We will welcome Allison Rose\, Christine Sweeney and Tammy LaForest to play for the evening.  Each performer will perform a solo set. The show is on Saturday\, March  22\, 2025 at 7 pm at the Music Mansion\, 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906. Tickets are $22\, and are available at the door or with reservation through our website.   \nParking at The Music Mansion at 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906 is limited and carpooling\, ride-sharing\, and mass transit are highly encouraged. There is also available parking on Benefit Street\, a short set of stairs will lead you right up to the Music Mansion. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS  \nAllison Rose in her own words: “I write pretty songs that make people cry. I’ve collected a few accolades like being a finalist in a few songwriting competitions and stuff. You can find me performing locally in RI as well as regionally and beyond (Rockwood Music Hall\, The MET\, Huntington Folk Festival\, Tucson Folk Festival\, to name a few). I am a multi-instrumentalist (piano\, guitar\, uke). I am a Mom of two crazy beautiful kids. I am a licensed mental health counselor. I am a photographer. I am a lucky human with an amazing family and tribe of friends and fans. I kickbox. I love the ocean and the f-word.”  \nAllison is in the process of working on and releasing a new\, full length album. Again\, in her own words\, she has said\, “We all have our definitions of success\, but to me\, nothing feels more successful than when I’m approached by an audience member after a show with\, “I loved [insert song title here]–it made me cry because [insert personal connection here].”  \nChristine Sweeney: How did stop-you-in-your-tracks vocalist and songwriter Christine Sweeney go from singing along with R&B radio and tapes by Whitney Houston\, Mariah Carey and Destiny’s Child as a kid to choice slots at the Connecticut Folk Festival and the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, WFUV’s DJ John Platts tastemaker On Your Radar concert series\, on bills with Graham Parker and Jill Sobule\, and in a Paste Magazine 2021 session? According to Christine\, “I had some cassettes and I would also record songs from the radio. I would play them over and over again\, focusing in on one small part of the song. Rewind\, play\, repeat.” To her the R&B vocal influence is not unnatural to the folk setting. The results of this influence reminds her fans of Susan Tedeschi\, Brandi Carlisle\, Sheryl Crow\, K.T. Tunstall\, or Grace Potter with music that grooves and rocks\, but also tells a story.  \nHer new album is “Heart in a Hurry” is a culmination of this pairing of folk and soul\, with generous dashes of blues\, pop\, Americana and\, yes\, R&B\, in sharp\, open-hearted new songs\, some drawn from life lessons learned the hard way and shared with her listeners. She will be sharing those songs from the Stone Soup stage this evening.  \nTammy LaForest: Born and raised in Rhode Island and currently residing in Providence\, Tammy is a singer\, songwriter and guitarist. She enjoys performing with her full band and as an acoustic soloist. She is also an avid blogger and vlogger\, using her humor and musical talents to entertain the masses. Don’t be surprised if you see her in your Facebook feed. Tammy does not have much of a bio online\, but she does have some great press:  “….In 2013 she was nominated as Best Female Vocalist and Breakthrough act in the Limelight Music Awards. DESCRIPTION:Showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Folk Collective\, normally at Club at Passim in Cambridge\, MA\, is an initiative focused on empowering diverse folk artists across New England by using music as a catalyst for community impact and social change. The Collective operates on a two-year\, cohort-based model\, specifically designed to address the unique challenges faced by underrepresented artists in the folk music scene. Through this model\, participants receive performance opportunities\, mentorship\, and collaborative space\, all aimed at helping them cultivate sustainable\, creative careers. \nThe Collective serves not only the artists themselves but also the wider New England community by broadening the reach of folk music and making it more accessible. Success for the Folk Collective is measured through various metrics\, including audience attendance\, diversity of participants\, engagement levels at events\, social media interactions\, and feedback from artists and the community. Partners supporting the initiative include institutions like Berklee College of Music\, the Cambridge Arts Council\, and the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation\, among others. \nARTISTS FOR THE MARCH 15 SHOW WILL INCLUDE: \nAlastair Moock is an award-winning singer-songwriter; a Grammy-nominated family musician; social justice and songwriting educator for all ages; and co-founder of The Opening Doors Project\, an anti-racist music organization. The Boston Globe calls him “one of the town’s best and most adventurous songwriters\,” and The Washington Post says\, “every song is a gem.” \nAnju is a singer\, songwriter\, producer\, and performer shaped by the people and places in Minnesota and Massachusetts. Their music conjures imaginary lovers\, scents of citrus\, and visions of hairy brown skin