SUMMARY:Antje Duvekot returns to Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Antje returns to the Harmony on the Green stage after accompanying Catie Curtis at her show here back in May. The audience was delighted by her beautiful harmonies on Catie’s songs\, as well as her sharing a few of her own songs with us. We are thrilled to welcome her back! \nAntje has won some of the top songwriting awards including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and in one of the nation’s top music markets\, she won the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. Two of her albums found her working with Richard Shindell as producer\, as well as other “folk royalty” such as John Gorka\, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli. \nAntje has extensive touring experience\, criss-crossing the US and Europe many times. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined festivals in Scotland and Denmark. \nThe Bank of America featured Antje’s song “Merry Go Round” in a national TV advertising campaign\, including a Super Bowl audience. Neil Dorfsman\, producer for Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen and Sting says\, “When I first heard Antje I knew I was witnessing something very special. She creates an entire\, detailed world in verse\, and takes you there with beautiful and understated melody. Her songs are stunning paintings of color and shade and always generate the heat and light that real art should. In an unpoetic and ‘in your face’ world\, she is lyrical and subtle” \nAntje has played the TEDMED conference in San Diego. CNN said of the experience\, “Then\, this morning\, the tone of the conference turned from intellectual to deeply emotional when Antje Duvekot played her guitar and sang about her grandmother’s descent into Alzheimer’s disease. Duvekot’s song was all too relatable for those of us who have watched loved ones slip away. ‘And Anna tries to form a thought / But at the end she’s forgotten where she started from / There’s something she would like to say / But the words in her head seem to have got away’ she sang.” \nAntje’s most recent album\, New Wild West was released in September\, 2023. \nOpening for Antje will be Eva Gertz. Eva is an eclectic artist of many mediums\, born and raised in Melrose\, MA where she started piano lessons at a young age. After attending Berklee College of Music (class of 2015)\, she spent six years developing her multi-faceted music career in NYC. This led her to arrange for Broadway and assist top-rank composers\, perform as a dueling pianist on cruise ships\, and self produce her original singer-songwriter releases along with ultra-creative music videos which share an uplifting message of self-love. \nShe currently lives in Somerville and teaches arranging at Berklee among many other musical jobs and projects. Her appreciation for the local arts community that has supported her from the beginning continues to grow immensely. You can learn more about her at her website https://www.evagertz.com/\nTickets available at https://hancockchurch.breezechms.com/form/17550915758430471852 \nHarmony on the Green at Hancock United Church of Christ\, is an accessible venue with parking along Mass. Avenue\, as well as in our back parking lot. \nFrom our front entrance\, there is an elevator to bring you to Clark Hall. Our back parking lot has accessible parking and a chair lift up to Clark Hall. We have single occupancy wheelchair accessible bathrooms.\nat Harmony on the Green March 2\, 202

SUMMARY:Beppe Gambetta
DESCRIPTION:“Get him on a stage and his fingers speak a language all their own. After all\, he’s not known as the ‘Italian King of the flatpick guitar’ for nothing.”\n(Steve Wildsmith\, The Daily Times) \n “A Spanish odyssey\, a mazurka learned from a 78rpm record\, slips into this repertoire\, just as tunes like these have been slipping into American culture since.”\n(Rob Adams\, The Herald) \n“His incredible versatility combined with his charm and engaging stage presence make Beppe’s concerts evenings of high quality music and relaxed entertainment. Over-riding all else\, however\, is the brilliance of his talent…”\n(Cornish Guardian) \n  \nBeppe Gambetta is a guitarist\, vocalist\, researcher and composer born in Genova\, Italy in 1955 who developed a style of concert presentation that brings American and European Roots to speak together with one voice. In his unique approach\, Gambetta blends energetic grooves with passionate melodies\, giving new life to sources from different times\, periods and places. In addition\, the original music he composes gives contemporary influences to traditional roots music. \nHe