DESCRIPTION:Reservations are required: send email to HouseConcerts@fssgb.org.  Address (in Newton) will be provided when you make your reservation.  $20 at the door (cash) – $5 for students. \nSteve Turner is known as a pioneer of highly sophisticated English concertina song accompaniments\, stretching the boundaries of traditional forms\, with one of the best voices in the business. He is a multi-instrumentalist\, who also accompanies himself on the cittern\, and also plays mandolin and tenor banjo. \nSteve began his career on the Manchester\, UK folk scene at the end of the ‘60s\, with the Geordie band “Canny Fettle”\, touring with them for eight years and making two albums with them. \nIn 1979 he won the UK Melody Maker’s national “Stars of the 80s” competition\, which persuaded him to turn professional\, and for the next 12 years he toured solo\, nationally and internationally\, releasing four albums with Fellside Records during this period (Out Stack\, Jigging One Now\, Eclogue and Braiding). \nAfter 13 years away from the folk scene he made a welcome return in 2004 performing in folk clubs and festivals\, and in 2008 producing his 5th album\, the highly acclaimed “Whirligig of Time” which featured UK luminaries Martin Carthy\, Nancy Kerr and Miranda Sykes. \nSince then he has released further albums\, “Rim of the Wheel” \, “Spirit of the Game” and “Late Cut”\, and his latest much anticipated 9th album “Curious Times” featuring Martin Carthy will be released in Spring 2023. \nCheck the website\, www.fssgb.org\, or email info@fssgb.org\, if you have any questions.

We’re back! \nNow that it is ‘fall-ish’ another music event is planned for our 45th season at the South Shore Folk Music Club (SSFMC).\nThe first Coffeehouse is Fri Sep 22 2023\nDoors open at 630p\nShow starts at 7p\, goes till 915p\nFirst Parish Duxbury\n842 Tremont St (Rte 3A)\nDuxbury MA\nCoffeehouse Feature:  Fred Meltzer  \nFred Meltzer has been performing and recording originals\, covers and tribute music for over 40 years.  His band Free Range has featured at SSFMC in the past.  Fred has played his silly and thoughtful originals for the past several years and his project\, Waxy Shellac and The Tasteless Apples\, is currently recording their inaugural album “Shelf Life” at Ultrasound Productions in Hanover MA.  Looks for it soon on line and in person with a booklet illustrating how all the decades of hits were inspired!  Maybe Fred will be inspired to preview a couple at our first coffeehouse of the season! \nOpener Fran Araujo and Friends: \nFran Araujo is a musician who has been performing for about 12 years. Her musical roots begin with her paternal grandmother in Ireland. She was influenced in childhood by her parents’ Mitch Miller records\, and then was enchanted with the folk music of the 60s’s\, especially with the close harmony of popular groups of the time.  She appreciates and enjoys performing old time and bluegrass.  Fran takes great pleasure in singing and playing with others and believes music is deeply healing.\n\nWe also hope you’ll share your Talent at the OPEN MIC!

He cut his teeth listening to James Taylor\, Joni Mitchell\, Bruce Springsteen\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Muddy Waters\, Bonnie Raitt\, and Mississippi John Hurt at local clubs — but also Cole Porter\, the Gershwins\, and Rodgers and Hart.\nCliff moved to New York in 1978 – because the clubs were great\, the Bitter End\, the Speakeasy\, Kenny’s Castaway\, Folk City and the company amazing\, John Gorka\, Suzanne Vega\, Lucy Kaplansky\, Julie Gold\, Steve Forbert\, Christine Lavin\, and Shawn Colvin. Between long hours as a taxi driver\, Cliff played guitar on the road with Richie Havens\, Melanie and sang jingles for Coke\, Miller Beer and Chevrolet\, “The Heartbeat of America” campaign.\nCliff has produced an incredible number of acclaimed albums\, collaborated with Jazz\, Folk\, and Country legends\, written original songs for a new production of “The Taming of the Shrew” for Folger Theatre and Shakespeare Library in Washington DC\, reunited with old songwriting pals\, John Gorka\, Christine Lavin\, Cheryl Wheeler\, Lucy Kaplansky and Patty Larkin to tour nationally again as On A Winter’s Night and much\, much more!.\nSince the pandemic\, he’s out on the road again and not to be missed!  Right at the Club!  Get your tickets\, and Come on Down!

