear Steel Wheels originals or Warren Zevon covers as you are traditional gospel fare. The weekend is rounded out by the beloved tribute set in which the band collaborates with a cadre of fellow artists to honor an influential figure in American music\, with past tributes ranging from Dolly Parton to John Prine. \nWhether at a joyous summer festival\, in their many shows across the country and beyond\, or in the studio\, The Steel Wheels continue their mission set out over a decade ago; shaking up traditions to see what sticks\, telling stories\, and joining communities through song. https://www.thesteelwheels.com/bio

SUMMARY:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham Presents Lorraine and Bennett Hammond!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell \nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its sixth concert of the 2022-2023 season featuring the Lorraine and Bennet Hammond att First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, March 17\, 2023 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $10 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nLorraine Lee Hammond grew up in rural New England when ballads and barn dances were part of community life.  Her many credits as a traditional singer\, songwriter\, teacher\, and multi-instrumentalist include two Appalachian dulcimer books with Yellow Moon Press\, and numerous recordings. A former lecturer in American Folk Music and World Music at Lasell University in Newton\, MA\, she helped to launch the first UMass Boston\, WUMB radio Summer Acoustic Music Week in 1996\, and retired as music director at the close of 2022.  She and Bennett continue to teach in the program as they have done from its inception. Bennett Hammond is a superb finger-style guitarist and recent convert to the five-string banjo. He names “the three Bs\,” Bach\, the blues and Buddy Holly\, as major influences.  Bennett’s songwriting gained traction during the pandemic with his “Mean ol’ Quarantine” blues. \nTogether\, The Hammonds are versatile musicians\, engaging entertainers\, and fun teachers. Their warm stage presence is punctuated with wry humor\, and their command of their instruments and musical genres is without flaw. The Boston Globe calls them “a dazzling\, witty\, eclectic\, delightful duo.” The Hammond’s repertoire ranges in style from traditional Celtic and American songs and ballads through blues and contemporary music. They sing both traditional and original songs and can be heard on over thirty recordings as featured artists or enhancing the work of other performers. They make their home in Brookline\, Massachusetts. \n“The Hammonds are folk missionaries of the first order\, devoted cultural activists\, teachers\, event organizers\, and performers who love to introduce people to the joys of traditional music.” – Boston Globe \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and the Concerts at First Church Saturday classical concert series\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events.

SUMMARY:Heather Maloney in Concert
DESCRIPTION:The New Revival Coffeehouse will present renowned vocalist Heather Maloney at a live concert on Saturday\, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. \nThe Massachusetts-based “writer song-singer” found music in the midst of three years at a meditation center\, honing a sound moored in days of silent reflection and reverence for storytellers like Joni\, Rilke\, Ken Burns\, and the anonymous authors of Zen parables.  \nAnd while she eventually traded the quiet\, structured life as a yogi for the kinetic life a touring musician\, the core of her songwriting remains centered around the same curiosity about our inner world and the desire to articulate it through storytelling. \nHeather has toured nationally as a headliner as well as in support of acts like Lake Street Dive\, Shakey Graves\, Gary Clark Jr.\, Colin Hay\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, and many more. The New York Times called her music “utterly gorgeous\, visceral” and SPIN Magazine described her as “stunning\, breathy\, and starkly memorable.” \nAfter over 1\,000 live shows and more than a decade of touring\, Heather Maloney released her first live album\, “No Shortcuts-Live at the Academy” in June. Recorded with a soaring string quartet\, No Shortcuts is a recording of the interaction\, presence and joy that only unfolds in real time\, when real live music and real live people share a real live space together. \nAs well as a songwriter and performer\, Heather is an illustrator and linocut artist who carves and prints visual representations of her songs on a variety of mediums. She considers the integration of music and art to be an inspiring new chapter as a creative person. \nThe New Revival Coffeehouse is at First Parish Church of Stow and Acton\, 353 Great Road in Stow MA 01775.  Tickets are $17 in advance at eventbrite.com and $20 the day of the concert. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:30.  Masks are optional. \nFor more information\, see heathermaloney.com \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Unless the weather is unusually warm for early March (not impossible this winter) this concert will be indoors in the hosts’ living room with capacity limited to 30. The suggested contribution is $20\, payable by cash\, check\, or Venmo at the door. Send an email to whalecoveproductions@gmail.com for information about how to attend. \nClaudia Nygaard is a mesmerizing storyteller and a cinematic lyricist who writes songs that are heartfelt\, humorous\, scrappy\, and sensual\, And she does so with a daredevil’s vulnerability and a complete lack of self-censorship. Nygaard\, with her powerful\, resonant\, and deeply emotive amber honey voice\, is a master at putting a tear in your eye with a song that breaks your heart\, and then with a quick wit and an outlandish sense of humor\, she’ll replace it with tears of laughter. \nBuilding on the craft she learned while a staff songwriter on Nashville’s Music Row\, she has won numerous awards including the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival Songwriting Competition\, and with the title cut of her latest album “Lucky Girl”\, the Tumbleweed Music Festival Songwriting Competition. “Lucky Girl” charted at #3 on the Folk Alliance Radio song chart and #5 on the album chart\, and gave her a significant debut on the Americana chart. It also received impressive reviews from the press. Legendary folk music magazine “Sing Out” claimed the songs “rival the likes of Guy Clark or Ian Tyson”.

