SUMMARY:Rachel Sumner and Traveling Light
DESCRIPTION:Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light are a Boston-based string band making music that blends folk tradition with feminist storytelling\, poetic detail\, and just enough grit. At the center is Sumner’s songwriting—rooted in history\, myth\, and personal reckoning—carried by close harmonies\, upright bass\, acoustic guitar\, and fiddle. The trio features Kat Wallace on fiddle and vocals and Mike Siegel on upright bass and vocals\, whose playing brings both tension and tenderness to the sound. \nThey are the winners of the 2025 Telluride Bluegrass Band Contest.

DESCRIPTION:$10 for all\, cash at the door (age 17 and under free)\nNote: parking is tricky – see this handy parking guide! \nIf you’re a FSSGB member and you’d like to perform\, contact Lori Fassman at lori.fassman@gmail.com to sign up by January 10. \nThe annual FSSGB members’ concert is always a popular event. Our members perform songs which range from traditional ballads to original compositions\, and from instrumental to a cappella pieces. Some of the instruments that have been played at this concert in the past include violin\, cello\, banjo\, mandolin\, guitar\, bass\, keyboard and concertina. Some FSSGB members who have performed at this event have gone on to have successful performing careers\, such as Elijah Wald\, Mark Ryer\, Fool’s Errand and Merle Roesler. \nOur hosts will be Lori Fassman and Paul Beck. They are long-time FSSGB members who are both past Presidents of FSSGB. \nFSSGB members (including new members!) are invited to sign up to perform – one song or a spoken word piece. You may perform alone or with others. Some performers have been participating for years; others will do so for the first time. Children are most welcome. The program will feature professional musicians as well as living room folk enthusiasts. All are welcome. The Midweek Singers are an important part of the program as are the many members who show up especially for this event. The audience is always supportive and lively. \nProceeds from this show help keep the Society strong – we thank the performers and the audience for making this event possible.\nSee you there!

SUMMARY:Fiddler\, singer and songwriter Kathleen Parks
DESCRIPTION:Kathleen Parks is a fiddler\, singer\, and songwriter who brings joyful and creative energy to the stage and studio. \nHer writing leans toward Pop\, Folk\, and classic Jazz\, while her virtuosic fiddle blends and reimagines traditional and modern musical styles with boundless groove\, and a playful improvisational spirit. \nHer deep grounding in Celtic and American roots music blends with her love for pop songwriting\, funk rhythms\, soulful vocals\, and groove-based improvisation\, making every performance unexpected yet familiar: a musical journey from beginning to end. \nFor Kathleen\, music is not about perfection\, but feeling.   This is what has always driven her to write\, sing\, and play. Without feeling\, why play music? Music is a means to express and release our emotions. Understand the feeling\, move the energy\, and bring joy and healing in. Connection to yourself is key to playing\, to playing with others\, and moving an audience. Kathleen strives to always bring this musical value to her teaching and performances alike. \nKathleen is also a founding member of Twisted Pine and the duo Kat and Brad. \n“Goosebump-inducing vocal performances from Kathleen Parks…”– Glide Magazine – \nSee kathleenparksmusic.com for more info. \nTickets are $20 in advance at Eventbrite.com and $25 on the day of the concert.  Doors open at 7:00 and the show begins at 7:30. \nClick to buy tickets now.

SUMMARY:Mike Agranoff House Concert (optional potluck brunch)
DESCRIPTION:12:30pm concert\, optional 11:30am potluck brunch\n$20 cash at the door\nN. Cambridge\, MA (address given when you reserve a seat)\nReservations required: HouseConcerts@fssgb.org \nIf you’ve been around the folk scene\, you couldn’t miss seeing Mike. Tall\, ginger beard\, and always around where the music is. He’s been on the scene for many many years\, listening to the fine details of what makes this genre of music so special to the soul\, so able to make us laugh and cry and think. And lucky for us all\, he got serious about having fun at it. \nLess a singer-songwriter than a singer-songfinder\, Mike takes great delight in discovering the little-known hidden gems\, polishing them with his own distinctive style\, and bringing them to the light of day where they sparkle. He will shift from beautifully contemplative\, to uproariously funny\, to instrumentally brilliant\, to powerfully emotional in the space of a few minutes.  Equally at home in the contemporary and traditional camps of the Folk world\, he is a fine musician and storyteller. His prime instrument is the guitar\, upon which he shines with intricate fingerstyle arrangements of anything from Tin Pan Alley tunes of the ’20s to fiddle tunes to his own music. He also plays concertina\, piano\, banjo\, or sings acapella. The man will capture your attention\, and then your heart. \nNot only a performer\, Mike is involved in presenting folk music as well. He is one of the prime movers of The Folk Project\, New Jersey’s oldest and strongest folk music organization. For over four decades he was chairman of that organization’s Troubadour Acoustic Concert Series (née The Minstrel Coffeehouse)\, one of the longest lived and most respected folk venues in the country.

SUMMARY:Vance Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:“If Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens had a love child\, with Rodney Dangerfield as the midwife\, the results might be something close to the great Vance Gilbert”\, says Richmond Magazine. One of the originators of the finally recognized R&B/Folk/Jazz crossover-sub-genre\, Vance was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. Starting out hoping to be an R&B and jazz singer once at college\, there he discovered his affinity for the storytelling sensibilities of the acoustic singer-songwriter thing. Noted not only for being the ever consummate performer\, Gilbert has recorded 13 albums\, including 5 for Philo/Rounder Records.