first came to the United States in 1985 and then returned in 1988 to travel through the US with the first available Sony digital DAT machine. He managed to meet and record a collection of duets with 12 of the most admired guitarists in the American bluegrass/folk genre including Norman Blake\, Mike Marshall\, Charles Sawtelle\, John Jorgenson and David Grier. \nIn 1989 Beppe Gambetta crossed the “Iron curtain” to perform at the Porta Festival in Czeckoslovakia and sensed the revolutionary wave that in those days expressed itself also thorugh the music. In that occasion he started an important collaboration with American banjo master Tony Trischka. \nIn the 1990s Gambetta started to tour on a regular basis with American guitar legend Dan Crary (in Europe and then in the US and Australia). Dan Crary was able to introduce him to the organizers of the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield\, KS\, a major guitar event and home to important guitar contests. Gambetta’s performances at Winfield opened the door to him becoming a regular part of the American Festival scene. \nIn 1993 he met and collaborated with Gene Parsons\, a former member of the legendary folk-rock band\, The Byrds. Parsons performed on Gambetta’s first solo American CD “Good News From Home” (1995) on the then preeminent folk and Celtic label “Green Linnet”. In this album\, Gambetta started to blend his love for American Roots with elements of European tradition moving away from being known strictly as a hot bluegrass picker to create his own multi-national style. \nIn the late 1990s he launched a project to research the forgotten music of the Italian String Virtuosi of the turn-of-the-century. He focused on reviving the music and re-building the instruments of legendary Genovese harp-guitarist Pasquale Taraffo (1887-1937). This work led to the recording of two CDs “Serenata” (1997) and “Traversata” (2001) with classical mandolinist Carlo Aonzo and American mandolin icon David Grisman. \nHe has continued his research along the path of musicians and emigrations including to date producing shows of Italian revival in Europe\, US and Argentina. \nIn 2001\, Beppe Gambetta and his wife Federica Calvino Prina inaugurated “Beppe Gambetta Acoustic Nights”\, a series of annual concerts that bring together different top-notch International musicians each year\, planned around a special musical “theme”. Held each spring at the 1000-seat Teatro della Corte in Genova\, Italy for three or four consecutive evenings\, the performances have established themselves as one of the preeminent events in the European musical scene and are regularly broadcast live by the Italian National Radio (RAI Radio 3). \nFrom 2002 to today\, Beppe Gambetta focused his work mainly on his solo career\, touring constantly and naturally and seamlessly joining the shores of the two continents\, Europe and America\, creating in spite of the interposed ocean a musical fusion where American root music and Ligurian tradition\, emigration songs and folk ballads\, steel string guitars and vintage harp guitars not only co-exist but interact\, weaving a deep dialog unaware of any rigid classification. \nOn April 23\, 2019 Beppe was awarded with the title of “Genoa Ambassador To The World” by the Genoa Mayor Marco Bucci for the following reason: \n“Beppe Gambetta has built countless bridges between Genoa and the Americas\, combining the rich culture of his hometown with the beauty of the American roots and adding in his compositions contemporary influences to the traditions he mastered. He has been a true Ambassador of the Genovese culture in all his studies\, productions and performances”. \nFor his 14th CD (Where The Wind Blows\, Borealis Records\, Canada 2020) Beppe Gambetta revealed himself to be not simply a master guitarist but also a new songwriter of great feeling\, wisdom and maturity. “Where the Wind Blows” is a collection of songs and tunes all written\, arranged and performed by Beppe with the extraordinary collaboration of American bass player Rusty Holloway and percussionist Joe Bonadio. \nThe CD title track “Dove Tia O Vento” was a finalist in the “Best Song” Category at the Italian Awards Premio Tenco 2020. \n

SUMMARY:Peter Mulvey with Mike Laureanno at Linden Tree in Wakefield\, $25
