SUMMARY:Emma's Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The New Revival Coffeehouse is pleased to present national touring musicians Emma’s Revolution on April 5\, 2025. \nKnown for fearless\, truth-telling lyrics and melodies you can’t resist singing\, Emma’s Revolution is the dynamic\, award-winning activist duo of Pat Humphries & Sandy O. SUMMARY:Danielle Miraglia - April 19\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDanielle Miraglia comes armed with a strong steady thumb on an old Gibson and an infectious stomp-box rhythm with tunes ranging from heart-felt to socially conscious that will move both your heart and hips. Her latest “Bright Shining Stars” debuted at #15 on the Billboard Blues Charts. Cascade Blues Association calls it “… tough as rawhide\, but smooth as blended whiskey.” Released Oct 2020 with Vizztone Label Group\, it’s a solo acoustic folk/blues record that highlights the one-woman-band live sound she’s honed over the years\, featuring guest appearances by talented friends Laurence Scudder\, Peter Parcek and Richard “Rosy” Rosenblatt. It includes originals as well as a collection of songs she’s been covering at live shows over the years\, paying homage to influences like Big Bill Broonzy\, Bob Dylan\, Janis Joplin and more\, plus the title track “Bright Shining Stars\,” written by her husband\, Tom Bianchi. \n“Americana and blues practitioner Danielle Miraglia wisely avoids fuss and clutter on her latest album\, Bright Shining Stars. Fingerpicking and strumming on acoustic guitar are central to her sound\, with percussion frequently provided by the infectious stomp of her foot. Three of the 11 tracks here are solo recordings\, reinforcing a truism that the artist frequently has proven on Boston-area stages: A charming voice and fluid guitar prowess are all an artist needs to keep a listener rapt.” – Bobby Reed\, Downbeat Magazine \n“Straddling the line where folk/roots meets rock/blues\, Miraglia has a voice that can go from a raspy come-hither purr to an Etta James-esque powerhouse belt\, although she may be best known for her lead thumb — a heavy\, thumping strike on her Gibson that’s backdrop percussion in itself.” – Lauren Daley – The Boston Globe \n“Danielle Miraglia is like a musical butterfly who’s been granted unlimited creative metamorphoses. Even her musical chrysalis stage was a surprise emergence. Unlike so many Boston artists who attended one of the city’s many music schools\, Miraglia went to Emerson College\, graduating with a creative writing degree. Though she owned an acoustic guitar she seldom played anywhere but at home\, she hadn’t given any thought to making a career as a singer-songwriter until one fateful night at the famous\, now-defunct Kendall Cafe. She went to an open mic at the Kendall just to watch and absorb. It didn’t take long for it to register with her: “I thought\, ‘That’s what I want to do: Get on stage to do my storytelling that way.’” Voila! \nHer evolution as a songwriter and performer since then has been remarkable. She quickly won great acclaim and a faithful national and regional following after beginning as a “folk-blues” picker\, and it’s a persona she still skillfully embraces in solo shows\, but to hear her musical storytelling with such a fine backing band as the satirically named Glory Junkies (Laurence Scudder\, viola; Erik White\, guitar; Chris Anzalone\, drums; and Jim Larkin\, bass) is an entirely different dimension. That soul of a creative writer thrives in a vast range of musical styles. Danielle now rocks an electric guitar with equal aplomb\, and all with a rocking and soulful energy that pays homage to top influences such as Janis Joplin\, Prince and the Stones. No matter how Danielle Miraglia’s stories unfold on stage\, they are a joy to hear. \nShe and the Glory Junkies wowed the sellout crowd during their live-stream taping at the Fallout Shelter\, playing tunes from the band’s second album\, “All My Heroes Are Ghosts ” — now billed under the moniker “Danielle M & the Glory Junkies (sparing DJs the quandary of the pronunciation of her last name). Those stories she dreamt of telling musically on stage are now like butterflies of their own.” – Nate Dow – https://asheardhere.com/ \n“Danielle is a dynamic and captivating musician; her rich soulful voice and blues guitar mastery resonate in a performance both rare and unforgettable.”\n– Paul Patchel\, State Street Blues Festival – Media\, PA \n“The genius of Glory Junkies is that Miraglia successfully pokes fun at a proverbial “selfie nation\,” while also fully owning that tendency. Glory Junkies offers up deeply narrative lyricism and carefully crafted compositions…Glory Junkies boasts a song about reality TV\, and one (the title track) that pokes fun at immortalizing one’s own image. Others stray into more personal territory\, hitting close to home on Miraglia’s family dynamic\, but the concept of the album remains a mainstay throughout.” – Liz Rowley\, BestNewBands \nDanielle has toured and played major venues across the United States and beyond\, shining in both the Folk and Blues circuits including New York State Blues Festival\, New Bedford Summerfest\, The Narrows Center for the Arts (Fall River\, MA)\, The Birchmere (Alexandria\, VA)\, The Ramshead (Annapolis\, MD)\, Sellersville Theater (Sellersville\, PA) and the list goes on…. \nShe has opened for Buddy Guy\, George Thorogood\, Joan Osborne\, John Oates\, Colin Hay\, John Mayall\, Johnny Winter\, Bettye Lavette\, John Hammond Jr.\, Sonny Landreth\, Robert Cray\, Rodney Crowell and performed side stages at events with The Black Crowes\, Mary J Blige\, The Indigo Girls and many more.

