SUMMARY:Monica Rizzio - Jan. 17\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:A bonfire on a beach. A couple of days with the one you love. Simply doing…nothing. The little joys in life. Americana singer-songwriter Monica Rizzio’s new album\, Sunshine Is Free\, is all about the simple things that make it all worth it. The concept for Sunshine Is Free was born on the road\, as Rizzio spent time under open skies while touring. Realizing she needed to step outside of a New England winter to write the follow-up to 2016’s Washashore Cowgirl\, Rizzio spent the fall of 2018 traveling from her home in Cape Cod to Nashville for writing sessions. Over a week in April at Skinny Elephant Recording\, she and producer Michael Rinne (Caroline Spence\, Erin Rae & The Meanwhiles\, Kelsey Waldon) as well as a stacked lineup of guest musicians including Mindy Smith\, Maya de Vitry\, Gwen Sebastian\, Joe Pisapia\, Will Kimbrough\, and Eamon McLoughlin\, Rizzio created a collection that focuses on finding joy in simpler things and looking for the silver lining of difficult situations. \nTitle track “Sunshine Is Free” is an upbeat number\, expanded by an infectious bass line and a rollicking banjo. The Boot says the song is “a reminder of the beautiful\, happiness-inducing parts of life\, from the free to the pricey\, the minuscule to the massive.” “Nothin’” romanticizes a perfect day without a to-do list\, spent reading Hemingway and sipping on a glass of wine. Billboard noted the track’s “delicate acoustic guitar\, steady percussion\, soaring electric guitar parts and warm vocals.” The upbeat rocker “Story of My New Year” showcases Rizzio’s versatility as a singer and declares that as a new year rolls in\, the future is boundless. Wide Open Country shined an early spotlight on “My Sweet Heart\,” a love song advising a younger self whose heart is aching. \nRizzio collaborated with longtime friend Mindy Smith for the first time on “While With You\,” with PopMatters noting that the “love song [sinks] into its soothing groove early\, with beautiful mandolin-driven instrumentation filling the spaces between the layered serenity of Rizzio and Smith’s vocal performance.” Featuring a Jerry Garcia-esque electric guitar\, “The Shire” perfectly captures the ethos of The Berkshires in Western Massachusetts\, where it was written. Growing up in a small town in East Texas\, Rizzio did what many people do in such settings: she learned to sing gospel hymns in church and received an education in classic country music\, listening to Willie Nelson\, Buck Owens\, Connie Francis and Dolly Parton. “Don’t Keep Me Up Waiting” is a waltz inspired by years of endlessly spinning Willie Nelson’s Red Headed Stranger album\, premiered by The Bluegrass Situation. “Little Bit of Truth” centers around an eye-opening 30 days during Washashore Cowgirl’s album release tour\, which found her reconciling evangelical childhood lessons with her current beliefs. On “Sunday” she examines the intricacies of a relationship gone wrong — the track focuses on her faith and how that’s changed since she was a child. \nThroughout Sunshine Is Free\, it’s clear Rizzio has a keen ability to connect; her songs are often autobiographical\, yet delivered through a fictional approach that creates a universal experience for the listener — whether expressed using her trademark sense of humor or with such striking honesty that the pain in her voice is tangible. \n“Left with no choice to go my own way\, out here looking for a little bit of truth\,” she sings\, and you can bet she’ll be happy to share the lessons she’s learned soon.

SUMMARY:The Kennedys - Nov. 15\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Kennedys release their first CD of all newly minted original songs in five years! \n“If you get a charge from a rich folk rock vibe\, love a super sharp guitar lick\, or appreciate a moving story song\, you will find all of that on The Kennedy’s Headwinds. Pete Kennedy’s astonishing range on any guitar he touches deftly underpins every mood of Maura Kennedy’s warm\, lyrical voice. You’ll get no resistance from these Headwinds\, only pleasure.” \n– Marilyn Rea Beyer\, Host\, WFMT’s The Midnight Special & Folkstage \nSongwriting duo Pete and Maura Kennedy make a strong return to the studio and stage after three years of weekly live-streamed lockdown-era concerts. They took the opportunity to explore classic songwriting in depth\, performing over a thousand songs during the pandemic. That vast overview strengthened and refined their own writing and laid the foundation for this new collection of original\, socially-conscious songs. \n“After such a deep dive into American roots music\, we felt like we had a new set of writing tools. We were ready to create this body of work\, and there’s just SO much to write about\,” says Maura. “During our five-year hiatus from writing and recording\, America changed in massive ways\, divisive ways that have shaken our whole foundation. That has to be addressed by creative artists\, those of us who have a voice to speak for others. Our love of the great things about this country\, things that are under threat\, is the reason we decided to make “Headwinds” the title track of the CD. Political and social headwinds are making it hard to get back “home’ to our greatness as a nation. We want to push back in a positive way against those winds.” \nIn addition to singing and writing\, Pete and Maura are multi-instrumentalists. The thirteen songs are cast in a soundscape that draws from the classic canon of American roots\, in keeping with the theme of getting back “home” as a nation. Acoustic and electric guitars\, a vintage steel guitar\, a gospel-inflected piano/organ mix\, and even a slide ukulele all add colors to a songbag of sounds that have drawn us together during hard times. Pete and Maura believe that those sounds still have the power to pull us through again. \nThe Kennedys began their writing and touring life three decades ago as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, developing their own sound as a frequent support act on Nanci’s tours across America\, Ireland\, Scotland and England. Collaborations with Nanci continued\, culminating in Pete and Maura producing her final album\, “Intersections.” Along the way\, they hosted a nationwide radio program\, “The Dharma Cafe” on Sirius/XM\, wrote and released sixteen CDs of original music\, and have been core artists on folk radio\, expanding their audience further with the inception of the AAA and Americana formats.