under the sun. Anju was highlighted by NPR’s All Songs Considered as an outstanding Tiny Desk Contest entrant. They are currently teaching young musicians piano\, violin\, and guitar and working on their debut full-length album. \nLydia “LovelySinger” Harrell is one of Boston’s musical treasures. Her sultry\, soulful voice and evocative songwriting have garnered her the attention and respect of the nation’s finest musicians and venues. Jazz and soul are where her heart is; however\, Harrell has shown an unbreakable ability to mold herself into any musical situation. Whether performing with the Boston Pops\, serenading NBA fans with America’s national anthem\, or lending her vocal talents to chart-topping deep house singles by British record label Reel People Music\, Harrell’s dedication to extracting the pure essence of the song is unmatched. In addition to her accomplishments as a musical artist\, Lydia is a film/TV\, voiceover\, and theatre actress. \nAward-winning multi-digital media artist\, musician\, organizer & filmmaker Cliff Notez’s art is a continuous exploration of the black mind. Rooted in hip-hop\, their art tackles the political and the personal\, exploring the intimate consequences of a society where black bodies are easily ignored\, forgotten\, or disregarded. In 2018 they took home Best New Artist at the Boston Music Awards\, and in 2020\, Cliff became the first musician to be named “Musician of the Year” for Boston Magazine’s 100 Most Influential Bostonians. Cliff’s Second full-length album\, Why The Wild Things Are\, was released on September 11th\, 2019. \nAward-winning Tlingit artist Kim Moberg was born in Juneau\, Alaska\, and currently calls Cape Cod\, MA home. Kim began playing guitar at age 14\, but severe stage fright kept her from becoming a professional performer. In 2014 Kim set out to overcome her stage fright and wrote her first song. Kim teamed with Grammy-nominated producer Jon Evans to record two albums: “Above Ground” and “Up Around The Bend.” Both have received worldwide airplay\, charting on the Folk Alliance International Folk DJ charts and the NACC Radio charts. Kim and Jon are collaborating on her third album\, which features songs that tie ancient prophecies to our current social environment. Kim’s recognitions include the 2021 Rocky Mountain Songwriting Contest Finalist\, the 2021 Great American Songwriting Contest Folk/Americana Finalist\, and the 2020 CT Folk Grassy Hill Songwriting Competition Winner.

DESCRIPTION:Avi Jacob is one of those performing artists who comes along once in a while\, whose sound is unique and new\, and you get the feeling that\, yes\, this one is going somewhere. Avi first performed at Stone Soup Coffeehouse opening for Allysen Callery in 2022. Since then he has been making a name for himself at venues all over New England\, as well as other places. This weekend\, Avi returns to the Stone Soup stage to not only sing many of his own songs\, but to also do a set of Bob Dylan classics. The show is on Saturday\, February 8\, 2025 at 7 pm at the Music Mansion\, 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906. Tickets are $22\, and are available at the door or with reservation through our website. Please appear at least 15 minutes before the performance begins\, or you will relinquish your tickets to those waiting to attend (unless it is prepaid).  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS  \nBorn & raised in New England\, Avi ran away from home in his teen years and ended up in Boston. Spending the next several years in & out of hospitals with a genetic disease\, Avi was mostly confined to his bedroom where he spent his time & energy creating songs. After recuperating\, Avi came out of the room and into the world with the ability to express his true and deepest feelings through song\, in a way most men are discouraged to do from birth. Moving to South Carolina\, Avi started making a name for himself playing music festivals\, being featured in dozens of music blogs & samplers. Over the last two years\, Avi has been balancing touring the country playing cafés\, clubs & theatres with farming\, truck driving\, & doing demolition.  \nAlmost all of Jacob’s tunes pack an emotional wallop\, and the five on Surrender\, due out this month\, are no exception. “These songs are extremely personal\, maybe a little too personal\,” Jacob laughs of the EP\, which he recorded with Simone Felice (who produced The Lumineers’ latest album) in a Catskills barn. “Some people go to therapists; I write songs.” Charleston: The City Magazine (2017)  \nAvi will be accompanied by his band for this performance. Band members are Ben Cosgrove on piano\, Brian Jablonski on pedal steel and Polly Bessette on harmony vocals. Ben is a traveling composer-performer whose music explores themes of landscape\, place\, and environment. Described by the Boston Globe as “a sonic plein-air painter… [using] his piano as a paintbrush\,” Brian is a local musician who is the epitome of the word ubiquitous\, appearing and supporting many of the local folk/singer-songwriter performers and bands in and around the state. Polly is a singer/songwriter from Warren Rhode Island with a passion for lyricism and folky tunes. Her music captures the ears of many through her raw and thoughtful recollections of universal growing pains in the sweetest of sounds.

