In a short span\, he cemented his position as a fixture in the city’s thriving music scene. He has performed in venues as large as the Newport Folk Festival\, sharing the limelight with musical legends like Arlo Guthrie and Taj Mahal\, and last performed at the Rose Garden in 2008. The Boston Globe hailed him as a standout songwriter\, with his tunes striking a chord with listeners far and wide. \nIn 2006\, Moock’s career took a heartwarming turn toward family music after the birth of his twins. This shift resulted in a series of highly-praised albums\, a testament to his versatility and depth as a musician. Among his many accolades\, including a 2013 Grammy nomination. But his contributions extend beyond music. A steadfast advocate for social justice\, Moock has channeled his passion into pivotal initiatives. He co-founded The Opening Doors Project\, aiming to push forward racial conversations through the powerful medium of art. \nChandler Travis\, meanwhile\, embarked on his musical voyage in the 1970s. Making his mark as part of the duo\, Travis Shook and the Club Wow\, he garnered national attention and shared the stage with luminaries like George Carlin and Bonnie Raitt. Over the years\, Travis’s unique fusion of humor and soulful songwriting found expression in a range of musical endeavors\, from the Incredible Casuals to the Chandler Travis Philharmonic\, solidifying his legacy in the world of music.

At well over a million miles of roadwork\, including two stints as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, Pete and Maura Kennedy show no signs of slowing down either on tour or in the creative realm. \nSongwriting duo Pete and Maura Kennedy make a strong return to the studio and stage after three years of weekly live-streamed lockdown-era concerts. They took the opportunity to explore classic songwriting in depth\, performing over a thousand songs during the pandemic. That vast overview strengthened and refined their own writing and laid the foundation for this new collection of original\, socially-conscious songs. \n“After such a deep dive into American roots music\, we felt like we had a new set of writing tools. We were ready to create this body of work\, and there’s just SO much to write about\,” says Maura. “During our five-year hiatus from writing and recording\, America changed in massive ways\, divisive ways that have shaken our whole foundation. That has to be addressed by creative artists\, those of us who have a voice to speak for others. Our love of the great things about this country\, things that are under threat\, is the reason we decided to make “Headwinds” the title track of the CD. Political and social headwinds are making it hard to get back “home’ to our greatness as a nation. We want to push back in a positive way against those winds.” \nIn addition to singing and writing\, Pete and Maura are multi-instrumentalists. The thirteen songs are cast in a soundscape that draws from the classic canon of American roots\, in keeping with the theme of getting back “home” as a nation. Acoustic and electric guitars\, a vintage steel guitar\, a gospel-inflected piano/organ mix\, and even a slide ukulele all add colors to a songbag of sounds that have drawn us together during hard times. Pete and Maura believe that those sounds still have the power to pull us through again. \nThe Kennedys began their writing and touring life three decades ago as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, developing their own sound as a frequent support act on Nanci’s tours across America\, Ireland\, Scotland and England. Collaborations with Nanci continued\, culminating in Pete and Maura producing her final album\, “Intersections.” Along the way\, they hosted a nationwide radio program\, “The Dharma Cafe” on Sirius/XM\, wrote and released sixteen CDs of original music\, and have been core artists on folk radio\, expanding their audience further with the inception of the AAA and Americana formats.