SUMMARY:James Keelaghan with David Woodhead
DESCRIPTION:Admission: $30 (17 and under free)\nParking can be tricky – check this map!  parking guidance \nYou can pay with cash at the door or purchase advance tickets. \nContemporary folk songs\, at their very best\, offer an insight into the hardships\, attitudes\, and resolve of characters and events that shape our day-to-day lives. You can dress these songs up in inspired arrangements and intricate instrumentation but\, at their very essence\, the archetypal folk song is all about stories. Stories and people. Something such compelling songwriters as Eric Bogle\, Si Kahn\, Ewan MacColl\, and Stan Rogers … all understood and mined so effectively. \nJames Keelaghan\, too\, burrows into that same rich seam with equal ability and comparable conviction. To quote Eric Bibb\, the award-winning American acoustic bluesman\, after listening to Keelaghan perform: “[You’re] a joy to hear\, just beautiful.  Reminded me of the best of the best of another time – Liam Clancy\, Tom Paxton etcetera.” Less colourful but more succinct\, Dave Marsh\, the eminent Rolling Stone critic\, simply described Keelaghan as “Canada’s finest songwriter.” \nTruly\, throughout a career that now spans almost four decades\, the Juno and Canadian Folk Music Award winner has created a repertoire of incalculable importance – a unique body of work\, either inspired by or drawn from the folk tradition. Ten solo albums flush with enduring lyrical relevance. Take the beautiful but heartbreaking ballad\, Jenny Bryce\, for example. From any point of view\, it’s indistinguishable from the numerous traditional tracks covered on his disc A Few Simple Verses. \nWhat’s more\, various other originals from the Keelaghan cannon  must surely enter the domain of traditional folklore. Most notably\, Small Rebellions (highlighting the 1931 slaughter of peaceful striking miners in Bienfait\, SK); Hillcrest Mine (a prelude to the worst coal mining disaster in Canadian history); Kiri’s Piano (a triumph over adversity amidst the shameful\, racist treatment of Japanese-Canadians during WW II); Cold Missouri Waters (a harrowing portrait of the 1949 Mann Gulch Fire in the mountains of Montana) … \nA relentless musical spirit\, Keelaghan has surrounded himself with a variety of crackerjack companions down through the years that have largely included the late\, innovative\, free-spirited fiddler and composer\, Oliver Schroer\, the exuberant\, Chilean\, Latino-fusionist guitarist\, Oscar Lopez (with whom Keelaghan made two albums under the banner of Compadres)\, or the ubiquitous\, former Spirit of the West anchor and multi-instrumentalist\, Hugh MacMillan. Scrupulous audiences from Alberta to Australia bared witness to the sum of these resourceful parts. \nJames Keelaghan grew up in a bungalow in northwest Calgary\, AB\, with six siblings\, an Irish father\, and an English mum. His brother Bob would develop into a noteworthy guitarist with the excellent\, but now defunct\, Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir. From his father\, Jim\, James developed a love of history. The family record collection provided further inspiration. Traditional folk LPs by the likes of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem\, Séan Ó Riada\, and Harry Belafonte certainly caught young Keelaghan’s ear. He still cites Belafonte At Carnegie Hall as a recording that changed his life at age six! \nAppearing on over 250 recording projects\, bass player David Woodhead has worked with many influential artists including Perth County Conspiracy\, Stan Rogers\, Don Ross\, Oliver Schroer\, Loreena McKennitt\, Gil Scott-Heron\, Steve Rodby\, and David Sanborn. David has been described as “that musician who leads from in front and behind as the situation demands and seems happiest planting various challenges and musical surprises in a spirit of playfulness.” (Jowi Taylor\, CBC radio host)