DESCRIPTION:Showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\n\n\n\n\n\nLes Sampou (pronounced “Less Sampoo”) is an Americana singer-songwriter\, who got her start in the Boston folk scene and moved on to national prominence and acclaim. Sampou has performed at Montreal Jazz Festival\, SXSW\, Toronto Blues Festival\, Kerrville Folk Festival (where she won the New Folk Songwriting Award)\, Philadelphia Folk Festival\, Winnipeg\, and Falcon Ridge to name a few. Sampou has conducted workshops at Berklee School of Music and appeared on top syndicated radio programs such as Acoustic Cafe\, World Cafe\, and NPR. Sampou has released seven albums\, five on her own label and two on Rounder Records. Her album\, “Fall from Grace”\, topped the Gavin Americana Charts nationwide. Her release “Lonesomeville” charted number 2 on the US/European Americana F.A.R. Charts and led to her performance at the SXSW Conference in Austin\, TX. To date\, Sampou has released seven albums of original material (See Sales on Menu). In 2021\, Les won the 26th Annual International Songwriters Award for lyric writing for her song “LIES FROM TRUTH.” \nSampou\, who lives on the South Shore of Boston\, began playing in the streets in what she terms as “relatively late in life.” At twenty five\, when all her friends were getting married\, buying houses and planning for kids\, Sampou started playing guitar and writing\, hitting the pavement to Harvard Square\, the tunnels of the MBTA subway\, and anywhere she could open her case for coin and applause. It was there she found her voice and polished her guitar playing and wrote the first of her prolific collection of songs\, many of which you will find on this site organized by genre. \nAfter cutting her teeth in the streets\, Les began playing area clubs\, doing the 9 pm – 1 am shifts for little or no cash that she sums up as “paying her dues.” After a couple years of the club scene\, Sampou found the coffeehouse scene. She describes this period by saying\, “Being in front of a listening audience was nerve wracking; my hands would shake and my voice would seize up. But I was hooked.” Les worked her stage fright and didn’t stop writing. Her first album “SWEET PERFUME” caught the attention of legendary DJ Dick Pleasants and it soon was on the doorstep of Rounder Records where she was immediately signed. Rounder released “Fall From Grace” and it hit the top of the charts of Gavin Americana Radio. \nSampou’s third disc\, the eponymously-titled album “LES SAMPOU\,” was a departure from her folk and blues sound and her penchant for rock began to color her voice and her writing. The CD was well received in the music industry despite Rounder’s reluctance to support the album as it veered too much from Sampou’s earlier album. John Black\, writing in Digital City said about the disc\, “Les Sampou’ is a remarkable CD full of the kind of songs you play over and over again. Listening to songs like ‘I Want You’ — and believe me I’ve listened to it enough to wear a groove in my CD — you can only wonder why Sampou isn’t in regular rotation on radio stations across the country. Sampou’s mature voice and intelligent heartfelt lyrics make the current flavors of the month on the radio sound like the lightweights they are.” \nSampou and Rounder parted ways and Les released her first all-acoustic\, country-blues album\, ‘BORROWED & BLUE’” on her own label\, MoNando Music. Always side-stepping categorization\, this time Sampou put out a collection of the guitar-based country-blues—original and classics—tunes that were a staple in Les’s live shows. Jay Miller\, Music Critic for The Patriot Ledger reviewed the album\, writing\, “Sampou’s guitar work is breathtaking–her six-string mentor Paul Rishell must be proud. Most notably her vocal work is thrilling\, adding layers of emotional depth to this eclectic mix of four Sampou originals\, old classics by the likes of Mississippi Fred McDowell and Blind Willie McTell and some surprises\, like Bob Dylan’s Meet Me in the Morning. An understated triumph.” \nBut\, it wasn’t until her album ‘LONESOMEVILLE\,’ that Sampou feels like she “hit her stride.” Pairing up with recording engineer Chris Rival\, Sampou and her all-star band of Boston’s cream of the crop session players (Kevin Barry/Guitars\, Mike Dinallo/Guitars\, Paul Kochanski/Bass\, Andy Plaisted/drums\, Jim Gambino/Keys\, Jimmy Ryan/Mandolin\, David Ogden and Mark Cunningham\, Vocals) recorded Lonesomeville live in two days. Ducky Carlisle\, mix engineer\, added his acclaimed rock edge to the Americana set of blues and soul-tinged country tunes. Lyrically\, Lonesomeville sums up what Sampou writes about best—love gone wrong\, hard goodbyes\, and honky tonk heartbreak.

