SUMMARY:18th Annual Ballad Contest
DESCRIPTION:Young Singers Traditional Ballad Singing Contest – This year’s 18th Annual Traditional Ballad Singing Contest for contestants in grade 4 through age 25 will be held at 7 p.m. Friday March 29\, 2025 at South Shore Folk Music club\, located at First Parish Duxbury\, 842 Tremont St.\, Duxbury.  Club member Karen Haffner and Lynn Feingold\, past president of the Folk Song Society of Greater Boston\, organize this contest through the South Shore Folk Music Club!  The hosts love the traditional ballad so much\, they’ll pay young people to learn and perform a song this night!  Contestants must sign-up ahead by March 22 so the night can be planned and to confirm the ballad they have chosen meets the criteria established for the contest. \nNote the criteria:  A ballad is a song that tells a story.  A traditional ballad is so old that nobody knows who wrote it.  Your song must be a traditional ballad from England\, Ireland or Scotland such as Barbara Allen\, Molly Malone\, Jock o’ Hazeldean\, The Golden Vanity\, Mattie Groves\, Clerk Saunders\, Spencer the Rover\, The Cruel Mother\, Lord Randal\, Henry Martin\, John Riley\, Ned of the Hill\, Two Bonnie Boys\, Young Waters\, The Downie Dens of Yarrow\, The Wild Rover and many others you may choose. \nEvery year there are some returning balladeers and some new musicians.  Every contestant receives a CASH prize or CASH participation awards thanking them for sharing their ballad and listing Karen Haffner and Lynn Feingold as contacts for future interest in traditional ballads.  If you would like to hear some wonderful young people sing traditional ballads and lift your spirits\, come on down to the contest.  If you have any questions\, please email Karen at haffnerk@hotmail.com or text her:  517-875-2047.  Or contact Lynn at 781-227-7500. \nVisit www.ssfmc.org for details\, poster and contest form.  Follow us on Facebook:  Traditional Ballad Singing Competition for Students.  Note:  All performers – no charge!