SUMMARY:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse Performing Artist Series Presents Kray Van Kirk
DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse Performing Artist Series is proud to welcome singer/songwriter Kray Van Kirk on Friday\, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.)  This is Kray’s first appearance and we are really looking forward to having him.  The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is located in the Activity Room at the Flint Memorial Library\, 147 Park St\, North Reading\, MA. There is a suggested donation of $15 and seats can be reserved by emailing Nrcoffeehouse@gmail.com. \nA fine finger-style guitarist with a precise baritone\, Kray Van Kirk has a Ph.D. from the University of Alaska\, but he set science aside to write songs\, tell stories and summon heroes. \n“We are driven by myth and the seasons of the heart\,” he says\, “and the stories are all true. There is a dark cave inside each of us\, and monsters of all kinds lurk there\, all the more lethal for being hidden. The quest is to journey inside\, render the monsters powerless\, find whatever it is that burns at the core of your soul and bring it back into the light. In a world divided it is critical to write songs and tell stories that show absolutely everyone they get to be the hero. Nobody is left behind.” \nWhen he reached Scotland and the Fringe Festival\, the Daily Fringe Review wrote The evening’s act was Kray Van Kirk\, whose 12-string guitar and soaring vocals were spellbinding; the Alaskan singer-songwriter\, in his Edinburgh debut\, was not the reason I arrived early\, but was certainly why I stayed late.” \nOf this charming\, Quixotic and eclectic performer\, the Borderline Folk Club in New York wrote that Van Kirk was “what every singer-songwriter should aspire to.” \nPlease join the North Reading Community Coffeehouse in welcoming Kray Van Kirk for what is sure to be a very entertaining evening!

SUMMARY:Abbie Gardner + Finals of Performing Songwriter Competition
DESCRIPTION:Showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFEATURED PERFORMER: ABBIE GARDNER\n\nALSO THIS NIGHT: Finals of Performing Songwriter Competition. Finalists will include: Dan Cloutier\, Thomas Charles Clukey and Charlotte Morris!\n\nABBIE GARDNER is a fiery dobro player with an infectious smile. Whether performing solo or with Americana darlings Red Molly\, her tales of love and loss\, both gritty and sweet\, are propelled by her impeccable slide guitar chops.\n\nAs an award-winning songwriter\, captivating vocalist\, and a world-class lap style dobro player\, she has an unmistakable sound all her own. This is masterfully captured on her 2022 CD “DobroSinger.” The record made it to #11 on the Billboard Blues Charts and #2 on the Folk DJ Charts\, receiving rave reviews in Bluegrass Unlimited\, Acoustic Guitar Magazine and American Songwriter. It’s a raw intimate recording full of blues\, ballads and the ache of the unknown. It’s quite a contrast to her previous CD\, which featured a co-write with Chris Stapleton and leaned on full band production. Abbie stands strong as a solo act and has opened for Lori McKenna and Martina McBride.\n\nAcoustic Guitar Magazine says\, “sheer brilliance and power … her evocative guitar is a second voice throughout\, sometimes singing in unison\, in harmony other times\, or answering as in a conversation with the singer. The playing and singing are both impeccable and loaded with personality. You can hear every nuance of the slide\, smooth one moment or rattling slightly at the end of a phrase like punctuation; and her intimate\, pitch-perfect vocals—wistful\, playful\, confessional—sound like they’re dancing with the guitar.”\n\nHer background is as varied as the songs she writes. Her father\, Herb Gardner\, is a stride pianist and dixieland trombonist. Abbie didn’t get into music school on her original instrument (flute)\, but graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Occupational Therapy. She gradually found her way back to music in Boston’s folk music scene.\n\nDuring the pandemic\, Abbie started teaching free Woodshed dobro lessons in her backyard and posting them to YouTube. Helping other people fan the flames of their creativity has always been a nice balance to performing. She has taught in person at Nashville Dobro Camp\, ResoSummit\, Kaufman Kamp\, Rockygrass Academy\, and Roots Music Camp. Then for Songwriting\, she’s taught at New England Songwriters Retreat\, Swannanoa Gathering\, Summer Songs\, and Moab Folk Camp. Students can check out her month-long\, small group virtual songwriting classes and her downloadable “Dobro from Scratch” course.\n\n“Not only a first-rate Dobro player but a songwriter to be reckoned with.” –John Platt\, WFUV