DESCRIPTION:Harmony on the Green presents Kemp Harris\, joined by Adam O. Lydia Harrell opens. \nKemp Harris is a composer\, musician\, author\, actor\, and teacher. Born in North Carolina\, he taught himself piano and was writing songs at age 14. His album\, entitled Edenton\, looks back to his roots and features The Holmes Brothers. Kemp has shared the stage with Taj Mahal\, Gil Scott-Heron\, and Koko Taylor. He has written and performed original compositions for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and WGBH public television.   \nAdam Osgood is a harp player and spoken word artist who draws his influences from Blues tradition and Beat Poetry. He is comfortable in genres ranging from Folk to Funk and has been playing blues harp since he was 14 years old. \nKemp and Adam met on Star Island\, NH in 1985 and have been making music together ever since. Their unique blend of piano\, vocals and harmonica is a captivating mixture of seasoned blues\, folk and roots influences. It never gets old with these two. They’ve been at it for 38 years and it keeps getting better and better. \nLydia Harrell is one of Boston’s musical treasures. Her sultry\, soulful voice and evocative songwriting have garnered her the attention and respect of the nation’s finest musicians and venues. In a short span\, he cemented his position as a fixture in the city’s thriving music scene. He has performed in venues as large as the Newport Folk Festival\, sharing the limelight with musical legends like Arlo Guthrie and Taj Mahal\, and last performed at the Rose Garden in 2008. The Boston Globe hailed him as a standout songwriter\, with his tunes striking a chord with listeners far and wide. \nIn 2006\, Moock’s career took a heartwarming turn toward family music after the birth of his twins. This shift resulted in a series of highly-praised albums\, a testament to his versatility and depth as a musician. Among his many accolades\, including a 2013 Grammy nomination. But his contributions extend beyond music. A steadfast advocate for social justice\, Moock has channeled his passion into pivotal initiatives. He co-founded The Opening Doors Project\, aiming to push forward racial conversations through the powerful medium of art. \nChandler Travis\, meanwhile\, embarked on his musical voyage in the 1970s. At well over a million miles of roadwork\, including two stints as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, Pete and Maura Kennedy show no signs of slowing down either on tour or in the creative realm. \nSongwriting duo Pete and Maura Kennedy make a strong return to the studio and stage after three years of weekly live-streamed lockdown-era concerts. They took the opportunity to explore classic songwriting in depth\, performing over a thousand songs during the pandemic. That vast overview strengthened and refined their own writing and laid the foundation for this new collection of original\, socially-conscious songs. \n“After such a deep dive into American roots music\, we felt like we had a new set of writing tools. We were ready to create this body of work\, and there’s just SO much to write about\,” says Maura. “During our five-year hiatus from writing and recording\, America changed in massive ways\, divisive ways that have shaken our whole foundation. That has to be addressed by creative artists\, those of us who have a voice to speak for others. Our love of the great things about this country\, things that are under threat\, is the reason we decided to make “Headwinds” the title track of the CD. Political and social headwinds are making it hard to get back “home’ to our greatness as a nation. We want to push back in a positive way against those winds.” \nIn addition to singing and writing\, Pete and Maura are multi-instrumentalists. The thirteen songs are cast in a soundscape that draws from the classic canon of American roots\, in keeping with the theme of getting back “home” as a nation. Acoustic and electric guitars\, a vintage steel guitar\, a gospel-inflected piano/organ mix\, and even a slide ukulele all add colors to a songbag of sounds that have drawn us together during hard times. Pete and Maura believe that those sounds still have the power to pull us through again. \nThe Kennedys began their writing and touring life three decades ago as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, developing their own sound as a frequent support act on Nanci’s tours across America\, Ireland\, Scotland and England. Collaborations with Nanci continued\, culminating in Pete and Maura producing her final album\, “Intersections.” Along the way\, they hosted a nationwide radio program\, “The Dharma Cafe” on Sirius/XM\, wrote and released sixteen CDs of original music\, and have been core artists on folk radio\, expanding their audience further with the inception of the AAA and Americana formats.

