DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present its February Showcase.  The performers are: Woody Carpinella\, Conor Hennessy and Paul Simion\, Aaron Tornberg and Art Grossman .  Each performer will do about a 30 minute set. DESCRIPTION:RISA encourages\, fosters and conducts the art and craft of original lyrical and musical composition; provides educational programs\, critique sessions and performance opportunities for all artistic styles; and supports open collaboration within the RISA community. The organization was founded in 1993 by a small group of individuals dedicated to the art of songwriting. As interest in the group grew\, so did the RISA membership. With growth came visibility and a broader mission – to establish a songwriting community that would not only nurture Rhode Island and Southeastern New England songwriters\, but showcase their many talents as writers\, musicians and performers. This evening’s performers will include Mike Laureanno\, Katherine Quinn\, Maddie Cardoza\, Dean Petrella\, Scott Lewis\, and Tammy Laforest.

DESCRIPTION:The North Reading Community Coffeehouse is proud to present Don White.  Don is equal parts storyteller-comedian-author-troubadour-folk singer-songwriter\, and has been bringing audiences to laughter and tears for 30 years. White’s arc as an award-winning songwriter and performer has taken him from his industrial hometown of Lynn\, MA across the country as hitchhiker\, through Boston’s comedy clubs and coffeehouses\, and onto the stage with greats like Arlo Guthrie\, Taj Mahal\, Ritchie Havens\, Patty Larkin\, Bill Morrissey\, Tom Rush\, Louden Wainwright III\, and Christine Lavin\, with whom he toured for 8 years all across North America in a co-bill called The Funny Side of the Street. At every point\, White has been the ultimate observer\, infusing his work with his experiences as a husband\, a father\, a seeker\, and a joker. In 2011\, he won the Jerry Christen Memorial Award\, given out by Boston Area Coffeehouse Association\, for his work with the community. There will be refreshments for purchase.  Tickets are $15 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe Ruth and Ben String Band plays electrifying old-time Appalachian music. Led by guitarist Ruth Rappaport and her fiddler son\, Ben Wetherbee\, the band’s repertoire includes rousing fiddle tunes and traditional\, modern\, and original songs that feature tight harmony singing. They are joined by clawhammer banjo player Joel Wennerstrom and upright bass player Michael Siegel.As a multi-generational four-piece band\, their musical influences are far reaching and include many genres–from Irish fiddle tunes and early country to punk. Ruth brings years of experience as a principal member of the ‘80’s and ’90’s all-woman old-time band from Boston\, “The Poodles\,” touring Europe and the US.  Her son Ben is following in Ruth’s footsteps with his musically diverse fiddle playing\, which has garnered much attention through his many performances in the area. Joel’s rhythmic and melodic banjo playing can be heard on recordings alongside members of the Punch Brothers and various Appalachian fiddle contest winners. You can find Michael playing in numerous Americana\, Bluegrass\, and old-time groups\, including Rachel Sumner’s “Traveling Light” band.  Together they make a highly entertaining quartet.  Hold onto your hats! This will be a lively show! Ruth and Ben have recently released new album\, “Newfangled Folk” and look forward to playing selections from the album at the show. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services\, the Parish Players theater troupe\, and the Concerts at First Church Saturday classical concert series\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events.

At well over a million miles of roadwork\, including two stints as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, Pete and Maura Kennedy show no signs of slowing down either on tour or in the creative realm. \nSongwriting duo Pete and Maura Kennedy make a strong return to the studio and stage after three years of weekly live-streamed lockdown-era concerts. They took the opportunity to explore classic songwriting in depth\, performing over a thousand songs during the pandemic. That vast overview strengthened and refined their own writing and laid the foundation for this new collection of original\, socially-conscious songs. \n“After such a deep dive into American roots music\, we felt like we had a new set of writing tools. We were ready to create this body of work\, and there’s just SO much to write about\,” says Maura. “During our five-year hiatus from writing and recording\, America changed in massive ways\, divisive ways that have shaken our whole foundation. That has to be addressed by creative artists\, those of us who have a voice to speak for others. Our love of the great things about this country\, things that are under threat\, is the reason we decided to make “Headwinds” the title track of the CD. Political and social headwinds are making it hard to get back “home’ to our greatness as a nation. We want to push back in a positive way against those winds.” \nIn addition to singing and writing\, Pete and Maura are multi-instrumentalists. The thirteen songs are cast in a soundscape that draws from the classic canon of American roots\, in keeping with the theme of getting back “home” as a nation. Acoustic and electric guitars\, a vintage steel guitar\, a gospel-inflected piano/organ mix\, and even a slide ukulele all add colors to a songbag of sounds that have drawn us together during hard times. Pete and Maura believe that those sounds still have the power to pull us through again. \nThe Kennedys began their writing and touring life three decades ago as members of Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra\, developing their own sound as a frequent support act on Nanci’s tours across America\, Ireland\, Scotland and England. Collaborations with Nanci continued\, culminating in Pete and Maura producing her final album\, “Intersections.” Along the way\, they hosted a nationwide radio program\, “The Dharma Cafe” on Sirius/XM\, wrote and released sixteen CDs of original music\, and have been core artists on folk radio\, expanding their audience further with the inception of the AAA and Americana formats.

