BANJO NICKARU & WESTERN SCOOCHES
The Linden Tree Coffeehouse is presenting a high energy Americana concert with the NYC trio Banjo Nickaru & Western Scooches on Saturday, March 2 at 8pm. Coming to the North Shore for the first time, this is a group not to be missed.
Banjo Nickaru & Western Scooches are likely the only band today infusing elements of world rhythms with global folk traditions, Americana, New Orleans influences, and 1920s jazz. The new album, Get Us Out Of Fearlandbuilds upon the multicultural exuberance that made the band’s debut, Very Next Thing, a transcendent breath of fresh air. Elmore Magazine championed its “remarkable musical dexterity with songs that bask in a genuine roots regimen and a sense of timeless tradition,” and revered tastemaker station WFUV (John Platt) said, “This is a band that must be heard to be believed!”
Over the past two years, Banjo Nickaru & Western Scooches has built a solid following in the Eastern U.S. with a half dozen tours while also playing such prestigious events such as Falcon Ridge Fest, Kansas City Folk Fest, Folk Alliance, NERFA, WFUV Sunday Supper, Blue Plate Special, WMOT Finally Friday, WNCW Studio B Sessions, Isis Music Hall and the Mid-Winter Folk Fest at Club Passim.
Band members have played with the likes of Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Julia Roberts, Wynton Marsalis, and Rob Morrow. Nick Russo has performed on ABC’s Good Morning Americaand has appeared in Sam Mendes’ Away We Goand PBS Masterpiece The Chaperone. Betina Hershey was a principle dancer in films such as Mona Lisa Smileand Disney’s Enchanted.
Their CD Very Next Thing(2016) featured fun classics such as Sweet Georgia Brown, Freight Train, and Ain’t Misbehavin’and two original songs by Betina Hershey with Nick Russo singing as well as playing guitar, 5 string banjo, tenor banjo, and resonator. The London Times described the album, “tuneful, occasionally aw, but unfailingly high spirited.
Get Us Out Of Fearland, the recent release from Banjo Nickaru & Western Scooches, is a joyous, soulful mash-up of high mountain folk and Gullah Geechee culture, western swing and upscale rockabilly, blues and bluegrass. If you had to give it a name, you could call it global Americana.
Get Us Out Of Fearlandis a giant step beyond the band’s reputation for being ridiculously fun on stage. Featuring eight originalsongs and one traditional stomp, the album expands and refines the band’ssignature sound. “Songs are always pouring out of me,” says songwriter and vocalist Betina Hershey. “With Fearland,we’re singing about what matters most to us—finding new forms, new sounds, and new life.”