SUMMARY:Kossoy Sisters with Kate Seeger and Dean Spencer
DESCRIPTION:Newton Corner\, MA\n$20 at the door ($5 for students)\nReservations required: HouseConcerts@fssgb.org \nThe Kossoy Sisters\, Irene Saletan and Ellen Christenson\, performed at the first Newport Folk Festival\, sang in the original Production of Woody Guthrie’s Bound for Glory\, and recorded their legendary Bowling Green for Tradition Records. They are known for their clear belllike harmonies\, which have inspired and influenced other singers. Although they sing mostly southern mountain songs\, they have also adopted other traditional and contemporary songs\, as well as written some of their own. \nIrene and Ellen began singing in harmony at the age of 8 or 9\, singing mostly what they heard around the house: songs of the 20’s and music hall songs. In their early teenage years\, they became immersed in traditional songs and became part of the music scene in Washington Square in Greenwich Village. By the age of 20\, they had performed widely in New York. In addition to Newport\, the Kossoy Sisters performed at many other festivals and coffee houses\, including the Fox Hollow Festival\, University of Chicago Folk Festival\, and the Eisteddfod in eastern Massachusetts. In 1997\, Bowling Green was reissued as a CD by Rykodisc. The Kossoys resumed performing for the Folk Song Society of Greater Boston\, the Folklore Society of Greater Washington\, the Pinewoods Folk Music Club of New York\, and participated in the Truly Acoustic Folk Festival in Cambridge\, MA and the Summer Solstice Festival in southern California\, among others. In 2001\, the Coen Brothers included the Kossoy Sisters’ version of “I’ll Fly Away” in their movie\, O Brother\, Where Art Thou. Their album Hop on Pretty Girls was released in the fall of 2002.

SUMMARY:Terry Kitchen in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Terry Kitchen is a musical storyteller\, and more.  Award-winning Boston singer/songwriter Terry Kitchen pares songwriting to its most essential – a voice\, a guitar\, a story\, a glimmer of hope.  Whether in concert or on record\, Kitchen brings his songs to life with gentle wisdom\, a sharp eye for detail\, and unexpected humor.  Boston Globe critic Scott Alarik states “Terry tackles tough personal subjects with generosity of vision.”  His latest album ‘We All Dream’ is an intimate portrait of who we are at this critical moment\, and why we all need each other.  As the title song says\, we may be tired and beaten up\, but we keep trying\, and we change the world when we all dream!

SUMMARY:Janie Meneely and Rob van Sante House Concert
DESCRIPTION:Reservations required: send email to HouseConcerts@fssgb.org.  $20 cash at the door (students $5\, 17 and under free) \nMeneely & van Sante present an evening of music as lively as it is eclectic\, with songs culled from maritime traditions old and new mixed with contemporary ballads about the ways of today’s world. \nJanie Meneely and Rob van Sante began coalescing as a duo in 2015\, with Rob offering support on Janie’s solo gigs whenever he was in the Washington\, D.C. area\, where she was living at the time. As a prolific songwriter of all things Chesapeake\, Janie was a well-known figure around the mid-Atlantic waterfront\, but it was Rob’s brilliant guitar work and harmony singing that really pushed her work into the greater realm of the traditional folk world where Rob had already made his mark. \nWhile Janie had stayed “local” throughout her musical career\, Rob had traveled the world\, first as a touring artist in his own right\, and then as back-up musician/sideman for\, primarily\, Alan Reid (co-founder and chief songwriter of the Battlefield Band from Scotland) and John Conolly (beloved raconteur of songs and stories pertaining to Grimsby\, among them the now-classic Fiddler’s Green). He played for festivals\, concert halls\, private living rooms and pubs in Britain\, Ireland\, China\, Australia\, New Zealand\, Canada\, the United States\, Germany\, Russia\, Japan . . . . this list goes on. Known for his trademark guitar style—primarily using alternate tunings—Rob remains a sought-after accompanist and session musician. \nProbably the most exciting element of the duo is the collaborative aspect of their latest compositions. Janie’s lyrics buoyed by Rob’s arrangements reflect a sensitive and compelling grasp of contemporary concerns\, whether it be anti-immigration policies (Lady Liberty) or the simple reminder that we set an example for future generations (For the Love of It All). But just as often\, their songs—and their on-stage banter\, for that matter—are laced with humor (sometimes bawdy!) and spill out with galvanizing energy (Whitby Ale). \nWhether they sing of long-ago tragedy\, retell a campfire ghost story or offer up a song of social justice\, their music invites audience participation\, and that\, to their mind\, remains the most gratifying aspect of any given performance.