DESCRIPTION:Linden Tree Concerts presents PETER MULVEY \nWith opener: Mike Laureanno.    March 9th at 7:30 pm $25 \nThe Linden Tree Concert ‘s thirty-ninth season continues on Saturday\, March 9th with veteran singer-songwriter Peter Mulvey.  Peter has recently launched a new 18 sog solo CD\, “More Notes From Elsewhere.” That is already receiving great reviews. Mike Laureanno\, our Winter Potpourri Winner\, will perform an opening set. \n Peter Mulvey has been a songwriter\, road-dog\, raconteur and almost-poet since before he can remember. Raised working-class Catholic on the Northwest side of Milwaukee\, he took a semester in Ireland\, and immediately began cutting classes to busk on Grafton Street in Dublin and hitchhike through the country\, finding whatever gigs he could. Back stateside\, he spent a couple years gigging in the Midwest before lighting out for Boston\, where he returned to busking (this time in the subway) and coffeehouses. Small shows led to larger shows\, which eventually led to regional and then national and international touring. The wheels have not stopped since. \nPeter has kept busy with nineteen records\, an illustrated book\, thousands of live performances\, a TEDx talk\, a decades-long association with the National Youth Science Camp\, opening for luminaries such as Ani DiFranco\, Emmylou Harris\, and Chuck Prophet\, appearances on NPR\, and an annual autumn tour by bicycle supporting causes such as the Trustees of Reservations. Mulvey never stops. He has built his life’s work on collaboration and an instinct for the eclectic and the vital. Peter folds everything he encounters into his work: poetry\, social justice\, scientific literacy\, & a deeply abiding humanism are all on plain display in his art. His music is inventive with roots in rock and roll\, folk\, jazz\, spoken word\, and Americana. petermulvey.com \n Mike Laureanno was the audience favorite at December’s Winter Potpourri\, He is a passionate performer\, with songs that are visceral and evocative. He is proud of his routes and many of hs songs deal with his gritty-blue collar hometown and the lives of his friends and family.  An excellent songwriter proven by his winning the 2017 Wildflower\, Texas songwriting contest. mikelaureanno.com \nTickets for this show will be $25\, for those under 18 are $10. WUMB members receive a $2 discount with their membership card. We accept cash or personal check at the door.  Reservations are recommended for preferential seating by calling 781 246 2836. SUMMARY:The Mammals
DESCRIPTION:“In the vanguard of today’s vibrant folk revival” – PopMatters \n\n“One of New York State’s finest treasures.” – Americana UK \n“Some of the best folk-rock music you will ever hear.” – TapeOp \n“Some of the best songwriting of their generation.” – LA Times \n“These two will shatter any preconceived stereotypical notions of what it means to be a folk musician.” – Coastal Journal \n“Nonet marshals the defiant spirit needed to heal a damaged world”   – No Depression \nThe Mammals are folksingers Ruth Ungar\, Mike Merenda\, and a cohort of compelling collaborators who form a touring quintet on the fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, organ\, bass\, and drums. Over the past 20 years they have quietly composed a canon of original songs (“Some of the best songwriting of their generation.” -LA Times) that both reflect our culture and offer a vision of how the world might yet be.  “These days we sing about what we’re for over what we’re against\,” says songwriter\, Mike Merenda\, and what they’re for is “nothing short of sublime” according to Americana UK. \nA rough and tumble decade in the 00’s forged The Mammals identity as “subversive acoustic traditionalists” (Boston Globe) or a “party band with a conscience.” Re-emerging in 2017 from a hibernation period during-which the band’s founders explored new songwriting terrain\, The Mammals “don’t suffer from multiple genre syndrome\, they celebrate it as if gleefully aware that the sound barriers separating old-timey music\, vintage pop and contemporary folk are as permeable as cotton” (Washington Post).  Their latest album\, Nonet\, “marshalls the defiant spirit needed to heal a damaged world” (No Depression).  In 2023 they released a series of singles recorded at their own Humble Abode Music\, as well as issuing bonus material from 2020’s landmark album Nonet. \nRuth is the daughter of legendary fiddler\, Jay Ungar\, composer of the storied “Ashokan Farewell.” You can catch The Mammals semi-annually at The Hoot\, a folk festival they curate and produce at The Ashokan Center in Olivebridge\, NY. \n“Hailed by many as Americana trailblazers and exuding togetherness on stage\, [The Mammals] are also gently-mannered activists with well-crafted songs that successfully ask potent questions and raise issues to probe how we can improve the planet. They deliver their material persuasively and in an eloquent manner with enjoyment of their music underpinning the approach overall. The music is the motivator throughout.”

