SUMMARY:Sara Grey and Kieron Means House Concert
DESCRIPTION:General admission: $20\, $5 for students \nConcert will be held in a private home in Brookline MA.\nReservations required: email HouseConcerts@fssgb.org for reservations and directions. \nSara Grey is one of the most gifted and knowledgeable artists working in the field of traditional music. Sara’s singing is both powerful and sweet\, with a distinctive and lovely tremolo. It is a voice well suited to native American songs and ballads of Ireland and Scotland. \nIt is not Sara’s lovely voice alone that makes her one of the most popular singers on the folk scene; on many of her songs Sara accompanies herself by frailing a five string banjo and\, when playing dance tunes\, it is obvious why she is regarded as one of the foremost exponents of the clawhammer style. As well as singing and playing\, Sara is well known for her storytelling – specialising in stories from New England where she grew up learning many of her stories from her father. \nSara grew up in New Hampshire but has lived in North Carolina\, Ohio\, Montana\, New York\, Pennsylvania\, Arizona\, Wales\, Scotland and England. As a youngster in North Carolina she developed a love for old time songs and banjo music. She cites Kyle Creed as the chief influence on her understated\, syncopated clawhammer banjo style. She has now been performing professionally for more than 30 years. \n\n“She is one of a select band of performers who still breathe life into traditional ballads.” Vic Smith\, Folk Roots\n“Sara Grey has quietly and powerfully taken over the mantle of premier interpreter of American traditional music.” Tor Jonassen\, WRDV\n\nKieron Means is a singer primarily of traditional songs but also of contemporary songs and guitar player of great merit. He has a great rapport with an audience and has an exceptional professionalism for a young performer. His voice is as smooth as silk\, rich and mellow and he sings to his audience not in spite of them. \nKieron is the son of the traditional singer Sara Grey and music journalist Andrew Means\, one time writer for Melody Maker. He was born in the United States and grew up in Britain gaining a great love of the music of both traditions as well as the contemporary scene. He has become a performer of traditional songs from the US and from the UK and many of the contemporary songs he sings he has written himself. \nHe has toured in the States and often performed with Sara Grey. In 2000 he has performed at Whitby and Wadebridge festivals where he was received with much acclaim. His first CD has received much praise with air play on Travelling Folk and Mr Anderson’s Fine Tunes both on radio Scotland. An article on him will shortly be appearing in Folk Roots magazine.

The genre-bending trio — Margo Hennebach\, Adrienne Jones and Mark Saunders—creates an exciting\, inclusive performance\, delivering new original songs\, selections from their thirteen album catalog\, storytelling and impromptu vocal improv. \nIn their current iteration\, the trio primarily uses one microphone around which they form and re-form\, early-radio style. Their ease with one another on stage invites the audience into their world of human connection and spontaneous fun. Well-crafted instrumentation – using guitars\, mandolin\, ukulele\, piano\, melodica\, an inventive keyboard and three-part harmonies as tight as jeans from the dryer – enthralls audiences again and again.

DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present another event in its continuing Performing Artist Series.  This event features Mark Bishop Evans and Kirsten Manville.  Mary Ann McAllister will open.  The event starts at 7 PM and doors open at 6:30.  There is a suggested donation of $15.  Like all our events\, this one is done in conjunction with the Friends of the Flint Memorial Library in North Reading.  A portion of the suggested donation goes to the Friends to help support the library.  This event will partially be sponsored by the North Reading Chapter of the Massachusetts Cultural Council. We are located in the Activity Room of the Flint Memorial Library at 147 Park Street in North Reading.  There is plenty of free parking.  Please come\, sit back\, relax and listen to some terrific music!  If you have any questions\, please contact Art Grossman at NRCoffeehouse@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:l'Esperance Mandolin Ensemble Concert
DESCRIPTION:The l’Esperance Mandolin Ensemble\, features musicians from Massachusetts\, New York\, Rhode Island and Connecticut of different backgrounds and ages who come together for the pleasure of making music!  This diverse ensemble\, sometimes up to 17 musicians\,  play mandolins\, mandolas\, octave mandolins\, mandocellos\, mandobass and guitar!  This versatile\, intimate instrument readily lends its voice from classical to contemporary\, from bluegrass\, Celtic\, American Traditional to Klezmer\, from pop classics to Baroque\, and l’Esperance will do it all!  L’Esperance has been sharing the joy of the mandolin with audiences around New England since 1994.  This is a rare\, all-acoustic concert that we’re pleased to present at the South Shore Folk Music Club!
