SUMMARY:Atwater-Donnelly Band - January 21\, 8 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:“To those who…deny the human spirit\, I give you these chroniclers of its joys and sorrows\, light and dark\, hope and despair and say that they have but liberated what is in us all. Their dancing notes say\, ‘Here it is! Humanity’s real self. Look! Isn’t it wondrous?”— From a poem written about Aubrey and Elwood\, “The Folk Singers” by Philip R. Pearson\, Jr. in his book Poetry is to be Consumed\, Vantage Press\, New York \n“I almost fainted when you sang and danced and played the banjo at the same time! My mouth was droped (sic) open the entire time.”— 4th graders\, Chaplin Elementary School\, Chaplin\, CT \nThe Atwater-Donnelly Band performs a unique and thrilling blend of traditional American and Celtic folk music and percussive dance. Elwood Donnelly\, Aubrey Atwater\, Cathy Clasper-Torch\, and Erin Lobb Mason blend beautiful vocals and play guitar\, mountain dulcimer\, banjo\, fiddle\, cello\, bass\, whistle\, harmonica\, limberjacks\, and other surprises including freestyle Appalachian clogging and French Canadian footwork. \nThe performance is appealing to all ages and with a relaxed stage presence\, Aubrey\, Elwood\, Cathy\, and Erin explain song\, instrument\, and dance origins to give more relevance to the material. Separately and together\, these performers have received numerous accolades and have produced many recordings and books which will be available at the performance.

The suggested contribution is $20\, payable by cash\, check\, or Venmo at the door. Send an email to whalecoveproductions@gmail.com for information about how to attend. \nClaudia Nygaard is a mesmerizing storyteller and a cinematic lyricist who writes songs that are heartfelt\, humorous\, scrappy\, and sensual\, And she does so with a daredevil’s vulnerability and a complete lack of self-censorship. Nygaard\, with her powerful\, resonant\, and deeply emotive amber honey voice\, is a master at putting a tear in your eye with a song that breaks your heart\, and then with a quick wit and an outlandish sense of humor\, she’ll replace it with tears of laughter. \nBuilding on the craft she learned while a staff songwriter on Nashville’s Music Row\, she has won numerous awards including the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival Songwriting Competition\, and with the title cut of her latest album “Lucky Girl”\, the Tumbleweed Music Festival Songwriting Competition. “Lucky Girl” charted at #3 on the Folk Alliance Radio song chart and #5 on the album chart\, and gave her a significant debut on the Americana chart. It also received impressive reviews from the press. Legendary folk music magazine “Sing Out” claimed the songs “rival the likes of Guy Clark or Ian Tyson”.

SUMMARY:Paul Rishell and Annie Raines\, April 22\,2023
DESCRIPTION:For 29 years Paul Rishell & Annie Raines have been hailed as one of the world’s best blues duos. They have recorded 6 albums together including the W.C. Handy Award-winning Moving to the Country (2000)\, and received numerous award nominations from the Blues Foundation. They have performed and recorded with John Sebastian\, Susan Tedeschi\, Pinetop Perkins and Rory Block. They have opened for Ray Charles\, Dr. John\, and Little Feat\, and performed on international radio and TV shows including Late Night with Conan O’Brien and A Prairie Home Companion. They continue to perform American roots music and their own compositions at festivals\, concert halls\, and clubs all over the world. As a working team\, Paul and Annie have racked up hundreds of thousands of miles on the road in the U.S. and Europe\, collaborated on original songs\, and released the Blues Foundation Award nominated TALKING GUITAR \, I WANT YOU TO KNOW (Tone-Cool/Artemis 1996)\, MOVING TO THE COUNTRY (2000)\, the W.C. Handy Award winner for Acoustic Blues Album of the Year\, and GOIN’ HOME (2004)\, which was nominated for two Handy Awards. \nPaul Rishell and Annie Raines’s sixth project together\, TALKING GUITAR was released in 2012 and received 2 Nominations for the Blues Foundation’s Blues Music Awards. It features Paul returning to the bare essence of country blues\, with stunning solo performances of gems by Lead Belly\, Blind Boy Fuller\, Skip James and others\, with Annie joining in on a few tunes. It is stark\, stripped down and intimate. Their previous album\, the live recording “A NIGHT IN WOODSTOCK” was released in 2008 as a CD and in 2009 as a DVD on their own Mojo Rodeo label\, and distributed internationally by Burnside Distribution\, each release earning multiple Blues Music Award nominations. The live concert features