SUMMARY:Eileen Ivers
DESCRIPTION:“Not everything in life is beautiful\, but there sure is beauty in life. To seek it\, embrace it\, and let it shine embodies a good life. Scatter the light…” EILEEN \nShe’s been called a “sensation” by Billboard magazine and “the Jimi Hendrix of the violin\,” by The New York Times. “She electrifies the crowd with a dazzling show of virtuoso playing” says The Irish Times \n  \nGrammy awarded\, Emmy nominated\, London Symphony Orchestra\, Boston Pops\, guest starred with over 50 orchestras\, original Musical Star of Riverdance\, Nine Time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion\, Sting\, Hall and Oates\, The Chieftains\, ‘Fiddlers 3′ with Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and Regina Carter\, Patti Smith\, Al Di Meola\, Steve Gadd\, founding member of Cherish the Ladies\, movie soundtracks including “Gangs of New York”\, performed for Presidents and Royalty worldwide…this is a short list of accomplishments\, headliners\, tours\, and affiliations. Fiddler Eileen Ivers has established herself as the pre-eminent exponent of the Irish fiddle in the world today. \n  \nIt is a rare and select grade of spectacular artists whose work is so boldly imaginative and clearly virtuosic that it alters the medium. It has been said that the task of respectfully exploring the traditions and progression of the Celtic fiddle is quite literally on Eileen Ivers’ shoulders. The Washington Post states\, “She suggests the future of the Celtic fiddle.” \n  \nShe’s been called a “sensation” by Billboard magazine and “the Jimi Hendrix of the violin\,” by The New York Times. “She electrifies the crowd with a dazzling show of virtuoso playing” says The Irish Times. \n  \nIvers’ recording credits include over 80 contemporary and traditional albums and numerous movie scores. Eileen is hailed as one of the great innovators and pioneers in the Celtic and World music genres. \nThe daughter of Irish immigrants\, Eileen Ivers grew up in the culturally diverse neighborhood of the Bronx\, New York. Rooted in Irish traditional music since the age of eight\, Eileen proceeded to win nine All-Ireland fiddle championships\, a tenth on tenor banjo and over 30 championship medals\, making her one of the most awarded persons ever to compete in these prestigious competitions. \n  \nBeing an Irish-American\, the intrigue of learning more about the multicultural sounds of her childhood took hold. After graduating magna cum laude in Mathematics from Iona College and while continuing her post-graduate work in Mathematics\, Eileen fully immersed herself in the different genres of music which she experienced growing up in New York. With “unIVERSal roots”\, her energetic\, joyous\, passionate band\, Eileen continues to connect music\, cultures\, stories\, and emotions that tie us together. In 2019\, Iona College conferred upon Eileen Ivers the degree of Doctor of Arts\, honoris causa for her “lifelong commitment to innovation\, excellence and deep dedication to bringing people together through music.” \nEileen and her ensemble headline prestigious performing arts centers\, guest star with numerous symphonies\, perform at major festivals worldwide\, and have appeared on national and international television. The L.A. Times proclaims\, “Ivers’ presentation was music with the kind of life and spirit that come together when talented artists from different backgrounds find the linkages that connect all forms of music…no wonder the audience loved every minute.” \n  \nhttps://www.eileenivers.com/about \n

SUMMARY:WS Monroe & Friends at Stone Soup Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Many Stone Soup Coffeehouse attendees probably know WS Monroe\, or “Bill\,” as one of the dedicated sound people behind the big board at each of our shows. What they may not know is that Bill is also an accomplished musician and he will be performing for the first time in his own Stone Soup show on March 23\, 2024 at The Music Mansion\, 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906. Box Office opens at 6:00. Doors to the listening room open at 6:30. The show begins at 7 pm.\n\nMonroe has been playing music for more than 50 years. First influenced by the country music he heard as a child\, and then by the folk-rock of the Lovin’ Spoonful and the Byrds\, and by the folk revival of the ’60’s\, he began to attend the Philadelphia Folk Festival in 1969 where he was introduced to real traditional music. With all these influences (and some Beatles\, Motown\, blues\, and jazz)\, he performs what he calls “eclectic folk music”. He is mainly a singer\, and sometimes he just sings\, with no accompaniment. However\, when he first wanted to sing\, that option did not occur to him\, so he taught himself to play the guitar\, and then the mandolin\, and then the concertina and the mountain dulcimer. He usually performs solo\, but also plays with others: sometimes with his wife and children (now grown)\, and sometimes with Matteo Casini (who can do a lot of things he can’t do on the guitar)\, and sometimes with anyone who is willing to join him. More recently\, he has been a regular member of The Providence Wholebellies\, a wild and eclectic band\, and with the Quahog Quire\, an a cappella group that does work songs\, hymns\, children’s songs\, and more. More recently\, the Quire has produced an offshoot\, the Quahog Qafé\, which adds instrumentation to its usual mix. Tonight\, Bill will be accompanied by some of these talented friends.\n\nTickets are $22 and are available at the door or with reservation through our website.

