DESCRIPTION:Showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Folk Collective\, normally at Club at Passim in Cambridge\, MA\, is an initiative focused on empowering diverse folk artists across New England by using music as a catalyst for community impact and social change. The Collective operates on a two-year\, cohort-based model\, specifically designed to address the unique challenges faced by underrepresented artists in the folk music scene. Through this model\, participants receive performance opportunities\, mentorship\, and collaborative space\, all aimed at helping them cultivate sustainable\, creative careers. \nThe Collective serves not only the artists themselves but also the wider New England community by broadening the reach of folk music and making it more accessible. Success for the Folk Collective is measured through various metrics\, including audience attendance\, diversity of participants\, engagement levels at events\, social media interactions\, and feedback from artists and the community. Partners supporting the initiative include institutions like Berklee College of Music\, the Cambridge Arts Council\, and the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation\, among others. \nARTISTS FOR THE MARCH 15 SHOW WILL INCLUDE: \nAlastair Moock is an award-winning singer-songwriter; a Grammy-nominated family musician; social justice and songwriting educator for all ages; and co-founder of The Opening Doors Project\, an anti-racist music organization. The Boston Globe calls him “one of the town’s best and most adventurous songwriters\,” and The Washington Post says\, “every song is a gem.” \nAnju is a singer\, songwriter\, producer\, and performer shaped by the people and places in Minnesota and Massachusetts. Their music conjures imaginary lovers\, scents of citrus\, and visions of hairy brown skin under the sun. Anju was highlighted by NPR’s All Songs Considered as an outstanding Tiny Desk Contest entrant. They are currently teaching young musicians piano\, violin\, and guitar and working on their debut full-length album. \nLydia “LovelySinger” Harrell is one of Boston’s musical treasures. Her sultry\, soulful voice and evocative songwriting have garnered her the attention and respect of the nation’s finest musicians and venues. Jazz and soul are where her heart is; however\, Harrell has shown an unbreakable ability to mold herself into any musical situation. Whether performing with the Boston Pops\, serenading NBA fans with America’s national anthem\, or lending her vocal talents to chart-topping deep house singles by British record label Reel People Music\, Harrell’s dedication to extracting the pure essence of the song is unmatched. In addition to her accomplishments as a musical artist\, Lydia is a film/TV\, voiceover\, and theatre actress. \nAward-winning multi-digital media artist\, musician\, organizer & filmmaker Cliff Notez’s art is a continuous exploration of the black mind. Rooted in hip-hop\, their art tackles the political and the personal\, exploring the intimate consequences of a society where black bodies are easily ignored\, forgotten\, or disregarded. In 2018 they took home Best New Artist at the Boston Music Awards\, and in 2020\, Cliff became the first musician to be named “Musician of the Year” for Boston Magazine’s 100 Most Influential Bostonians. Cliff’s Second full-length album\, Why The Wild Things Are\, was released on September 11th\, 2019. \nAward-winning Tlingit artist Kim Moberg was born in Juneau\, Alaska\, and currently calls Cape Cod\, MA home. Kim began playing guitar at age 14\, but severe stage fright kept her from becoming a professional performer. In 2014 Kim set out to overcome her stage fright and wrote her first song. Kim teamed with Grammy-nominated producer Jon Evans to record two albums: “Above Ground” and “Up Around The Bend.” Both have received worldwide airplay\, charting on the Folk Alliance International Folk DJ charts and the NACC Radio charts. Kim and Jon are collaborating on her third album\, which features songs that tie ancient prophecies to our current social environment. Kim’s recognitions include the 2021 Rocky Mountain Songwriting Contest Finalist\, the 2021 Great American Songwriting Contest Folk/Americana Finalist\, and the 2020 CT Folk Grassy Hill Songwriting Competition Winner.