There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $15 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe Ruth and Ben String Band plays electrifying old-time Appalachian music. Led by guitarist Ruth Rappaport and her fiddler son\, Ben Wetherbee\, the band’s repertoire includes rousing fiddle tunes and traditional\, modern\, and original songs that feature tight harmony singing. They are joined by clawhammer banjo player Joel Wennerstrom and upright bass player Michael Siegel.As a multi-generational four-piece band\, their musical influences are far reaching and include many genres–from Irish fiddle tunes and early country to punk. Ruth brings years of experience as a principal member of the ‘80’s and ’90’s all-woman old-time band from Boston\, “The Poodles\,” touring Europe and the US.  Her son Ben is following in Ruth’s footsteps with his musically diverse fiddle playing\, which has garnered much attention through his many performances in the area. Joel’s rhythmic and melodic banjo playing can be heard on recordings alongside members of the Punch Brothers and various Appalachian fiddle contest winners. You can find Michael playing in numerous Americana\, Bluegrass\, and old-time groups\, including Rachel Sumner’s “Traveling Light” band.  Together they make a highly entertaining quartet.  Hold onto your hats! This will be a lively show! Ruth and Ben have recently released new album\, “Newfangled Folk” and look forward to playing selections from the album at the show. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. He’s been on the scene for many many years\, listening to the fine details of what makes this genre of music so special to the soul\, so able to make us laugh and cry and think. And lucky for us all\, he got serious about having fun at it. \nLess a singer-songwriter than a singer-songfinder\, Mike takes great delight in discovering the little-known hidden gems\, polishing them with his own distinctive style\, and bringing them to the light of day where they sparkle. He will shift from beautifully contemplative\, to uproariously funny\, to instrumentally brilliant\, to powerfully emotional in the space of a few minutes. Equally at home in the contemporary and traditional camps of the Folk world\, he is a fine musician and storyteller. DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present Don White.  Don is equal parts storyteller-comedian-author-troubadour-folk singer-songwriter\, and has been bringing audiences to laughter and tears for 30 years. White’s arc as an award-winning songwriter and performer has taken him from his industrial hometown of Lynn\, MA across the country as hitchhiker\, through Boston’s comedy clubs and coffeehouses\, and onto the stage with greats like Arlo Guthrie\, Taj Mahal\, Ritchie Havens\, Patty Larkin\, Bill Morrissey\, Tom Rush\, Louden Wainwright III\, and Christine Lavin\, with whom he toured for 8 years all across North America in a co-bill called The Funny Side of the Street. At every point\, White has been the ultimate observer\, infusing his work with his experiences as a husband\, a father\, a seeker\, and a joker. In 2011\, he won the Jerry Christen Memorial Award\, given out by Boston Area Coffeehouse Association\, for his work with the community. Having been a team since 2012\, their knack for transforming life’s challenges into lyrical narratives stands out. Their beautiful harmonies\, acoustic guitar work\, and warm stage presence have led them to perform alongside folk stalwarts like Livingston Taylor and Mark Erelli. Their latest album\, “Sure\,” was entirely produced by Eric\, and they’re set to release a related film in 2023. \nErin Ash Sullivan\, also rooted in Massachusetts\, presents a nuanced take on folk music. Rose Garden attendees will remember her as the winner of our 2023 Performing Songwriter Competition. Originally one-half of the folk pair\, Edith O.\, with Amy Speace\, Erin took time away for personal commitments before making a resonant return. Her 2021 solo debut\, “We Can Hear Each Other\,” found success\, particularly her track “Fireflies.” Gaining attention within the folk community\, her accolades include the Mark Erelli Judge’s Choice Award. Erin’s artistry\, often described as both delicate and evocative\, evokes comparisons to established artists\, notably Dar Williams.