DESCRIPTION:NOTE: NEW earlier showtime: 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.\nAlastair Moock began his musical journey in 1995 when he relocated to the folk epicenter of Boston. In a short span\, he cemented his position as a fixture in the city’s thriving music scene. He has performed in venues as large as the Newport Folk Festival\, sharing the limelight with musical legends like Arlo Guthrie and Taj Mahal\, and last performed at the Rose Garden in 2008. The Boston Globe hailed him as a standout songwriter\, with his tunes striking a chord with listeners far and wide. \nIn 2006\, Moock’s career took a heartwarming turn toward family music after the birth of his twins. This shift resulted in a series of highly-praised albums\, a testament to his versatility and depth as a musician. Among his many accolades\, including a 2013 Grammy nomination. But his contributions extend beyond music. A steadfast advocate for social justice\, Moock has channeled his passion into pivotal initiatives. He co-founded The Opening Doors Project\, aiming to push forward racial conversations through the powerful medium of art. \nChandler Travis\, meanwhile\, embarked on his musical voyage in the 1970s. Making his mark as part of the duo\, Travis Shook and the Club Wow\, he garnered national attention and shared the stage with luminaries like George Carlin and Bonnie Raitt. Over the years\, Travis’s unique fusion of humor and soulful songwriting found expression in a range of musical endeavors\, from the Incredible Casuals to the Chandler Travis Philharmonic\, solidifying his legacy in the world of music.

DESCRIPTION:First Church Friday Coffee House presents its second concert of the 2023-2024 season featuring singer-songwriters Tom Smith and Cosy Sheridan in the Parish Hall at First Church and Parish Dedham\, 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, October 20\, 2023 at 7:30 pm in the Parish House. There will be refreshments for purchase. Tickets are $15 available at the door or online at Home | dedhamuu.  Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nTom Smith’s songs are in turns humorous\, touching\, thought provoking\, and inspiring. Deeply rooted in the old-school folk tradition\, his stories are told in a voice that is honest\, melodic\, and sincere. In the words of Boston radio DJ\, Dave Palmater\, “Tom writes songs that seem like they’ve always been there… a true folksinger.” Tom grew up in rural Pennsylvania in a family where music was part of the fabric of everyday life. A folk veteran of over forty years\, Tom performs at festivals\, coffeehouses\, schools\, and concerts throughout the Northeastern to audiences large and small\, young and old.  Accompanied on multiple instruments by New England folk veteran Seth Connelly\, you are sure to leave their performance feeling better than when you arrived. Cosy Sheridan has been called one of the era’s finest and most thoughtful songwriters. She first appeared on the national folk scene when she won the songwriting contests at The Kerrville Folk Festival and The Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 1992 and released her critically acclaimed CD Quietly Led. Backed by the strong rhythms and harmonies of her bass player Charlie Koch\, she plays a percussive bluesy style of guitar – often in open tunings and occasionally with two or more capos She has performed at Carnegie Hall\, The Cowgirl Hall of Fame and on the Jerry Lewis Telethon. She teaches classes in songwriting\, performance\, and guitar at workshops and adult music camps across the country. She is the director of Moab Folk Camp in Moab\, Utah. \nFirst Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes its choir at Sunday services\, Concerts at First Church and the Parish Players theater troupe in addition to our Friday Coffee House events.

We’re back! \nNow that it is ‘fall-ish’ another music event is planned for our 45th season at the South Shore Folk Music Club (SSFMC).\nThe first Coffeehouse is Fri Sep 22 2023\nDoors open at 630p\nShow starts at 7p\, goes till 915p\nFirst Parish Duxbury\n842 Tremont St (Rte 3A)\nDuxbury MA\nCoffeehouse Feature:  Fred Meltzer  \nFred Meltzer has been performing and recording originals\, covers and tribute music for over 40 years.  His band Free Range has featured at SSFMC in the past.  Fred has played his silly and thoughtful originals for the past several years and his project\, Waxy Shellac and The Tasteless Apples\, is currently recording their inaugural album “Shelf Life” at Ultrasound Productions in Hanover MA.  Looks for it soon on line and in person with a booklet illustrating how all the decades of hits were inspired!  Maybe Fred will be inspired to preview a couple at our first coffeehouse of the season! \nOpener Fran Araujo and Friends: \nFran Araujo is a musician who has been performing for about 12 years. Her musical roots begin with her paternal grandmother in Ireland. She was influenced in childhood by her parents’ Mitch Miller records\, and then was enchanted with the folk music of the 60s’s\, especially with the close harmony of popular groups of the time.  She appreciates and enjoys performing old time and bluegrass.  Fran takes great pleasure in singing and playing with others and believes music is deeply healing.\n\nWe also hope you’ll share your Talent at the OPEN MIC!
