You can dress these songs up in inspired arrangements and intricate instrumentation but\, at their very essence\, the archetypal folk song is all about stories. Stories and people. Something such compelling songwriters as Eric Bogle\, Si Kahn\, Ewan MacColl\, and Stan Rogers … all understood and mined so effectively. \nJames Keelaghan\, too\, burrows into that same rich seam with equal ability and comparable conviction. To quote Eric Bibb\, the award-winning American acoustic bluesman\, after listening to Keelaghan perform: “[You’re] a joy to hear\, just beautiful.  Reminded me of the best of the best of another time – Liam Clancy\, Tom Paxton etcetera.” Less colourful but more succinct\, Dave Marsh\, the eminent Rolling Stone critic\, simply described Keelaghan as “Canada’s finest songwriter.” \nTruly\, throughout a career that now spans almost four decades\, the Juno and Canadian Folk Music Award winner has created a repertoire of incalculable importance – a unique body of work\, either inspired by or drawn from the folk tradition. Ten solo albums flush with enduring lyrical relevance. Take the beautiful but heartbreaking ballad\, Jenny Bryce\, for example. From any point of view\, it’s indistinguishable from the numerous traditional tracks covered on his disc A Few Simple Verses. \nWhat’s more\, various other originals from the Keelaghan cannon  must surely enter the domain of traditional folklore. Most notably\, Small Rebellions (highlighting the 1931 slaughter of peaceful striking miners in Bienfait\, SK); Hillcrest Mine (a prelude to the worst coal mining disaster in Canadian history); Kiri’s Piano (a triumph over adversity amidst the shameful\, racist treatment of Japanese-Canadians during WW II); Cold Missouri Waters (a harrowing portrait of the 1949 Mann Gulch Fire in the mountains of Montana) … \nA relentless musical spirit\, Keelaghan has surrounded himself with a variety of crackerjack companions down through the years that have largely included the late\, innovative\, free-spirited fiddler and composer\, Oliver Schroer\, the exuberant\, Chilean\, Latino-fusionist guitarist\, Oscar Lopez (with whom Keelaghan made two albums under the banner of Compadres)\, or the ubiquitous\, former Spirit of the West anchor and multi-instrumentalist\, Hugh MacMillan. Scrupulous audiences from Alberta to Australia bared witness to the sum of these resourceful parts. \nJames Keelaghan grew up in a bungalow in northwest Calgary\, AB\, with six siblings\, an Irish father\, and an English mum. His brother Bob would develop into a noteworthy guitarist with the excellent\, but now defunct\, Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir. From his father\, Jim\, James developed a love of history. The family record collection provided further inspiration. Traditional folk LPs by the likes of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem\, Séan Ó Riada\, and Harry Belafonte certainly caught young Keelaghan’s ear. He still cites Belafonte At Carnegie Hall as a recording that changed his life at age six! \nAppearing on over 250 recording projects\, bass player David Woodhead has worked with many influential artists including Perth County Conspiracy\, Stan Rogers\, Don Ross\, Oliver Schroer\, Loreena McKennitt\, Gil Scott-Heron\, Steve Rodby\, and David Sanborn. DESCRIPTION:Mike Laureanno hails from Fall River\, MA an old mill-town infamous for its axe wielding resident Lizzie Borden and famous for its chow mein sandwiches and pork pies.​A passionate performer\, Mike’s songs are visceral and evocative. He is proud of his roots and many of his songs deal with his gritty blue collar hometown and the lives of his family and friends. He is a winner of the 2017 Wildflower\, TX songwriting contest\, the 2016 Woody Guthrie songwriting contest and a 2016 Kerrville New Folk\, TX finalist. \nMike is also a skilled recording engineer\, producer and veteran sideman. He produced and recorded all of his albums in his home studio and he served twelve years as the bass player for the legendary New York City FAST FOLK Musical Magazine founder\, Jack Hardy. \n​Mike has released four albums to date\, Pushing Back Wintertime (2013)\, Road Signs (2015)\, Tightrope (2017) and I come from Fall River (2021) \nBristol-RI-based singer-songwriter Michelle Saylors was raised on a 30-acre farm in bible-belt Tennessee. Early musical inspirations include country\, bluegrass-gospel\, folk and Memphis blues. Michelle performed bluegrass music in the early 90s at festivals such as Lester Flat Bluegrass Festival and the Country Showdown. Michelle moved to New England in 1998 and landed in Rhode Island in 2009 where she became involved in the Rhode Island Songwriters Association. Michelle played at the Bluebird Café in Nashville at Songwriters open mics on several occasions. Michelle performed at the Providence Folk Festival in 2014 and the Rhode Island Folk Festival in 2022. \nIn July of 2024\, Michelle released her solo debut album titled “Hit the Creek” which features 10 original songs written solely by Michelle. The album has been well-received by fans and continues to gain momentum on streaming platforms nationally and recently hit the UK. Her songwriting is rooted both physically and metaphorically by the space and distance between small town Tennessee and coastal New England. Michelle is currently working on her second album. She identifies her musical style as Nashville blues-country/bluegrass/folk.

DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present its September\, 2025 Showcase. This is going to be a special show with a special start time of 5:30.  We are very excited to be welcoming all of the performers\, but especially our very good friend\, Iain Macdonald who has been a “virtual friend” of the North Reading Community Coffeehouse for a long time and is now coming from Scotland to perform live!  The other performers are The Fretbenders – Bob and Dee Kordas\, Mary Ann McAllister\, Ronnee Stolzberg and Art Grossman.  There might also be a surprise performer or two.  We have a group of very talented musicians this month with a nice variety of music which will make for a very entertaining show.  Each performer will do about a 30 minute set.The event is free but donations will be gratefully accepted and we will be offering refreshments with all the proceeds going to the Friends of the Flint Memorial Library in North Reading with whom we will be doing these concerts in conjunction with\, to help support the library.\n\nThe event will also be livestreamed on the North Reading Community Coffeehouse Facebook page and on the YouTube channel the following day! \nWe are located in the Activity Room of the Flint Memorial Library at 147 Park Street in North Reading.  There is plenty of free parking.  And as mentioned\, we will start at 5:30.  Please come\, sit back\, relax and listen to some terrific music!  If you have any questions\, please contact Art Grossman at NRCoffeehouse@gmail.com.\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present an evening with the Cataldo and Clark Quartet on Saturday\, September 12 at 7:30 PM (doors open at 7 PM).  The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is located in the Activity Room at the Flint Memorial Library\, 147 Park St\, North Reading\, MA. There is a suggested donation of $10 and seats can be reserved by emailing Nrcoffeehouse@gmail.com.  A portion of the money raised will go to the Friends of the Flint Memorial Library to help support the many programs and activities offered by the Library. \nThe Cataldo & Clark Quartet was formed in 2020 as an acoustic duo of Michael Cataldo and Scotty Ray Clark\, performing original songs written by lead singer Michael Cataldo. Their repertoire also includes soulful interpretations by artists ranging from Ray Charles\, Marvin Gaye\, Leon Russell\, Bonnie Raitt\, and Bob Dylan. Whether performing solo or with Americana darlings Red Molly\, her tales of love and loss\, both gritty and sweet\, are propelled by her impeccable slide guitar chops.\n\nAs an award-winning songwriter\, captivating vocalist\, and a world-class lap style dobro player\, she has an unmistakable sound all her own. This is masterfully captured on her 2022 CD “DobroSinger.” The record made it to #11 on the Billboard Blues Charts and #2 on the Folk DJ Charts\, receiving rave reviews in Bluegrass Unlimited\, Acoustic Guitar Magazine and American Songwriter. It’s a raw intimate recording full of blues\, ballads and the ache of the unknown. There is a dark cave inside each of us\, and monsters of all kinds lurk there\, all the more lethal for being hidden. The quest is to journey inside\, render the monsters powerless\, find whatever it is that burns at the core of your soul and bring it back into the light. In a world divided it is critical to write songs and tell stories that show absolutely everyone they get to be the hero. DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present its April\, 2025 Showcase. We will welcome Allison Rose\, Christine Sweeney and Tammy LaForest to play for the evening.  Each performer will perform a solo set. The show is on Saturday\, March  22\, 2025 at 7 pm at the Music Mansion\, 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906. Tickets are $22\, and are available at the door or with reservation through our website.   \nParking at The Music Mansion at 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906 is limited and carpooling\, ride-sharing\, and mass transit are highly encouraged. There is also available parking on Benefit Street\, a short set of stairs will lead you right up to the Music Mansion. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS  \nAllison Rose in her own words: “I write pretty songs that make people cry. I’ve collected a few accolades like being a finalist in a few songwriting competitions and stuff. You can find me performing locally in RI as well as regionally and beyond (Rockwood Music Hall\, The MET\, Huntington Folk Festival\, Tucson Folk Festival\, to name a few). I am a multi-instrumentalist (piano\, guitar\, uke). I am a Mom of two crazy beautiful kids. I am a licensed mental health counselor. I am a photographer. I am a lucky human with an amazing family and tribe of friends and fans. I kickbox. I love the ocean and the f-word.”  \nAllison is in the process of working on and releasing a new\, full length album. Again\, in her own words\, she has said\, “We all have our definitions of success\, but to me\, nothing feels more successful than when I’m approached by an audience member after a show with\, “I loved [insert song title here]–it made me cry because [insert personal connection here].”  \nChristine Sweeney: How did stop-you-in-your-tracks vocalist and songwriter Christine Sweeney go from singing along with R&B radio and tapes by Whitney Houston\, Mariah Carey and Destiny’s Child as a kid to choice slots at the Connecticut Folk Festival and the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, WFUV’s DJ John Platts tastemaker On Your Radar concert series\, on bills with Graham Parker and Jill Sobule\, and in a Paste Magazine 2021 session? According to Christine\, “I had some cassettes and I would also record songs from the radio. I would play them over and over again\, focusing in on one small part of the song. Rewind\, play\, repeat.” To her the R&B vocal influence is not unnatural to the folk setting. The results of this influence reminds her fans of Susan Tedeschi\, Brandi Carlisle\, Sheryl Crow\, K.T. Tunstall\, or Grace Potter with music that grooves and rocks\, but also tells a story.  \nHer new album is “Heart in a Hurry” is a culmination of this pairing of folk and soul\, with generous dashes of blues\, pop\, Americana and\, yes\, R&B\, in sharp\, open-hearted new songs\, some drawn from life lessons learned the hard way and shared with her listeners. She will be sharing those songs from the Stone Soup stage this evening.  \nTammy LaForest: Born and raised in Rhode Island and currently residing in Providence\, Tammy is a singer\, songwriter and guitarist. She enjoys performing with her full band and as an acoustic soloist. She is also an avid blogger and vlogger\, using her humor and musical talents to entertain the masses. Don’t be surprised if you see her in your Facebook feed. Tammy does not have much of a bio online\, but she does have some great press:  “….In 2013 she was nominated as Best Female Vocalist and Breakthrough act in the Limelight Music Awards. The Collective operates on a two-year\, cohort-based model\, specifically designed to address the unique challenges faced by underrepresented artists in the folk music scene. Through this model\, participants receive performance opportunities\, mentorship\, and collaborative space\, all aimed at helping them cultivate sustainable\, creative careers. \nThe Collective serves not only the artists themselves but also the wider New England community by broadening the reach of folk music and making it more accessible. Success for the Folk Collective is measured through various metrics\, including audience attendance\, diversity of participants\, engagement levels at events\, social media interactions\, and feedback from artists and the community. Partners supporting the initiative include institutions like Berklee College of Music\, the Cambridge Arts Council\, and the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation\, among others. \nARTISTS FOR THE MARCH 15 SHOW WILL INCLUDE: \nAlastair Moock is an award-winning singer-songwriter; a Grammy-nominated family musician; social justice and songwriting educator for all ages; and co-founder of The Opening Doors Project\, an anti-racist music organization. The Boston Globe calls him “one of the town’s best and most adventurous songwriters\,” and The Washington Post says\, “every song is a gem.” \nAnju is a singer\, songwriter\, producer\, and performer shaped by the people and places in Minnesota and Massachusetts. Their music conjures imaginary lovers\, scents of citrus\, and visions of hairy brown skin under the sun. Anju was highlighted by NPR’s All Songs Considered as an outstanding Tiny Desk Contest entrant. They are currently teaching young musicians piano\, violin\, and guitar and working on their debut full-length album. \nLydia “LovelySinger” Harrell is one of Boston’s musical treasures. Her sultry\, soulful voice and evocative songwriting have garnered her the attention and respect of the nation’s finest musicians and venues. Jazz and soul are where her heart is; however\, Harrell has shown an unbreakable ability to mold herself into any musical situation. Whether performing with the Boston Pops\, serenading NBA fans with America’s national anthem\, or lending her vocal talents to chart-topping deep house singles by British record label Reel People Music\, Harrell’s dedication to extracting the pure essence of the song is unmatched. In addition to her accomplishments as a musical artist\, Lydia is a film/TV\, voiceover\, and theatre actress. \nAward-winning multi-digital media artist\, musician\, organizer & filmmaker Cliff Notez’s art is a continuous exploration of the black mind. Rooted in hip-hop\, their art tackles the political and the personal\, exploring the intimate consequences of a society where black bodies are easily ignored\, forgotten\, or disregarded. In 2018 they took home Best New Artist at the Boston Music Awards\, and in 2020\, Cliff became the first musician to be named “Musician of the Year” for Boston Magazine’s 100 Most Influential Bostonians. Cliff’s Second full-length album\, Why The Wild Things Are\, was released on September 11th\, 2019. \nAward-winning Tlingit artist Kim Moberg was born in Juneau\, Alaska\, and currently calls Cape Cod\, MA home. Kim began playing guitar at age 14\, but severe stage fright kept her from becoming a professional performer. In 2014 Kim set out to overcome her stage fright and wrote her first song. Kim teamed with Grammy-nominated producer Jon Evans to record two albums: “Above Ground” and “Up Around The Bend.” Both have received worldwide airplay\, charting on the Folk Alliance International Folk DJ charts and the NACC Radio charts. Kim and Jon are collaborating on her third album\, which features songs that tie ancient prophecies to our current social environment. Kim’s recognitions include the 2021 Rocky Mountain Songwriting Contest Finalist\, the 2021 Great American Songwriting Contest Folk/Americana Finalist\, and the 2020 CT Folk Grassy Hill Songwriting Competition Winner.
