We’re back! \nNow that it is ‘fall-ish’ another music event is planned for our 45th season at the South Shore Folk Music Club (SSFMC).\nThe first Coffeehouse is Fri Sep 22 2023\nDoors open at 630p\nShow starts at 7p\, goes till 915p\nFirst Parish Duxbury\n842 Tremont St (Rte 3A)\nDuxbury MA\nCoffeehouse Feature:  Fred Meltzer  \nFred Meltzer has been performing and recording originals\, covers and tribute music for over 40 years.  His band Free Range has featured at SSFMC in the past.  Fred has played his silly and thoughtful originals for the past several years and his project\, Waxy Shellac and The Tasteless Apples\, is currently recording their inaugural album “Shelf Life” at Ultrasound Productions in Hanover MA.  Looks for it soon on line and in person with a booklet illustrating how all the decades of hits were inspired!  Maybe Fred will be inspired to preview a couple at our first coffeehouse of the season! \nOpener Fran Araujo and Friends: \nFran Araujo is a musician who has been performing for about 12 years. Her musical roots begin with her paternal grandmother in Ireland. She was influenced in childhood by her parents’ Mitch Miller records\, and then was enchanted with the folk music of the 60s’s\, especially with the close harmony of popular groups of the time.  She appreciates and enjoys performing old time and bluegrass.  Fran takes great pleasure in singing and playing with others and believes music is deeply healing.\n\nWe also hope you’ll share your Talent at the OPEN MIC!

DESCRIPTION:First Church Friday Coffee House presents its second concert of the 2023-2024 season featuring singer-songwriters Tom Smith and Cosy Sheridan in the Parish Hall at First Church and Parish Dedham\, 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, October 20\, 2023 at 7:30 pm in the Parish House. There will be refreshments for purchase. Tickets are $15 available at the door or online at Home | dedhamuu.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nTom Smith’s songs are in turns humorous\, touching\, thought provoking\, and inspiring. Deeply rooted in the old-school folk tradition\, his stories are told in a voice that is honest\, melodic\, and sincere. In the words of Boston radio DJ\, Dave Palmater\, “Tom writes songs that seem like they’ve always been there… a true folksinger.” Tom grew up in rural Pennsylvania in a family where music was part of the fabric of everyday life. A folk veteran of over forty years\, Tom performs at festivals\, coffeehouses\, schools\, and concerts throughout the Northeastern to audiences large and small\, young and old.  Accompanied on multiple instruments by New England folk veteran Seth Connelly\, you are sure to leave their performance feeling better than when you arrived. Cosy Sheridan has been called one of the era’s finest and most thoughtful songwriters. She first appeared on the national folk scene when she won the songwriting contests at The Kerrville Folk Festival and The Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 1992 and released her critically acclaimed CD Quietly Led. Backed by the strong rhythms and harmonies of her bass player Charlie Koch\, she plays a percussive bluesy style of guitar – often in open tunings and occasionally with two or more capos She has performed at Carnegie Hall\, The Cowgirl Hall of Fame and on the Jerry Lewis Telethon. She teaches classes in songwriting\, performance\, and guitar at workshops and adult music camps across the country. She is the director of Moab Folk Camp in Moab\, Utah. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes its choir at Sunday services\, Concerts at First Church and the Parish Players theater troupe in addition to our Friday Coffee House events.

In a short span\, he cemented his position as a fixture in the city’s thriving music scene. He has performed in venues as large as the Newport Folk Festival\, sharing the limelight with musical legends like Arlo Guthrie and Taj Mahal\, and last performed at the Rose Garden in 2008. The Boston Globe hailed him as a standout songwriter\, with his tunes striking a chord with listeners far and wide. \nIn 2006\, Moock’s career took a heartwarming turn toward family music after the birth of his twins. This shift resulted in a series of highly-praised albums\, a testament to his versatility and depth as a musician. Among his many accolades\, including a 2013 Grammy nomination. But his contributions extend beyond music. A steadfast advocate for social justice\, Moock has channeled his passion into pivotal initiatives. He co-founded The Opening Doors Project\, aiming to push forward racial conversations through the powerful medium of art. \nChandler Travis\, meanwhile\, embarked on his musical voyage in the 1970s. Making his mark as part of the duo\, Travis Shook and the Club Wow\, he garnered national attention and shared the stage with luminaries like George Carlin and Bonnie Raitt. Over the years\, Travis’s unique fusion of humor and soulful songwriting found expression in a range of musical endeavors\, from the Incredible Casuals to the Chandler Travis Philharmonic\, solidifying his legacy in the world of music.