SUMMARY:co-bill: Hayley Reardon and The Clements Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for those age 18 and under. Visit oldslooppresents.org\, John Tarr Store in Rockport\, or The Bookstore of Gloucester. The suggested contribution at the door is $25 for adults\, $5 for those age 18 and under\, and $50 for families. \nTickets and more information\nCape Ann boasts a great live music scene and some terrific musicians. But some recent arrivals have been fabulous additions. \nHayley Reardon is a critically acclaimed folk/pop artist and a storyteller in the truest sense of the word. Her songs serve as postcards from an artist brave enough to take the road less traveled. The songstress made the decision to begin living life boldly when she left Nashville to tour the world playing her music. In addition to having recently been based in Dachau\, Germany for a six month artist residency program awarded by the city\, she has spent the past 5 years carrying her songs and guitar all over the globe — gathering experiences\, inspirations\, and soulful connections along the way. The artist masterfully channels her colorful stories through music\, capturing even the most subtle nuances of the human experience with a striking clarity. \nThe Clements Brothers are George and Charles Clements\, identical twins from New England. They’ve been playing and writing music together for as long as they can remember and ‘The Clements Brothers’ marks their first project together since playing in the internationally touring grass-roots band\, ‘The Lonely Heartstring Band’ with whom they put out two albums on Rounder Records. With roots\, rock\, bluegrass\, jazz\, and classical influences\, George (on guitar) and Charles (on bass) aim to capture their singer-songwriter sensibilities in a unique blended voice\, at once enthralling and intimate\, groovy and serene. They are often joined by drummer Mike Harmon\, who joined the band after an impromptu late night set at the Ossipee Music festival\, and adds his unique roots-conscious musicality to the group’s evolving sound.  The trio is a fusion of each member’s unique musical journey\, and the result is music all its own\, filled with vocal harmonies\, instrumental virtuosity\, and a genuine love of song.

SUMMARY:David Francey
DESCRIPTION:“Francey’s clear\, simple songs speak volumes to his followers. After a decade in music\, David Francey is known as one of Canada’s finest tunesmiths and a champion of the Everyman\, admired for his less-is-more approach to writing. It’s amazing how he manages to address deep stuff with such spare ingredients”\n… The Edmonton Journal \n“One of Canada’s outstanding poets\, songwriters\, storytellers. That’s David Francey with a lovely little tribute to tonight.”\n… Ron MacLean\, Hockey Night in Canada Following the Canadian Heritage Classic Hockey Game \n\nDavid Francey is a Scottish-born Canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter\, who has become known as “one of Canada’s most revered folk poets and singers” (Toronto Star). Born in Ayrshire\, Scotland to parents who were factory workers\, he moved to Canada when he was twelve. For decades\, he worked across Canada in rail yards\, construction sites\, and in the Yukon bush\, all the while writing poetry\, setting it to melodies in his head and singing it to himself as he worked. \nA truly authentic folk singer\, Francey is a documentarian of the working person who never imagined earning a living from his music. But when he was in his 40s\, his wife\, artist Beth Girdler\, encouraged him to share his songs and sing in public. The reaction was instant. His first album Torn Screen Door came out in 1999 and was a hit in Canada. Since then\, he has released eleven albums\, won three Juno Awards and has had his songs covered by such artists as The Del McCoury Band\, The Rankin Family\, James Keelaghan and Tracy Grammer. \nFrancey also had the honour of receiving the prestigious SOCAN Folk Music Award as well as taking home the Grand Prize in both the International Acoustic Music Award and in the Folk category for the John Lennon Songwriting Award. \n“David’s straightforward songs tell honest stories of real people and real places. Poetic perception and a keen eye for the heart of the matter are trademarks of the man and his music. His songs and stories are a direct connection for audiences seeking depth and meaning in the day-to-day.” Shelter Valley Folk Festival \nDavid Francey was born in Ayrshire\, Scotland where he got his first taste of the working life as a paperboy. At age 10 he was devouring the newspapers he delivered\, establishing a life-long interest in politics and world events while developing the social conscience that forms the backdrop of his songs. \nHe was twelve