SUMMARY:High Tea Band
DESCRIPTION:High Tea is a Massachusetts-based “y’alternative” folk-punk duo with a unique blend of soulful harmonies and powerful guitar riffs. Lyricist\, guitarist and vocalist Isabella DeHerdt and percussionist and vocalist Isaac Eliot craft songs that are ripe with Americana heartbreak\, telling tales of growing up\, going wild\, and always coming back to the ones you love. \nPraised by the Boston Globe for their ability to “delve into the intimacies and intricacies of growing up\,” High Tea’s music resonates with audiences through its raw emotion and storytelling prowess. WBUR’s Amelia Mason notes their distinct vocal styles that “momentarily melt into one” during their harmonies. \nWith DeHerdt’s “raw and powerful voice” complemented by Eliot’s unadorned tones\, High Tea promises an evening of heartfelt performances that blend old blues\, new rock\, and intimate personal experiences. \nDoors open at 7:00 and the concert starts at 7:30. Tickets are $20 via Eventbrite and $25 at the door.

SUMMARY:Les Sampou - Nov. 16\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\n\n\n\n\n\nLes Sampou (pronounced “Less Sampoo”) is an Americana singer-songwriter\, who got her start in the Boston folk scene and moved on to national prominence and acclaim. Sampou has performed at Montreal Jazz Festival\, SXSW\, Toronto Blues Festival\, Kerrville Folk Festival (where she won the New Folk Songwriting Award)\, Philadelphia Folk Festival\, Winnipeg\, and Falcon Ridge to name a few. Sampou has conducted workshops at Berklee School of Music and appeared on top syndicated radio programs such as Acoustic Cafe\, World Cafe\, and NPR. Sampou has released seven albums\, five on her own label and two on Rounder Records. Her album\, “Fall from Grace”\, topped the Gavin Americana Charts nationwide. Her release “Lonesomeville” charted number 2 on the US/European Americana F.A.R. Charts and led to her performance at the SXSW Conference in Austin\, TX. To date\, Sampou has released seven albums of original material (See Sales on Menu). In 2021\, Les won the 26th Annual International Songwriters Award for lyric writing for her song “LIES FROM TRUTH.” \nSampou\, who lives on the South Shore of Boston\, began playing in the streets in what she terms as “relatively late in life.” At twenty five\, when all her friends were getting married\, buying houses and planning for kids\, Sampou started playing guitar and writing\, hitting the pavement to Harvard Square\, the tunnels of the MBTA subway\, and anywhere she could open her case for coin and applause. It was there she found her voice and polished her guitar playing and wrote the first of her prolific collection of songs\, many of which you will find on this site organized by genre. \nAfter cutting her teeth in the streets\, Les began playing area clubs\, doing the 9 pm – 1 am shifts for little or no cash that she sums up as “paying her dues.” After a couple years of the club scene\, Sampou found the coffeehouse scene. She describes this period by saying\, “Being in front of a listening audience was nerve wracking; my hands would shake and my voice would seize up. But I was hooked.” Les worked her stage fright and didn’t stop writing. Her first album “SWEET PERFUME” caught the attention of legendary DJ Dick Pleasants and it soon was on the doorstep of Rounder Records where she was immediately signed. Rounder released “Fall From Grace” and it hit the top of the charts of Gavin Americana Radio. \nSampou’s third disc\, the eponymously-titled album “LES SAMPOU\,” was a departure from her folk and blues sound and her penchant for rock began to color her voice and her writing. The CD was well received in the music industry despite Rounder’s reluctance to support the album as it veered too much from Sampou’s earlier album. John Black\, writing in Digital City said about the disc\, “Les Sampou’ is a remarkable CD full of the kind of songs you play over and over again. Listening to songs like ‘I Want You’ — and believe me I’ve listened to it enough to wear a groove in my CD — you can only wonder why Sampou isn’t in regular rotation on radio stations across the country. Sampou’s mature voice and intelligent heartfelt lyrics make the current flavors of the month on the radio sound like the lightweights they are.” \nSampou and Rounder parted ways and Les released her first all-acoustic\, country-blues album\, ‘BORROWED & BLUE’” on her own label\, MoNando Music. Always side-stepping categorization\, this time Sampou put out a collection of the guitar-based country-blues—original and classics—tunes that were a staple in Les’s live shows. Jay Miller\, Music Critic for The Patriot Ledger reviewed the album\, writing\, “Sampou’s guitar work is breathtaking–her six-string mentor Paul Rishell must be proud. Most notably her vocal work is thrilling\, adding layers of emotional depth to this eclectic mix of four Sampou originals\, old classics by the likes of Mississippi Fred McDowell and Blind Willie McTell and some surprises\, like Bob Dylan’s Meet Me in the Morning. An understated triumph.” \nBut\, it wasn’t until her album ‘LONESOMEVILLE\,’ that Sampou feels like she “hit her stride.” Pairing up with recording engineer Chris Rival\, Sampou and her all-star band of Boston’s cream of the crop session players (Kevin Barry/Guitars\, Mike Dinallo/Guitars\, Paul Kochanski/Bass\, Andy Plaisted/drums\, Jim Gambino/Keys\, Jimmy Ryan/Mandolin\, David Ogden and Mark Cunningham\, Vocals) recorded Lonesomeville live in two days. Ducky Carlisle\, mix engineer\, added his acclaimed rock edge to the Americana set of blues and soul-tinged country tunes. Lyrically\, Lonesomeville sums up what Sampou writes about best—love gone wrong\, hard goodbyes\, and honky tonk heartbreak.