Whether performing solo or with Americana darlings Red Molly\, her tales of love and loss\, both gritty and sweet\, are propelled by her impeccable slide guitar chops.\n\nAs an award-winning songwriter\, captivating vocalist\, and a world-class lap style dobro player\, she has an unmistakable sound all her own. This is masterfully captured on her 2022 CD “DobroSinger.” The record made it to #11 on the Billboard Blues Charts and #2 on the Folk DJ Charts\, receiving rave reviews in Bluegrass Unlimited\, Acoustic Guitar Magazine and American Songwriter. DESCRIPTION:FSSGB is pleased to present “Bound for Glory”\, our Woody Guthrie Tribute show! The show features many FSSGB members and friends\, many of whom have performed in past Woody shows going way back to the 60’s. \nAdmission: $10 for all at the door (children 17 and under are free) \n“Bound for Glory” is a performance of songs and stories about the life of Woodrow Wilson (“Woody”) Guthrie\, considered by many to be the founder of modern American folk music. Many wonderful songs written by Woody and performed by members of FSSGB are interspersed with short recitations from his autobiography. It is a funny\, cynical\, earthy and tragic account of his life in an Oklahoma oil-boom town\, of the Depression that followed\, and of his subsequent travels in\, on\, and under trains\, in stolen cars and on his feet\, round an America going rotten from the top downwards. \nChorus sheets are made available and the audience is encouraged to sing along. \nRefreshments will be served at intermission. \nParking: there are small lots on either side of the church\, and there’s some on-street parking in the neighborhood. We’re allowed to park at the middle school next door (75 Church St)\, and there’s a municipal lot at the intersection of Church St and Rt 20 (one block south of the church).

DESCRIPTION:Reservations required: send email to HouseConcerts@fssgb.org.  $20 cash at the door (students $5\, 17 and under free) \nMeneely & van Sante present an evening of music as lively as it is eclectic\, with songs culled from maritime traditions old and new mixed with contemporary ballads about the ways of today’s world. \nJanie Meneely and Rob van Sante began coalescing as a duo in 2015\, with Rob offering support on Janie’s solo gigs whenever he was in the Washington\, D.C. area\, where she was living at the time. As a prolific songwriter of all things Chesapeake\, Janie was a well-known figure around the mid-Atlantic waterfront\, but it was Rob’s brilliant guitar work and harmony singing that really pushed her work into the greater realm of the traditional folk world where Rob had already made his mark. \nWhile Janie had stayed “local” throughout her musical career\, Rob had traveled the world\, first as a touring artist in his own right\, and then as back-up musician/sideman for\, primarily\, Alan Reid (co-founder and chief songwriter of the Battlefield Band from Scotland) and John Conolly (beloved raconteur of songs and stories pertaining to Grimsby\, among them the now-classic Fiddler’s Green). He played for festivals\, concert halls\, private living rooms and pubs in Britain\, Ireland\, China\, Australia\, New Zealand\, Canada\, the United States\, Germany\, Russia\, Japan . . . . this list goes on. Known for his trademark guitar style—primarily using alternate tunings—Rob remains a sought-after accompanist and session musician. \nProbably the most exciting element of the duo is the collaborative aspect of their latest compositions. Janie’s lyrics buoyed by Rob’s arrangements reflect a sensitive and compelling grasp of contemporary concerns\, whether it be anti-immigration policies (Lady Liberty) or the simple reminder that we set an example for future generations (For the Love of It All). But just as often\, their songs—and their on-stage banter\, for that matter—are laced with humor (sometimes bawdy!) and spill out with galvanizing energy (Whitby Ale). \nWhether they sing of long-ago tragedy\, retell a campfire ghost story or offer up a song of social justice\, their music invites audience participation\, and that\, to their mind\, remains the most gratifying aspect of any given performance.