when his family immigrated to Toronto. He says he can trace his love of the land\, the history\, and the people of his adopted country to weekend family drives exploring southern Ontario. Music played a large part in these family outings. They sang traditional Scottish tunes as they drove through the Canadian countryside. Dad and sister Muriel sang melody\, while mother and David sang harmonies. \nHis attachment to Canada grew with travel. He hitched across the country three times\, then thumbed his way to the Yukon. This attachment surfaces in his songs of rail lines\, farms\, and the St. Lawrence Seaway. He grew to understand the people while working in Toronto train yards\, the Yukon bush\, and as a carpenter in the Eastern Townships. These experiences colour his first CD\, Torn Screen Door\, with songs like Hard Steel Mill\, Gypsy Boys\, and Working Poor and his second\, Far End of Summer\, with Highway\, Flowers of Saskatchewan and February Morning Drive. \nIn concert David is a singer and a storyteller. His wry humour and astute observations combined with his openhearted singing style have earned him a loyal following. \nDavid lives with his wife\, artist Beth Girdler in the quiet but charming Lanark Highlands in southern Ontario. They are visited often by their son Colin\, daughters Amy and Julia and grandkids Tristan\, Alice and Millicent. \n© 2019 Beth Girdler \nhttps://www.davidfrancey.com/

SUMMARY:Kemp Harris and Alastair Moock at The Linden Tree
DESCRIPTION:Linden Tree Concerts presents Kemp Harris and Alastair Moock \nSaturday\, April 6\, 2024 at 7:30 pm \n  \nLinden Tree concerts’ thirty-ninth season continues with Kemp Harris and Alastair Moock on Saturday\, April 6that 7:30 pm.  This show promises to lift up your spirit with these two master performers\, a show for all ages. \nWe are welcoming to Linden Tree’s stage for the first time Kemp Harris\, a singer-songwriter who defies categorization. He is a singer and songwriter\, a master weaver of American musical styles. He’s an actor\, activist\, author\, and storyteller\, and an award-winning educator who has taught young public school students for more than 40 years. \n“It’s all about communication\,” Kemp says. “Everything I do.” “Nobody tries to pigeonhole me\,” says a delighted Kemp\, “My audience allows me to be myself and do it all.” \nBorn in segregated Edenton\, North Carolina\, and transplanted to Massachusetts\, where he bounced between relatives’ homes\, Kemp learned to adapt to whatever world he found himself in – a talent that has come to define him as a person and an artist. He began writing songs at 14 and recording them in college\, using a pair of old cassette players to track parts\, and has been delighting music lovers ever since with his earthy\, soulful creations. \nKemp honed his powerful\, intimate performance style in Cambridge’s coffeehouses\, developing into a magnetic frontman who has shared stages with artists such as Koko Taylor\, Livingston Taylor\, Gil Scott-Heron\, Kandace Springs and Taj Mahal. He has composed original music for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Complexions Contemporary Ballet\, established a songwriting residency at Boston’s Wang Theater\, and recently delivered a series of master classes at Berklee College of Music on the subject of Artists as Activists\, alongside Chad Stokes of the band Dispatch and members of the dance troupe Urban Bush Women. \nKemp’s most recent album\, Edenton\, featuring vocals from the legendary Holmes Brothers\, is a modern blues journey that fuses the personal and the political\, the sacred and the profane\, to haunting effect. Edenton’s title track\, a bittersweet valentine to his birthplace\, explores a simpler time in a racially-divided town with the clear-eyed grace that is a hallmark of Kemp’s work. Everything he makes is built on a foundation of social awareness and the desire to reflect the world as he sees and experiences it. Whether he’s performing a rousing soul tune backed by a 14-piece orchestra in a grand concert hall or a hushed meditation alone at his piano\, Kemp speaks truth the only way he knows how: by baring his soul. Linden Tree invites those who haven’t seen Kemp before to join fans who have discovered this seasoned Renaissance man.  kempharrisbandbio \nAward winning singer songwriter Alastair Moock has been a long time favorite of Linden Tree’s audience ever since he began performing the Boston coffeehouse circuit in 1995. He has gone onto tour the USA and Europe\, performing at  renowned events like the Newport Folk Festival and Norway’s Bergen Music Fest and opening for acts like sharing the stage with acts like Arlo Guthrie\, Taj Mahal\, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot\, and Greg Brown.  