special guests John Sebastian\, Bruce Katz\, and Paul and Annie’s own backing band joining the duo for an eclectic\, high-energy set of acoustic and electric originals and classic blues songs. The DVD includes extra features such as artist biographies\, video guitar lessons and audio commentary by Rishell\, Raines and Sebastian. \n  \nPaul and Annie are equally passionate about their craft and devoted to the study and performance of a wide range of blues styles\, from the syncopated acoustic guitar wizardry of Blind Lemon Jefferson and Son House to Chicagoan “Little” Walter Jacob’s swinging amplified harmonica. Paul has reached what Boston Phoenix writer Ted Drozdowski called “a place deep and resonant as Robert Johnson’s crossroads\, where authenticity\, soul\, and a sense of purpose and commitment ring out in every note he sings and plays.” Annie has added vocals\, mandolin\, piano\, and other instruments to her musical arsenal\, while being recognized by top professionals and fans worldwide as the “queen of the blues harmonica.” Says blues legend Pinetop Perkins\, “She plays so good it hurts!” \nTouring internationally at festivals\, clubs\, and concert halls\, and teaching workshops and seminars\, Paul Rishell & Annie Raines have earned loyal fans around the globe. Paul and Annie are featured in the new jug band music documentary\, Chasin’ Gus’ Ghost\, which debuted at the San Francisco Film Festival in August 2007. They have performed on diverse radio and TV shows including A Prairie Home Companion\, Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, and PBS’s Arthur. They have performed and recorded with Susan Tedeschi\, John Sebastian\, Pinetop Perkins\, and Rory Block. Susan Tedeschi recorded an “unplugged” version of Paul’s Blues on a Holiday with Paul and Annie for her 2003 release\, Wait For Me. \nAnnie Raines was born in 1969 in Boston and grew up in the suburb of Newton\, Massachusetts. She picked up the blues harp at 17 and made her stage debut at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge a few months before her high school graduation. Enthralled by the recordings of Muddy Waters\, Little Walter Jacobs\, Big Walter Horton and Sonny Boy Williamson\, she became a fixture at Boston area blues jams. She briefly attended Antioch College and 1988 interned with Washington\, DC homeless rights activist Mitch Snyder\, who persuaded her to drop out of school to pursue her musical career. One of the few female blues harmonica players in the country\, Annie played the New England club circuit with local bands\, and traveled to Chicago where she met and played with many of her musical idols including Pinetop Perkins\, Louis Myers\, and James Cotton. She also enjoyed yearlong stints with the Tarbox Ramblers and the Susan Tedeschi Band\, going on to perform on Susan’s first three albums. She lives in Boston with her number one musical hero\, Paul Rishell. \nPaul Rishell was born in Brooklyn\, New York in 1950\, descended from a long line of Methodist preachers and Norwegian painters. At the age of ten\, he discovered that he could keep time on the drums\, though his feet didn’t reach the pedals. He started a band a few years later\, playing surf music and rock ‘n roll\, until a friend turned him on to the country blues records of Son House\, Robert Johnson\, Charley Patton\, and Blind Lemon Jefferson. He immediately took up the guitar and in the early 70’s Paul moved to Cambridge\, Massachusetts and had the chance to play with many of the first and second generation of blues masters — including Son House\, Johnny Shines\, Sonny Terry\, Brownie McGhee\, and Howlin’ Wolf. Paul Rishell’s debut recording\, BLUES ON A HOLIDAY (Tone-Cool) was released in 1990 to resounding critical acclaim. The album was half acoustic\, half electric\, and established Paul as a masterful\, versatile blues player and as well as a deeply soulful singer and songwriter. He followed that with SWEAR TO TELL THE TRUTH in 1993\, which featured heart-stopping solo performances as well as guest artists Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters and “Little”Annie Raines. Paul’s original music has been used in plays\, films\, and countless television shows including Friends\, Oprah\, and A&E’s Biography. He has built up a stellar reputation over 40 years as a performer\, teacher\, and torchbearer of the country blues tradition. His former students include Susan Tedeschi and Michael Tarbox. Dirt Road Blues\, Paul’s instructional video/CD-Rom for Truefire.com\, was released in 2008 with detailed demonstrations and transcriptions of his original songs and songs by Scrapper Blackwell\, Blind Boy Fuller\, and many others. He is currently serving as a visiting artist at Berklee College of Music in Boston. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebookTwitterShare\n\n

