SUMMARY:Andy Cohen\, Eleanor Ellis and William Lee Ellis House Concert
DESCRIPTION:$20 at the door\nReservations required: HouseConcerts@fssgb.org \nAcclaimed acoustic performers Andy Cohen\, Eleanor Ellis and William Lee Ellis return as a trio with this new album\, WHISTLIN’ PAST THE GRAVEYARD. Released on Cohen’s Riverlark label\, the ambitious project is a 21-track tour-de-force of old-time blues\, gospel\, ballads\, ragtime\, and country song that surpasses their previous high bar\, the 1993 Marimac outing\, Preachin’ in That Wilderness. \nAll three musicians have established themselves as noted artists in the folk and blues worlds\, both on stage and in the studio: Eleanor records for the Patuxent label\, Andy for Earwig Music\, and William for Yellow Dog\, where his latest solo album\, Ghost Hymns\, earned a Blues Music Awards nomination for Acoustic Blues Album of the Year. \nProduced by William Lee Ellis and River Hartley (Ghost Hymns)\, Whistlin’ is a truly unique listen\, one that fits no single musical category; rather\, it explores with finger-picked verve and joy the expansive palette of America’s musical past\, still relevant and very much alive in the sound of this remarkable trio. \nANDY COHEN: “A singularly unique figure\, Andy Cohen deserves some long overdue accolades.” – ALL MUSIC GUIDE \nELEANOR ELLIS: “A celebrated master of the country and Piedmont blues\, one of the most significant women in the acoustic genre… a torchbearer.” – LIVING BLUES \nWILLIAM LEE ELLIS: “A masterful genre-bender who sounds completely at home and thoroughly invested in whatever style he tackles.” – ACOUSTIC GUITAR

SUMMARY:Piedmont Style Blues Guitar Workshop with Andy Cohen
DESCRIPTION:$20 at the door (or $35 for both the workshop and the Cohen\, Ellis and Ellis house concert)\nReservations required: HouseConcerts@fssgb.org \nAndy Cohen is a virtuoso finger-style guitarist who has been described as “a walking\, talking folk-blues-roots music encyclopedia.” He grew up in a home with a piano and lots of Dixieland Jazz records. During the Sixties Folk Revival\, he got hooked on the music of Big Bill Broonzy and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. When Andy was 16\, he heard South Carolina’s Rev. Gary Davis perform and the effect on him was profound. He has devoted his life to studying\, performing\, and promoting traditional blues and folk music of the pre-World War II era. Andy has toured solo\, as well as with Martin\, Bogan and Armstrong\, John Jackson\, Rev. Gary Davis\, Brother Daniel Womack\, Rev. Dan Smith\, Jim Brewer\, and Honeyboy Edwards. He also worked extensively with Walt and Ethel Phelps\, Big Joe Duskin\, Pigmeat Jarrett\, Etta Baker\, Big Boy Henry\, and James “Son” Thomas. \nIn the workshop\, we will be going over a number of straightforward songs in the key of C: Freight Train\, Louis Collins\, Come Let Us March\, Gary Davis’s Candy Man\, and if we get that far\, I will teach Davis’s Buck Dance\, which is a little more complex than the others. You’ll learn how to keep your thumb going\, count while playing\, And learn how to play a scale in major and minor sixths.

SUMMARY:Jess Klein with Ben Shaw Opening
DESCRIPTION:Our Fall Season is turning out to be a reunion of sorts with artists who have been on our stage a few times over the past 25 years. Jess Klein is no exception to this reunion. It has been well over 15 years or more since she has played Stone Soup Coffeehouse. She has since produced eleven albums and she has pursued a creative evolution that has seen her delve into her own empowerment for emotional insight while continuing to refine her eloquent melodic\, effortlessly accessible song-craft. Jess will be at Stone Soup Coffeehouse on Saturday November 9\, 2024 at 7 pm. \n\n  \n\nAbout Jess\nSinger-songwriter Jess Klein – whom the New York Times calls “a songwriter with a voice of unblinking tenacity” – has always used music to dream her way forward. Over multiple decades and 11 albums\, Klein has pursued a creative evolution that has seen her delve into her own empowerment for emotional insights\, while continuing to refine her eloquently melodic\, effortlessly accessible song–craft. \nThe Bluegrass Situation hails her work as “one part grassroots social activism\, two parts alt-country guitar rock — a combo we can certainly get behind.” Klein’s new album\, When We Rise\, harnesses this potent combination with themes of empowerment and the joy of overcoming set to a dynamic and deeply introspective roots-inflected soundtrack. \nAbout Ben\nBen Shaw is a Rhode Island based Americana/Folk singer and songwriter whose unique voice stretches over a wide range of music. His authentic\, sincere performances feature heartfelt stories\, infectious melodies\, intricate lyrics\, witty banter\, and well-crafted songs that explore myriad faces of hope and heartache. He has been a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition as well as received multiple nominations in Motif Magazine’s Music Awards for Best Singer/Songwriter\, Best Americana Vocalist\, and Best Album.
