A passionate performer\, Mike’s songs are visceral and evocative. He is proud of his roots and many of his songs deal with his gritty blue-collar hometown and the lives of his family and friends. He is a winner of the 2017 Wildflower\, TX songwriting contest\, the 2016 Woody Guthrie songwriting contest and a 2016 Kerrville New Folk\, TX finalist.  mikelaureanno.com \nAnne Sandstrom is a singer-songwriter who draws inspiration from life (and near-death) experiences\, history\, social issues\, and even books. She carefully crafts lyrics and sets them to intricate melodies\, accompanied by guitar played in one of a number of open tunings. Although trained in music theory and composition as a high school student at Berklee\, Anne relies on her innate musical sense to create her poetic songs. During COVID lockdown\, Anne took the opportunity to virtually travel to the U.S. southwest\, Scotland\, England\, and Israel\, where enthusiastic audiences requested numerous repeat appearances. Her music was featured in a video produced by Nobel Peace Prize recipient International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. She has also performed at events to advocate for nuclear disarmament.  https://annesandstrom.bandcamp.com/ \nPete Vilbig\, a fiction writer and former journalist\, writes songs that combine strong narrative and evocative language\, often about the American scene. Pete covered the contra war in Central America for the Boston Globe and crime and politics in Miami for the Miami Herald\, but he’s also been a furniture mover\, apartment painter\, a group home counselor\, and a New York City public high school teacher. SUMMARY:Stone Soup Coffeehouse Presents Wintesong / Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem
DESCRIPTION:We New Englanders have two primary coping mechanisms for wintertime: introspection and celebration. We hole up and reflect on our lives\, and then we let loose and party. Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem’s Wintersong program does both\, swinging from a 15th century carol to fiddle- and percussion-driven New Year’s shouts from the Georgia Sea Islands and Louisiana\, to bluesy and banjo-driven settings of modern songwriters — and then back\, to original settings of verse from Tennyson\, Chesterton\, and Longfellow.\nThere are songs about a baby born in Bethlehem\, including the electric guitar-driven “Let’s Make a Baby King” (by Jesse Winchester)\, a soaring version of the spiritual “Children\, Go Where I Send Thee;” and “Singing in the Land\,” an Appalachian hymn in four-part harmony. There are also songs about love and war\, loss and hope. There are songs about the emptiness of commercial Christmas\, and the fullness of the ideas that brought it to be.\n\nRani Arbo & daisy mayhem’s Wintersong program sidesteps the holiday canon and digs up the power\, beauty and hopeful yearning at the roots of this holiday. These are songs — and musicians —full of fierce poetry and wild joy; this program is their ode to light and dark\, and to the balance of both at the turn of the year.

SUMMARY:Randall Kromm
DESCRIPTION:Suggested donation is $15 at the door. \nA lifelong musician with a background in musical theater\, early music\, and the 1980s Boston indie pop scene\, Randall Kromm reinvented himself as a folksinger in 2009 and soon realized he’d found his musical home.  Playing at coffeehouses\, open mikes\, and clubs in the greater Boston area\, Randall quickly distinguished himself as a songwriter and performer.  In the years since\, he has performed sold-out shows at Club Passim\, New England’s premier folk venue\, released four CDs\, Water Wheel (2011)\, Holidays and Homecomings (2011)\, Time Won’t Let Us Stay (2014)\, and Rough and Polished Stones (2017)\, and received a multitude of accolades from the music community\, including Christine Lavin and Don White. \nRandall is an adherent to the principle of writing what you know\, Randall composing  beautifully crafted songs of ordinary life that focus on themes of family\, relationships\, and growing older with wit and insight.  His most recent CD\, Rough and Polished Stones\, was chosen by Folk DJ Rich Warren of the Midnight Special radio program as “Rich’s pick” for the month of October 2017 and in 2018 received a glowing review in the premier roots music publication No Depression.  The review lauds Randall’s effective songwriting across a variety of genres\, comparing it to the work of Hank Williams and Towns Van Zandt\, and concludes: “Randall is covering a genre that Tom Waits isn’t\, that Leonard Cohen touched upon but never developed\, that Buddy Miller and John Prine do but always seem to pour a little vinegar in.  Kromm pours no whiskey into his tunes. They are just wholeheartedly the truth – the naked truth.” \nA prolific songwriter\, Randall frequently returns to the studio\, often joined by his two oldest daughters\, Emma and Grace\, talented singers in their own right who have a natural gift for harmony.  Randall currently working on a new CD of holiday-themed songs\, Sentimental Season\, due to be released on October 1\, 2018.  Randall also performs regularly at folk venues in and around Boston.