SUMMARY:Wide Open Spaces & Performing Songwriter Competition\, May 13\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Wide Open Spaces plays “bluegrass without borders”\, using bluegrass instrumentation to play a wide range of music\, with genres from the Kentucky hills to Celtic and Caribbean isles with overtones of Alison Krauss\, Claire Lynch\, Kate Wolf\, Bill Monroe\, Newgrass Revival and the Beatles. \nFEATURING: \nPeter Anick – Vocals\, Mandolin and Fiddle\nMatt Carlen – Guitar\, Vocals\nMarie (Mud) Rocheleau-Demers – Vocals\, Guitar\nJeffrey Horton (Mansfield’s own!)– Bass\, Vocals\nPaul Wolf – Drums\, Percussion \nCombining the traditional sounds of fiddle\, banjo\, mandolin\, guitar and bass with modern song writing\, jazzy rock-edged arrangements and tight three-part harmonies\, they take audiences on a musical joy ride that has some people saying: “I can’t believe that’s bluegrass!” Anything can happen – and usually does. \nThe band’s debut CD is entitled “Fiddletown”\, drawing the name from the Pete Anick original that starts the compilation of 14 songs\, 13 of which are original Wide Open Spaces’ compositions. \nThe ‘Spaces’ are comprised of former members of the newgrass stew pot known as Acoustic Planet\, the bluegrass wunderkinds The Fogg Brothers\, Marie of the famed acoustic folk duo\, Chuck and Mud\, and our most recent acquisition\, RI Bluegrass Hall of Famer Jeff Horton\, who brings 40 years of bluegrass experience as an alumni of Northern Lights and the infamous Neon Valley Boys. \nWhether you prefer beautiful Celtic fiddle reels\, rockin’ guitar solos\, Beatle-esque and Alison Krauss style harmonies – or original songs sometimes reminiscent of Jimmy Buffet\, Dave Brubeck\, and Doyle Lawson – come join the Spaces for an evening of good-humored musical alchemy.

SUMMARY:The Kennedys
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: NEW earlier showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\nTwo of our favorites return! At well over a million miles of roadwork\, including two stints as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, Pete and Maura Kennedy show no signs of slowing down either on tour or in the creative realm. \nSongwriting duo Pete and Maura Kennedy make a strong return to the studio and stage after three years of weekly live-streamed lockdown-era concerts. They took the opportunity to explore classic songwriting in depth\, performing over a thousand songs during the pandemic. That vast overview strengthened and refined their own writing and laid the foundation for this new collection of original\, socially-conscious songs. \n“After such a deep dive into American roots music\, we felt like we had a new set of writing tools. We were ready to create this body of work\, and there’s just SO much to write about\,” says Maura. “During our five-year hiatus from writing and recording\, America changed in massive ways\, divisive ways that have shaken our whole foundation. That has to be addressed by creative artists\, those of us who have a voice to speak for others. Our love of the great things about this country\, things that are under threat\, is the reason we decided to make “Headwinds” the title track of the CD. Political and social headwinds are making it hard to get back “home’ to our greatness as a nation. We want to push back in a positive way against those winds.” \nIn addition to singing and writing\, Pete and Maura are multi-instrumentalists. The thirteen songs are cast in a soundscape that draws from the classic canon of American roots\, in keeping with the theme of getting back “home” as a nation. Acoustic and electric guitars\, a vintage steel guitar\, a gospel-inflected piano/organ mix\, and even a slide ukulele all add colors to a songbag of sounds that have drawn us together during hard times. Pete and Maura believe that those sounds still have the power to pull us through again. \nThe Kennedys began their writing and touring life three decades ago as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, developing their own sound as a frequent support act on Nanci’s tours across America\, Ireland\, Scotland and England. Collaborations with Nanci continued\, culminating in Pete and Maura producing her final album\, “Intersections.” Along the way\, they hosted a nationwide radio program\, “The Dharma Cafe” on Sirius/XM\, wrote and released sixteen CDs of original music\, and have been core artists on folk radio\, expanding their audience further with the inception of the AAA and Americana formats.