Led by guitarist Ruth Rappaport and her fiddler son\, Ben Wetherbee\, the band’s repertoire includes rousing fiddle tunes and traditional\, modern\, and original songs that feature tight harmony singing. They are joined by clawhammer banjo player Joel Wennerstrom and upright bass player Michael Siegel.As a multi-generational four-piece band\, their musical influences are far reaching and include many genres–from Irish fiddle tunes and early country to punk. Ruth brings years of experience as a principal member of the ‘80’s and ’90’s all-woman old-time band from Boston\, “The Poodles\,” touring Europe and the US.  Her son Ben is following in Ruth’s footsteps with his musically diverse fiddle playing\, which has garnered much attention through his many performances in the area. Joel’s rhythmic and melodic banjo playing can be heard on recordings alongside members of the Punch Brothers and various Appalachian fiddle contest winners. You can find Michael playing in numerous Americana\, Bluegrass\, and old-time groups\, including Rachel Sumner’s “Traveling Light” band.  Together they make a highly entertaining quartet.  Hold onto your hats! White’s arc as an award-winning songwriter and performer has taken him from his industrial hometown of Lynn\, MA across the country as hitchhiker\, through Boston’s comedy clubs and coffeehouses\, and onto the stage with greats like Arlo Guthrie\, Taj Mahal\, Ritchie Havens\, Patty Larkin\, Bill Morrissey\, Tom Rush\, Louden Wainwright III\, and Christine Lavin\, with whom he toured for 8 years all across North America in a co-bill called The Funny Side of the Street. At every point\, White has been the ultimate observer\, infusing his work with his experiences as a husband\, a father\, a seeker\, and a joker. In 2011\, he won the Jerry Christen Memorial Award\, given out by Boston Area Coffeehouse Association\, for his work with the community. Their beautiful harmonies\, acoustic guitar work\, and warm stage presence have led them to perform alongside folk stalwarts like Livingston Taylor and Mark Erelli. Their latest album\, “Sure\,” was entirely produced by Eric\, and they’re set to release a related film in 2023. \nErin Ash Sullivan\, also rooted in Massachusetts\, presents a nuanced take on folk music. Rose Garden attendees will remember her as the winner of our 2023 Performing Songwriter Competition. Originally one-half of the folk pair\, Edith O.\, with Amy Speace\, Erin took time away for personal commitments before making a resonant return. The audience was delighted by her beautiful harmonies on Catie’s songs\, as well as her sharing a few of her own songs with us. We are thrilled to welcome her back! \nAntje has won some of the top songwriting awards including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and in one of the nation’s top music markets\, she won the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. Two of her albums found her working with Richard Shindell as producer\, as well as other “folk royalty” such as John Gorka\, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli. \nAntje has extensive touring experience\, criss-crossing the US and Europe many times. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined festivals in Scotland and Denmark. \nThe Bank of America featured Antje’s song “Merry Go Round” in a national TV advertising campaign\, including a Super Bowl audience. Neil Dorfsman\, producer for Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen and Sting says\, “When I first heard Antje I knew I was witnessing something very special. She creates an entire\, detailed world in verse\, and takes you there with beautiful and understated melody. Her songs are stunning paintings of color and shade and always generate the heat and light that real art should. In an unpoetic and ‘in your face’ world\, she is lyrical and subtle” \nAntje has played the TEDMED conference in San Diego. CNN said of the experience\, “Then\, this morning\, the tone of the conference turned from intellectual to deeply emotional when Antje Duvekot played her guitar and sang about her grandmother’s descent into Alzheimer’s disease. Sara’s singing is both powerful and sweet\, with a distinctive and lovely tremolo. It is a voice well suited to native American songs and ballads of Ireland and Scotland. \nIt is not Sara’s lovely voice alone that makes her one of the most popular singers on the folk scene; on many of her songs Sara accompanies herself by frailing a five string banjo and\, when playing dance tunes\, it is obvious why she is regarded as one of the foremost exponents of the clawhammer style. As well as singing and playing\, Sara is well known for her storytelling – specialising in stories from New England where she grew up learning many of her stories from her father. \nSara grew up in New Hampshire but has lived in North Carolina\, Ohio\, Montana\, New York\, Pennsylvania\, Arizona\, Wales\, Scotland and England. As a youngster in North Carolina she developed a love for old time songs and banjo music. She cites Kyle Creed as the chief influence on her understated\, syncopated clawhammer banjo style. She has now been performing professionally for more than 30 years. \n\n“She is one of a select band of performers who still breathe life into traditional ballads.” Vic Smith\, Folk Roots\n“Sara Grey has quietly and powerfully taken over the mantle of premier interpreter of American traditional music.” Tor Jonassen\, WRDV\n\nKieron Means is a singer primarily of traditional songs but also of contemporary songs and guitar player of great merit. He has a great rapport with an audience and has an exceptional professionalism for a young performer. His voice is as smooth as silk\, rich and mellow and he sings to his audience not in spite of them. \nKieron is the son of the traditional singer Sara Grey and music journalist Andrew Means\, one time writer for Melody Maker. He was born in the United States and grew up in Britain gaining a great love of the music of both traditions as well as the contemporary scene. He has become a performer of traditional songs from the US and from the UK and many of the contemporary songs he sings he has written himself. \nHe has toured in the States and often performed with Sara Grey. In 2000 he has performed at Whitby and Wadebridge festivals where he was received with much acclaim. His first CD has received much praise with air play on Travelling Folk and Mr Anderson’s Fine Tunes both on radio Scotland. An article on him will shortly be appearing in Folk Roots magazine.

(cash or checks). \nBorn and raised in rural central Illinois\, David Singley is a singer-songwriter-guitarist living in Saint Paul\, Minnesota\, whose music is born of the street\, the country\, and the academy. An experienced veteran with decades of backing world-class artists and performers\, he has recently joined the “Great Resignation” and set his sights on his own artistic pursuits. His music evokes the golden era of the singer-songwriter: the late ’60s and early-to-mid ’70s; with its chameleonic stylistic twists and turns\, as well as its memorable melodies and insightful\, poetic lyrics. His music expresses a point of view that is at once highly personal and triumphantly global. His voice evokes traces of many of his influences: James Taylor\, Gordon Lightfoot\, Jim Croce\, Jackson Browne\, Dan Fogelberg\, and many others. What? Private coaching? Yes\, 6-10 students weekly too. \nConsidered by many to be an integral part of the national folk scene\, his previous record “Good Good Man” features an eclectic roster of musical types including rocker Mike Posner\, world renown Celtic harpist Aine Minough\, bluesman Chris Smither\, and Al Green’s organist Stacey Wade. \nGilbert runs 3 to 4 miles ever so slowly 5 days a week to stay sharp for the road and does historical aviation research and model building just for great nerdy fun. \nHe even has a tune on a Grammy Nominated children’s album.