Many were written by Curt’s whose father served in the Navy. The concert will also feature them singing  favorite songs and stories from their other recordings. \n Curt Bessette is an award winning singer songwriter who has performed across the United States in concerts and festivals. Jenn Kurtz is celebrated as an amazing harmony singer and arranger and is always available to answer questions about her home state of Missouri.   \n Veterans might remember Curt and Jenn were here at Temple Emmanuel with their Veteran’s program with funds donated to the building of Wakefield Veteran’s Memorial.    Curt and Jenn have a new song of theirs called\, “I’m Not Me Anymore” about PTSD.  Part of the proceeds will be donated to Veteran service organizations.  \nAdmission is $25\,  $10 for those under 18.  VETERANS also $10. DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present our third and final of three Summer Showcases on Saturday\, August 16 at 4 PM in the Gazebo at Ipswich River Park\, located at 15 Central Street in North Reading. The performers are Ric Page as well as 4 first-timers – Kristen Harlov\, Tom Hanlon with Leslie Bryant and Peter LaGuerre. They represent a group of very talented musicians with a nice variety of music which will make for a very entertaining show. Each performer will do about a 30 minute set.The event is free but donations will be gratefully accepted. All the proceeds go to the Friends of the Flint Memorial Library in North Reading with whom we will be doing these concerts in conjunction with\, to help support the library.\nThe event will also be livestreamed on the North Reading Community Coffeehouse Facebook page and on the YouTube channel the following day! DESCRIPTION:Cambridge\, MA\n$20 at the door ($5 for students)\nReservations required: HouseConcerts@fssgb.org \nBorn in Québec and raised in Maine\, Josée Vachon shares her Franco-American upbringing through traditional and contemporary folksongs from Québec and Acadia and through her own compositions. \nShe began singing publicly with the support of the Franco-American Center at the University of Maine\, where she discovered others who shared her rich heritage. She quickly gained recognition as a new Franco-American voice through early performances at state festivals in Maine and at schools and parish soirées. \nIn July 1993\, she co-founded the folk group Chanterelle with award-winning fiddler Donna Hébert and singer/guitarist Liza Constable.  Ms Vachon has 12 solo recordings to her credit\, and continues to perform and record the music that best represents her love of Franco-American culture.

DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present an evening with the Cataldo and Clark Quartet on Saturday\, September 12 at 7:30 PM (doors open at 7 PM).  The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is located in the Activity Room at the Flint Memorial Library\, 147 Park St\, North Reading\, MA. There is a suggested donation of $10 and seats can be reserved by emailing Nrcoffeehouse@gmail.com.  A portion of the money raised will go to the Friends of the Flint Memorial Library to help support the many programs and activities offered by the Library. \nThe Cataldo & Clark Quartet was formed in 2020 as an acoustic duo of Michael Cataldo and Scotty Ray Clark\, performing original songs written by lead singer Michael Cataldo. Their repertoire also includes soulful interpretations by artists ranging from Ray Charles\, Marvin Gaye\, Leon Russell\, Bonnie Raitt\, and Bob Dylan. DESCRIPTION:Cambridge\, MA\n$20 at the door ($5 for students)\nReservations required: HouseConcerts@fssgb.org \nSteve Turner is known as a pioneer of highly sophisticated English concertina song accompaniments\, stretching the boundaries of traditional forms\, with one of the best voices in the business. He is a multi-instrumentalist\, who also accompanies himself on the cittern\, and also plays mandolin and tenor banjo. \nSteve began his career on the Manchester\, UK folk scene at the end of the ‘60s\, with the Geordie band “Canny Fettle”\, touring with them for eight years and making two albums with them. \nIn 1979 he won the UK Melody Maker’s national “Stars of the 80s” competition\, which persuaded him to turn professional\, and for the next 12 years he toured solo\, nationally and internationally\, releasing four albums with Fellside Records during this period (Out Stack\, Jigging One Now\, Eclogue and Braiding). \nAfter 13 years away from the folk scene he made a welcome return in 2004 performing in folk clubs and festivals\, and in 2008 producing his 5th album\, the highly acclaimed “Whirligig of Time” which featured UK luminaries Martin Carthy\, Nancy Kerr and Miranda Sykes. \nSince then he has released further albums\, “Rim of the Wheel” \, “Spirit of the Game” and “Late Cut”\, and his latest much anticipated 9th album “Curious Times” featuring Martin Carthy was be released in Spring 2023.