DESCRIPTION:Alastair Moock started performing in 1995\, moving from his home outside New York City to the folk haven of Boston\, Massachusetts. After working his way up through the local coffeehouse and club circuit\, he began touring the U.S. and Europe\, eventually graduating to renowned events like the Newport Folk Festival and Norway’s Bergen Music Fest and opening for national acts like Arlo Guthrie\, Taj Mahal\, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot\, Bill Morrissey\, and Greg Brown. Today\, he is an award-winning singer-songwriter; a Grammy-nominated family musician; a social justice and songwriting educator for all ages; and co-founder of The Opening Doors Project\, an anti-racist music organization. The Boston Globe calls him “one of the town’s best and most adventurous songwriters” and The Washington Post declares “every song a gem.”   Maxfield Anderson will be joining Alastair. They have been playing together and are part of Passim’s Folk Collective.  Maxfield plays mandolin\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar and writes some really nice tunes of his own!

Growing up in Pennsylvania\, he was surrounded by a family that cherished music\, with his father introducing him to the guitar. His early exposure to legendary artists like James Taylor\, Joni Mitchell\, and Bruce Springsteen at the Main Point folk club shaped his musical journey.  \nBy 15\, Cliff and his brother Geoff were touring as an acoustic duo\, and by 21\, Cliff had moved to Illinois\, where he honed his craft in a vibrant music scene. His journey took him to New York in 1978\, where he immersed himself in the city’s rich musical landscape\, performing at iconic venues\, collaborating with artists like John Gorka\, Suzanne Vega and others\, singing advertising jingles\, and even working as a taxi driver to help make ends meet.  \nHis career took off with his debut album\, “The Long Road” in 1990\, which featured a duet with Richie Havens. DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse (NRCC)\, in conjunction with the Friends of the Flint Memorial Library\, is proud to present the second of three outdoor Showcase concerts this summer in the Gazebo at Ipswich River Park on Saturday\, July 20 at 4 PM.  In the event of rain\, the event will take place in the Activity Room of the Flint Memorial Library at 147 Park Street in North Reading.  This event is sponsored by the Massachusetts Cultural Council – North Reading Chapter. \nThis Showcase concert will feature Betty and Andy DeYeso (“Bak-ta-Bak”)\, Joanna Katzen\, Al Pappalardo with Patrick Saylor (“Just Us”) and Art Grossman.  This concert will be followed by one more on Saturday\, August 17\, also at 4 PM.  There promises to be a mix of beautiful original tunes and covers of well-known artists.  All that needs to happen now is for the music lovers in North Reading and the surrounding communities to come to Ipswich River Park\, bring a chair\, a blanket or use the benches and tables provided at the park\, bring something to eat\, then simply relax and enjoy the music.  Again\, the concerts are free and there is plenty of parking.  For those of you who would like to see the concerts but cannot make it in person\, we will livestream them on the North Reading Community Coffeehouse Facebook page and then put it on the NRCC YouTube channel .  We look forward to seeing you there. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to Art Grossman at NRCoffeehouse@gmail.com.

DESCRIPTION:This will be a little different. Both Bill and Don are story tellers as well as musicians. There will  be more story telling than most shows.\nWe had such a good time last April even though it was cold and wet across the street\, we are doing it again.\n\nBill Harley is well-traveled\, well-read\, well-educated\, well-spoken and well-loved. Accompanied by his guitar\, his narrative songs and stories\, both original and traditional\, are a celebration of our common humanity. Best known for his work with children and families\, his ability to navigate through a confusing world with humor and wisdom is evident in his masterful storytelling as well as his numerous award-winning recordings and books. A two-time Grammy winner\, he is vibrant\, outrageous\, unpredictable and genuine with songs and stories about growing up\, schooling and what it is to be human—our connections with one another and with the planet we share. Recognized by audiences and peers as one of the finest performing storytellers in the country\, his work has influenced a generation of children\, parents\, performing artists and educators. Bill tours internationally as a performing artist\, author and keynote speaker from his home in Seekonk\, Massachusetts.\n\n\nDon White- There is no one-word description for what Don White does. He has survived and thrived for more than twenty years\, bringing his audiences to laughter and tears in his live performances\, studio recordings\, and on the printed page. He is a storyteller-comedian-author-troubadour-folk singer-songwriter. He is a walking challenge to the phrase “file under.” Best to just sort him under “Don White.”