SUMMARY:North Reading Community Coffeehouse March\, 2026 Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present a very special March\, 2026 Showcase on Saturday\, March 21 at 6:30. We are paying tribute to Bill Staines.  Bill was a major figure in American Folk Music as a singer-songwriter for over 50 years.  He travelled and toured constantly\, doing 150- 200 shows a year.  He was a very humble\, low-key person who always made himself available.  He recorded about 25 albums and was called by the late Nanci Griffith “the Woodie Guthrie of my generation.”  Some of his more well-known songs are “Bridges”\, “Crossing the Water”\, “My Sweet Wyoming Home”\, “The Roseville Fair”\,  “A Place in the Choir”\, “Child of Mine” and “River”.  His songs have been recorded by many other artists.  In addition\, Bill was instrumental in helping get the North Reading Community Coffeehouse up and running with a concert in 2017\, which to date was our best-attended event by far.\n\nThe performers for the evening are Eddie Dee with Holly Turner on piano and Chris Moriarty on cello; Val Fowler and Art Grossman.  This is going to be a very entertaining evening and one we have been looking forward to for a long time..  .\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe event is free but donations will be gratefully accepted and we will be offering refreshments with all the proceeds going to the Friends of the Flint Memorial Library in North Reading with whom we will be doing these concerts in conjunction with\, to help support the library.\n\nThe event will also be livestreamed on the North Reading Community Coffeehouse Facebook page and on the YouTube channel the following day!  The links to those two places are: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/nrcoffeehouse \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n     https://www.youtube.com/@NRCoffeehouse\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are located in the Activity Room of the Flint Memorial Library at 147 Park Street in North Reading.  There is plenty of free parking.  Please come\, sit back\, relax and listen to some terrific music!  If you have any questions\, please contact Art Grossman at NRCoffeehouse@gmail.com.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Andy Cohen\, Eleanor Ellis and William Lee Ellis House Concert
DESCRIPTION:$20 at the door\nReservations required: HouseConcerts@fssgb.org \nAcclaimed acoustic performers Andy Cohen\, Eleanor Ellis and William Lee Ellis return as a trio with this new album\, WHISTLIN’ PAST THE GRAVEYARD. Released on Cohen’s Riverlark label\, the ambitious project is a 21-track tour-de-force of old-time blues\, gospel\, ballads\, ragtime\, and country song that surpasses their previous high bar\, the 1993 Marimac outing\, Preachin’ in That Wilderness. \nAll three musicians have established themselves as noted artists in the folk and blues worlds\, both on stage and in the studio: Eleanor records for the Patuxent label\, Andy for Earwig Music\, and William for Yellow Dog\, where his latest solo album\, Ghost Hymns\, earned a Blues Music Awards nomination for Acoustic Blues Album of the Year. \nProduced by William Lee Ellis and River Hartley (Ghost Hymns)\, Whistlin’ is a truly unique listen\, one that fits no single musical category; rather\, it explores with finger-picked verve and joy the expansive palette of America’s musical past\, still relevant and very much alive in the sound of this remarkable trio. \nANDY COHEN: “A singularly unique figure\, Andy Cohen deserves some long overdue accolades.” – ALL MUSIC GUIDE \nELEANOR ELLIS: “A celebrated master of the country and Piedmont blues\, one of the most significant women in the acoustic genre… a torchbearer.” – LIVING BLUES \nWILLIAM LEE ELLIS: “A masterful genre-bender who sounds completely at home and thoroughly invested in whatever style he tackles.” – ACOUSTIC GUITAR

SUMMARY:Richard Shindell
DESCRIPTION:Innovative\, original and occasionally spiritual\, Shindell’s songs weave tales that interchangeably champion the downtrodden\, exalt the disaffected or wax empathetic to those lost to society’s fringes. From lighthearted ballads and adulterous love songs\, to dirges and diatribes that skillfully skewer politics\, prejudice\, war and religion\, to the comic point-of-view of a cow stuck in a barbed wire fence\, he has a unique ability to morph into the soul of the many and varied personalities he casts as narrators in certain songs—veritable novellas framed in haunting acoustic melodies.

SUMMARY:Christine Lavin and Don White
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of music and humor with Christine and Don. “It doesn’t sound like a folk concert\, it sounds like a comedy concert\,” says White of his laughter-inducing co-bills with Lavin. “We rehearse and we rehearse and then inevitably\, she’ll throw something at me that I have no idea about\, with a mischievous grin that lets me know she’s been thinking about it all afternoon. Just to see what will happen. And she’s taught me to do the same.” \n…when Christine Lavin and Don White make us laugh\, there always a warm shimmer of community beneath the silliness. Of all the gifts great entertainers can bring to the stage\, I think this is perhaps the rarest and most valuable. Many can dazzle us; but only the very\, very best can befriend us\, and remind us that\, in the end\, we are all wary acrobats in the great human circus. And really\, when have we ever needed laughs like that more? ” – Scott Alarik