SUMMARY:"Bound for Glory" - Woody Guthrie Tribute Show
DESCRIPTION:FSSGB is pleased to present “Bound for Glory”\, our Woody Guthrie Tribute show! The show features many FSSGB members and friends\, many of whom have performed in past Woody shows going way back to the 60’s. \nAdmission: $10 for all at the door (children 17 and under are free) \n“Bound for Glory” is a performance of songs and stories about the life of Woodrow Wilson (“Woody”) Guthrie\, considered by many to be the founder of modern American folk music. Many wonderful songs written by Woody and performed by members of FSSGB are interspersed with short recitations from his autobiography. It is a funny\, cynical\, earthy and tragic account of his life in an Oklahoma oil-boom town\, of the Depression that followed\, and of his subsequent travels in\, on\, and under trains\, in stolen cars and on his feet\, round an America going rotten from the top downwards. \nChorus sheets are made available and the audience is encouraged to sing along. \nRefreshments will be served at intermission. \nParking: there are small lots on either side of the church\, and there’s some on-street parking in the neighborhood. We’re allowed to park at the middle school next door (75 Church St)\, and there’s a municipal lot at the intersection of Church St and Rt 20 (one block south of the church).

SUMMARY:Janie Meneely and Rob van Sante House Concert
DESCRIPTION:Reservations required: send email to HouseConcerts@fssgb.org.  $20 cash at the door (students $5\, 17 and under free) \nMeneely & van Sante present an evening of music as lively as it is eclectic\, with songs culled from maritime traditions old and new mixed with contemporary ballads about the ways of today’s world. \nJanie Meneely and Rob van Sante began coalescing as a duo in 2015\, with Rob offering support on Janie’s solo gigs whenever he was in the Washington\, D.C. area\, where she was living at the time. As a prolific songwriter of all things Chesapeake\, Janie was a well-known figure around the mid-Atlantic waterfront\, but it was Rob’s brilliant guitar work and harmony singing that really pushed her work into the greater realm of the traditional folk world where Rob had already made his mark. \nWhile Janie had stayed “local” throughout her musical career\, Rob had traveled the world\, first as a touring artist in his own right\, and then as back-up musician/sideman for\, primarily\, Alan Reid (co-founder and chief songwriter of the Battlefield Band from Scotland) and John Conolly (beloved raconteur of songs and stories pertaining to Grimsby\, among them the now-classic Fiddler’s Green). He played for festivals\, concert halls\, private living rooms and pubs in Britain\, Ireland\, China\, Australia\, New Zealand\, Canada\, the United States\, Germany\, Russia\, Japan . . . . this list goes on. Known for his trademark guitar style—primarily using alternate tunings—Rob remains a sought-after accompanist and session musician. \nProbably the most exciting element of the duo is the collaborative aspect of their latest compositions. Janie’s lyrics buoyed by Rob’s arrangements reflect a sensitive and compelling grasp of contemporary concerns\, whether it be anti-immigration policies (Lady Liberty) or the simple reminder that we set an example for future generations (For the Love of It All). But just as often\, their songs—and their on-stage banter\, for that matter—are laced with humor (sometimes bawdy!) and spill out with galvanizing energy (Whitby Ale). \nWhether they sing of long-ago tragedy\, retell a campfire ghost story or offer up a song of social justice\, their music invites audience participation\, and that\, to their mind\, remains the most gratifying aspect of any given performance.

SUMMARY:Rachel Sumner and Traveling Light
DESCRIPTION:Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light are a Boston-based string band making music that blends folk tradition with feminist storytelling\, poetic detail\, and just enough grit. At the center is Sumner’s songwriting—rooted in history\, myth\, and personal reckoning—carried by close harmonies\, upright bass\, acoustic guitar\, and fiddle. The trio features Kat Wallace on fiddle and vocals and Mike Siegel on upright bass and vocals\, whose playing brings both tension and tenderness to the sound. \nThey are the winners of the 2025 Telluride Bluegrass Band Contest.