Alastair Moock is an award-winning singer-songwriter having won songwriting contests at Falcon Ridge\, Great Waters and Sisters Folk Festivals. He was nominated for a Boston Music Award for Outstanding Singer-Songwriter of the Year. The Boston Globe calls him “one of the town’s best and most adventurous songwriters” and The Washington Post says “every song is a gem. \nWhen his twin daughters were born\, he turned his focus for a time to family music. His five albums for children have garnered many of the top awards in American children’s music\, including a 2013 Grammy Nomination\, three Parents’ Choice Gold Medals\, and ASCAP’s Joe Raposo Children’s Music Award.  In recent years\, Alastair has focused his career on the mission of uplifting historically marginalized voices.  Alastair co-founded two antiracism organizations\, Family Music Forward\, and in Boston\, The Opening Doors Project\, an anti-racist music organization through which he collaborates regularly with the likes of Reggie Harris\, Pamela Means\, Vance Gilbert\, and Kemp Harris. They use music to entertain and educate audiences of all ages around racial understanding and communication. \nHis most recent CD is a self-titled ALASTAIR MOOCK evokes a wide breadth of American musical textures: early Nashville\, country blues\, Western swing\, and a tinge of gospel. But most of all\, the album is infused with the kind of intimate storyteller’s approach at which Moock excels. The songs on ALASTAIR MOOCK touch on death and love\, politics\, marriage and family\, big universal questions and minute everyday observations. It’s a hard album to pin down\, but then Moock has always been a hard songwriter to pin down. “I don’t care who I’m singing to\,” he says\, “I just want to tell stories.” \nTickets for this show will be $25\, for those under 18 are $10. WUMB members receive a $2 discount with their membership card. We accept cash or personal check at the door.  Reservations are recommended for preferential seating by calling 781 246 2836. SUMMARY:Sara Grey and Kieron Means House Concert
DESCRIPTION:General admission: $20\, $5 for students \nConcert will be held in a private home in Brookline MA.\nReservations required: email HouseConcerts@fssgb.org for reservations and directions. \nSara Grey is one of the most gifted and knowledgeable artists working in the field of traditional music. Sara’s singing is both powerful and sweet\, with a distinctive and lovely tremolo. It is a voice well suited to native American songs and ballads of Ireland and Scotland. \nIt is not Sara’s lovely voice alone that makes her one of the most popular singers on the folk scene; on many of her songs Sara accompanies herself by frailing a five string banjo and\, when playing dance tunes\, it is obvious why she is regarded as one of the foremost exponents of the clawhammer style. As well as singing and playing\, Sara is well known for her storytelling – specialising in stories from New England where she grew up learning many of her stories from her father. \nSara grew up in New Hampshire but has lived in North Carolina\, Ohio\, Montana\, New York\, Pennsylvania\, Arizona\, Wales\, Scotland and England. As a youngster in North Carolina she developed a love for old time songs and banjo music. She cites Kyle Creed as the chief influence on her understated\, syncopated clawhammer banjo style. She has now been performing professionally for more than 30 years. \n\n“She is one of a select band of performers who still breathe life into traditional ballads.” Vic Smith\, Folk Roots\n“Sara Grey has quietly and powerfully taken over the mantle of premier interpreter of American traditional music.” Tor Jonassen\, WRDV\n\nKieron Means is a singer primarily of traditional songs but also of contemporary songs and guitar player of great merit. He has a great rapport with an audience and has an exceptional professionalism for a young performer. His voice is as smooth as silk\, rich and mellow and he sings to his audience not in spite of them. \nKieron is the son of the traditional singer Sara Grey and music journalist Andrew Means\, one time writer for Melody Maker. He was born in the United States and grew up in Britain gaining a great love of the music of both traditions as well as the contemporary scene. He has become a performer of traditional songs from the US and from the UK and many of the contemporary songs he sings he has written himself. \nHe has toured in the States and often performed with Sara Grey. In 2000 he has performed at Whitby and Wadebridge festivals where he was received with much acclaim. His first CD has received much praise with air play on Travelling Folk and Mr Anderson’s Fine Tunes both on radio Scotland. An article on him will shortly be appearing in Folk Roots magazine.

