SUMMARY:WS Monroe & Friends at Stone Soup Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Many Stone Soup Coffeehouse attendees probably know WS Monroe\, or “Bill\,” as one of the dedicated sound people behind the big board at each of our shows. What they may not know is that Bill is also an accomplished musician and he will be performing for the first time in his own Stone Soup show on March 23\, 2024 at The Music Mansion\, 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906. Box Office opens at 6:00. Doors to the listening room open at 6:30. The show begins at 7 pm.\n\nMonroe has been playing music for more than 50 years. First influenced by the country music he heard as a child\, and then by the folk-rock of the Lovin’ Spoonful and the Byrds\, and by the folk revival of the ’60’s\, he began to attend the Philadelphia Folk Festival in 1969 where he was introduced to real traditional music. With all these influences (and some Beatles\, Motown\, blues\, and jazz)\, he performs what he calls “eclectic folk music”. He is mainly a singer\, and sometimes he just sings\, with no accompaniment. However\, when he first wanted to sing\, that option did not occur to him\, so he taught himself to play the guitar\, and then the mandolin\, and then the concertina and the mountain dulcimer. He usually performs solo\, but also plays with others: sometimes with his wife and children (now grown)\, and sometimes with Matteo Casini (who can do a lot of things he can’t do on the guitar)\, and sometimes with anyone who is willing to join him. More recently\, he has been a regular member of The Providence Wholebellies\, a wild and eclectic band\, and with the Quahog Quire\, an a cappella group that does work songs\, hymns\, children’s songs\, and more. More recently\, the Quire has produced an offshoot\, the Quahog Qafé\, which adds instrumentation to its usual mix. Tonight\, Bill will be accompanied by some of these talented friends.\n\nTickets are $22 and are available at the door or with reservation through our website.

SUMMARY:Putnam Murdock Coffeehouse - Karen Woodhall and David Jackson Open and Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:Feature – Putnam Murdock \nSteeped in old-time folk\, country and blues\, Putnam Murdock’s songwriting presents an honest voice of Americana music.  As a one-man band or a full ensemble\, the intimacy remains obvious in either his contemporary sonic collages or his classic ballads. His fourth studio release\, Long Time to Make Old Friends showcases songs penned with his co-songwriting partner and mentor\, Reed Foehl.\nAfter graduating with a songwriting degree from Berklee School in Music in 2002\, Murdock launched a solo career\, traveling the country.  As a songwriter he earned an honorable mention from the International Songwriting Competition for ‘Jersey Whiskey’ as well as having his debut record Fiction on the official ballot for the Grammys in five categories.\nPutnam has co-written songs that have appeared in the television shows Joan of Arcadia\, Dawsons Creek\, MTV’s Made\, and The Biggest Loser. The song ‘When it Comes Around’ was part of the movie sound track for Just Friends. He’s performed as a session musician on several Ken Burns documentaries including The Mayo Clinic with Bill Frisell and The Roosevelts:  An Intimate History.  Recently\, Murdock worked with the Ewers Brothers Film team to create music for the Mental Health Series which debuted on PBS in 2022.\nOpener – Karen Woodhall and David Jackson \n         Karen Woodhall does it all – contemporary folk\, with blues\, country and pop standards mixed in. Sometimes described vocally as “little-mama blues with a light brass to her sass\,” Karen brings a refreshing and joyful approach to her music\, with a natural and unassuming style that’s easy and accessible.  Karen is ably accompanied by David Jackson\, on guitar.\n         David Jackson plays in an energetic\, percussive style\, especially on his originals.  He collaborates with others or borrows from the great American songbook\, traditional\, old-time country\, folk\, swing\, fiddle tunes and blues.  David plays from all these influences\, ever cognizant of and grateful to carry the songs on as they`ve been passed on to him.  Together Karen Woodhall and David Jackson will open evening with their down-home style and musings.\n\nWe end the evening with a mini open mic – 8 slots. The Honey Badgers have been creating music together since the summer of 2011. In their first several years working together they released their debut EP\, “Booth Bay”\, a thoughtfully crafted second EP\, “Soul”\, as well as a collection of live recordings entitled “Mad Season”. In the years following the duo’s conception\, they played all over their home state of Delaware and the surrounding area\, from the Delmarva Folk Festival in Hartly to the World Cafe Live at the Queen in Wilmington. \nCardboard Ox is Tracie Potochnik & Steve Allain \nWell-established as solo performers in their home state of Rhode Island\, Tracie Potochnik and Steve Allain joined forces in 2014 to form Cardboard Ox. The duo is known for sweet and soulful harmonies\, thoughtful musicianship\, and delicately crafted storytelling.Cardboard Ox has performed at venues throughout New England including the main stage at The Providence Folk Festival\, the Spire Center for the Performing Arts\, and the legendary Club Passim\, and has