SUMMARY:First Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse Presents the Ruth and Ben String Band on 1/26!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Folk Coffeehouse at First Church Dedham\n670 High Street\, Dedham\, MA\n(781) 326-7463 \nContact: Geoff Tegnell \nFirst Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its fourth concert of the 2023-2024 season featuring the Ruth and Ben String Band at First Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, January 26\, 2024 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $15 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe Ruth and Ben String Band plays electrifying old-time Appalachian music. Led by guitarist Ruth Rappaport and her fiddler son\, Ben Wetherbee\, the band’s repertoire includes rousing fiddle tunes and traditional\, modern\, and original songs that feature tight harmony singing. They are joined by clawhammer banjo player Joel Wennerstrom and upright bass player Michael Siegel. As a multi-generational four-piece band\, their musical influences are far reaching and include many genres–from Irish fiddle tunes and early country to punk. Ruth brings years of experience as a principal member of the ‘80’s and ’90’s all-woman old-time band from Boston\, “The Poodles\,” touring Europe and the US.  Her son Ben is following in Ruth’s footsteps with his musically diverse fiddle playing\, which has garnered much attention through his many performances in the area. Joel’s rhythmic and melodic banjo playing can be heard on recordings alongside members of the Punch Brothers and various Appalachian fiddle contest winners. You can find Michael playing in numerous Americana\, Bluegrass\, and old-time groups\, including Rachel Sumner’s “Traveling Light” band.  Together they make a highly entertaining quartet.  Hold onto your hats! This will be a lively show! Ruth and Ben have recently released new album\, “Newfangled Folk” and look forward to playing selections from the album at the show. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and the Concerts at First Church Saturday classical concert series\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events.

SUMMARY:Mike Agranoff House Concert
DESCRIPTION:Roslindale\, MA (Address will be provided when you make your reservation.) \nReservations are required: send email to HouseConcerts@fssgb.org. $20 at the door (cash) – $5 for students. \nIf you’ve been around the folk scene\, you couldn’t miss seeing Mike. Tall\, ginger beard\, and always around where the music is. He’s been on the scene for many many years\, listening to the fine details of what makes this genre of music so special to the soul\, so able to make us laugh and cry and think. And lucky for us all\, he got serious about having fun at it. \nLess a singer-songwriter than a singer-songfinder\, Mike takes great delight in discovering the little-known hidden gems\, polishing them with his own distinctive style\, and bringing them to the light of day where they sparkle. He will shift from beautifully contemplative\, to uproariously funny\, to instrumentally brilliant\, to powerfully emotional in the space of a few minutes. Equally at home in the contemporary and traditional camps of the Folk world\, he is a fine musician and storyteller. His prime instrument is the guitar\, upon which he shines with intricate fingerstyle arrangements of anything from Tin Pan Alley tunes of the ’20s to fiddle tunes to his own music. He also plays concertina\, piano\, banjo\, or sings acapella. The man will capture your attention\, and then your heart. \nNot only a performer\, Mike is involved in presenting folk music as well. He is one of the prime movers of The Folk Project\, New Jersey’s oldest and strongest folk music organization. For over two decades he has been chairman of that organization’s Minstrel Coffeehouse\, one of the longest lived and most respected folk venues in the country. \nCheck the website\, www.fssgb.org\, or email info@fssgb.org\, if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse Performing Artist Series Presents Don White
DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present Don White.  Don is equal parts storyteller-comedian-author-troubadour-folk singer-songwriter\, and has been bringing audiences to laughter and tears for 30 years. White’s arc as an award-winning songwriter and performer has taken him from his industrial hometown of Lynn\, MA across the country as hitchhiker\, through Boston’s comedy clubs and coffeehouses\, and onto the stage with greats like Arlo Guthrie\, Taj Mahal\, Ritchie Havens\, Patty Larkin\, Bill Morrissey\, Tom Rush\, Louden Wainwright III\, and Christine Lavin\, with whom he toured for 8 years all across North America in a co-bill called The Funny Side of the Street. At every point\, White has been the ultimate observer\, infusing his work with his experiences as a husband\, a father\, a seeker\, and a joker. In 2011\, he won the Jerry Christen Memorial Award\, given out by Boston Area Coffeehouse Association\, for his work with the community. There is a $20 suggested donation.  Doors open at 6:30.  Please come and join us for a great evening of music and storytelling.  