Your playing is soulful and sensitive — when you came onstage you brought a special ‘lightness’ that everyone felt. What a night — thank you so much — can’t wait to work with you again!” \nOriginally trained as a classical violinist\, Jackie has developed a unique improvisational style over a range of genres including jazz\, folk\, blues\, acoustic rock\, and popular music. From halls and clubs to the recording studio\, Jackie’s warm and sweet\, passionate and evocative violin playing leaves listeners profoundly affected and deeply moved. SUMMARY:The Kennedys
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: NEW earlier showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\nTwo of our favorites return! At well over a million miles of roadwork\, including two stints as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, Pete and Maura Kennedy show no signs of slowing down either on tour or in the creative realm. \nSongwriting duo Pete and Maura Kennedy make a strong return to the studio and stage after three years of weekly live-streamed lockdown-era concerts. They took the opportunity to explore classic songwriting in depth\, performing over a thousand songs during the pandemic. That vast overview strengthened and refined their own writing and laid the foundation for this new collection of original\, socially-conscious songs. \n“After such a deep dive into American roots music\, we felt like we had a new set of writing tools. We were ready to create this body of work\, and there’s just SO much to write about\,” says Maura. “During our five-year hiatus from writing and recording\, America changed in massive ways\, divisive ways that have shaken our whole foundation. That has to be addressed by creative artists\, those of us who have a voice to speak for others. Our love of the great things about this country\, things that are under threat\, is the reason we decided to make “Headwinds” the title track of the CD. Political and social headwinds are making it hard to get back “home’ to our greatness as a nation. We want to push back in a positive way against those winds.” \nIn addition to singing and writing\, Pete and Maura are multi-instrumentalists. The thirteen songs are cast in a soundscape that draws from the classic canon of American roots\, in keeping with the theme of getting back “home” as a nation. Acoustic and electric guitars\, a vintage steel guitar\, a gospel-inflected piano/organ mix\, and even a slide ukulele all add colors to a songbag of sounds that have drawn us together during hard times. Pete and Maura believe that those sounds still have the power to pull us through again. \nThe Kennedys began their writing and touring life three decades ago as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, developing their own sound as a frequent support act on Nanci’s tours across America\, Ireland\, Scotland and England. Collaborations with Nanci continued\, culminating in Pete and Maura producing her final album\, “Intersections.” Along the way\, they hosted a nationwide radio program\, “The Dharma Cafe” on Sirius/XM\, wrote and released sixteen CDs of original music\, and have been core artists on folk radio\, expanding their audience further with the inception of the AAA and Americana formats.

SUMMARY:Leslie Mendelson — Kim Moberg opens
DESCRIPTION:If Leslie Mendelson’s only collaboration with a legendary musician was Jackson Browne\, it would be a worthy point to celebrate. What’s truly telling is that Leslie has also drawn the attention of The Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir who recorded a duet with her on Roy Orbison’s standard\, “Blue Bayou\,” while no less than classic rock royalty The Who invited her to open two shows at Madison Square Garden last year. She was set to open three more dates for the band in 2020 that were unfortunately postponed due to the pandemic. With some of rock music’s most legitimate voices seeking Leslie out\, it leaves no doubt the rarefied air she inhabits as an artist. \nAward winning singer/songwriter Kim Moberg was born in Juneau\, Alaska\, the daughter of a classical pianist mother of Alaskan Native Tlingit descent and a US Coast Guard veteran father from Kansas. Music was the constant in Kim’s childhood\, helping her to adjust to the frequent moves associated with growing up in a military family. \nAdvance tickets are $17 for adults and $5 for those age 18 and under. Visit oldslooppresents.org\, John Tarr Store in Rockport\, or The Bookstore of Gloucester. The suggested contribution at the door is $22 for adults\, $5 for those age 18 and under\, and $44 for families