opened for acts including Cheryl Wheeler and Marc Douglas Berardo. The duo has also been nominated for Limelight and Motif Magazine awards.Cardboard Ox’s eponymous debut EP\, a collection of six original songs\, was recorded at Rhode Island’s Lion Recording Studio with engineer Ross Lenzing. The album features simple arrangements and production that capture the duo’s live sound\, and place focus firmly on the songs themselves. They have also released the dowload-only Cardboard Ox Presents: A Cardboard Ox Christmas (featuring Cardboard Ox)\, a holiday EP featuring three original songs and one Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers classic. DESCRIPTION:The Open Book Coffeehouse continues its series of live monthly concerts on Saturday evening\, May 18\, featuring acoustic artist David Singley. The coffeehouse is located at the Canton Public Library\, 786 Washington Street\, Canton.  Doors open at 6:45 PM; music starts at 7:30 PM.  Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for students of any age. Tickets are available that evening on a first come\, first serve basis. (cash or checks). \nBorn and raised in rural central Illinois\, David Singley is a singer-songwriter-guitarist living in Saint Paul\, Minnesota\, whose music is born of the street\, the country\, and the academy. An experienced veteran with decades of backing world-class artists and performers\, he has recently joined the “Great Resignation” and set his sights on his own artistic pursuits. His music evokes the golden era of the singer-songwriter: the late ’60s and early-to-mid ’70s; with its chameleonic stylistic twists and turns\, as well as its memorable melodies and insightful\, poetic lyrics. His music expresses a point of view that is at once highly personal and triumphantly global. His voice evokes traces of many of his influences: James Taylor\, Gordon Lightfoot\, Jim Croce\, Jackson Browne\, Dan Fogelberg\, and many others. His guitar playing is at once highly focused and passionate\, impressive yet always absolutely appropriate to the song at hand. \nEnjoy the relaxing\, warm atmosphere of friendly people\, good music\, coffee\, tea\, and home baked goodies.  The Open Book Coffeehouse is located in the community room of the Canton Public Library at 786 Washington Street\, Canton\, and is made possible by the Friends of the Library. DESCRIPTION:After completing our wonderful outdoor Summer Concert Series at Ipswich River Park\, we move back indoors with the North Reading Community Coffeehouse proud to present its September Showcase.  This one is a little different than most in that we are featuring two terrific acts. They are Michelle Abadia who is a multifaceted and multilingual performing artist\, soprano; from classical to jazz\, from musical theater to Latino ballads; George Gershwin and Cole Porter. We are also featuring Michael Cataldo and Scotty Ray Clark\, an outstanding acoustic duo playing Classic Soul and R&B  (Sam Cooke\, Ray Charles\, Etta James) as well as stellar original songs.  Each performer will do about a 70 minute set. DESCRIPTION:Showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\n\n\nAcclaimed singer-songwriter Cliff Eberhardt opens the Rose Garden’s 36th season on Saturday\, September 21\, at 7:30 p.m.   \n“Cliff is a songwriter\, storyteller\, and guitarist who has a poet’s heart and a gravelly voice that just draws you in\,” said Stephen Ide\, artistic director of the Rose Garden Coffeehouse. “We’re thrilled to have him back to open the season.”  \nClose on the heels of recent performances on the “On A Winter’s Night” tour\, Eberhardt is working on a new collection\, “Found Objects\,” an album of covers featuring arrangements of the songs of Leon Russell\, Tom Waits\, Cole Porter and more.  \nEberhardt knew from a young age that his destiny was in music. Growing up in Pennsylvania\, he was surrounded by a family that cherished music\, with his father introducing him to the guitar. His early exposure to legendary artists like James Taylor\, Joni Mitchell\, and Bruce Springsteen at the Main Point folk club shaped his musical journey.  \nBy 15\, Cliff and his brother Geoff were touring as an acoustic duo\, and by 21\, Cliff had moved to Illinois\, where he honed his craft in a vibrant music scene. His journey took him to New York in 1978\, where he immersed himself in the city’s rich musical landscape\, performing at iconic venues\, collaborating with artists like John Gorka\, Suzanne Vega and others\, singing advertising jingles\, and even working as a taxi driver to help make ends meet.  \nHis career took off with his debut album\, “The Long Road” in 1990\, which featured a duet with Richie Havens. In 2014 she set out to overcome that stage fright and wrote her first song. Kim teamed with Grammy nominated producer Jon Evans to record three albums\, all receiving critical acclaim and charting on the Folk Alliance International DJ charts. Her latest release “The Seven Fires Prophecy Suite for Humanity” (2023) is an original 8 song suite that tells the ancient yet relevant Anishinaabe legend “The Seven Fires Prophecy”. Her newest project “All That Really Matters” will be released in early 2025. DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse (NRCC) is happy to welcome “Loose Change” featuring Gary Dolinsky\, Dominic Priolo and Larry Plitt. \nWhile they are each outstanding musicians in their own right\, they complement each other beautifully. \nThe Loose Change Trio performs songs that spans several generations creating a unique and pleasing mix of old and new!  \nTheir songbook includes classic country\, blues\, Motown\, pop music\, folk\, bluegrass\, and even a few “standards”. DESCRIPTION:Antje Duvekit first appeared on our radar back in the early 2000s. Continuing the Stone Soup tradition of supporting up-and-coming artists\, we asked Antje to open for Ellis Paul at one of our shows. Nowl\, we are thrilled to welcome Antje back to perform at the Music Mansion for the first time on October 12\, 2024.  Opening for Antje will be Erin Ash Sullivan. We are located at 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906. Tickets are $25\, and are available at the door or with reservation through our website. All tickets must be purchased at the time of the reservation. We accept VENMO. \nParking at The Music Mansion at 88 Meeting St\, Providence\, RI 02906 is limited and carpooling\, ride-sharing\, and mass transit are highly encouraged. There is also available parking on Benefit Street\, a short set of stairs will lead you right up to the Music Mansion.  \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nAntje Duvekot has solidified her reputation as one of Boston’s top singer songwriters with “Big Dream Boulevard” her debut studio release and “the Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer” and “New Siberia” her follow-up albums. The debut CD was produced by Seamus Egan\, founder of the Irish super group\, SOLAS and the project was released on songwriter Ellis Paul’s label and quickly attracted international attention for Antje. It was voted “#1 Folk Release of 2006” by the Boston Globe and was named to the “Top10 Releases of the Year” by National Public Radio’s\, Folk Alley. Her follow up albums “the Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer” and “New Siberia” were produced by Richard Shindell and along side with Richard feature other “folk royalty” such as John Gorka\, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli. \nRichard Shindell said “What a blessing to have worked with someone as talented as Antje. With a voice like hers\, and songs as good as these\, a producer (especially a first-time producer!) just tries to get out of the way\, to do no harm\, and to let the artist speak for herself.” The Boston Globe said\,  “Duvekot has gotten hotter\, faster than any local songwriter in recent memory. Her songs feel at once fresh faced and firmly rooted\, driven by the whispery sensuality of her voice” \nAntje has won some of the top songwriting awards including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and in one of the nation’s top music markets\, she won the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined the The Celtic Connections Festival in Scotland and the Tonder Festival in Denmark. \nOpening for Antje Duvekot will be Erin Ash Sullivan\, a Massachusetts-based singer-songwriter who considers herself a New Englander even though her family did not move to this area until she was in middle school. DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present its October Showcase. This one is a little different than most in that we are doing it on a Friday and we are welcoming two first time performers\, Tom Cook and Glen Gardner who is coming to North Reading from Phoenix. The other performers are Mary Ann McAllister who is returning to the NRCC from Maryland\, another NRCC veteran\, Tom Maynard and Art Grossman. Tickets are $15 available at the door or online at Home | dedhamuu.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nTom Smith’s songs are in turns humorous\, touching\, thought provoking\, and inspiring. Deeply rooted in the old-school folk tradition\, his stories are told in a voice that is honest\, melodic\, and sincere. In the words of Boston radio DJ\, Dave Palmater\, “Tom writes songs that seem like they’ve always been there… a true folksinger.” Tom grew up in rural Pennsylvania in a family where music was part of the fabric of everyday life. A folk veteran of over forty years\, Tom performs at festivals\, coffeehouses\, schools\, and concerts throughout the Northeastern to audiences large and small\, young and old.  Accompanied on multiple instruments by New England folk veteran Seth Connelly\, you are sure to leave their performance feeling better than when you arrived. Cosy Sheridan has been called one of the era’s finest and most thoughtful songwriters. She first appeared on the national folk scene when she won the songwriting contests at The Kerrville Folk Festival and The Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 1992 and released her critically acclaimed CD Quietly Led. Backed by the strong rhythms and harmonies of her bass player Charlie Koch\, she plays a percussive bluesy style of guitar – often in open tunings and occasionally with two or more capos She has performed at Carnegie Hall\, The Cowgirl Hall of Fame and on the Jerry Lewis Telethon. She teaches classes in songwriting\, performance\, and guitar at workshops and adult music camps across the country. She is the director of Moab Folk Camp in Moab\, Utah. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes its choir at Sunday services\, First Friday Jazz & Classical Concerts\, and the Parish Players theater troupe in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events.