We are located in the Activity Room of the Flint Memorial Library at 147 Park Street in North Reading\, MA.  There is plenty of free parking.  If you would like to reserve a seat\, please contact Art Grossman at NRCoffeehouse@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Erin Sullivan / Eric & Ash (a split bill)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: NEW earlier showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\nAsh & Eric\, a married duo from Worcester\, are known for their genuine storytelling through music. Their songs navigate the intricacies of love\, capturing both its triumphs and tribulations. Their album\, “Sure\,” touches on love’s dynamics\, offering both solace and reflection. Having been a team since 2012\, their knack for transforming life’s challenges into lyrical narratives stands out. Their beautiful harmonies\, acoustic guitar work\, and warm stage presence have led them to perform alongside folk stalwarts like Livingston Taylor and Mark Erelli. Their latest album\, “Sure\,” was entirely produced by Eric\, and they’re set to release a related film in 2023. \nErin Ash Sullivan\, also rooted in Massachusetts\, presents a nuanced take on folk music. Rose Garden attendees will remember her as the winner of our 2023 Performing Songwriter Competition. Originally one-half of the folk pair\, Edith O.\, with Amy Speace\, Erin took time away for personal commitments before making a resonant return. Her 2021 solo debut\, “We Can Hear Each Other\,” found success\, particularly her track “Fireflies.” Gaining attention within the folk community\, her accolades include the Mark Erelli Judge’s Choice Award. Erin’s artistry\, often described as both delicate and evocative\, evokes comparisons to established artists\, notably Dar Williams.

SUMMARY:Antje Duvekot returns to Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Antje returns to the Harmony on the Green stage after accompanying Catie Curtis at her show here back in May. The audience was delighted by her beautiful harmonies on Catie’s songs\, as well as her sharing a few of her own songs with us. We are thrilled to welcome her back! \nAntje has won some of the top songwriting awards including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and in one of the nation’s top music markets\, she won the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. Two of her albums found her working with Richard Shindell as producer\, as well as other “folk royalty” such as John Gorka\, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli. \nAntje has extensive touring experience\, criss-crossing the US and Europe many times. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined festivals in Scotland and Denmark. \nThe Bank of America featured Antje’s song “Merry Go Round” in a national TV advertising campaign\, including a Super Bowl audience. Neil Dorfsman\, producer for Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen and Sting says\, “When I first heard Antje I knew I was witnessing something very special. She creates an entire\, detailed world in verse\, and takes you there with beautiful and understated melody. Her songs are stunning paintings of color and shade and always generate the heat and light that real art should. In an unpoetic and ‘in your face’ world\, she is lyrical and subtle” \nAntje has played the TEDMED conference in San Diego. CNN said of the experience\, “Then\, this morning\, the tone of the conference turned from intellectual to deeply emotional when Antje Duvekot played her guitar and sang about her grandmother’s descent into Alzheimer’s disease. Duvekot’s song was all too relatable for those of us who have watched loved ones slip away. ‘And Anna tries to form a thought / But at the end she’s forgotten where she started from / There’s something she would like to say / But the words in her head seem to have got away’ she sang.” \nAntje’s most recent album\, New Wild West was released in September\, 2023. \nOpening for Antje will be Eva Gertz. Eva is an eclectic artist of many mediums\, born and raised in Melrose\, MA where she started piano lessons at a young age. After attending Berklee College of Music (class of 2015)\, she spent six years developing her multi-faceted music career in NYC. This led her to arrange for Broadway and assist top-rank composers\, perform as a dueling pianist on cruise ships\, and self produce her original singer-songwriter releases along with ultra-creative music videos which share an uplifting message of self-love. \nShe currently lives in Somerville and teaches arranging at Berklee among many other musical jobs and projects. Her appreciation for the local arts community that has supported her from the beginning continues to grow immensely. You can learn more about her at her website https://www.evagertz.com/\nTickets available at https://hancockchurch.breezechms.com/form/17550915758430471852 \nHarmony on the Green at Hancock United Church of Christ\, is an accessible venue with parking along Mass. Avenue\, as well as in our back parking lot. \nFrom our front entrance\, there is an elevator to bring you to Clark Hall.