DESCRIPTION:Antje returns to the Harmony on the Green stage after accompanying Catie Curtis at her show here back in May. The audience was delighted by her beautiful harmonies on Catie’s songs\, as well as her sharing a few of her own songs with us. We are thrilled to welcome her back! \nAntje has won some of the top songwriting awards including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and in one of the nation’s top music markets\, she won the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. Two of her albums found her working with Richard Shindell as producer\, as well as other “folk royalty” such as John Gorka\, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli. \nAntje has extensive touring experience\, criss-crossing the US and Europe many times. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined festivals in Scotland and Denmark. \nThe Bank of America featured Antje’s song “Merry Go Round” in a national TV advertising campaign\, including a Super Bowl audience. Neil Dorfsman\, producer for Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen and Sting says\, “When I first heard Antje I knew I was witnessing something very special. She creates an entire\, detailed world in verse\, and takes you there with beautiful and understated melody. Her songs are stunning paintings of color and shade and always generate the heat and light that real art should. In an unpoetic and ‘in your face’ world\, she is lyrical and subtle” \nAntje has played the TEDMED conference in San Diego. CNN said of the experience\, “Then\, this morning\, the tone of the conference turned from intellectual to deeply emotional when Antje Duvekot played her guitar and sang about her grandmother’s descent into Alzheimer’s disease. Duvekot’s song was all too relatable for those of us who have watched loved ones slip away. ‘And Anna tries to form a thought / But at the end she’s forgotten where she started from / There’s something she would like to say / But the words in her head seem to have got away’ she sang.” \nAntje’s most recent album\, New Wild West was released in September\, 2023.  \nOpening for Antje will be Eva Gertz. Eva is an eclectic artist of many mediums\, born and raised in Melrose\, MA where she started piano lessons at a young age. DESCRIPTION:General admission: $20\, $5 for students \nConcert will be held in a private home in Brookline MA.\nReservations required: email HouseConcerts@fssgb.org for reservations and directions. \nSara Grey is one of the most gifted and knowledgeable artists working in the field of traditional music. Sara’s singing is both powerful and sweet\, with a distinctive and lovely tremolo. It is a voice well suited to native American songs and ballads of Ireland and Scotland. \nIt is not Sara’s lovely voice alone that makes her one of the most popular singers on the folk scene; on many of her songs Sara accompanies herself by frailing a five string banjo and\, when playing dance tunes\, it is obvious why she is regarded as one of the foremost exponents of the clawhammer style. As well as singing and playing\, Sara is well known for her storytelling – specialising in stories from New England where she grew up learning many of her stories from her father. \nSara grew up in New Hampshire but has lived in North Carolina\, Ohio\, Montana\, New York\, Pennsylvania\, Arizona\, Wales\, Scotland and England. As a youngster in North Carolina she developed a love for old time songs and banjo music. She cites Kyle Creed as the chief influence on her understated\, syncopated clawhammer banjo style. She has now been performing professionally for more than 30 years. \n\n“She is one of a select band of performers who still breathe life into traditional ballads.” Vic Smith\, Folk Roots\n“Sara Grey has quietly and powerfully taken over the mantle of premier interpreter of American traditional music.” Tor Jonassen\, WRDV\n\nKieron Means is a singer primarily of traditional songs but also of contemporary songs and guitar player of great merit. He has a great rapport with an audience and has an exceptional professionalism for a young performer. His voice is as smooth as silk\, rich and mellow and he sings to his audience not in spite of them. \nKieron is the son of the traditional singer Sara Grey and music journalist Andrew Means\, one time writer for Melody Maker. He was born in the United States and grew up in Britain gaining a great love of the music of both traditions as well as the contemporary scene. He has become a performer of traditional songs from the US and from the UK and many of the contemporary songs he sings he has written himself. \nHe has toured in the States and often performed with Sara Grey. In 2000 he has performed at Whitby and Wadebridge festivals where he was received with much acclaim. His first CD has received much praise with air play on Travelling Folk and Mr Anderson’s Fine Tunes both on radio Scotland. An article on him will shortly be appearing in Folk Roots magazine.

Well-crafted instrumentation – using guitars\, mandolin\, ukulele\, piano\, melodica\, an inventive keyboard and three-part harmonies as tight as jeans from the dryer – enthralls audiences again and again.

DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present its May Showcase.  The performers are: Diane Battistello\, Uriel Bourque and Bayley Cyros\, Texas Dave Hardwick\, John Loretz and Anne Sandstrom.  Each performer will do about a 30 minute set. The event is free but donations will be gratefully accepted and we will be offering refreshments with all the proceeds going to the Friends of the Flint Memorial Library in North Reading with whom we will be doing these concerts in conjunction with\, to help support the library.  We are located in the Activity Room of the Flint Memorial Library at 147 Park Street in North Reading.  There is plenty of free parking.  We start at 6:30.  Please come\, sit back\, relax and listen to some terrific music!  If you have any questions\, please contact Art Grossman at NRCoffeehouse@gmail.com.   \n\n