SUMMARY:Molly Mason and Jay Ungar
DESCRIPTION:“On stage\, Mason and Ungar complement each other like a finely crafted fiddle and bow. Together they weave a rich postmodern musical magic carpet on which listeners may vicariously glide back in time and experience first-hand the sonorous riches of traditional music.”\n-David S. Rotenstein\, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette \n“Jay Ungar and Molly Mason play music from the heart which reminds us of the best in all of us.”\n-Ken Burns\, producer of PBS’ “The Civil War” \nHe was a Bronx kid. She grew up in Washington State. He was raised on pop music of the 1940s and ’50s. She had a fondness for traditional fiddle music and ’30s and ’40s popular tunes. He hung out in Greenwich Village coffeehouses and roamed North Carolina and Tennessee in search of traditional players. She played clubs and colleges on the West Coast and took a liking to the jazzy sound of the Swing Era. Since joining forces—both artistically and romantically (the two would marry in 1991)—Jay Ungar and Molly Mason have become one of the most celebrated duos on the American acoustic music scene. \nIt started with a chance meeting in the late 1970s. Jay and Molly were each performing at the Towne Crier\, a rural New York club. They hit it off musically and played together from time to time until Molly headed off to Minnesota to work in the house band of a new radio show: Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion. Meanwhile\, back in New York\, Jay put together a band with fellow fiddlers Evan Stover and Matt Glaser and guitarist Russ Barenberg. When Fiddle Fever\, as the collaboration was called\, needed a bassist\, Molly signed on. The group recorded two classic LPs\, now available on CD as The Best of Fiddle Fever (Flying Fish Records). \nThe early ’80s also saw the beginning of Jay’s Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps\, a world-renowned destination for enthusiasts of American music and dance traditions. Several years later\, Molly became a full partner in designing and running these programs\, which are still going strong. \n1984 found Fiddle Fever band members Matt Glaser and Russ Barenberg working with a young filmmaker on a documentary called The Brooklyn Bridge. They gave Ken Burns a copy of Fiddle Fever’s second LP\, Waltz of the Wind\, which included Jay’s Ashokan Farewell. Burns was so taken with the evocative and haunting melody\, he used it in his next film\, Huey\, about Louisiana Governor Huey Long\, and he wound up inviting Jay and Molly to provide music for many of his projects. The high point to date of this long relationship was the selection of Ashokan Farewell as the main theme of Burns’ landmark PBS documentary The Civil War. The result: an Emmy nomination for Jay and a Grammy for the soundtrack album. And the tune seems to have taken on a life of its own. Now considered an American “folk” classic\, it is played by fiddlers and classical musicians worldwide. In the British Isles\, a recording of Ashokan Farewell by Her Majesty’s Royal Marines has remained high on the classical charts for several years. It has been performed by major orchestras\, and has been recorded by artists from Mark O’Connor to Pinchas Zuckerman\, James Galway to Charlie Byrd\, Jerry Garcia\, David Grisman and The Osborne Brothers to Polka King Jimmy Sturr. \nAfter signing with Angel Records in 1991\, Jay and Molly—in collaboration with baritone Thomas Hampson and pianist David Alpher—released American Dreamer\, a collection of the songs of Stephen Foster. They followed with Waltzing with You\, an elaboration on their score for the film Brother’s Keeper\, a Sundance Film Festival prizewinner. Perhaps the duo’s best-known composition is the title track of The Lovers’ Waltz\, an album of romantic fiddle music from Appalachian\, Scandinavian\, Celtic\, Klezmer and Swing traditions. The CD also features a medley of melodies written by composer James Horner—ones that Jay had previously performed with the London Symphony in Horner’s score for the Sony Tristar filmLegends of the Fall. Harvest Home\, Jay and Molly’s 1999 release on Angel Records\, culminates in their 20-minute orchestral work\, The Harvest Home Suite\, in which they are joined by the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. In 2002\, Jay and Molly produced\, arranged and performed on A Song of Home\, a collaborative recording for RCA\, with flutist Sir James Galway\, mandolinist Peter Ostroushko and bassist Steve Rust. Now\, with Relax Your Mind (Angel Records)\, Jay and Molly\, with their band Swingology\, take a slightly different direction: American dance music with a focus on country blues and swing. Included are more of the beautiful waltzes that have become their signature pieces.\nOn radio and television\, Jay and Molly have appeared on CBS Good Morning\, The Rosie O’Donnel Show\, All Things Considered\, A Prairie Home Companion\, and the BBC’s Transatlantic Sessions. And they have no shortage of future musical projects. \nQuite the odyssey for the West Coast girl and the kid from the Bronx.