Some FSSGB members who have performed at this event have gone on to have successful performing careers\, such as Elijah Wald\, Mark Ryer\, Fool’s Errand and Merle Roesler. \nOur hosts will be Lori Fassman and Paul Beck. They are long-time FSSGB members who are both past Presidents of FSSGB. \nFSSGB members (including new members!) are invited to sign up to perform – one song or a spoken word piece. You may perform alone or with others. Some performers have been participating for years; others will do so for the first time. Children are most welcome. The program will feature professional musicians as well as living room folk enthusiasts. All are welcome. The Midweek Singers are an important part of the program as are the many members who show up especially for this event. The audience is always supportive and lively. \nProceeds from this show help keep the Society strong – we thank the performers and the audience for making this event possible.\nSee you there!

SUMMARY:Fiddler\, singer and songwriter Kathleen Parks
DESCRIPTION:Kathleen Parks is a fiddler\, singer\, and songwriter who brings joyful and creative energy to the stage and studio. \nHer writing leans toward Pop\, Folk\, and classic Jazz\, while her virtuosic fiddle blends and reimagines traditional and modern musical styles with boundless groove\, and a playful improvisational spirit. \nHer deep grounding in Celtic and American roots music blends with her love for pop songwriting\, funk rhythms\, soulful vocals\, and groove-based improvisation\, making every performance unexpected yet familiar: a musical journey from beginning to end. \nFor Kathleen\, music is not about perfection\, but feeling.   This is what has always driven her to write\, sing\, and play. Without feeling\, why play music? Music is a means to express and release our emotions. Understand the feeling\, move the energy\, and bring joy and healing in. Connection to yourself is key to playing\, to playing with others\, and moving an audience. Kathleen strives to always bring this musical value to her teaching and performances alike. \nKathleen is also a founding member of Twisted Pine and the duo Kat and Brad. \n“Goosebump-inducing vocal performances from Kathleen Parks…”– Glide Magazine – \nSee kathleenparksmusic.com for more info. \nTickets are $20 in advance at Eventbrite.com and $25 on the day of the concert.  Doors open at 7:00 and the show begins at 7:30. \nClick to buy tickets now.

SUMMARY:Mike Agranoff House Concert (optional potluck brunch)
DESCRIPTION:12:30pm concert\, optional 11:30am potluck brunch\n$20 cash at the door\nN. Cambridge\, MA (address given when you reserve a seat)\nReservations required: HouseConcerts@fssgb.org \nIf you’ve been around the folk scene\, you couldn’t miss seeing Mike. Tall\, ginger beard\, and always around where the music is. He’s been on the scene for many many years\, listening to the fine details of what makes this genre of music so special to the soul\, so able to make us laugh and cry and think. And lucky for us all\, he got serious about having fun at it. \nLess a singer-songwriter than a singer-songfinder\, Mike takes great delight in discovering the little-known hidden gems\, polishing them with his own distinctive style\, and bringing them to the light of day where they sparkle. He will shift from beautifully contemplative\, to uproariously funny\, to instrumentally brilliant\, to powerfully emotional in the space of a few minutes.  Equally at home in the contemporary and traditional camps of the Folk world\, he is a fine musician and storyteller. His prime instrument is the guitar\, upon which he shines with intricate fingerstyle arrangements of anything from Tin Pan Alley tunes of the ’20s to fiddle tunes to his own music. He also plays concertina\, piano\, banjo\, or sings acapella. The man will capture your attention\, and then your heart. \nNot only a performer\, Mike is involved in presenting folk music as well. He is one of the prime movers of The Folk Project\, New Jersey’s oldest and strongest folk music organization. For over four decades he was chairman of that organization’s Troubadour Acoustic Concert Series (née The Minstrel Coffeehouse)\, one of the longest lived and most respected folk venues in the country.

SUMMARY:Vance Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:“If Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens had a love child\, with Rodney Dangerfield as the midwife\, the results might be something close to the great Vance Gilbert”\, says Richmond Magazine. One of the originators of the finally recognized R&B/Folk/Jazz crossover-sub-genre\, Vance was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. Starting out hoping to be an R&B and jazz singer once at college\, there he discovered his affinity for the storytelling sensibilities of the acoustic singer-songwriter thing. Noted not only for being the ever consummate performer\, Gilbert has recorded 13 albums\, including 5 for Philo/Rounder Records.