DESCRIPTION:The Open Book Coffeehouse continues its series of live monthly concerts on Saturday evening\, May 18\, featuring acoustic artist David Singley. The coffeehouse is located at the Canton Public Library\, 786 Washington Street\, Canton.  Doors open at 6:45 PM; music starts at 7:30 PM.  Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for students of any age. Tickets are available that evening on a first come\, first serve basis. (cash or checks). \nBorn and raised in rural central Illinois\, David Singley is a singer-songwriter-guitarist living in Saint Paul\, Minnesota\, whose music is born of the street\, the country\, and the academy. An experienced veteran with decades of backing world-class artists and performers\, he has recently joined the “Great Resignation” and set his sights on his own artistic pursuits. His music evokes the golden era of the singer-songwriter: the late ’60s and early-to-mid ’70s; with its chameleonic stylistic twists and turns\, as well as its memorable melodies and insightful\, poetic lyrics. His music expresses a point of view that is at once highly personal and triumphantly global. His voice evokes traces of many of his influences: James Taylor\, Gordon Lightfoot\, Jim Croce\, Jackson Browne\, Dan Fogelberg\, and many others. His guitar playing is at once highly focused and passionate\, impressive yet always absolutely appropriate to the song at hand. \nEnjoy the relaxing\, warm atmosphere of friendly people\, good music\, coffee\, tea\, and home baked goodies.  The Open Book Coffeehouse is located in the community room of the Canton Public Library at 786 Washington Street\, Canton\, and is made possible by the Friends of the Library. Word spread like wildfire about Gilbert’s stage-owning singing and playing\, and Shawn Colvin invited him to be special guest on her 1992 Fat City tour where he took much of America by storm and by surprise. “With the voice of an angel\, the wit of a devil\, and the guitar playing of a god..” wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. \nNoted not only for being the ever consummate performer\, Gilbert has recorded 13 albums\, including 5 for Philo/Rounder Records. Along with being opener of choice for artists as varied as Arlo Guthrie\, Anita Baker\, The Milk Carton Kids\, and Southside Johnny\, the mid 2000’s found Gilbert opening 150+ shows for comedian George Carlin. \nGilbert has also been a prominent presence at some of the world’s most prestigious gatherings and halls\, among them the Newport\, Winnipeg\, Rocky Mountain\, Calgary\, Ottawa\, and Falcon Ridge Folk festivals\, the Kate Wolf Music Festival\, and Australia’s Woodford Folk and Mullum Music Festivals\, Mountain Stage\, Boston’s Symphony Hall\, Nashville’s Lyman Auditorium\, The Barns at Wolftrap\, and a private party for his veterinarian where there was terrific lo-mein. \nMost recently he’s been the opener of choice for Mad About You/Stranger Things star Paul Reiser’s stand-up shows (50 +) for the last 7 years\, along with his own busy acoustic music touring and coaching schedule. That current schedule includes Vance’s Monday Night Acoustic Pajama Party on YouTube. Having started the first week of the pandemic in 2020\, Vance has played a live\, themed\, weekly 90 minute mixed bag of originals and cover tunes to a rotating following of about 200 folks. 10 to 20% of his weekly tip jar is donated to a local 501(c)3 of his choice. At the time of this writing\, having done 155 of these shows has become newsworthy in itself. \nGilbert has been a songwriting\, performance\, and voice coach all around the world\, kinda\, from Australia to Winnipeg\, at all the festivals above plus The Kerrville and Rocky Mountain Song Schools\, he is currently on staff as Instructor/Professor at the University Of Colorado Denver and has a decade worth of summer programs at the Berklee College Of Music under his belt. What? Private coaching? Yes\, 6-10 students weekly too. \nConsidered by many to be an integral part of the national folk scene\, his previous record “Good Good Man” features an eclectic roster of musical types including rocker Mike Posner\, world renown Celtic harpist Aine Minough\, bluesman Chris Smither\, and Al Green’s organist Stacey Wade. \nGilbert runs 3 to 4 miles ever so slowly 5 days a week to stay sharp for the road and does historical aviation research and model building just for great nerdy fun. \nHe even has a tune on a Grammy Nominated children’s album. How rounded is that?

There will  be more story telling than most shows.\nWe had such a good time last April even though it was cold and wet across the street\, we are doing it again.\n\nBill Harley is well-traveled\, well-read\, well-educated\, well-spoken and well-loved. Accompanied by his guitar\, his narrative songs and stories\, both original and traditional\, are a celebration of our common humanity. Best known for his work with children and families\, his ability to navigate through a confusing world with humor and wisdom is evident in his masterful storytelling as well as his numerous award-winning recordings and books. A two-time Grammy winner\, he is vibrant\, outrageous\, unpredictable and genuine with songs and stories about growing up\, schooling and what it is to be human—our connections with one another and with the planet we share. Recognized by audiences and peers as one of the finest performing storytellers in the country\, his work has influenced a generation of children\, parents\, performing artists and educators. Bill tours internationally as a performing artist\, author and keynote speaker from his home in Seekonk\, Massachusetts.\n\n\nDon White- There is no one-word description for what Don White does. He has survived and thrived for more than twenty years\, bringing his audiences to laughter and tears in his live performances\, studio recordings\, and on the printed page. Opening the show\, Rowley\, MA native\, Sean Godbout will be performing an acoustic set of originals and 1970’s era soft rock songs from artists like Lucinda Williams\, and Bob Dylan.