At well over a million miles of roadwork\, including two stints as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, Pete and Maura Kennedy show no signs of slowing down either on tour or in the creative realm. \nSongwriting duo Pete and Maura Kennedy make a strong return to the studio and stage after three years of weekly live-streamed lockdown-era concerts. They took the opportunity to explore classic songwriting in depth\, performing over a thousand songs during the pandemic. That vast overview strengthened and refined their own writing and laid the foundation for this new collection of original\, socially-conscious songs. \n“After such a deep dive into American roots music\, we felt like we had a new set of writing tools. We were ready to create this body of work\, and there’s just SO much to write about\,” says Maura. “During our five-year hiatus from writing and recording\, America changed in massive ways\, divisive ways that have shaken our whole foundation. That has to be addressed by creative artists\, those of us who have a voice to speak for others. Our love of the great things about this country\, things that are under threat\, is the reason we decided to make “Headwinds” the title track of the CD. Political and social headwinds are making it hard to get back “home’ to our greatness as a nation. We want to push back in a positive way against those winds.” \nIn addition to singing and writing\, Pete and Maura are multi-instrumentalists. The thirteen songs are cast in a soundscape that draws from the classic canon of American roots\, in keeping with the theme of getting back “home” as a nation. Acoustic and electric guitars\, a vintage steel guitar\, a gospel-inflected piano/organ mix\, and even a slide ukulele all add colors to a songbag of sounds that have drawn us together during hard times. Pete and Maura believe that those sounds still have the power to pull us through again. \nThe Kennedys began their writing and touring life three decades ago as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, developing their own sound as a frequent support act on Nanci’s tours across America\, Ireland\, Scotland and England. Collaborations with Nanci continued\, culminating in Pete and Maura producing her final album\, “Intersections.” Along the way\, they hosted a nationwide radio program\, “The Dharma Cafe” on Sirius/XM\, wrote and released sixteen CDs of original music\, and have been core artists on folk radio\, expanding their audience further with the inception of the AAA and Americana formats.

There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $15 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe Ruth and Ben String Band plays electrifying old-time Appalachian music. Led by guitarist Ruth Rappaport and her fiddler son\, Ben Wetherbee\, the band’s repertoire includes rousing fiddle tunes and traditional\, modern\, and original songs that feature tight harmony singing. They are joined by clawhammer banjo player Joel Wennerstrom and upright bass player Michael Siegel.As a multi-generational four-piece band\, their musical influences are far reaching and include many genres–from Irish fiddle tunes and early country to punk. Ruth brings years of experience as a principal member of the ‘80’s and ’90’s all-woman old-time band from Boston\, “The Poodles\,” touring Europe and the US.  Her son Ben is following in Ruth’s footsteps with his musically diverse fiddle playing\, which has garnered much attention through his many performances in the area. Joel’s rhythmic and melodic banjo playing can be heard on recordings alongside members of the Punch Brothers and various Appalachian fiddle contest winners. You can find Michael playing in numerous Americana\, Bluegrass\, and old-time groups\, including Rachel Sumner’s “Traveling Light” band.  Together they make a highly entertaining quartet.  Hold onto your hats! This will be a lively show! Ruth and Ben have recently released new album\, “Newfangled Folk” and look forward to playing selections from the album at the show. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and the Concerts at First Church Saturday classical concert series\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events.

DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present Don White.  Don is equal parts storyteller-comedian-author-troubadour-folk singer-songwriter\, and has been bringing audiences to laughter and tears for 30 years. White’s arc as an award-winning songwriter and performer has taken him from his industrial hometown of Lynn\, MA across the country as hitchhiker\, through Boston’s comedy clubs and coffeehouses\, and onto the stage with greats like Arlo Guthrie\, Taj Mahal\, Ritchie Havens\, Patty Larkin\, Bill Morrissey\, Tom Rush\, Louden Wainwright III\, and Christine Lavin\, with whom he toured for 8 years all across North America in a co-bill called The Funny Side of the Street. At every point\, White has been the ultimate observer\, infusing his work with his experiences as a husband\, a father\, a seeker\, and a joker. In 2011\, he won the Jerry Christen Memorial Award\, given out by Boston Area Coffeehouse Association\, for his work with the community. The organization was founded in 1993 by a small group of individuals dedicated to the art of songwriting. As interest in the group grew\, so did the RISA membership. With growth came visibility and a broader mission – to establish a songwriting community that would not only nurture Rhode Island and Southeastern New England songwriters\, but showcase their many talents as writers\, musicians and performers. Having been a team since 2012\, their knack for transforming life’s challenges into lyrical narratives stands out. Their beautiful harmonies\, acoustic guitar work\, and warm stage presence have led them to perform alongside folk stalwarts like Livingston Taylor and Mark Erelli. Their latest album\, “Sure\,” was entirely produced by Eric\, and they’re set to release a related film in 2023. \nErin Ash Sullivan\, also rooted in Massachusetts\, presents a nuanced take on folk music. Rose Garden attendees will remember her as the winner of our 2023 Performing Songwriter Competition. Originally one-half of the folk pair\, Edith O.\, with Amy Speace\, Erin took time away for personal commitments before making a resonant return. Her 2021 solo debut\, “We Can Hear Each Other\,” found success\, particularly her track “Fireflies.” Gaining attention within the folk community\, her accolades include the Mark Erelli Judge’s Choice Award. Erin’s artistry\, often described as both delicate and evocative\, evokes comparisons to established artists\, notably Dar Williams.