DESCRIPTION:Showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\n\n\nAcclaimed singer-songwriter Cliff Eberhardt opens the Rose Garden’s 36th season on Saturday\, September 21\, at 7:30 p.m.   \n“Cliff is a songwriter\, storyteller\, and guitarist who has a poet’s heart and a gravelly voice that just draws you in\,” said Stephen Ide\, artistic director of the Rose Garden Coffeehouse. “We’re thrilled to have him back to open the season.”  \nClose on the heels of recent performances on the “On A Winter’s Night” tour\, Eberhardt is working on a new collection\, “Found Objects\,” an album of covers featuring arrangements of the songs of Leon Russell\, Tom Waits\, Cole Porter and more.  \nEberhardt knew from a young age that his destiny was in music. Growing up in Pennsylvania\, he was surrounded by a family that cherished music\, with his father introducing him to the guitar. His early exposure to legendary artists like James Taylor\, Joni Mitchell\, and Bruce Springsteen at the Main Point folk club shaped his musical journey.  \nBy 15\, Cliff and his brother Geoff were touring as an acoustic duo\, and by 21\, Cliff had moved to Illinois\, where he honed his craft in a vibrant music scene. His journey took him to New York in 1978\, where he immersed himself in the city’s rich musical landscape\, performing at iconic venues\, collaborating with artists like John Gorka\, Suzanne Vega and others\, singing advertising jingles\, and even working as a taxi driver to help make ends meet.  \nHis career took off with his debut album\, “The Long Road” in 1990\, which featured a duet with Richie Havens. Over the years\, he has released several albums and his songwriting prowess has earned him a place among the most respected songwriters in the folk scene\, with his songs covered by artists like Richie Havens and Shawn Colvin.  \nCliff also has made significant contributions to theater\, composing and performing original songs for productions like Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” and “The Heal\,” a modern re-telling of the Sophocles play\, “Philoctetes.”   \nCliff’s latest album\, “Knew Things\,” reached #4 on the Folk Alliance International’s Folk Radio Chart.  \nThe Rose Garden shows will be start at 7:30 p.m.\, with doors opening at 7. SUMMARY:Vance Gilbert & finals of Performing Songwriter Competition featuring James Lee Baker\, Chris LaVancher & Allison Rose
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: NEW earlier showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\n\n\nWe are so thrilled to have Vance Gilbert conclude our 35th season! \nWe are also pleased to announce that James Lee Baker (Colorado)\, Chris LaVancher (Massachusetts)\, and Allison Rose (Rhode Island) have been chosen as the finalists for the Rose Garden Coffeehouse’s 32nd Performing Songwriter Competition. Join us on May 18 to cheer them on as they perform their original songs before the evening’s featured act: Vance Gilbert. Best of luck to each the finalists! Tickets: https://tinyurl.com/rg24contest \nVance is a versatile and influential acoustic singer-songwriter\, performer\, and coach. He has released 14 albums and performed at prestigious festivals and venues\, and he’s performed at the Rose Garden probably a half-dozen times over the years. His latest album\, “The Mother Of Trouble”\, showcases his storytelling skills and diverse musical influences. Vance is the perfect musician to inspire our trio of songwriters participating that night in our 32nd Performing Songwriter Competition. \nAbout Vance\n“If Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens had a love child\, with Rodney Dangerfield as the midwife\, the results might be something close to the great Vance Gilbert”\, says Richmond Magazine. \nVance’s new album\, “The Mother Of Trouble”\, features Grammy winner Lori McKenna on background vocals\, Juno award recipient and Bonnie Raitt Grammy hit song co-writer Joey Landreth on guitars\, and Americana-Roots master mandolinist Joe K. Walsh. With 4 bullies\, 4 deaths (3 of them murders)\, 3 moms\, 2 accidents\, 2 Black people\, 2 dogs\, 1 dog ball\, 1 gay kid\, and 1 missed flight thanks to gas station sushi\, this album benefits from the gifts of time and experience honing songwriting skills that put this most vital of acoustic storytellers at the top of the game. \nOh\, and Management wants to make sure to tell you that this is the 14th release for this acoustic stalwart. \n30 years into his career\, the songwriter’s influence can be felt all over the contemporary Folk and Americana realm as he has helped pave the way for many of the BIPOC artists who have followed. \nVance was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. Starting out hoping to be an R&B and jazz singer once at college\, there he discovered his affinity for the storytelling sensibilities of the acoustic singer-songwriter thing. Word spread like wildfire about Gilbert’s stage-owning singing and playing\, and Shawn Colvin invited him to be special guest on her 1992 Fat City tour where he took much of America by storm and by