In the social hall of the Unitarian-Universalist Church\, 326 Main St. Wakefield\, MA. \nJoyce Andersen and Harvey Reid have combined their talents to create one of the most potent duo teams in acoustic music. They are both gifted instrumentalists\, strong and versatile singers\, and prolific songwriters\, and are comfortable in a dizzying array of styles of roots and Americana music. They jump from showstopping Celtic jigs and old-time fiddle tunes to house-shaking blues rockers\, soaring gospel duets\, and achingly beautiful ballads. Reid’s legendary acoustic and slide guitar work make a perfect backdrop for Andersen’s powerful fiddling\, and they take turns on lead and harmony vocals to showcase a large and interesting repertoire of original\, traditional and contemporary music. They have brought audiences to their feet at folk & bluegrass festivals\, clubs\, coffeehouses and concert halls across the US and in Europe\, and have released 32 highly-acclaimed albums of music between them. \nAfter 35 years as a full-time performer\, Harvey Reid is a familiar name to acoustic music fans every- where\, for his peerless stringed instrument work\, pro- found composing and songwriting\, lively stage shows\, and his in-depth knowledge of traditional music. Raised in the music-rich DC area\, in the 1970’s he played street fiddle\, as well as guitar\, mandolin and dobro in a number of blue- grass and old-time bands before moving to New England and embarking on a solo career in 1979. Reid won the Beanblossom flatpicking contest in 1976\, the National Fingerpicking award in 1981 and the International autoharp contest in 1982\, and has shared the stage with most of the great pickers of today. His “Solo Guitar Sketchbook” was included in Guitar Player Magazine’s Top 20 acoustic guitar CD’s\, and “Steel Drivin’ Man” was the only recording of the last 25 years chosen by Acoustic Guitar Magazine in  its Top 10 Folk CD’s Of All Time list. He also has released the only recording ever devoted entirely to the 6-string banjo\, and may be the best autoharp player performing today. Reid has released 17 solo albums to great critical acclaim\, exploring traditional as well as his own brand of modern roots music. \nJoyce Andersen is a greatly talented and versatile fiddler\, songwriter and singer from New Hampshire who has recently stepped out as a solo artist. She spent over 10 years in New England\, New York and Nashville\, playing in numerous bluegrass\, swing\, Celtic and country bands\, taking her from the club and festival circuit all the way to Carnegie Hall and The Conan O’Brien Show (with Marshall Crenshaw) In Sept 2003 she released her 2nd solo CD\, “Right Where I Should Be” which garnered a great deal of national attention. The Boston Globe called her “…an exciting young fiddler-singer with precocious traditional savvy and street-smart contemporary sensibility” and she has received significant national radio airplay as an emerging artist. She can trade licks with the hottest bluegrass or jazz pickers\, tear the house down with a blood-curdling Appalachian-voodoo fiddle & vocal duet\, melt you with a Billie Holiday torch song\, dash off a flawless set of Swedish fiddle tunes\, or hypnotize you with one of her haunting guitar songs. \nHarvey Reid & Joyce Andersen form a rare and versatile musical partnership\, combining the best of American virtuoso instrumental work with razor-sharp harmony singing and a captivating stage presence. They take to the stage with a rich and varied songbag\, an arsenal of stringed instruments\, and a deeply-satisfying emotional purity\, with a fresh northern New England sensibility\, free from showbiz and pretense. \nTickets for those attending are $20\,  cash or check at the door.  Please reserve your seats by calling 781-246-2836. Mask wearing is optional to protect the band\, volunteers & audience members. \nThe Linden Tree Coffeehouse operates\, in part\, with thanks to partial support from Wakefield’s Arts Council of the Massachusetts Cultural Council. SUMMARY:Atwater-Donnelly Band - January 21\, 8 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:“To those who…deny the human spirit\, I give you these chroniclers of its joys and sorrows\, light and dark\, hope and despair and say that they have but liberated what is in us all. Their dancing notes say\, ‘Here it is! Humanity’s real self. Look! Isn’t it wondrous?”— From a poem written about Aubrey and Elwood\, “The Folk Singers” by Philip R. Pearson\, Jr. in his book Poetry is to be Consumed\, Vantage Press\, New York \n“I almost fainted when you sang and danced and played the banjo at the same time! My mouth was droped (sic) open the entire time.”— 4th graders\, Chaplin Elementary School\, Chaplin\, CT \nThe Atwater-Donnelly Band performs a unique and thrilling blend of traditional American and Celtic folk music and percussive dance. Elwood Donnelly\, Aubrey Atwater\, Cathy Clasper-Torch\, and Erin Lobb Mason blend beautiful vocals and play guitar\, mountain dulcimer\, banjo\, fiddle\, cello\, bass\, whistle\, harmonica\, limberjacks\, and other surprises including freestyle Appalachian clogging and French Canadian footwork. \nThe performance is appealing to all ages and with a relaxed stage presence\, Aubrey\, Elwood\, Cathy\, and Erin explain song\, instrument\, and dance origins to give more relevance to the material. Separately and together\, these performers have received numerous accolades and have produced many recordings and books which will be available at the performance.