SUMMARY:Carla Ryder & the Blue Ribbons at Niagara Coffee Haus
DESCRIPTION:Carla Ryder & the Blue Ribbons at Niagara Coffee Haus \nJoin us for a fantastic night of live music with Carla Ryder & the Blue Ribbons! \nRock n’ roll flapper\, garage serenader\, front porch chanteuse and country crooner\, Carla Ryder is authentic\, heartfelt fun! She cut her teeth in the Boston Music scene\, as lead singer of the beloved Mudhens in the late 90’s. With that band she opened for the likes of Neil Young\, Beck\, Bob Dylan\, Paul Simon\, Jonatha Brooke\, Primus\, 10\,000 Maniacs\, Cake\, Ben Folds 5\, Guster \, The Push Stars\, Janis Ian\, Bill Staines\, and Jon Pussett Dart. Nominated for a Boston Music Award\, the band went on to record 3 albums with LA producer extraordinaire Anthony Resta\, selling over 12\,000 copies and receiving airplay on national\, local and AAA radio. \nFast forward to the Carla Ryder Band\, she teamed up with producer\, Adam Steinberg and recorded Til The End of Counting which garnered several placements in TV and Film as well as the prestigious International Songwriting Competition\, Billboard Song Contest and Great American Song Contest. Legendary singer/songwriter\, Bill Staines wrote of it\, “Carla is one of the best young songwriters around. I was totally taken with her CD”. \nAfter a short break welcoming the birth of her daughter and twin boys\, Carla joined forces with Amy Fairchild and Andy Santospago to form Miriam\, a honky-tonk swaggering\, country-infused rock n’ roll group featuring dueling female voices backed up by their longtime boot-stompin’ band. After releasing their critically acclaimed album\, “Scenic Two Lane” they quickly garnered a loyal following\, a coveted residency\, and were named Boston’s Best Americana Band in 2016. \nCarla recently hit her stride when she recorded and released Unguarded Heart with Boston favorites. The Blue Ribbons in 2018. Claiming two elusive finalist spots in the International Songwriting Competition as well as the Unsigned Only Competition\, this album reveals a depth of spirit and a window into the struggle and redemption of the human condition. Boston Globe critic Steve Morse\, calls Carla “An aspiring rock singer who seems to get better with each appearance. Almost too versatile to categorize.” \nphotos by Gretjen Helene \n\n\n\n\nCarla & the Ribbons will play two 40 minute sets with a 10 minute intermission. \nFirst set: 8pm to 8:40pm. 2nd set: 8:50pm to 9:30pm \nVisit her website at https://carlaryder.com

SUMMARY:Linden Tree presents Don White with Rob Siegel
DESCRIPTION:Linden Tree Concerts presents Don White in concert\,           \nRob Siegel\,  2022 Potpourri Winner \nNov. 4 at 7:30pm $25 \nThe Linden Tree 39th concert series continues with the often-amusing singer-songwriter Don White on Saturday\, November 4 at 7:30 pm.  Opening the night is Rob Siegel\, audience favorite from  last year’s Winter Potpourri. \nThere is no one-word description for what Don White does. He’s an award-winning singer/songwriter\, a comedian\, an author\, and a storyteller. He’s been bringing audiences to laughter and tears for thirty years\, released ten CDs\, three live DVDs\, and a book\, Memoirs of a C Student. His latest album is Live at the Guthrie Center\, available now. In 2011\, he won the Jerry Christen Memorial Award\, given out by Boston Area Coffeehouse Association\, for his work with the community and that same year was given a key to the city in his hometown of Lynn\, Massachusetts. \nDon’s approach to music is a unique blend. If he just played folk music\, it would be a handy label. But he has invented his own genre with a mix of humor and powerful songwriting. White’s arc as a writer and performer has taken him from his industrial hometown of Lynn\, Massachusetts\, through Boston’s comedy clubs and coffeehouses\, and onto stages around the country. At every point\, White has been the ultimate observer\, infusing his work with his experiences as a husband\, a father\, grandfather\, a seeker\, and a joker. \nWhite has opened for Arlo Guthrie\, Ritchie Havens. Louden Wainwright III\, and Taj Mahal\, shared a bill with David Bromberg\, Janis Ian\, and Lyle Lovett. White has been featured in storytelling festivals around the country including the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough\, Tennessee and the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival in Utah. Since 2015\, he has joined master storytellers Bil Lepp and Bill Harley in Father’s Daze\, a hilarious three-man storytelling show about the triumphs and tribulations of fatherhood. He toured North America for nine years with folk songwriting legend Christine Lavin\, with whom he still plays the occasional show most recently in September. \nRob Siegel is well-known in Boston folk music circles who describes himself as an innovative songwriter who draws from his idyllic yet stressed-out middle-class suburban existence and produces memorable well-crafted songs. Rob has opened for Bill Staines\, Vance Gilbert\, Catie Curtis\, Jack Hardy\, Geoff Muldaur\, and others. His 2000 debut CD Shaker Chair received airplay on the WUMB radio network\, and his 2004 CD Voices from the Right Brain reached #52 on the FolkDJ ranking\, which isn’t bad for a geophysicist who rarely traveled outside Massachusetts for a gig. Rob took his foot off the gigging pedal in the mid-2000s when he projected the college bills for his three kids\, but now that they’re grown\, he’s back. His first new CD in 14 years\, A Landscape of Ghosts\, was released in 2018 at a sold-out show at Club Passim and charted on FolkDJ.” Songs from his repertoire were our audience favorites naming him as Linden Tree’s Winter Potpourri Winner 2022. \nTickets will be $25\, cash or check at the door. Tickets for those under 13 are $10. Reservations for preferential seating are by calling 781-246-2836 .Linden Tree Concerts are held in Wakefield UU Church 326 Main St. Wakefield\, MA 01880 \nWe thank the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, Wakefield Chapter for supporting our concert series that has allowed us to bring quality programming to our community.  Linden Tree also  supports Fair Trade Music Local 1000. For more information see www.LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org and our Facebook page.