surprise. “With the voice of an angel\, the wit of a devil\, and the guitar playing of a god..” wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. \nNoted not only for being the ever consummate performer\, Gilbert has recorded 13 albums\, including 5 for Philo/Rounder Records. Along with being opener of choice for artists as varied as Arlo Guthrie\, Anita Baker\, The Milk Carton Kids\, and Southside Johnny\, the mid 2000’s found Gilbert opening 150+ shows for comedian George Carlin. \nGilbert has also been a prominent presence at some of the world’s most prestigious gatherings and halls\, among them the Newport\, Winnipeg\, Rocky Mountain\, Calgary\, Ottawa\, and Falcon Ridge Folk festivals\, the Kate Wolf Music Festival\, and Australia’s Woodford Folk and Mullum Music Festivals\, Mountain Stage\, Boston’s Symphony Hall\, Nashville’s Lyman Auditorium\, The Barns at Wolftrap\, and a private party for his veterinarian where there was terrific lo-mein. \nMost recently he’s been the opener of choice for Mad About You/Stranger Things star Paul Reiser’s stand-up shows (50 +) for the last 7 years\, along with his own busy acoustic music touring and coaching schedule. That current schedule includes Vance’s Monday Night Acoustic Pajama Party on YouTube. Having started the first week of the pandemic in 2020\, Vance has played a live\, themed\, weekly 90 minute mixed bag of originals and cover tunes to a rotating following of about 200 folks. 10 to 20% of his weekly tip jar is donated to a local 501(c)3 of his choice. At the time of this writing\, having done 155 of these shows has become newsworthy in itself. \nGilbert has been a songwriting\, performance\, and voice coach all around the world\, kinda\, from Australia to Winnipeg\, at all the festivals above plus The Kerrville and Rocky Mountain Song Schools\, he is currently on staff as Instructor/Professor at the University Of Colorado Denver and has a decade worth of summer programs at the Berklee College Of Music under his belt. What? Private coaching? Yes\, 6-10 students weekly too. \nConsidered by many to be an integral part of the national folk scene\, his previous record “Good Good Man” features an eclectic roster of musical types including rocker Mike Posner\, world renown Celtic harpist Aine Minough\, bluesman Chris Smither\, and Al Green’s organist Stacey Wade. \nGilbert runs 3 to 4 miles ever so slowly 5 days a week to stay sharp for the road and does historical aviation research and model building just for great nerdy fun. \nHe even has a tune on a Grammy Nominated children’s album. How rounded is that?

SUMMARY:Mad Agnes
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: NEW earlier showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\n\n\nMad Agnes has won hearts on two continents with their signature intricate harmonies\, compelling songwriting\, and passionate delivery. The genre-bending trio — Margo Hennebach\, Adrienne Jones and Mark Saunders—creates an exciting\, inclusive performance\, delivering new original songs\, selections from their thirteen album catalog\, storytelling and impromptu vocal improv. \nIn their current iteration\, the trio primarily uses one microphone around which they form and re-form\, early-radio style. Their ease with one another on stage invites the audience into their world of human connection and spontaneous fun. Well-crafted instrumentation – using guitars\, mandolin\, ukulele\, piano\, melodica\, an inventive keyboard and three-part harmonies as tight as jeans from the dryer – enthralls audiences again and again.

SUMMARY:Erin Sullivan / Eric & Ash (a split bill)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: NEW earlier showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\nAsh & Eric\, a married duo from Worcester\, are known for their genuine storytelling through music. Their songs navigate the intricacies of love\, capturing both its triumphs and tribulations. Their album\, “Sure\,” touches on love’s dynamics\, offering both solace and reflection. Having been a team since 2012\, their knack for transforming life’s challenges into lyrical narratives stands out. Their beautiful harmonies\, acoustic guitar work\, and warm stage presence have led them to perform alongside folk stalwarts like Livingston Taylor and Mark Erelli. Their latest album\, “Sure\,” was entirely produced by Eric\, and they’re set to release a related film in 2023. \nErin Ash Sullivan\, also rooted in Massachusetts\, presents a nuanced take on folk music. Rose Garden attendees will remember her as the winner of our 2023 Performing Songwriter Competition. Originally one-half of the folk pair\, Edith O.\, with Amy Speace\, Erin took time away for personal commitments before making a resonant return. Her 2021 solo debut\, “We Can Hear Each Other\,” found success\, particularly her track “Fireflies.” Gaining attention within the folk community\, her accolades include the Mark Erelli Judge’s Choice Award. Erin’s artistry\, often described as both delicate and evocative\, evokes comparisons to established artists\, notably Dar Williams.