DESCRIPTION:Antje returns to the Harmony on the Green stage after accompanying Catie Curtis at her show here back in May. The audience was delighted by her beautiful harmonies on Catie’s songs\, as well as her sharing a few of her own songs with us. We are thrilled to welcome her back! \nAntje has won some of the top songwriting awards including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and in one of the nation’s top music markets\, she won the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. Two of her albums found her working with Richard Shindell as producer\, as well as other “folk royalty” such as John Gorka\, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli. \nAntje has extensive touring experience\, criss-crossing the US and Europe many times. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined festivals in Scotland and Denmark. \nThe Bank of America featured Antje’s song “Merry Go Round” in a national TV advertising campaign\, including a Super Bowl audience. Neil Dorfsman\, producer for Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen and Sting says\, “When I first heard Antje I knew I was witnessing something very special. She creates an entire\, detailed world in verse\, and takes you there with beautiful and understated melody. Her songs are stunning paintings of color and shade and always generate the heat and light that real art should. In an unpoetic and ‘in your face’ world\, she is lyrical and subtle” \nAntje has played the TEDMED conference in San Diego. CNN said of the experience\, “Then\, this morning\, the tone of the conference turned from intellectual to deeply emotional when Antje Duvekot played her guitar and sang about her grandmother’s descent into Alzheimer’s disease. Duvekot’s song was all too relatable for those of us who have watched loved ones slip away. ‘And Anna tries to form a thought / But at the end she’s forgotten where she started from / There’s something she would like to say / But the words in her head seem to have got away’ she sang.” \nAntje’s most recent album\, New Wild West was released in September\, 2023.  \nOpening for Antje will be Eva Gertz. Eva is an eclectic artist of many mediums\, born and raised in Melrose\, MA where she started piano lessons at a young age. SUMMARY:North Reading Community Coffeehouse March Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present its March Showcase.  The performers are: Dolores Bourque with Ric Page\, Tom Sullivan and Uri Bourque\, David Buckman\, The Lakeside Boys – Gene Doughty and Phil Leavitt\, Mark Gaudet and Joanna Katzen .  Each performer will do about a 30 minute set. SUMMARY:WS Monroe & Friends at Stone Soup Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Many Stone Soup Coffeehouse attendees probably know WS Monroe\, or “Bill\,” as one of the dedicated sound people behind the big board at each of our shows. What they may not know is that Bill is also an accomplished musician and he will be performing for the first time in his own Stone Soup show on March 23\, 2024 at The Music Mansion\, 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906. Box Office opens at 6:00. Doors to the listening room open at 6:30. The show begins at 7 pm.\n\nMonroe has been playing music for more than 50 years. First influenced by the country music he heard as a child\, and then by the folk-rock of the Lovin’ Spoonful and the Byrds\, and by the folk revival of the ’60’s\, he began to attend the Philadelphia Folk Festival in 1969 where he was introduced to real traditional music. With all these influences (and some Beatles\, Motown\, blues\, and jazz)\, he performs what he calls “eclectic folk music”. He is mainly a singer\, and sometimes he just sings\, with no accompaniment. However\, when he first wanted to sing\, that option did not occur to him\, so he taught himself to play the guitar\, and then the mandolin\, and then the concertina and the mountain dulcimer. He usually performs solo\, but also plays with others: sometimes with his wife and children (now grown)\, and sometimes with Matteo Casini (who can do a lot of things he can’t do on the guitar)\, and sometimes with anyone who is willing to join him. More recently\, he has been a regular member of The Providence Wholebellies\, a wild and eclectic band\, and with the Quahog Quire\, an a cappella group that does work songs\, hymns\, children’s songs\, and more. More recently\, the Quire has produced an offshoot\, the Quahog Qafé\, which adds instrumentation to its usual mix. Tonight\, Bill will be accompanied by some of these talented friends.\n\nTickets are $22 and are available at the door or with reservation through our website.

SUMMARY:Putnam Murdock Coffeehouse - Karen Woodhall and David Jackson Open and Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:Feature – Putnam Murdock \nSteeped in old-time folk\, country and blues\, Putnam Murdock’s songwriting presents an honest voice of Americana music.  As a one-man band or a full ensemble\, the intimacy remains obvious in either his contemporary sonic collages or his classic ballads. His fourth studio release\, Long Time to Make Old Friends showcases songs penned with his co-songwriting partner and mentor\, Reed Foehl.\nAfter graduating with a songwriting degree from Berklee School in Music in 2002\, Murdock launched a solo career\, traveling the country.  As a songwriter he earned an honorable mention from the International Songwriting Competition for ‘Jersey Whiskey’ as well as having his debut record Fiction on the official ballot for the Grammys in five categories.\nPutnam has co-written songs that have appeared in the television shows Joan of Arcadia\, Dawsons Creek\, MTV’s Made\, and The Biggest Loser. The song ‘When it Comes Around’ was part of the movie sound track for Just Friends. He’s performed as a session musician on several Ken Burns documentaries including The Mayo Clinic with Bill Frisell and The Roosevelts:  An Intimate History.  Recently\, Murdock worked with the Ewers Brothers Film team to create music for the Mental Health Series which debuted on PBS in 2022.\nOpener – Karen Woodhall and David Jackson \n         Karen Woodhall does it all – contemporary folk\, with blues\, country and pop standards mixed in. Sometimes described vocally as “little-mama blues with a light brass to her sass\,” Karen brings a refreshing and joyful approach to her music\, with a natural and unassuming style that’s easy and accessible.  Karen is ably accompanied by David Jackson\, on guitar.\n         David Jackson plays in an energetic\, percussive style\, especially on his originals.  He collaborates with others or borrows from the great American songbook\, traditional\, old-time country\, folk\, swing\, fiddle tunes and blues.  David plays from all these influences\, ever cognizant of and grateful to carry the songs on as they`ve been passed on to him.  Together Karen Woodhall and David Jackson will open evening with their down-home style and musings.\n\nWe end the evening with a mini open mic – 8 slots. DESCRIPTION:The Honey Badgers are Erin Magnin and Michael Natrin. \nThe Honey Badgers are known for their intense\, unique harmonies\, their sincere lyrics and melodies\, and their undeniable onstage chemistry. Weaving their voices together over driving guitar\, wistful violin\, and punchy harmonica\, The Honey Badgers create a sound that is all at once heartfelt\, reflective\, eager\, and full of laid-back fun. The Honey Badgers have been creating music together since the summer of 2011. In their first several years working together they released their debut EP\, “Booth Bay”\, a thoughtfully crafted second EP\, “Soul”\, as well as a collection of live recordings entitled “Mad Season”. In the years following the duo’s conception\, they played all over their home state of Delaware and the surrounding area\, from the Delmarva Folk Festival in Hartly to the World Cafe Live at the Queen in Wilmington. \nCardboard Ox is Tracie Potochnik & Steve Allain \nWell-established as solo performers in their home state of Rhode Island\, Tracie Potochnik and Steve Allain joined forces in 2014 to form Cardboard Ox. The duo is known for sweet and soulful harmonies\, thoughtful musicianship\, and delicately crafted storytelling.Cardboard Ox has performed at venues throughout New England including the main stage at The Providence Folk Festival\, the Spire Center for the Performing Arts\, and the legendary Club Passim\, and has opened for acts including Cheryl Wheeler and Marc Douglas Berardo. The duo has also been nominated for Limelight and Motif Magazine awards.Cardboard Ox’s eponymous debut EP\, a collection of six original songs\, was recorded at Rhode Island’s Lion Recording Studio with engineer Ross Lenzing. The album features simple arrangements and production that capture the duo’s live sound\, and place focus firmly on the songs themselves. They have also released the dowload-only Cardboard Ox Presents: A Cardboard Ox Christmas (featuring Cardboard Ox)\, a holiday EP featuring three original songs and one Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers classic. They’re currently in the studio recording a full-length album.
